Mitmekihiline Setumaa

Author(s): Lembit Vaba / Language(s): Estonian Issue: 12/2014

The article addresses some etymological issues of the place names of Setumaa, which have hitherto received insufficient attention, if any. Those issues include Baltic substrate names. Немски сложни съществителни в специализирани текстове и техните съответствия в български език – формален и семантичен анализ на мотивационните отношения между непосредствено съставящите им (2. част)

Author(s): Milkа Encheva / Language(s): Bulgarian Issue: 2/2013

The present paper represents a unilateral contrastive study with German as the source language. The object is a motive analysis of the formal and semantic relations between the immediate constituents of the German composite nouns and their Bulgarian equivalents in specialized texts from the field of technical chemistry. The first part of the paper – due to the limited space – the research model in the contrastive analysis is elaborated and only the semantic motive analysis of the immediate constituents of German composite nouns and their Bulgarian equivalents is carried out. In the second part of the paper the formal motive analysis and the projection of the semantic relations onto the formal structures are carried out.

Към въпроса за произхода на чертковия (московския) препис на “История славянобългарска” на Паисий Хилендарски

Author(s): Marina Frolova / Language(s): Bulgarian Issue: 2/2012

The Chertkov (Moscow) transcript of Paissy Hilendarski’s “A Slavo- Bulgarian History” was discovered in 1960 and it remained for a long time unattributed. Adducing new archive data has made it possible to determine the circumstances and the year when it was made and also to account for the fact of its creation on the basis of the ancient Zheravnenski transcript – the exact whereabouts of the latter still remain unknown, as well as to add new detail to our knowledge about the Russian – Bulgarian cultural ties from the 19th century.

Кънчо-Стояновият препис (1844 г.) на „История славянобългарска” и неговият език

Author(s): Niya Radeva / Language(s): Bulgarian Issue: 2/2012

The transcript of “Slavo-Bulgarian History”, done by the Turnovian Kancho Stoyanov in 1844, reflects the late reception of Paisiy’s work. The textological examination and a close study of the language of the manuscript show that it is based on several transcripts, with different genealogy and a different balance between more archaic morphological, syntactic and lexical traits on the one hand, and elements typical of the spoken language during the first half of the XIX century, on the other. In terms of language the transcript is not uniform.

Езикът на повестта „Пиян баща, убиец на децата си” от Илия Р. Блъсков

Езикът на повестта „Пиян баща, убиец на децата си” от Илия Р. Блъсков

Author(s): Ivo Bratanov / Language(s): Bulgarian Issue: 2/2012

The article is a detailed account of the language used in “Drunk Father, Murderer of His Children”, a novel written by the Bulgarian Revival writer Iliya R. Bluskov and published in 1879–1880. The article tackles major graphic, spelling, phonetic, morphological and syntactic traits of the language in this text. Here one can trace theinfluence of local vernacular and of Bulgarian literary tradition on the author’s language. The analysis shows that Iliya R. Bluskov follows the language-spelling model of the Shumen literary school and that he has contributed to the general acceptance of a number of phonetic and morphological norms which have now been adopted in modern Standard Bulgarian.

O etymologii leksemów legawiec oraz wyżeł w języku polskim

O etymologii leksemów legawiec oraz wyżeł w języku polskim

Author(s): Beata Malczewska / Language(s): Polish Issue: 21/2022

This paper puts forth and examines hypotheses regarding the etymology of the Polish words legawiec (pointing dog) and wyżeł (gundog), both used to denote pointing dogs. The origin of the first name is documented and fairly uncontroversial. It has been subject to numerous analyses. On the contrary, the origin of wyżeł is uncertain. In the paper, various linguistic, breed- and hunting-related hypotheses are discussed. They suggest either Slavic or Hungarian origin of the term. Examples of folk etymology are also discussed. In spite of a rich literature of various types (linguistic, cynological, and related to hunting), the proper etymology cannot be established. Likewise, the precise motivation for wyżeł cannot be reconstructed. From among a multitude of linguistic proposals, derived from cynological writings and those of the history of hunting, the Hungarian origin seems most probable and best confirmed by the existing documents.

