Город Измаил в конце XVI – начале XIX вв.

Author(s): Andrew V. Krasnozhon,Mehmed Tutuncu / Language(s): Russian Issue: 1/2020

The article summarizes the research of written, cartographic and epigraphic sources on the history of the city of Izmail and its fortification, which relate to the period from the end of the 16th to the beginning of the 19th centuries. The city of Izmail arose on the left bank of the Danube at a long-standing crossing called Ismail-hechidi, according to the decree of Sultan Ottoman Empire, Murad III. The decree (firman) provided for the transfer of these lands into the possession of the head of his harem, Khabeshi Mehmed-aga. This is probably why the founded city was originally called Mehmedabad (the city of Mehmed) - in honor of its founder. However, this name did not become popular in the future, since Mehmet-aga soon died. Probably, the name “Izmail” was associated with the original name of the crossing, which, in turn, was associated with the name of a certain “saint”, Ismail Baba, buried here. The remains of the turbe of this local revered man and the abode of dervishes (tekke) next to him remained in Izmail until the end of the XVIII century. In the very first years, a stone castle with a garrison of 36 people, a large hammam, a marina and shipyards, a stone khan, a stone dome mosque and other major buildings that became the basis of the infrastructure of the young city appeared in Izmail. Eventually in 1591, Izmail was transferred to the ownership of waqf, and his tax revenues began to go in favor of Islamic shrines in Mecca, Medina and Jerusalem. In the entire history of the city, it experienced at least six major construction periods associated with fortifications.

O spiţă genealogică a “curgătorilor” din Gavrilaş Hâra şi Dumitru Buhuş

Author(s): Petronel Zahariuc / Language(s): Romanian Issue: 1-2/2018

In “Achiziții Noi [New Achievements]” collection at the National Archives of Romania, two genealogical threads of Hâra and Buhuș families are preserved. They are dated in the 16th -18th centuries and make a synthesis of the history of these Moldavian families, related among them and with other main families, such as Movilă, Stroici, Ureche. These threads provide new information of some members of these families, since a part of the documents in use, when they were issued in 1814, is lost

Опыт изучения чайной культуры российскими миссионерами в Пекине в XIX в.

Опыт изучения чайной культуры российскими миссионерами в Пекине в XIX в.

Author(s): Sofiya Silakova-Makarova / Language(s): Russian Issue: 1/2023

This article is devoted to the study and perception of tea and the tea culture of China by Russian missionaries and students of the Orthodox Spiritual Mission, who served in Beijing in the 19th century. Even in the large-scale works of Soviet and Russian orientalists’ little attention is paid to the issue of personal perception of the achievements of Chinese culture by missionaries. The author studied materials, including travel records, ethnographic notes and medical works of Russian missionaries of the 19th century: some of the above were published during the lifetime of the researchers, while some settled in the archives of Kazan, St. Petersburg and Moscow. The study found that tea culture at the beginning of the 19th century has not yet taken root in the Russian Empire, and the question of the benefits of drinking tea as a remedy and as an everyday drink remained controversial both among doctors and orientalist missionaries. This thesis is also confirmed by the personal records of missionaries, doctors and students at the Beijing Spiritual Mission. How-ever, works of a later time include a detailed study of tea culture in different regions of China, and there are also references to the tea trade in Russia and abroad, which confirms the thesis about the initial lack of data on tea and tea culture in China. Russian researchers, as well as the fact that half a century later, tea culture has become stronger not only in China, but also abroad, including in the Russian Empire.

Author(s): Maria Dorina Pașca / Language(s): Romanian Issue: 36/2024

As a landmark in village life, the bench at the gate, found even today in Romanian rural settlements, occupies an important place in interpersonal/interpersonal communication, registering a certain conduct, attitude and communicative behavior in full connection with the purpose, cause and effect of the act of communication itself, being the "great-grandmother" of today's technology. Starting from: its role, place, construction, occupants and migration, the gate bench still remains the "keystone" of rural communication and today having its well-defined personality in relation to: the house, the gate, the fence and the village street.

BRIEF CONSIDERATIONS OF THE JOURNALISTIC ACTIVITY OF PASHOPTIST HISTORIANS AND WRITERS FROM THE ROMANIAN SPACE (I)

BRIEF CONSIDERATIONS OF THE JOURNALISTIC ACTIVITY OF PASHOPTIST HISTORIANS AND WRITERS FROM THE ROMANIAN SPACE (I)

Author(s): Iulia Vaisărhofer / Language(s): Spanish Issue: 36/2024

From the Pashoptist perspective, the main problem of Romanian historians up to the middle of the 19th century was represented by the lack of interest in the search for primary sources, gathering as many documents as possible that had to be exploited and published in order to create a historiographical picture that would fill in the major gaps in national history and cultivate Romanian's interest in the past. Starting from these things, in the lines of this work we have proposed to follow in general lines the work done by the Romanian historians of the Pashoptist period from a journalistic point of view and to highlight its importance in understanding the period we are referring to.

