Bosna v chorvatských národně-integračních ideologiích 19. století

Author(s): Petr Stehlík / Language(s): Czech

The work comprehensively characterizes and assesses the status and role of Bosnia in Croatian national integration ideologies, which greatly contributed to the formation of modern Croatian nation in the 19th century (Illyrism, Yugoslavism, “Pravaštvo“). The text is written from a historical perspective and based on the comparative analysis of political and literary sources of the time. Although Bosnia has been a subject of interest for practically all generations of Croatian politicians, no similar work has been written so far, describing the transformations and constant ideas about the historical, political and national status of Bosnia, outlining the creation of the image of Bosnia and its inhabitants in the Croatian milieu.

Persuasiveness of the Words, Pictures and Gestures in the History of Political Ideas

Persuasiveness of the Words, Pictures and Gestures in the History of Political Ideas

Author(s): Béla Mester / Language(s): English Publication Year: 0

A historian of political ideas used to interpret the words of political communities, pictures shown by them, and their gestures as political acts. During the interpretation, the switch between the analyses of the former three is often problematic. Interpretation of the words causes the fewest problems, and we have methods for the interpretation of pictures from the history of arts. In the intellectual history, the Cambridge school had offered a method for taking “the text in context”, using the term of “writing act” in the historical analysis, based on the philosophies of “speech acts.” Deep researches of the Cambridge school have re-established the authority and role of rhetoric in political philosophy, at least in its historical concern. “Pictorial turn” has offered the term of “pictorial speech act” for the theory and history of the religious and secularised fine arts. However, the terms of “writing act” and “pictorial act” are relatively new tools for the intellectual history, and their usage is abundant in theoretical problems; the real trouble has emerged, when the picture starts moving, or the talking person makes gestures. At first we think the cause of the trouble that of the authors of our written sources; later we understand that it is in our own point of view; finally, we recognise that the theories of the history of philosophy about the relationship between the picture and word are useless for our aims. The solution is hidden in a theory of gestures, developed independently from the theories of pictures, and languages. I have met this problem at first in my researches concerning English classics. In the present lecture I will show early modern instances from the history of religion and political ideas, with an analysis of the parallel reasoning by words, pictures and gestures in historical situations of early modernity.

Leksykon idei wędrownych na słowiańskich Bałkanach, XVIII-XXI wiek

Author(s): / Language(s): Polish

The eighth volume of the extensive (ten-volume) monograph by Polish Slavic studies scholars (with contributions from scholars from a number of foreign research centres), made possible by an NCN OPUS grant (2014/13/B/HS2/01057). In terms of form, the monograph is a lexicon, the main body of which consists of entries-articles on the history of 27 selected ideas that anticipated and shaped the processes of modernization in the region: agrariarism, anarchism, capitalism, clericalization, confessions, conservatism, culture, education, enlightenment, evolution, history, homeland, humanism, liberalism, modernity, nation, politics, progress, rationalism, reformation, religion, revolution, schooling, secularization, socialism, tradition, and universalism. Their semantics, change able as it was in response to local conditions, was investigated separately for each of the seven current states of the southern Slavdom: Bosnia and Herzegovina, Bulgaria, Croatia, Macedonia, Montenegro, Serbia, and Slovenia. Volume 8 presents the three ideas – capitalism, homeland, and politics – that are at the foundations of the European discourses of modernization and anti-modernization, of the European imaginary of the human intellectual condition as the key to the formation of societies. The book contains many synthetically expressed, original and source-based insights on the southern Slavic cultures’ struggles with modernity.

ATTRIBUTIONS AND MISATTRIBUTIONS AT THE ORIGINS OF SPECIAL RELATIVITY

ATTRIBUTIONS AND MISATTRIBUTIONS AT THE ORIGINS OF SPECIAL RELATIVITY

Author(s): Marco Mamone Capria,Maria Grazia Manini / Language(s): English Publication Year: 0

Minkowski wrote that a basic mathematical result (the Lorentz invariance of Maxwell equations) for the newborn special theory of relativity was “the theorem of relativity by Lorentz”. We explain that this name is unwarranted, and that in fact among the founders of the theory it was Poincaré who came closest to proving it. It is argued that historians should be careful not to rely uncritically on the bits of historical reconstruction that for different purposes scientists insert in their technical papers.

