Социалнопедагогическа подкрепа на момичета и жени с хомосексуална ориентация

Социалнопедагогическа подкрепа на момичета и жени с хомосексуална ориентация

Author(s): Yana Dimitrova / Language(s): Bulgarian Issue: 1/2016

The present paper focuses on tracing the origins of the issue of “women’s homosexuality” as a phenomenon from the perspective of social pedagogy. It aims at developing effective models of supporting strategies for women with homosexual orientation and their families. These models would enable the adequate social inclusion of such women and would facilitate overcoming of the negative public attitudes towards them.

On the changes in the Korean family institution in the past century

On the changes in the Korean family institution in the past century

Author(s): Elena Buja / Language(s): English Issue: 2/2022

This small-scale study aims to trace the changes that have occurred in the Korean family institution in a time span of about one hundred years, more specifically, since the beginning of the 20th century, when Korea opened its borders to foreigners, until the present, as well as to identify the causes that have led to these changes. The theoretical framework I will employ is thematic analysis, defined by Berelson (1952, 18) as “a research technique for the objective, systematic, and quantitative description of the manifest content of communication”. The data subjected to analysis come from a number of novels authored by Korean and Korean-American writers, such as H. Lee (1997) Still Life with Rice, S. Park (2011) This Burns My Heart, and NJ. Cho (2018) Kim Jiyoung, Born 1982, to mention just a few. The reason behind opting for literature as a source of information is that I consider it to be a cultural product of particular socio-cultural circumstances inextricably linked to history. The fragments from the novels have been analyzed in terms of some of the identified themes, such as the status roles created by marriage in the Korean culture, the involvement of men in the house chores and child-rearing, in-laws’ attitudes towards their daughters-in-law, and the chances of married women to keep their jobs, divorce, to mention just a few. The primary data is supplemented with information coming from the Korean society trend survey, conducted by Statistics Korea. The findings of the analysis will reveal a slow, though obvious change in the family institution, which could be attributed to factors such as the Western influence, the spread of Christianity in the peninsula, as well as the massive industrial, technological, and economic development of Korea.

Effects of the COVID-19 Pandemic on Intergroups Inequalities: The Case of Women

Author(s): Deniz Eniç / Language(s): English Issue: 4/2022

The ongoing COVID-19 pandemic has crucial implications for intergroup inequalities. The main aims of the current study are to examine how the COVID-19 affects inequalities between women and men, understand the causes of increasing gender-based inequalities during pandemic, and offer practical solutions on how these inequalities can be reduced. The results of studies from different countries demonstrated that genderbased inequalities that existed before the pandemic deepened with the COVID-19. After the COVID-19, there has been a serious rise in the level of physical, psychological and economic violence that women are exposed to, the labor they spend on housework and caring has increased dramatically, and the problems they face in business life ascended. Understanding why gender-based inequalities have increased during the COVID-19 is one of the influential steps to achieve gender equality. When the reasons are examined, it has been determined that many factors, including the policies implemented in the struggle against the pandemic and gender roles, play critical roles in this rise. Finally, in order to diminish gender-based inequalities, short and long-term solutions are presented such as carrying out gender-based awareness education, adequate representations of women in decision-making processes, developing gender-sensitive policies, strengthening the mechanisms that support women.

Жената-чудовище като естетически феномен във видеоигрите

Author(s): Severina Stankeva / Language(s): Bulgarian Issue: 1/2023

The paper seeks to deconstruct the image of the monstrous-feminine in video games insofar as it sees in it a fitting entry to the root of the problem of femininity in general. The monstrous is seen as a primary cultural category, marking that which stands on the edge of the hermeneutic circle and thus questioning its contents; the grotesque as a formal-aesthetic hallmark of the concrete personifications of monstrosity; and abjection as their unconscious constitutive motif. Video games, as a medium with an active agent rather than a passive spectator, are analyzed in terms of their extraordinary technical capabilities that make possible the literal and naïve playing out of the battle around the construction of subjectivity (matricide). The conclusions of the text function as a theoretical framework for constructing a typology of the monstrous-feminine and the specific connotative landscapes of its different types.

Gender equality plans are an eligibility criterion in research funding under Horizon Europe from 2022. The article analyzes the ideas of gender equality in a European and national context and the applicable terminology. Discussions on indicators of gender equality in higher education, national specifics and approaches to their implementation are presented. The aim of the article is to systematize the issues, methodological problems and solutions in the development of GEPs, examining the theoretical foundations, regulation, statistics and good practices in Europe and Bulgaria. The topic is gaining popularity in our country and so far the emphasis has been on building organizational capacity and culture, instead of engaging with specific indicators of gender equality.

