Да слушаш страданието: социоанализата и „патосният“ обрат в понятието за опит

Author(s): Svetlana Sabeva / Language(s): Bulgarian Issue: 1-2/2016

The article relates socioanalysis to the so-called ‘science of the suffering subject; as developed on the borders between phenomenological anthropology, psychopathology and psychoanalysis. Before any scientific or clinical objectivation (typification, diagnosis etc.), this ‘science’ – or, rather, analytic – thematizes the affective space of suffering, viewing it not only as intrapsychic but as intersubjective, intercorporeal and shareable, without presupposing the practical dualisms (between psychic and somatic, individual and social, abnormal and normal) or the division of labour between the ‘sufferance experts’. The text focuses on one of the instances in this affective space – the ‘ear’ of the analyst (who can be a lay person) and the listening to the other’s suffering. The first section thematizes the pathos turn in the concept of experience, placing it in the historical context of Benjamin’s diagnosis of the ‘devaluation of experience’, the weakening of its communicability, and the ‘decline of storytelling’. The second section problematizes – in the context of an actual case – the limits of dialogue in the course of narrative construction of identity, as well as the corporeal ‘enactment’ of a situation of vulnerability. The third paragraph presents situations of professional listening – correspondingly the suffering of the schizophrenic (in the dispositive of phenomenological psychopathology) and the ‘everyday sufferance from society’ (in the dispositive of Bourdieu’s socioanalysis. This demonstrates how precisely self-telling and self-understanding today are increasingly more and more constituted as from the active, maieutic listening. The article argues that the maieutic listener represents a specific ‘transitional figure of experience’ and a ‘primary representative’ (in the sense of Waldenfels) of the suffering subject, one to whom is due a fundamental achievement of social life: reflexive existential knowledge, respectively – the recognition of suffering.

Метафорите на Ерос

Author(s): Nevena Krumova / Language(s): Bulgarian Issue: 2-3/2017

The author aims to study the manifestations of Eros as an element of the virtual. The metaphor is the field, the language, in which we speak of the phenomena of the virtual. Hence, the article studies the metaphors of Eros. However, Eros has two sides – there is an objectivated and a non-objectivated Eros (earth and heavenly Eros). Therefore, a question arises: do the metaphors of the non-objectivated Eros differ from the metaphors of the objectivated Eros? To ingress the specificity of such a study, we will review in greater depth the metaphors relevant to Eros used by certain authors in Russian religious philosophy. The article discusses how schematism works for these metaphors with respect to the objectivated and non-objectivated aspects of Eros.

Съвременното изкуство и идеята за визуалното безсмъртие

Author(s): Peter Tzanev / Language(s): English,Bulgarian Issue: 4/2017

The idea of “the human soul” is usually seen as a proto-psychological concept, and not as a basic aesthetic category. From the perspective of psychology, we find it quite natural that the idea of the soul is destined to die with the demise of the idea of immortality. In art, however, in the modern era, the idea of immortality remains fundamental. The modern idea of art is built on the idea of visual immortality. It can speculate that art is a historically variable concept which functions as a substitute term for visual immortality of the soul. In the 20th century, the conversion of the soul into a complex image of human inner mental life led to a radical change in the attitudes, expressed in the visual arts, towards immortality. The demand for a new unifying center that replaces the notion of soul is driving modern and contemporary art to visualize new ideas regarding modern man’s personality structure and distinct types of consciousness.

Семантични манипулации в публичния дискурс

Author(s): Martin Tabakov / Language(s): English,Bulgarian Issue: 5/2017

The article discusses semantic manipulations in which manipulative suggestions are made using specially selected words. Some of these examples of manipulations have become established and are very hard to refute. The notions of “left-wing” and “right-wing” are mutually related mainly in terms of state intervention in the economy and redistribution. It is not correct to qualify populist, nationalist, xenophobic political parties – or, recently, anti-immigrant parties – as “extreme right”, when there is actually a very small “right-wing” component in them and they are primarily “left-wing”. In referring to the National Socialists as “Nazi”, the word “Socialist” is manipulatively concealed. The article also indicates the semantically incorrect use of phrases such as “Turkish slavery”, “corruption”, “king”, “Russophile”, “majority”, etc.

