Lemiesz tłumacza. Tłumaczenie jako sposób wewnętrznej imigracji

Lemiesz tłumacza. Tłumaczenie jako sposób wewnętrznej imigracji

Author(s): Joanna Roszak / Language(s): Polish Issue: 23/2014

The theme of the article is translation as a mode of internal immigration. Paul Celan, who chose German as the language of his work, (it was the language of his mother and of murderers), found a sanctuary also as translator. In translator’s profession, he found ways of distilling the German language, which never ceased to be his “internal landscape” in spite of the wound inflicted to the language by Nazism. Most of the discussion focuses on Celan’s motivations when he translated Osip Mandelstam’s poetry.

„Ludzkie owady” i człowiek – o dalekiej bliskości życia w niedoli i wspaniałości

„Ludzkie owady” i człowiek – o dalekiej bliskości życia w niedoli i wspaniałości

Author(s): Ireneusz Gielata / Language(s): Polish Issue: 2/2016

The author analyzes E.T.A. Hoffmann’s short story “Master Flea”, focusing mainly on the scene of the telescope duel between two biologists: Jan Swammerdam and Anton Leeuwenhoek. This scene triggers reflection on discovering the closeness between humans and insects – a closeness that became possible once man started to question the possibility of being different from animals. Even though Swammerdam equated human beings with insects, he never overcame the limitations of anatomic perception. It was only the generation of Romantics that discovered the similarity of fate between humans and insects – a similarity, as Maurice Maeterlinck called it, of “misery and greatness”. The author traces the evolution in the ways of perceiving insects and writing about them; an evolution which was initiated by Montaigne’s essay “Apology for Raymond Sebond” and later developed by E.T.A. Hoffmann, Henry David Thoreau and Maurice Maeterlinck.

Mit o majčinstvu u svijetu bez majke: Struktura obitelji u njemačkoj građanskoj tragediji druge polovice 18. stoljeća

Author(s): Eldi Grubišić Pulišelić,Sandina Herić / Language(s): Bosnian Issue: 12/2017

The German Bourgeois tragedies of the second half of the 18th century reflect the image of a patriarchal structured family, where a woman as a mother is not only marginalized. Sometimes, she completely dissapears. In this paper, the structure of the family has been analysed with special emphasis on the construction of the mother’s character in three paradigmatic works, Lessing’s tragedy “Emilia Galotti”, Schiller’s “Kabale und Liebe” and Wagner’s “Die Kindermörderin”. While the father is the patron of family honor and the bearer of bourgeois values, the mother is shown as a naughty and naive woman who does not recognize the danger that comes from the aristocratic world. She therefore does not deserve a mythical role and remains out of the circle of self – sacrifice and morality. The myth of motherhood is paradoxically realized in a world without mothers: the utopian bourgeois world of sentiment disappears in the cruel tyranny of patriarchy. As the daughter has to die to preserve her life as her father’s permanent property, the mother must disappear from the drama precisely because she symbolizes lost innocence and the lack of moral integrity.

Dişa Vurumcu Bir Eleştiri Örneği: Der Untertan

Dişa Vurumcu Bir Eleştiri Örneği: Der Untertan

Author(s): Betül Yalçınkaya Akçit / Language(s): Turkish Issue: 93/2018

Expressionism, which emerged in the early 20th century, has strongly opposed the formation of militarism, capitalism, mechanization and industrialization, which cause human alienation. The writers of this period also criticized in their works the social problems and them who were responsible. Heinrich Mann is also one of the writers who have produced expressionist works. It is known that Mann criticized the German Empire in his trio of Die Armen (The Poor), Der Kopf (The Chief) and Der Untertan (The Loyal Subject). In Der Untertan, which is subject to this study, the period of Kaiser Wilhelm II was handled and the negative aspects of the period and the way of administration were ironically criticized through the main character of the work. The Heβling character, who admired Kaiser Wilhelm II and imitated him, turned in time to a Wilhelm II parodic. Thus Kaiser Wilhelm’s II attitude was handled widely in the work as an authoritarian and almost dictator. In the study, firstly Expressionism and the details of the period of Kaiser Wilhelm II were explained. After that, it’s shown with examples from the work how Mann criticized Kaiser Wilhelm II through his main character and in which ways the main character was trying to imitate himself Kaiser Wilhelm II.

Dzieci umarłych Elfriede Jelinek w pułapce marketingu Poznawcze i pragmatyczne aspekty przekładu

Author(s): Anna Majkiewicz / Language(s): English Issue: 2/2019

This article attempts to answer the question: why the Polish translation of a novel by Elfriede Jelinek The Children of the Dead (Die Kinder der Toten) did not stir any debate in the circles of literary criticism in Poland. While analysing the actions carried out as a part of the W.A.B.’s (a Warsaw-based publishing house) strategy to advance the publication process and to popularize Jelinek’s oeuvre, we may notice that they actually confirm the publisher’s endeavour to balance economic and symbolic capital (Bourdieu). It allows us to reconstruct the “marketing” aims of the translation in question. Yet both the cognitive and pragmatic facet of the Austrian Nobel Laureate’s Polish translation remain to be reconstructed by the readers.

