Author(s): V.V. Abashev / Language(s): Russian Issue: 1/2015

The article considers public monuments in a rhetorical perspective – as manifestations of local identity, or statements about the nature and mission of the city. It is demonstrated that there exist two competing monumental rhetorics in the urban environment of Perm. The industrial-military rhetoric unites an extensive group of monuments dating back to the Soviet era and those newly erected. Such monuments inscribe Perm into the heroic discourse of the Soviet epoch. Although the soviet memorial policy used to be universal for the whole state, in Perm it is not lacking for local individuality. Here, in particular, instruments of production and sample armament are displayed in the function of monuments. An alternative to this industrial-military rhetoric could be viewed in that of ‘Perm the Great’ (Perm’ Velikaya). It aggregates monuments appealing to the archaic heritage and ancient history of Perm Krai. This group of monuments suggests an image of Perm as a successor to the ancient culture, a city that made a special contribution to the history of Russian culture. Rhetoric of ‘Perm the Great’ was actively developed in the 2000-s. One of its distinctive features is the motive of Permian animal style. These are employed both in sculpture and in architectural decorum. The article establishes that the urban environment development highlights the multi layered and multidimensional nature of the city identity and its irreducibilty to a common denominator. Likewise, territory images construction, though sometimes acquiring a form of the search for a metaphysical substance of a city, such as Genius Loci, is in fact a ground for struggle and competition of various social, professional and political groups.

Od elektronicznej muzyki do elektronicznego obrazu. Exposition of Music – Electronic Television Nam June Paika

Od elektronicznej muzyki do elektronicznego obrazu. Exposition of Music – Electronic Television Nam June Paika

Author(s): Maryla Zając / Language(s): Polish Issue: 04 (31)/2016

Nam June Paik (1932–2006) is now considered to be the most influential creator in visual arts. He is said to be the first artist who presented television as a source of artistic experience. However, nowadays many people forget about his musical beginnings. Starting as a musician, he was inspired by, for example, John Cage, whose philosophical way of thinking had a positive impact on Paik’s future experiments with music and objects. Exposition of Music – Electronic Television (1963, Wuppertal) was artist’s symbolic transfer from music to visual arts, presenting prepared pianos together with prepared TV’s. The article presents the exhibition as well as the environment created by Paik, showing the equality, importance and impact of two not so different kinds of art.

Dwu(wielo)języczny teatr w zglobelizowanym kontekście brytyjskim, czyli o różnych stylach dramatu migracyjno-transkulturowego

Author(s): Elwira Grossman / Language(s): Polish Issue: 3/2016

Focusing on selected bi(multi)lingual plays recently performed in the UK, the essay deals with the broader theme of intercultural communication and Polish migrants’ contribution to the local target culture. Grossman examines the possibility of creating a new transcultural form of theatre as an artistic means of facilitating mutual understanding and intercultural experiences. She suggests replacing the question of artistic merit by the shows’ function in reinforcing intercultural dialogue. The performances discussed are shown not only to strengthen the migrants’ integration but also to secure their feeling of emotional and cosmopolitan belonging to a globalized world without undermining their sense of human dignity and their belief in social equality.

Polska poezja na Wyspach: podczas wieczorów panuje tu nostalgia

Author(s): Anna Kałuża / Language(s): Polish Issue: 3/2016

Kałuża describes the communicational conditions, politico-cultural perspectives and aesthetic or artistic approach to poems in the work of Polish poets residing outside Poland. As a point of departure she proposes to substitute twenty-first-century emigre narratives with notions of cultural encounters and everyday writing practices. Based on an analysis of both the poems and the traditions in which they are rooted, Kałuża proposes her principal thesis that these works are tied to a monolithic and conservative model of culture.

Отглеждането на застрашени от изчезване местни породи в европеизираща се България: фактори, стратегии, наративи

Author(s): Nacho Dimitrov / Language(s): Bulgarian Issue: 2/2017

The ecological turn in the Common Agricultural Policy of the EU places strong emphasis on biodiversity and conservation of genetic resources and creates opportunities for subsidized raising of endangered landraces. In Bulgaria, these developments have led to the increase of the number of the certifying breeding associations and the farmers within this particular business niche as well as of the breeds and the total number of the animals of each breed. Recently, growing numbers of actors become interested in the attractive subsidies and further involved in the processes of conservation, recovery, imagination and invention of landraces. However, the subsidies are a scarce resource so the access to them creates competition and conflicts. The actors apply various strategies in order to obtain subsidies; they strive to build a convincing, legitimate narrative about the origin, the authenticity, the risk status and even the cultural value of the animals while at the same time trying to discredit and de-legitimize the breeds of their competitors. As a result, the struggle for access to the subsidies takes the form of a struggle of narratives.

Икономиката среща традицията. Конструиране и употреба на културно наследство в стопански контекст

Author(s): Ivanka Petrova / Language(s): Bulgarian Issue: 2/2017

The global consumption tendency leading to the increase of the share of natural and organic products could be illustrated by the growing internal attitudes and demands in Bulgaria for handmade bread prepared in small bakeries. The owners of such bakeries claim that in the course of their work and through their results they endeavor at filling a particular market niche – for healthy and environment-friendly nutrition. While focusing on the use of raw materials of the highest quality in the production of bread, they also apply cultural techniques to construct the image of bread as cultural value inherited from the past and conceptualize the technologies and ways of production as social actions signifying ‘return to traditions’. Thus the entrepreneurs stage the production and supply of a product with enormous symbol value exceeding its market price or even disproportionate to it and engage themselves in the production of cultural heritage. Of course, parallel to that the cultural valuation of hand-made bread also aims at its economizing. The text presents the narrative strategies of several bakers owning small bakeries in Bulgaria, who represent the process of production of hand-made bread by investing it with the characteristics of cultural heritage. The author analyses these strategies alongside with the examining of the self-representation of the members of Bulgarian Guild of Bakers branch organization during their participation in the Spring Fair of Crafts in Plovdiv between 23 and 26 April 2015.

Paradygmat emancypacyjny? O możliwym nowym zwrocie politycznym w polskim kulturoznawstwie inspirowanym tradycją CCCS

Author(s): Jacek Drozda / Language(s): Polish Issue: 01/2014

The intellectual tradition of the “Birmingham school” is without a doubt one of the fundamental ingredients of Polish cultural studies. Nevertheless, it had been inscribed into the Polish leg of this complex discipline in a very specific, sometimes distorted manner. This text explores the political dimension of cultural studies and their potential as a useful critical approach in the epoch of neoliberal hegemony. In spite of the fact that British cultural studies of the CCCS (Centre of Contemporary Cultural Studies) tradition and Polish academic approaches to modern culture had developed in very different political and social conditions and there had been very few, if any, direct interactions between them, they share many ideas. Today, the depoliticisation of Polish humanities, although not overwhelming, is remarkable. In the time of a multilayered crisis, researching culture should not be devoted only to the “politics of pleasure” but also to the relation between the contemporary politics, economics and culture in general. In this essay, the author proposes one of the potential ways of exit from this problematic situation which is based on juxtaposing and re‐examining the scientific and political heritage of the cultural studies, some elements of Polish anthropology, Marxism and their postmodern reinterpretations. It takes form of an open framework, the “emancipatory paradigm”. New look at the CCCS tradition is proposed as a tool that enables the recapturing of crucial elements of political critique such as class analysis which has been almost abandoned by the practitioners of Polish cultural studies due to its historical burden generated by the vulgarised Marxism under the communist regime.