Author(s): Mihaela Sandu (Hură) / Language(s): Romanian Issue: 36/2024

The scientific work of Ovidiu Bîrlea is that of a complex researcher, with an impressive cultural horizon and with very rigorous research methods. First and foremost a folklorist, he always uses knowledge and working tools specific to other sciences – ethnology, ethnography, anthropology, history, literary criticism, linguistics, geography, musicology, choreography. With their help, he carries out the most extensive, detailed and profound analysis of Romanian folklore thanks to which our folklore managed, at the end of the 20th century, to synchronize with the European one. This achievement ensures its author an essential role in the evolution of Romanian research on popular creation.

THE EFFECTS OF THE PHANARIOT ERA ON THE ROMANIAN PEOPLE

THE EFFECTS OF THE PHANARIOT ERA ON THE ROMANIAN PEOPLE

Author(s): Marinel Pădure / Language(s): Romanian Issue: 36/2024

The Phanariote era represents a crucial moment in the evolution of the Romanian people and in shaping its national identity. This period was characterized by the rule of the Greek Phanariot boyars in the Romanian Principalities and Moldova, having a significant impact on the political, economic and cultural evolution of the Romanians. Its historical importance is reflected in the transformations produced in the social structure and collective mentality, as well as in its contribution to the consolidation of Romanian national consciousness. The Phanariots, members of some Greek aristocratic families, dominated the politics of the Romanian principalities for about three centuries, bringing with them influences from Ottoman culture and politics. The foundation of the Fanario dynasty must be understood in the context of geopolitical changes in Eastern Europe, and the relations of Messrs. Brâncoveanu and Dimitrie Cantemir with the military events of the 18th century played an essential role in establishing this dominance. The impact of the Phanariote era on the development of the Romanian people was profound. The social and economic transformations under Phanariot rule accentuated social divisions and increased poverty among the population. However, this period also contributed to the formation of the Romanians' national consciousness, by promoting the local language and culture in a context of oppression and centralization of power. Characterized by excessive fiscal policies and the resistance of local boyars to reforms, the Phanariot era also represented a period of attempts at modernization and administrative reform. Despite the negative effects, such as the exploitation of the population and the conservatism of the local elites, some legislative initiatives introduced modern elements in the legal and administrative fields, contributing to a dialogue with the European context of the time. The Phanariote era marked a period of change and struggle for independence and national identity of the Romanian people. The revolts and subsequent political events led to the end of the Phanariot rule and the return to autochthonous rulers, marking a new chapter in Romanian history.

THE TRANSYLVANIAN VILLAGE BETWEEN TRADITION AND MODERNITY. THE TRANSFORMATION OF THE CULTURAL LANDSCAPE OF CHITID

THE TRANSYLVANIAN VILLAGE BETWEEN TRADITION AND MODERNITY. THE TRANSFORMATION OF THE CULTURAL LANDSCAPE OF CHITID

Author(s): Paul-Cristian Albu / Language(s): French Issue: 36/2024

The purpose of the paper is to offer a panoramic view of the loss of immaterial patrimony in the village of Chitid, Hunedoara County, Romania. I am interested in discussing how the loss can be reflected in the contemporary world and how this loss can be conjugated with emigration to other important places. I am also interested in observing how I can manage to discuss the idea of migration and industrialization that appeared after the Second World War. This migration has an important impact on this rural landscape, because it reflects how the mentalities change in eighty years. Also, it is essential to note how this change can be reflected in our days and how the world changed during the Communist and Post-Communist era. In order to offer a consistent view of the concept aforementioned, I will consider using the technique of close reading diverse monographic books, focusing on how to express the idea of conversion from a patriarchal world to a modern world. The creative use of language will be regarded as a means to make visible the new paradigm in which Romanian folklore can be understood and loved in contemporaneity.

New Sources from the Koháry-Coburg Family’s Archive – Additions to Péter Koháry’s Biography

New Sources from the Koháry-Coburg Family’s Archive – Additions to Péter Koháry’s Biography

Author(s): Gellért Ernő Marton / Language(s): English Issue: 1/2023

The goal of this paper is to present some new sources as part of a greater project, the collecting of Baron Péter Koháry’s correspondence and other sources of his life, diplomatic as well as military administrative role, and activity. Koháry (1564–1632) was the vice-captain of Érsekújvár and vice-general of the border-fortress zone of the Cisdanubian district and mining region (1611–1632). The selection of the methods and tools to elaborate the sources and the first quantitative analysis concerning the 1620s has already been completed. Currently, the author is working on the vice-captain’s biography and sources concerning the peace process of Szőny (1627) and negotiations in Szécsény and Buda (1628–1629). More precisely, the article aims at summarising the new partial results of the research into sources concerning him. These new results can help complete and correct the data of Koháry’s biography. Furthermore, the analysis of these new sources allows for a better understanding of his life, relationships, acts, and financial status. In historical literature, a wide range of studies can be found concerning the life of Koháry’s son (István I) and grandson (István II), but research has not focused sufficiently on Péter, who established the reputation and status of the Koháry Family.