Od Valerie do Fausta i Wolnego strzelca: kilka uwag o intertekstualnej strategii I części Dziadów

Od Valerie do Fausta i Wolnego strzelca: kilka uwag o intertekstualnej strategii I części Dziadów

Author(s): Jerzy Fiećko / Language(s): Polish Issue: 30/2018

The author analyses intertextual relations in the first and final section of part of “Forefathers’ Eve” (Dziady), and treats them as an element of Mickiewicz’s strategy of anchoring his own work in the system of dialogue with renowned Western cultural works of the time. This dialogue takes the form of a polemic against the sentimental French models akin to de Krüdener’s “Valerie” and the Sturm und Drang movement, which was open to issues of characterisation and early German romanticism. In the first part of the book, which focuses on an analysis of the Maiden’s monologue, the author discerns a mechanism of references to Barbara Julianna de Krüdener’s novel “Valerie” and “The Sorrows of Young Werther”, with which the baroness engaged in an open dispute.

»Lažan privid totaliteta nestaje«: Proces Orsona Wellesa i Benjaminova alegorijska slika

Author(s): Julian Koch / Language(s): Croatian Issue: 1-2/2019

Author(s): Branka B. Ognjanović / Language(s): Serbian Issue: 15/2017

This paper provides an insight into constituting an investigation and the nature of its relation with the reality in Friedrich Dürrenmatt’s novella The Assignment. It examines the way in which character F. creates the reality by conducting an investigation – at first by searching for the truth by means of a biographic method, by interpreting the diaries, photographs, and notes of Tina von Lambert, and then by moving through staged realities, which raises the issue of who is really conducting the investigation: character F. or an instance of power. It points to concerns with regard to the border between the truth and fiction and to various aspects of cognition embodied in Polyphemus, a cameraman and a logician, and his assistant, Achilles, as well as to the possibility of findings of the investigation being manipulated depending on the point of view. Thus, an important role in the novella is given to surveillance as a method of monitoring, controlling, and creating the reality, with the author relying on Foucalt’s theory of power and surveillance as the starting point of her research.

Од романтизма ка реализму: Хебелова приповетка „Сан“

Author(s): Milica B. Pasula,Julijana Beli-Genc / Language(s): Serbian Issue: 13/2016

Despite the numerous periodisation controversies, dilemmas and problems, Friedrich Hebbel’s drama oeuvre is commonly considered as the most significant testimony of poor German poetic realism. However, his fiction creativity has been neglected for decades in the interpretative literature as well as in other research within the science of literature. The reasons for this may be found in the fact that Hebbel’s fiction was not sufficiently current from the aspects of contents and genre. The short story ‘Dream’ represents an example of the author’s transitional phase between his romantic and realistic manner of thinking and writing. The aim of the paper is to point to the characteristics of these two literary epochs on the example of Hebbel’s short story, as well as the analysis of the most significant characteristics of this literary work, which partly relativises the previous science of literature attitude towards Hebbel’s short stories.

Grenzen der Apokalypse. Katastrophische Visionen bei Krzysztof Varga und Hannes Stein

Author(s): Jolanta Pacyniak / Language(s): German Issue: XXI/2019

The aim of this article is to analyze two novels, namely Nagrobek z lastryko(A Terrazzo Tomb) by Krzysztof Varga and Der Komet (The Comet). Despite the differ-ences that occur between the two novels (a dystopian version of the future in the former, and an alternative history in the latter), the predicted end of the world does not take place, while the apocalypse blurs. Equally resistant to change is also the existing societal structure as the catastrophe does not bring a new hierarchy. Both novels use the images of WWII as the pattern to create the literary vision of a total disaster.

Funkcionalni pristup prevođenju imena u dečijim knjigama Mihaela Endea

Funkcionalni pristup prevođenju imena u dečijim knjigama Mihaela Endea

Author(s): Nikolina N. Zobenica / Language(s): Serbian Issue: 12/2015

Michael Ende (1929–1994) is one of the most renowned German authors of 20th century children’s literature. As a representative of fantastic literature, Ende frequently plays with words when naming his characters, various objects and places, which is a challenge for translators of his works. Ende’s books translated into Serbian so far are the cult titles The Neverending Story and Momo, then adventures of an unusual boy Jim, Jim Button and Luke the Engine Driver and Jim Button and the Wild 13, a book on magic The Night of Wishes; or, The Satanarchaeolidealcohellish Notion Potion and the collection of short stories The School of Magic. When translating names in these books, translators often had to be creative and to make a choice of a certain approach in the translation process. The aim of this paper is to analyse the name translations from the aspect of the functional approach, as elaborated by Hans-Joseph Vermeer and Katharina Reiß, a concept known as skopos theory. According to the theory, the translation process purpose (intentionality) and goal (finality) of a text are of key importance, which can, but does not have to be identical in the original and the translation, as is decided by a number of external factors. Although the function and purpose of children’s literature are complex, they do not change when translated into a foreign language.