Computer Aided Interpreting (CAI) for Conference Interpreters. Concepts, Content and Prospects

Author(s): Martin WILL / Language(s): English Issue: 25 (1)/2020

While specific and relatively uniform software is used in translationthroughout the industry, only a minority of interpreters today uses dedicatedsoftware for their assignments and even less during the creation of the final product, the interpretation. This is even more surprising as there are already solutionsavailable today that make it possible to considerably automate an interpretingassignment. It is argued that many interpreters refuse to use computers forinterpreting or have little idea of the possibilities of Computer Aided Interpreting(CAI) but there is also a certain confusion in literature as regards the usage of theterm “CAI”. Therefore, in the following, an overview of major developments in thisfield and a comparison with translation will be given in order to derive adifferentiated definition of the term “Computer Aided Interpreting”. Subsequently, amodel workflow will be used to demonstrate existing computer based applicationsthat allow already now to considerably automate a complete interpreting assignment. In a further step, these products will be critically evaluated. Finally, an outlook onfuture developments and trends in the field of CAI will be given. The aim of thiscontribution is to give a coherent overview of CAI and thus contribute to its betterunderstanding.

METHODS OF TEACHING GERMAN AS FOREIGN LANGUAGE TO ROMANIAN STUDENTS

Author(s): Georgiana Obadă,Nicoleta SFINȚIȚCHI / Language(s): English Issue: 11/2019

The world is a puzzle constructed of a variety of different language speaking nations, and the individuals’ multilingualism leads to a better communication and cooperation between them. Speaking many languages represents a beneficial method for the process of cognitive development. Moreover, speaking many languages improves the efficiency of the cognitive processes and stimulates the memory; the brain becomes more active, thus preventing degradation by permanently searching for the meaning of and the links between words. Considering the actual requests imposed by the globalization of societies, speaking foreign languages became essential in establishing good social, political and economic relationships with other citizens. Studying, researching, cultural development or even building a career becomes more facile when the linguistic baggage carries more languages. Another argument is favored by scientists’ research who demonstrated that studying a foreign language helps people having more knowledge about their native language because it determines them analyze and understand the previously perceived linguistic phenomena.

Since local associative research has, so far, been oriented towards the East and Russia, the aim of this paper is to give an overview of lesser-known, but interesting Western research, which could be of use to our linguists in the future. The associative method is used in different branches of the social sciences, but here we will focus on achievements in areas closest to our researchers: the use of this method with corpora, in order to facilitate vocabulary search; the construction of mental lexicon models based on verbal associations; and the use of these associations in the field of applied linguistics, in regard to second language acquisition.

Приповијетке Предрага Степановића (љубавне)

Приповијетке Предрага Степановића (љубавне)

Author(s): Rada B. Stanarević / Language(s): Serbian Issue: 21/2020

In this paper, the author deals with Predrag Stepanović’s short stories, featuring romantic sentiments written in the period of 1965-2005. They discuss autobiographical stories of Nepovrat and Pobijte plave kanarince, taking place in the present day, alongside with an early novel by the same author, Prepolovljeni, since all three texts highlight unfortunate young love. Unlike these three, whose plot is unrelated to the writer’s home country, the following two short stories, Ludačka romansa and Arhetipski krimić, feature past events in Stepanović’s home town of Mohacs (Hungary). This time, however, the writer’s persona is not in the spotlight, it is merely just one of the fictitious narrators, rendering these short stories as not purely autobiographical, although the writer appears as the first-person narrator. Instead, the protagonists in the story of Ludačka romansa are two mentally deranged characters, namely Luda Mara and Kolesar, while the story of Arhetipski krimić is centred around Marika, a famous beauty from ancient times, best known for her ‘wicked’ eyes. In oral tradition, she is thought to be a dragon’s daughter. Using this legend as a starting point in his own story, Stepanović, with great skill, penetrates deeply into the souls and actions of his characters, which results in a series of all-time and irrational archetypal motifs, such as a dragon’s love, witchcraft, and a murder caused by a magic spell. The last of the short stories discussed, with the somewhat mysterious title of Usudne reči, is embedded into the WWII milieu. On the other hand, it is a documentary. It is a known fact that there was the Sarvar concentration camp in old Hungary intended for Serbs (mainly for women, children, and the elderly). At the same time, this is a destiny-revealing story. The plot within a plot depicts a young Serbian woman named Duša and her two sons, who are prisoners in a kamp for 'chetniks' ('Csetniktábor'), and a young married couple from Hungary with a baby girl who hire Duša as househelp. When Duša loses both her sons due to a typhoid epidemic in the camp, she transfers all her love to the baby girl, she sings and talks to her in Serbian with such warmth that her words determine the girl's destiny. The main plot features a mother of a grown-up young woman that tells this story, with the punchline of the story presenting us with the fact that her daughter married the only Serb she had ever met.

