English speaking self-efficacy and its relations with personality traits

English speaking self-efficacy and its relations with personality traits

Author(s): Haldun Vural / Language(s): English Issue: 1/2020

The lack of communicative competence of Turkish university students can be explained with shyness and insufficient self-efficacy. Therefore, it can be asserted that personality and self-efficacy are interrelated. If teachers are aware of students’ personality types and can find out whether the reasons for their speaking self-efficacy are related to their personality traits, they may teach their classes better and decide on the most effective teaching techniques and methods. Speaking self-efficacy can be suggested as a common problem in foreign language learning. Since studies related to the big five factors have shown that these factors can be changed through education or intervention and positively contribute to personality traits, it is necessary to determine which and how many of the big five personality factors match foreign language speaking self-efficacy. The aims of the current study were: (1) to determine the personality traits of 4th-year students at English Language Teaching (ELT) and English Language and Literature (ELL) departments at Turkish universities, (2) to examine whether there are significant differences between personality traits of ELT-ELL departments’ students, (3) to examine the relations between personality traits and English speaking self-efficacy of the participants. According to the results, there is a significant difference between personality traits’ scores of both groups. All personality traits exist in ELT and ELL groups. The sequence of PTs is the same for both groups with lower ratios in ELL except neuroticism which is higher in ELL. The personality traits from the highest are agreeableness, openness, conscientiousness, extraversion and neuroticism respectively. There are significant relations between personality traits and foreign language speaking self-efficacy of the participants. While there are negative and significant relations between agreeableness, openness, conscientiousness, extraversion and foreign language speaking self-efficacy, there is only one positive and significant relation between it and neuroticism.

VELIKIH PET OSOBINA LIČNOSTI VOĐE

Author(s): Dijana Sulejmanović / Language(s): Bosnian Issue: 13/2021

When it is necessary to decide on the professional future of a worker, or to determine does he deserve promotion or does he worth investing based on the capacities he has, the importance of the personality traits is more often highlighted. In practice, as well as in the scientific literature, we find a visibly smaller number of articles about personality of a leader. Although the competencies that a good leader should have are emphasized, usually these competencies are visible only after someone takes the position of leader. In this paper, we start from the problem of detecting personality traits that a good leader has, whether it is a political leader, captain of a sports team, head of a work organization or a representative of an informal group. By reviewing and analyzing a review of papers on leader traits, we examine which personality traits indicate that an individual will be a good leader, or - despite all other competencies, knowledge and skills - will he be led by others.

Емпатията в теорията на Карл Роджърс – критичен анализ и импликации в социалната работа по случай

Author(s): Emilina Tsenova / Language(s): Bulgarian Issue: 2/2017

The article explores the contributions of one of the founders of client-centered approach - Carl Rogers in terms of his understanding of empathy. On this basis, empathy is considered a key skill in casework as it helps us to better understand the situation that the client presents because the social worker builds his assessment and plans interventions based on good knowledge of the needs, aspirations, desires, fears and the overall way of looking at the world and their own situation by the client. The formation of a trusting relationship involves precisely the authentic understanding Rogers had about empathy. The purpose of this article is to examine the place of empathy in the client centered approach in social case work - theoretical background, practical and methodological aspects, criticism and limitations of the approach.

Author(s): Anișoara Sandovici,Viorel Robu,Cristina Maria Stoica / Language(s): Romanian Issue: 27/2021

The relationship between online work, well-being and mental health is well-documented. This study aimed to highlight the relationship between online work and depression in the context of the rapid changes that have marked the field of work and the organizational world, as a result of the spread of the COVID-19 pandemic. One hundred and ninety-seven subjects were recruited from the community population using the convenience sampling technique. Of these, 139 carried out their academic/professional activity online, while 58 worked in situ. Participants completed the Romanian versions for the Beck Depression Inventory-Fast Screen (BDI-FS) and General Self-Efficacy Scale (GSES). There was no statistically significant difference between the scores that participants in the two groups revealed for depression. In contrast, for generalized self-efficacy, participants who worked online scored significantly higher than those who worked in situ. In addition, for both groups of participants, the level of depression was negatively associated with generalized self-efficacy. Several practical recommendations for reducing the risks of working online are proposed.