Migrationserf ahrungen in Saša Stanišićs Roman Wie der Soldat das Grammofon repariert

Author(s): Maren Kaiser / Language(s): German Issue: 1-2/2010

Stanišić’s novel Wie der Soldat das Grammofon repariert (How the Soldier Repairs a Gramophone) is much more than a migration story. This essay intends to show that migration is not the writer’s only topic, and also that the protagonist’s migration experience is reflected in the novel’s form and narrative techniques as well. Analyzing different aspects of the novel, the article illustrates how profoundly the protagonist’s life is shown in the text. It also discusses the multiperspectivity of Stanisic’s text, as well as the diversity of genres that are intertwined. With the war in Bosnia and political change as background, a complex picture is drawn of people and life in Bosnia. Stanišić’s complex novel demonstrates that the national origin of an author should not be used as a basis for judgment of his/her literary work.

Идеалистичка и предмартовска рецепција Гетеовог Фауста у 19. веку

Author(s): Miloš M. Jovanović / Language(s): Serbian Issue: 20/2019

This paper considers the idealistic and the reception of the Vormärz of Goethe’s Faust in the first and partly the second half of the 19th century in Germany. The main methods of this work are the hermeneutical and the phenomenological. The purpose of the work is to show to which extent the interpretations of Goethe’s Faust and the understanding of the art of literature stand in the shadow of the hermeneutical paradigm of the idealistic and the Vormärz reception of the first half of the 19th century.

Prevođenje naslova i međunaslova u romanu „Limeni doboš“ Gintera Grasa

Author(s): Nikolina N. Zobenica / Language(s): Serbian Issue: 7/2013

By means of a critical analysis of translation of chapter titles and subtitles in the novel The Tin Drum by Gunter Grass, the author raises the issues of translating poetic titles, with a view to pointing to the necessity of one having a solid command of the language, the piece itself, its writer, as well as its overall context in terms of literary history, literary theory, and culture, in order to deliver an adequate result.

La monarchie réorchestrée: L’Hermine souillée de Gregor von Rezzori et la réécriture du mythe de Habsbourg

Author(s): Cristina Spinei / Language(s): French Issue: 1/2020

The present study analyzes, on the basis of a novel written by Gregor von Rezzori (1914–1998) and entitled Ein Hermelin in Tschernopol (1958)—translated into English first as The Hussar, and then as An Ermine in Czernopol—the Habsburg myth of Austrian literature in the context of the cultural-ideological paradigm of Central Europe (a multiethnic, multilingual, and multi-confessional area). Rezzori fractures and reshapes the imperial myth, alternating between gravitas, irony, and the burlesque.

Poslijeratna generacija na tragu prošlosti i obiteljskog identiteta u romanima Der letzte große Trost i Flugschnee

Author(s): Marijana Jeleč,Anđela Matanović / Language(s): English,Croatian Issue: 8-9/2020

Contemporary literature from the German speaking area opens the door in all directions, monitors all changes in society and the trends of globalization, but equally opens up space for the past. It continues to outline the social and political circumstances before and after World War II that have affected the human microcosm. In the so called ”generation novel” the destiny of the family is inevitably correlated with the historical and social events of the 20th century, so contemporary literature gains the function of collective memory and that is the hypothesis. The basis of the research is to determine the ways and motives of memory, the reasons and the way narrators reconstruct the past and build a family identity. The research is conducted within the theoretical setting of Maurice Halbwachs, Pierre Nora, Aleida Assmann, and the research corpus are two novels of contemporary Austrian literature: Der Letzte große Trost (2016) by Stefan Slupetzky and Flugschnee (2017) by Birgit Müller-Wieland. Determining the features of this popular genre, the way and perspective of family and society representation in it, and the enlightenment of 20th-century political and social events that reflected on the destiny and the literary representation of the family are also part of this research.

Romantic Afterlives: Heinrich Heine’s “Deutschland. Ein Wintermärchen” in Yiddish Translations

Author(s): Magdalena Sitarz / Language(s): English Issue: 17/2019

This paper presents the reception of Heinrich Heine’s “Deutschland. Ein Wintermärchen” in Yiddish translation. For many of his younger colleagues he was “der grester liriker fun 19tn jorhundert, der sharfster humorist und biterster satiriker in der daytsher literatur” [the greatest poet of the 19th century, the sharpest humorist and bitterest satirist in the German literature]. My aim is to show on the example of Deutschland. Ein Wintermärchen [Germany. A Winter’s Tale] (1844) how Heine’s subversive drawing on Romantic ideas and language is rendered into Yiddish in the first half of the 20th century by Moyshe-Leyb Halpern and Moyshe Khashtshevatsky.