Adolescencja jako permanentny kryzys. Filmoterapeutyczna analiza serialu Ania, nie Anna

Adolescencja jako permanentny kryzys. Filmoterapeutyczna analiza serialu Ania, nie Anna

Author(s): Karolina Gierszewska / Language(s): Polish Issue: 1/2019

For many generations of women, Lucy Maud Montgomery’s Anne of Green Gables (1908) has been a faithful companion in the process of coming of age. Nevertheless, when judged solely by its setting and timeframe (1870s and 1880s), and the moment of its publication (the beginning of the 20th century), the book might appear some¬what anachronic. Several attempts at bringing Anne’s story to life on both the big and small screen have been made, but only one of them – Moira Walley-Beckett’s Anne with an E (2017–Present), produced for Canadian public network CBC and widely distributed by Netflix − can be said to have captured the novel’s spirit by re-embedding it in a truly modern context. The main goal of this paper is to analyse various elements of Walley-Beckett’s take on Montgomery’s opus with regard to their potential usefulness in therapeutic practice with young adults. The reflec¬tions made in the article are accompanied by contextual references to Hanna Lib-erska’s general model of identity development and Małgorzata Kozubek’s theory of cinema therapy.

Is the Film as Empowering as the Book? Studying Empowerment in A Monster Calls

Is the Film as Empowering as the Book? Studying Empowerment in A Monster Calls

Author(s): Fatemeh Farnia / Language(s): English Issue: 1/2019

The aim of the paper is to discuss A Monster Calls (2016) by J. A. Bayona, a film adaptation of Patrick Ness’s novel (2011) of the same title, based on an original idea by Siobhan Dowd, from the empowerment theory perspective. The author of the article indicates that there are some significant changes between the book and the motion picture, especially when it comes to the ways of empowering the protagonist and the works’ potential young audience. The results of this comparative study show that the film is more affectively empowering than the novel. This is mainly because in the book, Ness skillfully uses verbal narration (accompanied by Jim Kay’s illustrations), while in the film, Bayona takes advantage of the possibilities offered by the audiovisual medium, therefore providing the audience with artistic and psychological empowerments.

Historical, Religious, and Political Content in Harper Lee’s To Kill a Mocking Bird

Author(s): Saeid Rahimipour / Language(s): English Issue: 25/2020

Literary works have contributed a crucial role to the manifestation of the dominant themes of the time and the era to which they belong. Each writer and each work has a special orientation in its approach to convey the intended message. This article, having as its approach context and metacontext analysis of the text, scrutinizes Harper Lee’s novel To Kill a Mocking Bird in order to assess the writer’s tact in the illustration of specific issues through the manifestation of their cultural, historical, and religious context and background. Through the introduction of these materials, this study has also tried to answer the question concerning the manner in which the writer has captured the theme of racism via the projection of the unseen, unfathomable, and the unobjectionable information of the mentioned origins to touch upon our consciousness and arouse sympathy towards the humanitarian crisis practised at that time. The article reveals the plausibility of the interpretation of the novel based on religious, historical, and cultural background references. It renders the fact that Lee contributed a significant share to the illustration of such themes as racism and inhumanness at that time and stands as a landmark of inspiration for others as well.

