Never Forgive, Never Forget: The effect of the valence of autobiographical memories on the vengeance tendency of individuals with vulnerable narcissistic traits: A pilot study

Author(s): Teona-Maria Coșa,George Visu / Language(s): English Issue: 1/2023

Vulnerable narcissism has been associated with the tendency to seek revenge after the individuals perceive certain responses from others, either verbal or behavioral, as attacks to their self-esteem. However, less is known about the multiple possible sources of prolonged and/or repeated vengeance-seeking behaviors, most scientific articles focusing on the direct, in vivo potentially ego-threatening communication with the narcissistic individual. The current study aimed to explore the degree to which the nature of autobiographical interpersonal memories influences the intensity of the revenge tendency in a sample of 67 subjects with a higher level of vulnerable narcissistic traits, who were randomized in three conditions. The main hypothesis was that negative memories (represented by social situations in which the individual has been discredited) would lead to a greater endorsement of vengeance- related assumptions, while positive memories (represented by moments when praise was received) to a lower vengeance tendency (as measured with the same specific instrument in both cases). Statistically significant differences were observed between the positive event recall condition and the negative event recall one, participants in the latter group scoring significantly higher on the instrument measuring the vengeance tendency. Lower scores on the Vengeance Scale were observed, as predicted, in the positive event recall group. These results have the potential of adding to the existing literature a new perspective on this cognitive facet of vulnerable narcissistic individuals, helping to adjust the expectations about themselves even more. Such results may also help shift the focus on what can be done for defending the victims of possibly inevitable vengeful behaviors manifested by narcissists.

Refugee Children in the Scope of Mental Health Services at School

Refugee Children in the Scope of Mental Health Services at School

Author(s): Faruk Bozdağ,Naif Ergün / Language(s): English Issue: Suppl. 1/2022

Schools play an important role in the psychosocial, academic, and professional development of refugee children. Specifically, psychological counselors and guidance (PCG) experts who provide mental health services in schools have a critical role in this process. The way of approach to the problems, areas of difficulty, support needs, and suggestions of PCG experts who have experience working with refugee children can increase the quality of the services to be provided in this direction. In this study based on qualitative design, the experiences of PCG experts who have worked with refugee children were examined. The data were collected from 38 PCG experts. The data were analyzed with the thematic analysis technique. As a result of the analyses, 27 sub-themes related to six themes were determined: the perceptions of the PCG experts about refugee children, their approach to refugee children, the demands of refugee children, the activities carried out for refugee children, the competence to work with refugee children, and effective intervention proposals for refugee children. It has been determined that PCG experts have a realistic perception of refugee children, they carry out various activities towards refugee children in a professional manner in line with their demands, and they develop various coping methods against difficulties in this process. Although working with refugee children contributes to improving the professional skills of PCG experts, PCG experts need training to giving effective services to refugee children such as non-language-based methods, trauma education, refugee rights, psychoeducation and play therapy activities. Based on PCG experts’ experiences, they offer various recommendations for effective interventions for refugee children. In line with the results obtained, it has been evaluated that school counseling services can be the pioneer of activities to increase positive experiences in order to increase the mental health of refugee children.

Терминални ценности на студенти от педагогически специалности

Author(s): Iliana Petkova,Ivan Dimitrov / Language(s): Bulgarian Issue: 3/2015

Personal values and value orientations are discussed by various scientific disciplines (axiology, sociology, psychology etc.). This multiplicity is a sign for the theoretical and practical importance of value systems and explains the absence of consistency in their interpretation. The report presents the results of a survey conducted in 2013/14 with students of Educational Sciences at Sofia University "St. Kliment Ohridski", obtained using "Morphological test life values" (V.Sopov, L.Karpushina , 2002). The test examines base terminal values such as self-improving, spiritual development, creativity, active social contacts, self-prestige, achievements, material goods, preserving your own personality. On the other hand, they correlate to basic areas of life, such as professional life, educational sector, family life, social activity, passions, and physical activity. The survey includes 200 Bulgarian students from various majors, courses and training. The comparative analysis of the results shows balance and consistency in the selection of students. Among the most important personal values were rated spiritual development (the terminal values), combined with education (from areas of life), followed by professional and career achievements. The analysis of the areas of life shows that the greatest value is placed on educational sector.