Casus Andersa Breivika. Analiza wyselekcjonowanych wymiarów

Author(s): Elżbieta Czykwin / Language(s): Polish Issue: 1/2021

The spectacular case of Anders Breivik has caused and is causing far-reaching social repercussions. The article analyzes following the grounded method (Konecki, s. 547–564), Thanks to which, out of a huge amount of material and possible variables, it was possible to " distil" four basic dimensions as constitutive and, as it could be stated later, common to many other cases that had place before and after the attack on 22/7. These dimensions are: dysfunctional social relationships in childhood, narcissism, Internet addiction and incel status, and experiencing shame. All these dimensions occur together and in extreme intensity. Thanks to this, a kind of conceptual matrix was obtained that allows to adopt a specific approach in the analyzes of similar cases. This matrix also enables the understanding of the toxic sources embedded in the contemporary civilization of the incident.

Przejawy i uwarunkowania tożsamości negatywnej u młodzieży w okresie wczesnej adolescencji z lekką niepełnosprawnością intelektualną

ISIKSUSEOMADUSTE ARVESTAMINE JUHTIDE KUJUNDAMISEL

Author(s): Märt Reedi / Language(s): Estonian Issue: 13/2022

Revitalising career counseling for sustainable decent work and decent lives: From personality traits to life project reflexivity for well-being

Revitalising career counseling for sustainable decent work and decent lives: From personality traits to life project reflexivity for well-being

Author(s): Annamaria Di Fabio,Andrea Svicher,Letizia Palazzeschi,Alessio Gori / Language(s): English Issue: Sl. 1/2022

The context of contemporary work scenarios features constant change and innovation in the field of information and communication technologies, which result in frequent work transitions and job insecurity. Such circumstances are highly threatening to the wellbeing of workers. Moreover, the instability and precariousness of the labour market are aggravated by the current crisis of the COVID19 pandemic. Individuals are facing increased critical life and professional challenges and are being asked to take personal responsibility for the direction of their personal and work lives. In this complex context, career counseling needs to be revitalised in strength-based prevention perspectives. Life Project Reflexivity (LPR) addresses future professional and life plans and represents a critical construct for career counseling. The present study among Italian university students in transition to the labour market analysed the relationships between LPR and well-being while controlling for the ‘Big Five’ personality traits. The Big Five Questionnaire, the Life Project Reflexivity Scale and measures of both hedonic and eudaimonic well-being were administered to 278 university students of the University of Florence. LPR and its dimensions of authenticity, no acquiescence and clarity/projectuality explained the incremental variance beyond personality traits with respect to both hedonic and eudaimonic well-being, with specific reference to meaning in life. Among the three dimensions of LPR, authenticity was the most promising in this study. These results offered new perspectives for career counseling by supporting a strength-based prevention process for constructing sustainable decent work and life.

Baudrillard’ın Simülasyon Kuramı Bağlamında Kur’ân’da Eleştirilen Kişilik Tipleri ve Modern Dünyada Gerçeklik Arayışı

Author(s): Fikrullah Çakmak,Ülhak ÇİMEN / Language(s): Turkish Issue: 57/2022

The simulation theory of Baudrillard, one of the important names of French world of thought, has been recently started to be taken into consideration in academic studies. The basis of the simulation is pretending and this way of behaviour and thinking is intensely seen in the field of religion as well. Today’s people also spread the simulation to the field of religion in the large part of their daily lives. The truth revealed by religious texts is simulated by the changed references of reality and the reality becomes liveable on behalf of religion. It is seen that pretending that forms the basis of Baudrillard’s simulation theory has its counterpart in Islamic thought as well. The kinds of people behaving similarly to this way of behaviour are mentioned in Qur’an and hadiths. The examples are explained via hypocrisy, discord and shirk. In this context, it has been tried to reveal in our study that Baudrillard’s simulation theory is parallel to the concepts of hypocrisy, discord and shirk in Islamic sources.

