#METOO AND US POLITICS: ANALYSING THE TWITTER CONVERSATION

#METOO AND US POLITICS: ANALYSING THE TWITTER CONVERSATION

Author(s): Vittoria Bernardini / Language(s): English / Issue: 3/2021

The #MeToo movement has had a profound cultural impact on US society, and notably on US party politics. While many studies have addressed the #MeToo-related controversy arising from the Brett Kavanaugh nomination to Supreme Court Justice in 2018, the relationship between #MeToo and US politics before this event has remained understudied. This article, therefore, addresses this gap by looking at the role of politics at the beginning of the #MeToo movement. Focusing on the first six months of online activity on Twitter (October 2017 – April 2018), over 2 million tweets with the #MeToo hashtag are analyzed to identify the main activity patterns across the dataset and to gain insight on user behavior and participation in the conversation. Results point to the weaponization of #MeToo in the political context from its inception. It is suggested that #MeToo reflects the polarized political climate in the US and that it can be conceptualized as part of the wider “culture wars” (Hunter 1991) that characterize the public debate.

North West Bulgaria and Bessarabia in Comparison

Author(s): Yana Yancheva / Language(s): English / Issue: 23/2022

This study is based on the comparison of the results of an ethnographic research on the process of socialist agricultural collectivization in Bulgaria and among the so-called Bulgarians and Gagauzes from Bessarabia in Southern Moldova and Southern Ukraine. I focus on the problems of peasant’s affection to land and property during the process of collectivization and their resistance to join the co-operative farms and kolkhozes. I problematize the traumatic experiencing of collectivization and analyze the emotions that were driving and affecting people. The analysis relies on the biographical approach and on the study of memory work.

Acceptance and Rejection during Fieldwork in Greek Macedonia

Author(s): Paraskevas Potiropoulos / Language(s): English / Issue: 23/2022

The paper considers the ambivalent situations of acceptance and rejection of the researcher during fieldwork in Greek Macedonia. It focuses on both the researcher’s and the interlocutors’ positionalities, as well as their impact on this relationship as a crucial part of the research process. The paper discusses how the management of these positionalities and the emerging emotions enable the understanding, interpretation and representation of the local identity in the liminal place of borders as an interplay between locality, ethnicity and national identity. Furthermore, it concerns the various dimensions of doing anthropology domistically, as part of the core anthropological methodology. The emotional dynamics between the researcher and the interlocutors have questioned the notions of the insider and the outsider; alterity and strangeness and have revealed the multiple dimensions of anthropology at home. Ultimately, it concerns the function of the emotions in a sensitive ethnography in order to overcome the cultural barriers and the othering process.

AN ALBANIAN HISTORICAL BALLAD AND THE PARALLEL EXISTENCE IN PERFORMANCE

AN ALBANIAN HISTORICAL BALLAD AND THE PARALLEL EXISTENCE IN PERFORMANCE

Author(s): Arbnora Dushi / Language(s): English / Publication Year: 0

In Albanian-language folk tradition, The Ballad of Halit Gashi is categorized as historical because of its central figure and the historical event that it presents. The event occurred during the Ottoman occupation in the Balkan region, but the song itself has come down to us and continues to be actively performanced. This song is part of the folk repertoire, accompanied with vernacular stringed instruments such as çiftelia. But at the same time it has a public life in mass culture, performed as a genre of urban music. Both versions, the folk and the urban, continue to exist in parallel and represent different social and cultural dimensions that echo the different social and cultural communities of Albanian-speaking society in Kosovo and Albania. Is it the theme of the song, the text, sensitivity of the theme, music, singer, or the taste of the public that continues to keep The Ballad of Halit Gashi alive? Why does this song continue to have two parallel performance traditions: the folk and the pop? What conditions led to a modern version in the urban style? Parallel existence of both types signifies coexistence of tradition and modernity in Albanian-speaking society. While comparing versions of the song and their characteristic elements, we will examine the social and cultural of society, drawing on the work of Sadri Fetiu, Gene Bluestein, Marjetka Golež, Rory Archer, Mathew Gelbart, and others, and with the help of social anthropology, we will try to be able to find these answers.

Anne Kimliğine Kuramsal Bir Bakış (2000-2020)

Anne Kimliğine Kuramsal Bir Bakış (2000-2020)

Author(s): Özlem Kale / Language(s): Turkish / Issue: 1/2022

It has been determined twenty seven stories and novels titled with 'mother' in Turkish literature between 2000 and 2020. These works are thematically classified and those selected by stratified sampling were analysed with psychoanalysis or logotherapy method. Some specific outcomes are achieved with psychoanalysis of the mother characters in these works. In the majority of the works, it is represented as if motherhood and individual existence can not be all together. In small number of the stories, the women are criticized for not participating in social life and being housewives despite being educated. In the works highlighting the harms of gender discrimination, it is underlined that women should be first treated as "person" instead of "spouse and mother". Given the big effect of literature on public opinion, it is obvious that this should be emphasized in more works in order to make the right woman perspective become widespread. The woman has the ability to provide the continuation of the generation by nature. However, motherhood is not a genetic specification of woman but a social structure. The societies are adopted with the rule of the child needing a mother for living. As the economical production values the child, the motherhood is valued in the society and the ideal motherhood is shaped in these conditions. Our work will be eye-opening in terms of emphasizing the importance of this ideal by mass communication and literature too.

ANTROPOLOGIJA PROSTORA U KONTEKSTU ISTRAŽIVANJA FENOMENA „PRODUŽENE MLADOSTI“

ANTROPOLOGIJA PROSTORA U KONTEKSTU ISTRAŽIVANJA FENOMENA „PRODUŽENE MLADOSTI“

Author(s): Katarina Mitrović / Language(s): Serbian / Issue: 1/2021

Social inequalities, which have increased with the globalization process, show significant differences from previous periods. The deepening of inequalities, their self-producing nature and the expansion of their sphere of influence are at the forefront of these differences. This is one of the important reasons why social inequalities have become a subject of interest for many social scientists, especially sociologists. Bauman also included the subject of social inequality in his works. In this study, it is aimed to reveal the different aspects of Bauman's approach to social inequality. For this purpose, Bauman's works on the subject were examined and his views on social inequality were tried to be understood.