The Transition of Son Preference: Evidence from Southeast Asian Countries

The Transition of Son Preference: Evidence from Southeast Asian Countries

Author(s): Nahid Tavassoli / Language(s): English Issue: 1/2021

This paper explores the existence of son preference and gender-based fertility behavior among Southeast Asian mothers. Using census data of ten countries (Cambodia, China, India, Indonesia, Malaysia, Myanmar, Nepal, Philippines, Thailand, and Vietnam) over the years 1970-2014 and a sample of over 18 million observation, I show that having a first-born girl is associated with 0.16 more children in the household, equivalent to 7.2 percent rise from the mean. The marginal effects are quite robust across various specifications and subsamples. The effects are larger for countries with lower human development index and individuals with lower education. A birth cohort analysis show that the effects are significantly smaller for later cohorts implying that son preference fertility behavior has diminished over time.

Impact of rape-myths on judiciary proceedings. A lack of acknowledgement in the European Court of Human Rights case-law

Impact of rape-myths on judiciary proceedings. A lack of acknowledgement in the European Court of Human Rights case-law

Author(s): Karolina Prażmowska-Marcinowska / Language(s): English Issue: 3/2022

Rape myths can be defined as prejudicial, stereotyped or false beliefs about rape, rape victims, and rapists, and they include common opinions whereby women mean “yes” when they say “no”; women provoke rape; if a woman does not want to be raped, she will just fight back at any cost. These pervasive social attitudes can have a detrimental effect on victims of sexual violence, especially when employed by authorities during official proceedings. As such, this article aims at analyzing to what extent rape myths affect the perception of victims of sexual violence during the official proceedings on the example of the case-law of the European Court of Human Rights (ECHR). Thus the first part explains the notion of rape myths, while the second part provides an analysis of the jurisprudence of the ECHR. Lastly, the final part suggests new approach to cases concerning sexual violence.

ERFAHRUNGSBERICHT: PROJEKT- GESCHICHTSBILDER IN BULGARIEN UND ÖSTERREICH ZUM THEMA GESCHICHTSUNTERRICHT IN DER SCHULE

Author(s): Mihaela Hristova,Yuliana Schagan / Language(s): German Issue: 1/2022

At the beginning of the semester, in the Writing Exercises II seminar, we were presented with a project on the main topic of historical images, where a cultural and language exchange with students from Austria was also planned. This is where the first question came up: what is meant by images of history. When we dealt with it and clarified the term, the second question came up, what kind of topic should we choose. At first we wanted to take a topic related to the role of women during that time because it was linked to feminism, but that was already unavailable and so we thought about what else would have been interesting for us and that's how it came about the history lesson in school. We chose the topic because we would also like to work in schools. Therefore, everything related to school teaching is useful, because you can find something new for teaching through research and then put it into practice. In addition, we were able to get a new overview from the point of view of the Austrian students and thus also gain new knowledge.

The movement of Romanian women from the Middle Ages to the end of the WWII

The movement of Romanian women from the Middle Ages to the end of the WWII

Author(s): Ovidiana Bulumac / Language(s): English Issue: 2/2021

The present paper addresses in a schematic manner the image of Romanian women, a subject not well developed in the sociological literature. The text indicates references to the condition of women starting from the Middle Ages, continuing with early modernity time frame, following the interwar period, and ending with the communist oppression installment. This is, in fact, the first fragment of a wider study, designed in three main parts. The second one is based on research centered upon the Scânteia newspaper, the official trumpet of the communist power, documenting all the published references related to women between September 1944 and February 1954 (almost 30,000 pages), a study that will be published in 2022 in London. The third part, still under development, represents a reality check: the real herstory, that took place in the communist induced state of terror, a timeframe which was considered to be the harshest repressive regime that the country endured until the Revolution of December 1989.

THE ELUSIVE RELATIONSHIP OF STATE POWER AND SOCIETAL PEACE: REFLECTIONS ON THE CASE OF KOSOVO

THE ELUSIVE RELATIONSHIP OF STATE POWER AND SOCIETAL PEACE: REFLECTIONS ON THE CASE OF KOSOVO

Author(s): Albana Cerkrezi,Reina Zelenaj Shehi,Festina Kabashi / Language(s): English Issue: 2/2022

Twenty years ago, NATO’s intervention against the Federal Republic of Yugoslavia (FRY), taking place without the approval of the UN Security Council (UNSC), challenged the sovereignty and non-interference norms the UN had perceived as international peace and order, until that moment. While the military action served to question existing principles, it simultaneously examined the effectiveness of non-authorization. Moreover, the Kosovo case stimulated one of the most important UN reforms that transformed the concept of sovereignty from right to responsibility. Conceptually, the Responsibility to Protect (R2P) has largely advanced since then. The transformation shifted the attention from political to sociological peace making society, gender and victims of conflict at the focus of peacebuilding and peace sustaining processes. The juxtaposition of state and societal peace continues in post-conflict Kosovo with both approaches being intermingled: the security debate covers attempts for a peace-building agenda, whereas the formation of a national army is pursued.