Toplumsal Gerçekçi Bir Yazar Olarak Mustafa Kutlu’nun Edebî Şahsiyetinin Hikâyeleri Çerçevesinde İncelenmesi

Author(s): Ayşe Koçak Işık / Language(s): Turkish Issue: 15/2022

Various elements are involved in the formation of an author's literary personality. The first of these elements is the author's own personality. As a person, the fact that a person develops himself in an intellectual, moral and spiritual sense and achieves a certain level is considered to be the main element affecting the products that this person will put forward. Based on the stories of Mustafa Kutlu, we get an idea of his literary personality and, of course, his personality, and we see that he has created a strong identity before his stories. Kutlu, as a thinker who questions, criticizes and observes justice in doing so, has no bigane left to the social events that he has experienced or witnessed. Considering the 1960s-80s, when his literary life began and developed, we can see that he witnessed the depression periods in which Turkish society was located, and he also related this to his stories. In the light of these evaluations and determinations, we see that Kutlu is a name that fills important gaps in Turkish storytelling. Kutlu, who took a rather separate place in the Turkish story after 1970 in terms of the issues he covered and his style, drew attention to the religious, cultural and identity corruptions occurring in society and individuals by describing the change and transformation of Turkish society in a realistic style. In his stories, he especially blessed the countryside where tradition is assumed to live / live by giving space to the changes and transformations that people who came by migration have undergone in the city in a bad way. It can be said that the village is a place of virtue and the city is a place of alienation in Kutlu's stories, which observe depressions in urban people who have been defeated, torn from traditional values and life, whose mind and psychology have been tarumar.

Social Support as a Mediator and Need for Affiliation as a Moderator of the Association between Social Networks Use and Self‑Esteem

Author(s): Cristian Bâcu,Ana-Maria Tepordei / Language(s): English Issue: 48/2021

The aim of the present study was to contribute to a better understanding of the previous inconsistent findings regarding the effects of social network use on individuals’ self‑esteem. Therefore, we investigated the direction of the association between Facebook use and self‑esteem, the potential mediation effect of perceived social support, as well as the potential moderation effect of need for affiliation. A sample of 122 university students (Mage = 20.71, 59% women) from the Republic of Moldova filled in self‑assessment scales measuring intensity of Facebook use, self‑esteem, perceived social support and need for affiliation. Results showed positive associations between Facebook use and need for affiliation. Self‑esteem was positively associated with social support, while negatively associated with need for affiliation. Neither a significant mediation effect, nor a significant moderation effect was found. Results are discussed in terms of conceptual contribution to the field, as well as theoretical and methodological suggestions for future research.

Author(s): Anna Lada / Language(s): Polish Issue: 10/2021

The issue of mental disorders has become a permanent part of social life. The increasingly better diagnostics and possibilities of supporting people with mental disorders highlights this phenomenon in modern society. Knowledge of others about the functioning and help of people with mental disorders affects their quality of life and the possibility of social inclusion. Research conducted on a group of over 1000 secondary school students and students from nine provinces in Poland revealed gaps and gaps in both the knowledge of mental disorders and the way in which such people function in the environment. That is why it is so important to educate generations in this area so that every person can fully enjoy their social rights and fulfill themselves to the best of their abilities.