Is Right-wing Populism a Phenomenon of Religious Dissent? The Cases of the Lega and the Rassemblement National

Is Right-wing Populism a Phenomenon of Religious Dissent? The Cases of the Lega and the Rassemblement National

Author(s): Luca Ozzano,Fabio Bolzonar / Language(s): English Issue: 1/2020

The current global political landscape is increasingly marked by the growth of right-wing populist parties. Although this party family has been the subject of a bourgeoning scholarship, the role played by religion in shaping its ideology is still an under-researched topic. Drawing on the qualitative context analysis of a large database of newspaper articles, electoral manifestos, and parties’ documents, this article studies the influence of religion on the political platforms of the Lega Nord (LN – recently rebranded just Lega) in Italy and the Front National (recently renamed Rassemblement National – RN) in France since the early 1980s. Our aim is twofold. Firstly, we would like to describe the role of religious values in the different political phases of the life of these parties. Secondly, we wish to assess whether and to which extent the appropriation of religion by these parties can be considered a phenomenon of religious dissent. Our analysis focuses on LGBT+ rights, a policy field that tends to bear the imprint of religion norms. Past studies have noted that right-wing populist parties support not only a nativist idea of citizenship, which prompts anti-immigrants and anti-Islamic stances, but also conservative interpretations of Christian values in terms of family issues and gender roles. In the last three decades, European right-wing populist parties have partly revised their positions on these issues. While some of them, like the Lega, have strengthened or made only marginal changes to their religiously-inspired moral conservatism, others, like the RN, have shown new openings on gender equality and LGBT+ rights.

Finding the Right Islam for the Maldives: Political Transformation and State-Responses to Growing Religious Dissent

Finding the Right Islam for the Maldives: Political Transformation and State-Responses to Growing Religious Dissent

Author(s): La Toya Waha / Language(s): English Issue: 1/2020

At the first glance, the Maldives appear not to be prone to religious conflict. The archipelago state comprises a religiously and ethnically homogenous society, the different islands have been subject to shared Islamic rule for centuries and even constitutionally religious homogeneity is granted by making every citizen a Muslim and religious diversity prevented by limiting naturalisation to a specific Muslim group. Yet, today allegations of a threat to Islam play a major role in political mobilisation, the Maldives are faced with Islamist violence, and Maldivians have joined the Islamic State and al Qaeda in disproportionally high numbers. The paper seeks to find an answer to the question of how the repression of dissent under the Gayoom regime and the expansion and rise of violent Islamism relate in the Maldivian context. Next to the theoretical model, the paper will provide an introduction to the Maldivian political culture and the reasons for changes therein. It will shed light on the emergence of three major Islamic streams in the Maldivian society, which stood opposed to one another by the late 1990s and early 2000s, and show how Gayoom’s state repression of dissent initiated an escalation process and furthered Islamist violent politics. The paper will argue that while state repression of dissent played a significant role in the repertoire selection of Islamic non-state agents, the introduction of fundamentalist Islamic interpretations through migration, educational exchange programmes and transnational actors have laid the ground for violence in the Maldives.

Tar & Feathers: Agnotology, Dissent, and Queer Mormon History

Tar & Feathers: Agnotology, Dissent, and Queer Mormon History

Author(s): Nerida Bullock / Language(s): English Issue: 1/2020

In 2014 the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints (LDS Church) updated their official website to include information about the polygamy/polyandry practiced by Joseph Smith, their founder and prophet, and his many wives. The admission by the LDS Church reconciles the tension between information that had become readily available online since the 1990s and church-sanctioned narratives that obscured Smith’s polygamy while concurrently focusing on the polygyny of Brigham Young, Smith’s successor. This paper entwines queer theory with Robert Proctor’s concept of agnotology—a term used to describe the epistemology of ignorance, to consider dissent from two interrelated perspectives: 1) how dissent from feminists and historians within the LDS Church challenged (mis)constructions of Mormon history, and; 2) how the Mormon practice of polygamy in the late nineteenth century dissented from Western sexual mores that conflated monogamy with Whiteness, democracy and social progression in the newly formed American Republic.

