Author(s): Çimen Günay-Erkol / Language(s): Turkish Issue: 01/2017

Ayfer Tunç, a prominent contemporary writer of Turkish literature, emphasizes the problems of modernism in her novels and presents the struggles of people alienated from the society and the nature in the modernizing world. In Tunç’s literature, themes such as “freedom”, “decision making” and “searching the truth” integrate with several social and political problems related with modernism and grow bigger. Public domain is taken into consideration, around these themes and as an attempt to create a common world. Tunç’s attempts to deal with modernism, requires a re-questioning of concepts such as “agency”, “power”, “public domain”, “evil”, “violence”, similar to that of Hannah Arendt who is one of the foremost thinkers of 20 the century that worked on social politics. In this article, Tunç and Arendt are brought into investigation to discuss the ways they treat the impasses of modernism. Arendt’s famus concept “banality of evil” took its place in history as an important criticism to modernism. Tunç’s 2014 novel Dünya Ağrısı (The World Pain) presents a fictional view of Arendt’s “banality of evil” while the writer’s 2009 novel Bir Deliler Evinin Yalan Yanlış Anlatılan Kısa Tarihi (The Unconfirmed Short History of a House for the Mad) brings the “banality of madness” to the fore. In this article, in the framework of her two novels, impasses of modernism, which Tunç fictionalizes with her unique style are presented and discussed in the light of Arendt’s critical thought.

The use of rhyme and redif in poetry is directly related to poetic harmony. Redif is repeated systematicaly at the end of the lines of a poem, which provides a sense of integrety and harmony. In Classical Turkish Literature, nazîre is identified as a poem which is written to a poet’s poetic work, in the same meter and rhyme by another poet. The use of joint redif is quite common in this poetry. This study consists of four parts. The first part is the introduction section and general information about nazire and harmony will be given. In the second part, the meaning of the word "yavuz" and its use in Turkish poetry will be discussed. In the third chapter, it will be revealed that Ahmed Pasha's poem "Yavuz gözden yavuz dilden" is a redif poem. In section 4 the results will be summarized.

Translation, which is an intercommunal requirement, not only suplplies information flow from the source language into the target language but also serves as a bridge between communities by helping them know the social, political, cultural, cultural and scientific attitudes of each other. There are many terminological definitions of the concept of translation. But its main function is to provide intercultural communication. This intercultural communication is a situation in which the relation between the text and the source text must be handled appropriately. In this study, my aim is to compare and contrast one of the important Turkish writers Orhan Kemal’s novel “El Kızı” and its Georgian "El Kizi" (The Foreigner's Daughter) by İbrahim Goradze and Niko Baramidze. In this context, the translators transference of the author’s literary emotions and thoughts into the target text by taking the cultural and linguistic differences into account will be studied under the guidance of target-oriented translation theory based on vernacularization and alienation strategies shaped bye İbrahim Goradze and Niko Baramidze. When analyzing the meanings of proverbs Turkish Language Association of Proverbs and Idioms Dictionary and Ether Mamuli Turkish-Georgian Dictionary of Idioms are used. In the process of determination whether the level of translation is satisfactory of acceptable, firstly the cover pages, total number of pages and the sections were examined. Secondly, the sentences selected from the source text were compared to the ones in the translated copies in order to determine their closeness and loyalty to the main text.

Author(s): Rezan Karakaş,Erdem Akın,Firdevs Güneş / Language(s): Turkish Issue: 36/2017

In Turkish culture, as the family is considered to be the most important social institution, the woman, who is the basis of the family institution, has a high value in Turkish lifestyle and oral-written culture. In the past, women were at the forefront of all kinds of work in life or all the challenges that need to be solved. In the past centuries, it was demanded from women to be a warrior who uses a sword, rides a horse, in accordance with the requirements of the times. The anticipations in the Turkish social life have led to the creation of works in this direction in literary products. Thus, epics, Dede Korkut stories and folk tales are adorned with an alptype (warrior type) female portraits. This study on the types of female heroes in the tale of Yaralı Mahmut story focuses on the classification and characteristics of women in the work. When the type features were determined, the position, the events and the attitudes of the women were taken as a basis. It is seen that female heroes in the tale of Yaralı Mahmut exhibit a large variety of attitudes and behaviors. In the women of the Titanic story, it is possible to classify as "lover type", "maternal type", "assistant type" and "inhibitory type". It is thought that this classification can be used for all folk tales if supported by new research to be done. In addition, it is expected that the determination of the general characteristics of female heroes will contribute to the discussion of the place and the importance of women in Turkish culture in the context of the public story, which is one of the oral literary products.

Based on an individual, short-short stories, which convey a universal phenomenon to the reader with a simple and striking language, meet the needs of modern times in literature under the influence of speed concept. Language, which is the core material of literature, is the most important means of conveying these short texts to the reader with a world of intensive meaning. Short-short stories reach a multi-layered meaning with proper use of linguistic indicators. The short-short story of Küçük İskender, Yazgının Ölçüsü, tells the loneliness and captivity that the modern day man experiences. In the story that shows at least two contradictions with the fewest words, the encirclement and the enlightenment of the mind, it is conveyed in a universal dimension how the world, in which the individual exists, leads to a dilemma by becoming a labyrinth. Yazgının Ölçüsü, which is about the helplessness of the individual who wants to get rid of his or her captivity, will be discussed within the themes of the "dilemma of the mind" and the "enlightenment of the mind" and the deep-layered linguistic indicators in the story will be analyzed.