MALOLETNIČKA DELINKVENCIJA KAO PROBLEM SAVREMENOG DOBA

Author(s): Marija Gojković,Gordana Gavrić,Rade T. Babović / Language(s): Bosnian,Serbian Issue: 7/2022

Juvenile delinquency is a serious problem faced by modern society, which captures public attention - seemingly not enough. Juvenile delinquency implies various crimes committed by minors, which lead to criminal proceedings against them and statutory penalty. Even though recent statistics show the decline, or stability of the global crime rates, the issue of juvenile delinquency in our country should be addressed seriously. Lack of prevention is highly noticeable, which creates a need for investigating this problem. Experts with different profiles are united in searching for a method of stopping the worldwide trend of juvenile delinquency. Delinquency can be regarded as a legal term, but also as antisocial behavior. Observation of delinquents from legal point of view is reflected in the prohibition and sanctioning of such behavior through legal procedure. If we take juvenile delinquency as antisocial behavior, numerous studies aim to perceive criminal personality. Some characteristics may indicate certain predispositions of young people to criminal behavior. By looking at theoretical considerations we will spot the features indicating delinquent behavior of an individual. Modern science pays great attention to the factors leading to aggressive behavior. Recent research emphasizes significant impact of genetics, which together with adverse effects of the social environment can lead a young person to delinquent behavior. Children and young people have sensitive period, and if we add to this the transit route our country is going through and the challenges that family and society as a whole are facing, the focus should be on the factors that cause this problem.

Cechy osobowości a samoocena i rozumienie emocji uczniów uzdolnionych muzycznie

Author(s): Małgorzata Kuśpit / Language(s): Polish Issue: 2/2022

The aim of the study was to determine the independent variables of self-esteem and the understanding of emotions in musically gifted students. The current educational objectives focus on comprehensive development of the pupil. It has also been pointed out that it is necessary to provide pupils with special educational needs, such as highly capable and gifted students, with appropriate conditions for study (Limont, 2005). It is increasingly often that attention is drawn to the need for modernising school curricula and the teaching methods used with gifted pupils and recognising their individual properties and needs. In the process of fostering talent, cognitive abilities play as important a role as personality and the emotional sphere of an individual (Kuśpit, 2018). The subjects included students of music schools (N=231) and grammar schools (N=188) who made up a comparison group aged 15 – 18. The study made use of the Five Factor Inventory NEO-FFI by Costa and McCrae, the SES self-esteem scale by Rosenberg and the Test for Understanding Emotions (TRE) by Matczak and Jaworowska. An analysis of regression was carried out using the introduction method. It was found that in the group of music school students, extroversion and neuroticism were variables crucial for self-esteem, while in the group of grammar schools students - they were neuroticism and conscientiousness. As for understanding emotions, the key variables in grammar school students included extroversion, neuroticism, openness to experience and agreeability, while no significant correlation between personality traits and the understanding of emotions was found in the music school student group. These findings may be helpful in adapting the school curricula to the specific needs of the pupils and in managing the development of talent in such a way as to enable the students to achieve their goals and succeed in different fields of activity.

Sleep Quality and the Level of Perceived Stress in Medical Students

Sleep Quality and the Level of Perceived Stress in Medical Students

Author(s): Bartosz Bagrowski,Joanna Gutowska / Language(s): English Issue: 1/2022

Sleep is a very important aspect of human life, as it is responsible for regulation of the circadian cycle, body regeneration and reduction of harmful metabolites. Sleep deprivation can be associated with chronic stress, which can have an extremely negative impact on bodily function. The presented study covered 220 students of medical faculties; their correlations between the sleep quality and the level of perceived stress were analyzed. Sleep quality was measured using the PSQI (Pittsburgh Sleep Quality Index), and perceived stress was measured using PSS-10 (10-Item Perceived Stress Scale). A high correlation was shown between the PSQI and PSS-10 results (rs = 0.60), which means that people who were characterized by a low sleep quality also showed a high level of perceived stress. Among the PSQI components that were the most correlated with PSS-10, can be counted in such components as C1 (subjective sleep quality, rs = 0.50), C2 (sleep latency, rs = 0.51), and C7 (daytime dysfunctions, rs = 0.52). Mobile phone usage at bedtime has also been demonstrated to correlate with poor sleep quality. The study shows a significant relationship between sleep quality and the level of perceived stress, which has also been shown in other studies.