In the years 1874–1877 Mieczysław Błażowski took up the job of organizing the Przemyśl municipal files. The result of his work was the development of the Catalogue of the State Archives of the Royal City of Przemyśl. It has the form of a book and is currently kept at the National Archive in Przemyśl in the fonds “Files of the city of Przemyśl”, sign. 2388. Apart from the catalogue of archival material Błażowski developed a list of printed works titled „The list of printed works found in the archives”. The list was later complemented by Błażowski’s successors at the position of the city archivist – Kazimierz Górski and Tadeusz Troskolański. “The list of printed works…” has 95 items and contains printed works which the fonds obtained by way of donations or purchases. Taking the position of the city archivist in 1911, Tadeusz Troskolański began developing a professional archive library, e.g. through purchasing publications on paleography and diplomacy

W imieniu praw Korony Św. Wacława. Memoriał ks. Václava Štulca do premiera hrabiego Alfreda Józefa Potockiego z 1870 r.

Author(s): Łukasz Chrobak / Language(s): Polish Issue: 1/2023

An 1870 memorandum |by Rev. Václav Štulc to the Prime Minister Alfred Józef Potocki Reverend Václav Štulc, a Czech independence activist, a Polonophile, was pretty familiar with aristocratic elites in Galicia. He maintained particularly close contacts with princes Lubomirski from Przeworsk. After the Austrian Empire had turned into the dualistic Austro-Hungarian Monarchy, he joined the circle of those Czechs who wanted Vienna to acknowledge their aspirations to independence or grant them the status of the third power in the country next to Austria and Hungary. Štulc wrote a sort of a memorandum to Alfred Józef Potocki, the then Prime Minister in the Austrian government, requesting his support for the Czech efforts. In that letter he justified the legitimacy of establishing Austria-Hungary-Bohemia and he warned against Czech separatism which could turn towards Germany or Russia, which could bring about a serious military conflict.

MIĘDZY IDEAŁEM A RZECZYWISTOŚCIĄ. PRAWNY I SPOŁECZNY MODEL WÓJTA W TEORII I PRAKTYCE NA POGÓRZU KARPACKIM OD XVI DO XVIII WIEKU

Author(s): Piotr Kołpak / Language(s): Polish Issue: 85/2023

The author aims to develop the ideal model of a village head called in Polish wójt (Lat. advocatus) in the early modern era and to con- front it with the minutes of the hearings of the village offices of the Carpathian Foothills region from the sixteenth to the late eighteenth century. The model of wójt office was constructed based on the content of the oaths of office, writ- ings of legal theorists, and economic handbooks. A good wójt was character- ised mainly by an appropriate attitude towards his duties: loyalty to the lord and the community, fairness in judging and the dignified exercise of his office. In this context, the records of court trials conducted against wójts were ana- lysed to yield conclusions concerning, among other things, the subjectivity of the wójt’s office in the early modern village of the Carpathian Foothills region.

Средневековые городища на Южном Буге. Освоение пространства и предназначение укреплений

Средневековые городища на Южном Буге. Освоение пространства и предназначение укреплений

Author(s): Olha Manihda / Language(s): Russian Issue: 2/2021

This paper deals with the hill-forts of the medieval tribe of "Ulichi" who came to a region of Southern Bug River in the late 10th century AD and left here about 50 remains of hill-forts. Among the special characters of ulichi hill-forts are the construction of shafts with stone covering, the placement of wells inside the fortifications, and the protection of water sources by additional fortifications. One of the interesting traditions of hillforts location is paired settlements located across the ravine or on the neighboring capes not further than 500 m from each other (such as hill-forts Tarasivka or Sosny). Considering the basic version that ulichi people in the territory of Southern Bug basin are not an autochthonous population, we are inevitably faced with the question of how exactly they used the space in which they decided to settle? The Ulichi people become identifiable at the end of the 10th century, in a region that until then had belonged to the distribution area of the Raikovetska archaeological culture of the 8th-10th centuries. We created a map of the ulichi hill-forts known for today, which is counts 50 objects, located on an area of 14 300 km2. and provided a viewshed analysis of 3 km and 5km visibility zone for 50 hill-forts. Thus, we can say that these hill-forts were not built for the purpose of domination and for control of the territory, or with the aim of the defensive line construction.

The paper is probe into the ecclesiastical and religious conditions at the turn of the 16th and 17th centuries from the perspective of Prague archbishopric through the person of the tenth archbishop of Prague, Zbyněk Berka of Dubá and Lipá (1551-1606). The archbishop's family background, the positions of power of his closest relatives and his journey towards ecclesiastical benefices, which ends in 1592 and the acquisition of the See of St. John, are presented. The subsequent key passage deals with Berke's recatholization activities and the associated nuncio at the imperial court in Prague. The article outlines the complex religious situation of the time and the methods of recatholization applied, which tries to interpret the basis of analysis of the archbishop's correspondence.