ÜLKÜ TAMER’İN ŞİİRLERİNDE YENİ BİR DÜNYANIN OLUŞUMUNDAKİ ROLÜYLE ÇOCUK

Author(s): Okan Özkara / Language(s): Turkish Issue: 36/2017

The most childish poet of the Second New Poetic Movement, Ülkü Tamer generally focuses upon death and escape themes and uses the child image as a means of freedom from the difficulties of life. Children, mostly known as symbols of purity, cleanliness and unspoliedness, have a great role in the creation of an ideal human type in the process of establishing a desired world. Tamer, who often proposes rural life as an ideal setting rather than the urban life in his poetry, deals with how an individual cannot retain his/her own values in the face of society, construct his/her existence on his/her own, and therefore, cannot keep him/herself from falling into despair. Accordingly, in this analytical study, which embarks on Ülkü Tamer’s poetry, markedly formed through child images, the main aim is to critically evaluate the existence domain of children in the establishment of a world reflecting the ideal.

HALİDE EDİB ADIVAR'IN ROMANLARINDA SOSYAL BİR MESELE OLARAK DİN / İSLAM

Author(s): Ramis Karabulut / Language(s): Turkish Issue: 36/2017

In this study, we try to find out that what kind of understanding and approach towards “religion” Halide Edib Adıvar (1882-1964) put forward in her novels. As known, with the Rescript of Gülhane, Turkish society went into the effort of westernization in almost all areas of life and this effort has continued until today. In this process, all attempts for westernization and modernization brought about many changes and discussions, both material and spiritual. The values of the East and the West have caused conflicts in almost every segment of the society, especially among the intellectuals. The core of these conflicts is always known to be a conflict between religion and modernism. Intellectuals who think and write about our westernization process in general, especially with the Rescript of Gülhane, have come up with different approaches and ideas about the need for modernization and the attitude towards religious rules and institutions. It is well known that the main theme of many literary works produced in this process is the “East-West” conflict. As an intellectual and artist Halide Edib Adıvar is among the ones who are involved in various ideological, social, cultural changes and discussions during the Second Constitutional Period and Republican Period. In Halide Edib’s novels, “religion” has an important role in forming and preserving our national identity in the period of westernization and constant change of Turkish society. However, this understanding of religion comes out as a unique interpretation that is close to the “heterodox” understanding with its secular, loving, and reasoning orientations embracing every human being.

Almost everybody who is interested in literature and poetry has an idea in terms of rating a poet as a good poet or a bad poet in his mind. However, the same is not the case according to what criteria this rating is performed. If there are no criteria and concrete references in the mind of the person in terms of a rating or evaluation, the rating or evaluation in question will be unhealthy. This also indicates that the person does not have the necessary consciousness and accumulation of knowledge when evaluating a literary work. Because, if the person regards a literary text as superior to another literary text based on some criteria, his criteria or provision, which is the result of these criteria, even if they are wrong, can provide important data concerning the nature of the text. In this study, the criteria and concrete references that distinguish a literary text from another literary text, or a poet from another poet were put forward specific to the case of the divans of Adli (Adlî) and Ahmet Pasha. The aim, however, was both to demonstrate the role of the method of comparison in achieving the true character of a literary work, and to encourage people to turn to concrete references when two poets or literary works are compared or evaluated. The reason behind the selection of Ahmet Pasha and Adli as poets was to believe that it was necessary to compare Ahmet Pasha – being considered by many researchers to be the best poet of his time and the founder of the classical Turkish poetry, but not much concrete data have been presented to support this – and Adlî – relatively having remained in the shadows – based on concrete data. Accordingly, it was one of the most important goals of this study to suggest criteria to consider when a poem is said to be good or bad. In this direction, the materials that the poets possessed and the way they used these materials constituted the basic action points of this study.

The twentieth century is accepted as one of the periods in which the world entered a different course due to some events and developments. Undoubtedly, the outbreak of World War II; social, political, economic changes and developments in technology and science are effective in that. The artist who deeply feels the depression of this age in which many of the material and spiritual values have lost their meaning, becomes popular with short-short stories that fit the fast consumption needs of human who has to compete against time and by acting individually, aims to shed light on the problems of all mankind. Accordingly, short-short stories, contain the scream of the artist who is trapped in the deterioration and corruption of modern times. The genre has a lot of representatives in world literature, in which the strongest name in Turkish literature is Ferit Edgü. The true success of the artist, who wrote many different types of artifacts, stands out in his short-short stories. In his individual based stories, he goes on an existential line by including universal trails, with solving the meaning of the world and of life. In his short-short story titled “Gece Bekçisi”, he symbolizes any value of the world via the watchman, and the time that flows via the head character who transfers the speech to the reader. He impresses on the displacement of the individual, who has the awareness of his heading for death, with confronting two opposite characters. Author(s): Mustafa Ever / Language(s): Turkish Issue: 34/2017

This study examines Elif Şafak’s Flea Palace and Georges Perec’s Life: A User’s Manual comparatively in terms of form and content. The similarities consist of the fact that both works take place in a ten-flat apartment and narrate the stories of people who live there and both novels present a case of metafiction. The difference is about the authors’ aims. Elif Şafak advances an adversary discourse about the modernization of Turkey after 1950s by placing her novel in a historal and social framework. Perec, on the other hand, constructs a playful text without any historical and sociological reference in keeping with the Oulipo movement.
