Particularities of Romanian as acquired by young bilingual immigrants in Spain

Author(s): Paul Buzilă / Language(s): English Issue: 1/2016

Romanian immigration in Spain reached its peak towards the end of the 2000’s, putting the Romanians on the first place among the immigrant communities in Spain. Several linguistic studies have already posited the existence of a new Romanian variety, the so-called Rumañol, strongly marked by linguistic interference phenomena. This paper uses a quantitative approach and compares the amounts of interference that can be observed in the speech of two distinct immigrant groups, early and late bilinguals, in order to reveal the particularities of the Romanian variety spoken by Romanian children born in or taken to Spain at early ages.

Addictions may appear in many normal and even everyday human behaviors. Mechanisms typical of addiction can also be seen in other disorders identified in the Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders (DSM-5): binge eating, for example. The article points out the similarities between the symptoms of binge eating and addiction to psychoactive substances. The traditional understanding of addiction is adopted, referring to the philosophy of self-help groups and the strategic and structural concept. Next, the differences between these disorders are discussed. The article then presents the differences between the adopted model of addiction and cognitive behavioral therapy in the treatment of binge eating. Reference is also made to research on the mechanisms underlying the disorder. Subsequently, based on the described differences, the implications for therapy in people with binge eating disorder are presented. These differences primarily concern cognitive, affective, and behavioral aspects. For the purposes of the article, the diagnostic criteria for binge eating disorder and for alcohol use disorders presented in the DSM-5 are used. In addition, an analysis of the literature on the subject was carried out and the collected information was supplemented with observations from the author’s clinical practice.

Red fly agaric is one of the most recognizable species of mushrooms. Although the knowledge of its toxicity is common in Polish society, a rise in its recreational use has been observed in recent years. The aim of the study is to describe the phenomenon of fly agaric consumption and to characterize its enthusiasts in the context of individual and social conditions. The study was conducted using a proprietary questionnaire with questions about red fly agaric usage, issues related to mental health, and sociodemographic data. A total of 95 respondents were qualified for the research sample: 32 women, 60 men, and three people who declared a gender other than binary. They were divided into two groups: experimenters (OE) and regular red fly agaric users (OU). The frequency, form, dosage, and place of fly agaric consumption among the respondents was determined, as well as the circumstances of and sources for acquiring the substance. The subjects noted the effects—direct and long-term—of taking fly agaric. The results show that the use of psychoactive substances is constantly developing and that the changing trends make it necessary to reflect on the support system for people with addiction problems.

The burden of patients with rosacea – psychosocial impact and psychiatric comorbidities

The burden of patients with rosacea – psychosocial impact and psychiatric comorbidities

Author(s): Raluca Stamatin,Doinița Olinici,Laura Gheucă Solovăstru,Mădălina Mocanu,Ioana A Popescu,Adriana Pătrașcu,Dan Vâță / Language(s): English Issue: 3/2023

Rosacea is a chronic skin condition with a global incidence ranging from 1% to 22%, affecting mainly women aged between 30 and 55 years. The etiopathogenesis of rosacea is complex, involving genetic factors, cutaneous or intestinal dysbiosis, neurovascular dysfunction, or immune disorders. Clinically, it is characterized by persistent or transient facial erythema, papules, pustules, phymatous changes, ocular manifestations, and associated symptoms such as burning sensation or local stinging.Physical appearance and facial features significantly influence all social aspects a person experiences, from various interpersonal relationships to employment decisions. The disease can lead to social stigmatization and significantly reduce the quality of life. The chronic course of rosacea and its predominant facial localization, visible in the patient's social environment, justify the increased incidence of psychiatric comorbidities in these patients.Rosacea is an easily observable condition, especially due to persistent redness, which often leads to the development of feelings of anxiety or social phobia, stigmatization, or comorbidities such as depression, generalized anxiety, or bipolar disorder.Currently, the European Academy of Dermatology and Venereology (EADV) Task Force on Quality of Life in rosacea recommend the use of specific scores for inflammatory dermatological diseases, such as the Dermatology Life Quality Index (DLQI) and the Minimal Clinically Important Difference (MCID), as well as the specific rosacea score RosaQoL.The current study aims to describe the psychosocial impact of rosacea on these patients. Due to the increased incidence of depression and anxiety in this patient group, great attention must be given to signs and symptoms of psychiatric comorbidities, and the therapeutic approach should target both dermatological treatment and associated treatment from the perspective of a psychiatrist or psychologist.