The Transition towards an Independent Life of Private Social Services Beneficiaries

The Transition towards an Independent Life of Private Social Services Beneficiaries

Author(s): Loredana- Florentina Cătărău (Bozariu) / Language(s): English Issue: 1/2023

This article is designed to examine the transition of children and young people who come from the private protection system to independent living, both from a theoretical and practical perspective. The work is the result of 13 semi-structured interviews. The aim of the study is to identify how beneficiaries acquire and apply independent living skills during institutionalization and after the protection measure is lifted. The primary target group consists of 8 children and young people (female), aged between 12 and 22, who are under special protection in the "St. Joseph" Family House - a program of the Caritas Iasi Diocesan Center Association. The primary target group also includes two secondary target groups: three specialists and two former beneficiaries. Obtaining the results involved analyzing four essential life skills: social skills, emotional skills, assertiveness skills, and housekeeping skills. The results of the micro-research demonstrate that young people and children who are part of the private protection system acquire independent living skills during institutionalization, but they will experience a smoother transition to self-sufficiency if they have a less challenging family background

The presence of alcohol use disorders over a three months period in a general psychiatric ward of “Alexandru Obregia” Clinical Hospital of Psychiatry”

Author(s): Maria Puiu,Gabriela Elena Chele,Sorin Riga,Mihnea Manea / Language(s): English Issue: 2/2023

Alcohol use disorders (AUDs) are associated with many co-morbidities, generating increased costs for healthcare systems worldwide. Part of these costs are due to hospital admissions necessary for treatment. Objectives: Our research aimed to assess the prevalence and characteristics of cases with AUDs as a primary or secondary diagnosis over a three-month period in a general psychiatric ward of the Clinical Psychiatric Hospital "Prof. Dr. Alexandru Obregia". Methods: We conducted an observational, cross-sectional and retrospective study. Only admissions of adult male patients with a primary or secondary diagnosis at discharge of AUDs were included. Data collected from the hospital's database included: age, gender, primary and secondary diagnoses at discharge, length of stay, type admission (voluntary/non-voluntary) and character of admissions (emergency or non-emergency), health insurance and employment status. Results: 99 admissions of male patients, with a primary or secondary diagnosis related to alcohol use were identified from a total of 252 admissions. The mean age ± SD of the patients was 48.04 (±11,93). AUDs were present in 8 (8.08%) cases as a primary diagnosis and in 91 (91.92%) as a secondary diagnosis. For the admissions in which AUDs were present as a secondary diagnosis, the most frequent primary diagnosis was represented by different types of ‘depressive disorders’ 44 (48.35%) and ‘personality disorders’ 19 (20.88%). Other important findings show a high percent of involuntary admission 45 (45.45%) and a low percent of patients with health insurance 44 (44.44%).Conclusions: Findings in our study show a high number of AUDs as a secondary diagnosis suggesting a need for further, more extensive research to provide a more accurate picture of the real prevalence and consequences of AUDs in Romanian psychiatric hospitals.

Measurement equivalence of two methods of online administration of the vocational gender stereotype attitudes scale (VGSA) - the supervised in-class and the unsupervised at-home scale administration method

Measurement equivalence of two methods of online administration of the vocational gender stereotype attitudes scale (VGSA) - the supervised in-class and the unsupervised at-home scale administration method

Author(s): Mirta Blažev / Language(s): English,Serbian Issue: 3/2023

During the 2020-2022 COVID-19 global pandemic many researchers had to adopt or switch to online testing, which emphasized the need for ensuring measurement equivalence across different administration methods. The aim of this study was to determine whether gender stereotype measure (VGSA scale; Vocational Gender Stereotype Attitudes Scale) is equivalent in two different computer-based administration modes: supervised in-class and unsupervised at-home web survey. In-class web survey participants were 219 primary (11 to 16 years old; M = 12.97; SD = 1.16) and 195 secondary (15 to 19 years old; M = 16.78; SD = 0.96) school students that were surveyed in the group setting during a regular school day in their computer classrooms while the researcher was present in the room. At-home web survey participants were 144 primary (10 to 15 years old; M = 11.60; SD = 1.43) and 212 secondary (14 to 19 years old; M = 16.78; SD = 1.22) school students that were surveyed individually through the web link in their homes that was administered to them via the school administration. Results confirmed VGSA scale’s high internal reliability (ɑin-class = .89; ɑat-home = .92), expected bi-factor structure (χ2in-class (12) = 22.56, p = .032; χ2at-home(12) = 17.24, p = .141), and scalar measurement invariance across administration methods (Δχ2(21) = 49.05, p <.001; ΔCFI = –.003; ΔTLI = –.001; ΔRMSEA = .009; ΔSRMR = .013).