Labour Relations and Human Resources: Students’ Perceptions of Their Training in Digital Competences

Labour Relations and Human Resources: Students’ Perceptions of Their Training in Digital Competences

Author(s): Triana Arias Abelaira,Belén Mozo Redondo / Language(s): English Issue: 2/2022

Nowadays, the acquisition of a high level of digital competence has become a real need for professional development in any field. Future graduates in Labour Relations and Human Resources should achieve an advanced level of this skill. The main aim of this research is to determine the level of acquisition of digital competence in Labour Relations and Human Resources students. The second purpose is to check whether there is a link between gender and digital competence achievement. This paper is based on the application of a questionnaire on digital competences which is organized around 5 aspects, and mainly based on the basis of Likert-type scale questions. The data collected belong to 26 undergraduates studying at the third year of Degree in Labour Relations and Human Resources at the University of Extremadura. The results obtained show that a large majority of students (65.4%) have an advanced level of digital competence, nevertheless, it would be advisable for the rest to achieve the same level before they graduate and exercise their profession. The second important conclusion is that the level of acquisition of digital competence is not conditioned by gender aspects.

From Margaret Noble to Sister Nivedita: Mapping a Colonial Woman’s Journey to India in Search of a ‘Home’

Author(s): Ritushree Sengupta,Kumar Sankar Bhattacharya,Devika Sangwan / Language(s): English Issue: 11/2022

While stories of travels from Britain to India during the colonial times were replete with stereotypes, the journey of an Irish Lady, Margaret Noble (1867–1911) and her subsequent transformation into Sister Nivedita (the one dedicated to the cause) was unique in many senses. Attracted by her Guru (Spiritual Master) she came to Calcutta, India on her spiritual quest in 1898, where she immersed herself in the local culture, learned the language, and significantly contributed to women’s progress. Her involvement with local intelligentsia and nationalism highlighted the Indian values, talents and erudition to the outside world. Her journey showcased her spirit that could transcend the rigid European orthodoxy for White women in a colonized land and placed her as one of the leading architects of modern India. Earlier studies have not recognised Nivedita as a social reformer. Most importantly, works on her seldom refer to her struggle and subsequent triumph over limitations imposed on her in terms of racial othering, geographical positionality and gendered subjectivity. This paper addresses her struggle and celebrates her successful navigation in transcending the limitations and restrictions of both her Irish culture and the Indian culture and highlights her significant contributions towards human race at large.

Reflections of Emotions on Daily Life: Functionality of Positive Emotions

Author(s): Aslı Kartol / Language(s): English Issue: 3/2023

People by nature tend to experience more positive emotions and less negative emotions. For centuries, philosophers have stated that happiness is the ultimate source of human motivation. Therefore, many individuals think that the more positive emotions they experience, the happier they will be, and they strive for it. Many different situations such as socioeconomic level, educational status, gender, culture affect the level of happiness of individuals, but the desire to be happy is present in every segment. The endless pursuit of happiness can often lead to unrealistic expectations and some psychological problems in the face of life events. The increase in positive emotions can open up more space for the person to learn, think and develop together with happiness. However, positive emotions do not consist of happiness, but there are also different emotions that contribute to happiness and nourish the person. The positive emotions experienced by the person in daily life are important in terms of better performance and healthier relationships. In this respect, when we look at the literature on this subject, it has been seen that there is a gap in the studies conducted in Turkey. Emotions are important determinants of behavior. Any risky behavior that may arise can be harmful to both the individual and the society. Emotion regulation also affects behavior positively. For this purpose, the aim of this study is to deal with positive emotions, which have not been discussed before, in a theoretical dimension, to adapt these emotions to daily life, to increase the resources that the person has and to convey their reflections on the lifestyle.

FLAPPER ON THE ROMANIAN AND AMERICAN INTERWAR SCENE

FLAPPER ON THE ROMANIAN AND AMERICAN INTERWAR SCENE

Author(s): Andreea Dinu / Language(s): Romanian Issue: 16/2019

This paper aims to present the flapper, starting with the definitions of the term and continuing with the influence of the New Woman on feminism in Romania and The United States of America during interwar period. Emerged in a time of great change, the new type of woman was like a tidal wave for the conservatory society. The one who once was admired for her obedience to males, for her housekeeping or motherhood skills was ready to fight for her new roles into public sphere. Surrounded by rhythms of jazz and cigarette smoke, the bob haired flapper wore minimal clothing; a lot of make up, red lips and nails was able to win the fight against conservatism and to set her as a symbol of one of the most intense time periods.

ILO Convention No. 190 concerning the Elimination of Violence and Harassment in the World of Work and Recommendation No. 206

Author(s): Eva Kocher / Language(s): English Issue: 21/2023

Violence and harassment are present in the world of work in the most diverse forms. The ILO Violence and Harassment Convention 2019 should therefore be of great importance for labour law practice. It was adopted on 21 June 2019, together with the non-binding Recommendation for Implementation (No. 206), on the occasion of the centenary of the ILO. As the Convention falls partly within the competence of the European Union, with the EU not being able to ratify the Convention itself, the European Commission has invited the member states to ratify the Convention by the end of 2022. The German Federal Government is currently planning ratification. In the following, I give an overview of the Convention and, using German law as an example, discuss how it could be implemented in a legal system shaped by EU law.