PSYCHO-SOCIAL CONSEQUENCES OF WAR CRIMES OF RAPE IN THE ĐAKOVO-OSIJEK ARCHDIOCESE DURING THE GREATER-SERBIAN AGGRESSION

PSYCHO-SOCIAL CONSEQUENCES OF WAR CRIMES OF RAPE IN THE ĐAKOVO-OSIJEK ARCHDIOCESE DURING THE GREATER-SERBIAN AGGRESSION

Author(s): Sanja Kopunović Legetin,Suzana Vuletić,Stanislav Šota / Language(s): English Issue: 1/2020

Defining war as the most tragic form of anti-humanism, anti-personalism and anti-culturalism, the authors address the war crime of rape as the most difficult form of traumatic experience. The introductory section of the paper presents crimes and abuses at many levels that are characteristic for every war, including the Croatian War of Independence. Among all forms of traumatic experience, rape is reported as a complex event characterized by extremely negative emotional consequences that leave severe and lasting consequences visible in the everyday life of the traumatized person. The first part of the paper deals with life after a traumatic rape event. The second part is largely devoted to the psychosocial consequences that rape victims of war live with today. The authors use the findings of a survey of rape victims from the War of Independence in the area of the Đakovo-Osijek Archdiocese. Based on testimonies, predominant feelings among victims are described, as well as mechanisms to manage these feelings and live with the trauma. The paper also describes the challenges faced by family members and society in providing support. The third part particularly emphasizes the consequences of the Greater-Serbian aggression during the War of Independence in the Đakovo-Osijek Archdiocese.

Słownik psychologiczno-lingwistyczny "Zmysły, emocje i przymiotniki języka rosyjskiego" – nowe narzędzie w pracy tłumacza

Author(s): Joanna Orzechowska / Language(s): Polish Issue: XXII/2020

This article presents a new type of dictionary – a linguistic-psychological dictionary reflecting structures of language, similar to dictionaries based on associations, but also reconstructing the mental and emotional states of an average user of the Russian language. It was compiled as a result of analyzing 15918 Russian adjectives from the perspective of their relationship with emotions originating in reference to various senses. The dictionary contains information on “the emotional load” of these adjectives, that is how pleasant or how unpleasant emotions a given adjective evokes. The analyzed lexemes were assessed by respondents on the scale of emotions: slightly (un)pleasant – moderately (un)pleasant – very (un)pleasant, which was marked with an appropriate number of pluses or minuses. It cannot be overestimated how useful such a dictionary and the information it contains are. Although it is believed that representatives of different cultures experience universal emotions, their quality and intensity hidden behind particular linguistic units can diverge between different cultural-linguistic communities. Emotions are conditioned socially, culturally, and historically; they play an important role in international communication. Thus when they are incompetently and mistakenly interpreted, this can disturb dialogue between various cultures and even lead to conflicts. In the article, considering equivalents cygarowy/сигарный, differences in the evaluation of these adjectives in Polish and Russian are presented, illustrating the need to look for emotionally adequate translation equivalents when rendering them.

TATTOOS AND TABOOS IN INTERCULTURAL COMMUNICATION

Author(s): Raluca Ghenţulescu / Language(s): English Issue: 2/2019

When communicating with people from other cultures, one has to pay attention to their verbal and non-verbal messages. Besides what they actually say, it is equally important to notice what they do not say, what gestures they make – or avoid making – and what other ways of expressing themselves they resort to. Tattoos and taboos are two of the key factors that are worth taking into consideration when dealing with people from other countries, as they may reveal interesting aspects of their personality and culture. Both tattoos and taboos have ancient origins and reach the deepest levels of humanity. They can explain how we have evolved as acultural species endowed with the power of communicating both through language and through images or gestures. This article aims at presenting the importance of tattoos and taboos for understanding the core features of a culture, with a view to improving intercultural communication.