System i formy polonistycznej edukacji dzieci polskich uchodźców we Francji w latach 1919–1945 (wybrane zagadnienia)

System i formy polonistycznej edukacji dzieci polskich uchodźców we Francji w latach 1919–1945 (wybrane zagadnienia)

Author(s): Anna Pachowicz / Language(s): Polish Issue: 2/2022

The aim of this article is to characterise the system and forms of teaching the Polish language to children of Polish emigrants in France between 1919 and 1945. The time frames are not accidental as they are marked by two important dates. 1919 marks the beginning of economic emigration of Poles to France, which lasted until the outbreak of the Second World War, while 1945 marks the end of the war. The basis for the considerations presented are archival sources collected primarily at the Polish Library in Paris and Polish and French-language publications related to the subject in question. Teaching of the Polish language to children and young people or the continuation of the Polish language education once begun in Poland was an extremely important aspect of maintaining Polish identity and allowed the Polish community to survive the difficult period of emigration. The Polish émigré community strived to ensure that teaching of the mother tongue was conducted systematically, intensively and effectively.

Homer i współczesny folklor – różny czas, jedna tradycja

Homer i współczesny folklor – różny czas, jedna tradycja

Author(s): Jerzy Sierociuk / Language(s): English Issue: 1/2020

In the article; I present an issue of importance to the interpretation of folk culture; namely if texts representing contemporary folklore to some extent continue the traditional poetic structure. The major question is if contemporary folklore may go back to the time when oral culture prevailed. Original folk texts from various Slavic nations were subjected to an analysis. The textual persistence of identical elements of the poetics of folk works in all Slavic languages is an argument in favour of a thesis that these structures go back to the proto-Slavic community. The occurrence of folklore units; absent from dialects and the literary language; is evidence of their proto-Slavic origin. The formulaic discourse of the epics of Slavic folklore and the like structure of Homer’s texts allow to advance an argument that both textual structures have the same origin and come from one tradition while the time of documenting thereof is different.

Nowa deiksa? Nowa anafora? Nowa semantyka? Językowa gra w oczywistość płci

Author(s): Arkadiusz Jabłoński / Language(s): Polish Issue: 1/2021

The investigation of language and language processes is based on the assumption that they are related to a certain verifiable reality. Still, not all parameters of language express the reality in an exact manner. Moreover, the postulate to render strictly the actual properties of designates in language may reveal the hallmarks of a manipulative communication game. In the paper, an analysis of some fragmentary, chosen, although in the general perspective viewed as representative examples of use of certain elements of deictic and anaphoric character in marking the sex of a designate (not always identical with the grammatical value of gender in Polish) is proposed in terms of such a game in the texts from the contemporary Polish communicative domain.

Славянская арабскоалфавитная письменность литовских татар

Славянская арабскоалфавитная письменность литовских татар

Author(s): Galina Miškinene / Language(s): Russian Issue: 2/2012

Lithuanian Tatars’ manuscript tradition is a unique cultural phenomenon, which was born in XVI century, when Lithuanian Tartars lost their Turkic language, and it composed an exclusive heritage feature of Grand Duchy of Lithuania. The scientific literature refers to four literary languages recorded in Lithuania Tartars’ manuscripts. These are Chorezm, Chagatai, old Ottoman and Crimean Tatar languages. Over the centuries, Tatars have not lost connection with their compatriots in the East. There is much information about Tartars’ trips to Istanbul, the Balkans and Mecca. However, inaptitude of the liturgical Arabic language and loss of the Turkic language was the reason why Lithuanian Tartars were constrained to change their religious literature into Old Belorussian and later into Polish. In this way, Lithuanian Tartars’ manuscript tradition was born, when Slavic text was written in the Arabic alphabet. One of the peculiarities of these manuscripts is that it is a multilingual monument. In manuscripts, beside the Slavic languages, there are many texts written in Arabic and old Ottoman words. Lithuanian Tartars’ writing tradition, little bit modified and modernized, remained till our days. At the end of XIX century Chamail written in Cyrillic alphabet appeared, whereas Kitab written by printing-machine in the Latin alphabet appeared in 1980s. The oldest Tartars’ manuscripts (kitabs, chamails, tefsirs and tedžvids), written in the old Belorussian and Polish languages in the Arabic alphabet, are dated back in the middle of XVII century. The meaning of the word kitab in the Arabic language is a book. However, kitab refers only to a very large size and scope of a book. Kitabs for Lithuanian Tartars had a great cultural and educational value. It was possible to learn from them about Muslim rituals, traditions, and access to popular hadith – stories about prophet Muhammed and his predecessors. There were also a lot of Eastern stories, folklore, sometimes biblical legends. Chamail (prayer-book) consists of prayer text written in the Arabic and Turkic languages and explanation of the text in old Belorussian and Polish. It is also possible to find knowledge about Muslim chronology, advices how to heal disease by praying, dreams interpretations, lucky and unlucky day predictions. Quran reading rules are stated in tedžvid. Tefsir is the Quran with narration between the lines and comments in Polish. It helps to understand content of the Scripture. All the written forms are equally important and reflect the unique Lithuanian Tartars’ culture and its links with other cultures.