VOCATIONAL CHOICE AND STROKE ECONOMY IN SEVENTH GRADE STUDENTS FROM LOW SOCIO-ECONOMIC STATUS FAMILIES

VOCATIONAL CHOICE AND STROKE ECONOMY IN SEVENTH GRADE STUDENTS FROM LOW SOCIO-ECONOMIC STATUS FAMILIES

Author(s): Sezgin Bekir / Language(s): English Issue: 2/2023

Socio-economic status and relationships between family members are factors that have an impact on adolescents‘ professional orientation. The report presents results from a study of vocational choice, relationship patterns as measured by the stroke economy, and the educational level of parents of adolescents from low socio-economic status families. The sample includes 195 adolescents, students in the seventh grade, and 109 of them indicate that they have made their vocational choice. According to the obtained results, the studied adolescents are oriented towards professions in the fields of health care and services. Leading stroke economy patterns are „Don‘t accept“ and „Don‘t give yourself“, which is expressed in a tendency to devalue one‘s own achievements and successes. It was also established that more than half of the parents of adolescents (60.47% of fathers and 69,77% of mothers) who have not made a vocational choice have basic (primary or lower secondary) education. The results testify to the role of parents‘ education as a factor that probably has an effect on the process of vocational guidance of adolescents. Significant differences in the stroke economy were found, as in adolescents who have made a vocational choice the „Don‘t ask“ style dominates, while in adolescents with a lack of vocational choice the „Don‘t give yourself“ style dominates. The results of the research can be used in the implementation of various educational and training programs for social inclusion, vocational guidance, and career development of adolescents from low socio-economic status families.

This article presents a portion of the research data collected as part of the international applied research project “Communities for Sciences - Towards Promoting an Inclusive Approach in Science Education.” The project aims to promote inclusive science activities for children and youth in six different European locations. The findings of a project-based collaboration between researchers and kindergarten teachers of 3 groups of 3-4 years old Roma children from Faculteta neighborhood in Sofia are reported. The teachers work at 2 kindergartens situated in this location and run by the Health and Social Development Foundation (HESED). Participatory action research methodology was used to explore the opportunities for the three teams of teachers to apply more inclusive approaches in teaching science to children. Further, the article presents kindergarten teachers’ implicit knowledge and practices concerning child participation in the learning process. The teachers’ practices are discussed within the framework of a theory on levels of child participation. The article emphasizes the importance of creating an appreciative and supportive culture of relationships among teachers in the organization, which allows for an inclusive educational approach to be applied to their work with children. Additionally, the article discusses how broader educational and social contexts can either support or hinder teaching teams in applying their educational approach. The data collected should offer insights on how to develop more effective strategies for implementing inclusive science proposals that meet the specific needs of local communities. This can be achieved through co-creation and active citizen participation.

Формирование «советской модерности» и региональная элита в 1960–1970-е гг.

Формирование «советской модерности» и региональная элита в 1960–1970-е гг.

Author(s): Viktor Viktorovich Kondrashin,Olga Aleksandrovna Sukhova / Language(s): Russian Issue: 44/2023

Based on the materials of the Penza region, the problem of the formation of “Soviet modernity” in the consciousness and practices of political management of the regional elite during the 1960s–1970s is considered. The authors agree with M. David-Fox’s position on Soviet modernity as another type of industrial society, ex-pressed through ideological and cultural representations and behavioral strategies established in the minds and psychology of the elite and society as a whole. The analysis of recruiting, social composition, mental attitudes and aspirations of the regional elite, the results of regional identity formation in the 1960s–1970s was carried out on the basis of the sources of mass origin, documents of Party and Soviet governing bodies, diary records and memoirs. The chronotope of development of the Penza region in this period was due to the later terms of the territorial organization, the processes of industrialization and regional specialization of industrial production. The general trend of changes can be characterized as a situation of unprecedented and unrestrained, in some ways rampant industrial construction, construction of housing and social and cultural facilities. The most important conditions for the formation of the local elite as carriers and generators of new attitudes and values are considered: the socio-economic transformation of the region, its transformation from a backward agricultural to one of the centers of the military-industrial complex of the USSR; as well as the process of mass promotion of leaders in the 1950s–1960s. Most of them were natives of the Penza region, people 30–40 years old, came from the workers and peasants, with higher, usually technical, education, hard military youth, about one-third — participants in the Great Patriotic War, about half — former Komsomol leaders.