Coping with unemployment in COVID-19: The role of employability beliefs in exploration self-efficacy

Author(s): Maria do Céu Taveira,Ana Daniela Silva,Soraia Pereira / Language(s): English,Serbian Issue: 3/2023

The new coronavirus global pandemic has caused accelerated and emerging changes in the labor market, including increased unemployment. We examined the associations between employability beliefs and career exploration self-efficacy of 1585 unemployed adult workers, in Portugal, who lost their job after COVID-19. Participants completed measures of employability beliefs consistent with striving, proactivity, flexibility, acceptance of challenges, optimism and autonomy dispositions, and of career exploration self-efficacy. Using multiple linear regression analyses, we found that employability dispositional beliefs established significant positive associations with career exploration self-efficacy, especially autonomy, striving and optimism. Implications of these findings for future research and practice are considered.

Co-existing with the Other in the Aspect of the Problem of Fluctuations of Personality in the Society

Co-existing with the Other in the Aspect of the Problem of Fluctuations of Personality in the Society

Author(s): Oksana Petinova,Ekaterina Tkachenko / Language(s): English Issue: 59/2022

In this article an analysis of the concept of the Other in the context of the issue of “I and the Other” is introduced, and the ways through which the process of identification of personality within the framework of coexistence with the Other are shown within the context of phenomenological philosophy. The problem of identification is analysed as an integral part of the problem of the Other, since an individual always acts within the horizon of the intersubjective heritage. A person is born in a certain cultural tradition, without the intersubjective dimension of which their self-identification is impossible. A person is born in a world which is already imbued with the meanings of others, therefore, there always exists a need for their self-identification, which cannot be done without active participation of the Other. The processes of globalization, informatisation and post-industrialisation indicate that in the modern world social reality is constructed through brand-new algorithms, which cannot but impact the processes of socialization and self-identification, and lead to personality’s deep changes, which are made evident by its fluctuations.

A Self-Care Deficiency Syndrome: Self-Neglect

Author(s): Cansu Güler,Esra Engin / Language(s): English Issue: 4/2023

Self-neglect is the individual's failure to show the necessary attention and care in his own care. Self-neglect manifests itself as non-adherence to treatment, failure to maintain personal and environmental hygiene, and maladaptive health behaviours. At the global level, although self-neglect is frequently seen especially in the elderly population, it is seen in all age groups and especially in disease groups where disability is in question and their caregivers. Self-neglect, which is divided into two categories as intentional and unintentional, is an important cause of morbidity and mortality. Failure to maintain accepted self-care standards caused by self-neglect threatens not only personal but also public health and well-being and increases the burden of health services and health care costs. Self-neglect is difficult to detect because individuals are isolated and do not have the risk of directly harming themselves. Due to reasons such as non-compliance with current treatment, ineffective health management, these individuals' access to the health system is disrupted and the diagnosis and intervention of self-neglect is delayed because they only apply to health services in emergencies. Health professionals working in the field of public health and mental health, especially community mental health professionals, have important responsibilities for the diagnosis and intervention of self-neglect.

DOŽIVLJAJ ANKSIOZNOSTI KOD UČENIKA ZAVRŠNIH RAZREDA OSNOVNE ŠKOLE

Author(s): Adela Čokić,Meliha Bijedić,Emina Suljkanović-Djedović / Language(s): Bosnian,Croatian Issue: 8/2023

Anxiety is inevitable in everyday life and is an automatic human response to experiencing danger. Also, problems and symptoms related to anxiety are an integral part of maturation and represent adaptive responses that protect against dangerous situations and have a motivational effect. Anxiety becomes a problem for a person when it stops being motivating and protective. The aim of the paper is to examine the presence of axiosity in students of the upper grades of elementary school. The work was based on the assumption that anxiety is present in final grade students in different areas. The sample of respondents consisted of 120 final grade elementary school students in Tuzla Canton. The research was conducted in February 2023. The measuring instrument used in the research is the Children's Anxiety Scale by author Purić (1992; according to Zaić, 2005) and is intended for examining the anxiety of school-aged children. Data were processed using descriptive statistics methods. The results of the research indicate the presence of anxiety in three areas: exam, social and general anxiety in different intensity. The highest intensity was recorded in the area of test anxiety.

ZWIĄZKI ROMANTYCZNE MŁODZIEŻY Z ZABURZENIAMI PSYCHICZNYMI

Author(s): Hanna Kubiak / Language(s): Polish Issue: 64/2022

The article deals with the issue of romantic relationships experienced by adolescents with mental disorders. It presents the importance of participation in romantic relationships for the development of adolescents and how the process can be disrupted if the adolescents experience mental disorders. The difficulties concern both entering pre-intimate relationships as well as functioning in them. The main obstacles in this situation are related to the self-esteem of adolescents with mental disorders and the phenomenon of labeling them. The support system around young people with mental health problems consists not only of parents and teachers, but also of psychotherapists, educators and psychiatrists. The text ends with psycho-pedagogical postulates.

Psychological Safety of Volunteers During the War

Psychological Safety of Volunteers During the War

Author(s): Nina Pidbutska,Yuliia Demidova,Anastasiia Knysh / Language(s): English Issue: 1/2023

Aim. The article is aimed at determining the indicators of psychological safety inherent in volunteers with signs of emotional exhaustion in combat zones. Methods. The study included the following methods: a) testing: Emotional Exhaustion Questionnaire (EEQ), Psychological Safety of Individual Questionnaire; b)statistical analysis: methods of descriptive statistics (percentage, minimum, maximum, range, standard error, mean, standard deviation). The group of respondents included 48 people, who were involved in volunteer activities in the Kharkiv region of Ukraine from March 2022 up to November 2022. Results. It was determined that the largest subgroup in the general group of respondents were volunteers with a high level of emotional exhaustion (46%) – these are people who feel general tension and do not remember the last time they experienced positive emotions. Among all the indicators of psychological safety, the indicators of moral-communicative and internal comfort turned out to be the least developed. Conclusions. Volunteer groups need specially organized psychological help and support, just like military or military medics. The constant danger of the activity, the need to be in contact with different people, moral fatigue lead to rapid emotional exhaustion and can causehealth disorders or even cost the volunteer’s life.

Analysis of Risk of Burn Out at Workers in the Field of Social Services and Health Care

Author(s): Zuzana Budayová,Lucia Ludvig Cintulová,Lenka Mrosková / Language(s): English Issue: 1/2023

Aim. The aim of the research was to analyse the burnout rate of these social workers and nurses, as well as to determine the relationship between burnout syndrome and other important factors, including lifestyle, stress, resistance to stress and other selected demographic indicators. Methods. The Maslach Burnout Inventory was used to collect burnout data in 2021 during the second wave of the Covid-19 pandemic. The research sample consisted of 623 women aged 35-55 who work in social services facilities for the elderly and nurses working in the geriatrics department at a hospital in the western part of Slovakia. Results. Research has shown that lifestyle has a significant impact on the development of burnout syndrome in connection with the quality of work and personal relationships, which can help eliminate feelings of frustration, exhaustion and personal failure in the workplace. Burnout affects social workers regardless of age and education, but with older age and length of practice in the same facility, the risk of manifestations of burnout increases. Significant differences in burnout rates between social workers and nurses in the individual dimensions of exhaustion, depersonalisation and professional attitudes were confirmed. High levels of exhaustion have even shown an increased risk of alcohol consumption among these workers. Conclusion. The development of chronic stress in health care workers can put them at risk of burnout, which is characterized by emotional exhaustion (EE), depersonalization (DP) in interactions with patients and social clients, and low levels of personal accomplishment (PA) in social work and health care.