THE THEORIES OF INTERPERSONAL ACCEPTANCE IN DEVELOPING POSITIVE TEACHER-STUDENT RELATIONSHIPS

Author(s): Ivelina Stefanova / Language(s): English Issue: 3/2023

In recent years, Bulgaria has implemented significant changes in the educational system. Тhe volume and complexity of study material have been increased, along with changes related to law on inclusive education. All this has increased the demands on teachers and students, putting a strain on relationships in the classroom. The lack of time and the need to teach all the intended learning material push the importance of interpersonal relationships to the background in the learning process. Communication between teachers and students has become formal and informative, which is a prerequisite for students’ demotivation and withdrawal from the learning process. This article provides theoretical guidance and discusses scientific research from the last six decades, emphasizing the critical role of interpersonal acceptance in educational process in building a positive and productive environment and developing personal potential. The need for research and reformulation of contemporary models of teacher-student relationships is highlighted.

Review of psychological studies on correlates of youth religiosity in post-socialist Bosnia and Herzegovina

Review of psychological studies on correlates of youth religiosity in post-socialist Bosnia and Herzegovina

Author(s): Srđan Dušanić / Language(s): English Issue: 2/2023

Research on religiosity in Bosnia and Herzegovina (B&H) and former Yugoslavia during the socialist period consistently shows that the majority of inhabitants (70–80%) identify as not religious. In the 1990s, many things changed in B&H, the most important definitely being the fall of the socialist system, expansion of ethnic awareness among all three dominant peoples (Bosniaks, Serbs, Croats), and ethnic war. These social circumstances were followed by changes in the relationship towards religion. Religion has become a very important and socially desirable ideology. In this survey, we review psychological surveys and investigate to what extent young people in the post-socialist context of B&H are religious, and we examine the relationship between religiosity and other social, psychological, and demographic variables. The results of close to 50 empirical surveys have been analysed. Papers were written in the period from 2000 to 2022. All papers included samples from B&H. The paper with the smallest sample had 163 respondents, while the biggest sample amounted to 7,000 respondents. The majority of papers had 300–550 respondents. All surveys encompassed young people between 15 and 25 years of age. The instruments used in most of the cases were the religiosity scales that rely on Allport’s concept of religious orientation, and they imply the existence of intrinsic and extrinsic dimensions (subscales) of religiosity. The results of most of the research show that around 70–90% of participants identify as religious. People in Bosnia and Herzegovina are keen on identifying as religious, but that is much less accompanied by adequate and concrete religious attitudes and behaviours. Socio-demographic variables can be important for expressing religiosity, but those correlations are not consistent. Religiosity almost regularly correlates with conformity, authoritarianism, and conservatism. There is a tendency that religiosity can be a determinant of personal well-being. Correlation is found with better family relations, altruism, lower anti-social behaviours, and, in some research, greater satisfaction with life and optimism. In contrast to that, religiosity can be connected with certain realistically or potentially problematic constructs such as social and ethnic distances, authoritarianism, dogmatism, and ethnocentrism. In the future, it is necessary to work on the development of religiosity, which is a factor of internal and social well-being, and not of intergroup disputes.

Studying and Assuming Moral Values through Literature. A didactic approach involving educational coaching

Author(s): Larisa Ileana Casangiu / Language(s): English Issue: 1/2023

This article aims to provide examples of inducing/improving students motivation to manifest the desire to identify, through coaching, the moral values that exist in the texts used as didactic support for the activities of Communication in the Romanian language/Romanian language and literature. We want this to be felt as a pleasant, natural activity in the context of investigating the literary text, not as an old and boring practice. Especially in the primary classes, the critical reception of an artistic text, in traditional Romanian education, also involves this identification of the moral values transmitted by the literary text, and their analysis. However, the current didactics do not make references in this sense, but the usefulness of discussing the moralizing aspects contained in the text is unquestionable. This is why we feel it’s necessary to present our point of view towards this practice and to propose solutions in this regard. We mainly had in mind the external conditions of learning that are related to the internal ones, aiming at the production of insights and the longevity of the retention of memorized contents.