SURVEYING METHODS AND INSTRUMENTS IN THE SIXTH BOOK OF IERONIMO PICO FONTICULANO’S TREATISE ON GEOMETRY (1597)

SURVEYING METHODS AND INSTRUMENTS IN THE SIXTH BOOK OF IERONIMO PICO FONTICULANO’S TREATISE ON GEOMETRY (1597)

Author(s): Mario Centofanti,Stefano Brusaporci / Language(s): English Publication Year: 0

Many treatises on geometry were written in the XVI century. Ieronimo Pico Fonticulano (1541–1596) in the sixty book of his treatise titled Geometria (1597) describes the surveying instruments and their methodological and operative use. The aim of the paper is studying the instruments described by Fonticulano and, thanks to the numerous applicative examples, analysing the surveying methods. It focuses on instrument’s geometry and materials, their components, the using modalities, the instrumental positions, the working principles, the main application allowed. Last but not least instruments and methods are studied in relation to their historical context and to the ones presented in other treatises of the same age.

CONFIRMING SPECIAL RELATIVITY IN SPITE OF HIMSELF. THE ORIGIN OF IVES–STILWELL EXPERIMENT

CONFIRMING SPECIAL RELATIVITY IN SPITE OF HIMSELF. THE ORIGIN OF IVES–STILWELL EXPERIMENT

Author(s): Roberto Lalli / Language(s): English Publication Year: 0

In 1938, the American industrial physicist Herbert E. Ives performed the Ives–Stilwell experiment, named after him and his assistant G. R. Stilwell. While physics textbooks describe the experiment as a confirmation of special relativity theory (SRT), Ives regarded the result of the experiment as a proof of the Larmor–Lorentz hypothesis of the contraction of the time–pulse of an atomic clock in motion through the ether. The aim of this communication is to provide a historical analysis of Ives’s motivations to perform the experiment as well as of his theoretical presuppositions concerning the relationship between ether theories and relativity.

Neuroza. Zagrożone męskości

Author(s): Krystyna Kłosińska / Language(s): Polish

The book deals with the figures of masculinity produced by various discourses of the late XIX c.: medical, economic, historical, hygienic. The interpretations relate to literary and paraliterary texts. The figure of the neurasthenic allegorizes masculinities threatened by excessive work, diffuse subjectivity, and perverse sexuality. The Polish idiom of neurosis has its particular manifestation in Without Dogma: Sienkiewicz, contrary to the theorists of neurosis, has designed the protagonist in such a way that his body is the heritage of the vigorous ancestors known from the Trilogy. In the petty bourgeois world of Dulska and Dulski gender has class, economic, socio-cultural determinants.

Slawistyka integralna – naukowy kanon i erozja systemu (kontrapunkty południowo- i zachodniosłowiańskie)

Author(s): Lech Miodyński / Language(s): Polish

The book describes in the chronological order – with the attention focused mainly on the 19th and the beginning of the 20th century – key elements of the evolution of the European Slavic studies in the context of integrative and disintegrative processes. These tendencies are situated within the framework of diverse Slavic studies and their sociopolitical and cultural surroundings. The illustration of this issue is provided by the comparison of the extensive factography from the history of the polymorphous discipline, discussed in the methodological, socio-environmental and ethnopolitical dimensions. The oppositions “centralism – particularisms” or “collective norm – individual norm” have been designed for the ordering of rich material from all regions of Slavdom – in the perspective of creating and breaking the canon of the scholarly discoveries and the representations of the essence of Slavic studies as such.

Propagandă şi diplomaţie culturală în perioada comunistă. Institutul Român pentru Relaţiile Culturale cu Străinătatea - o istorie inedită

Author(s): Carmen Stratone / Language(s): Romanian

This volume fits into the large field of cultural history, but addresses a new theme: cultural propaganda abroad. It is the first monographic investigation on an institution – The Romanian Institute for the Cultural Relations Abroad (IRRCS, in Romanian) – to which the communist authorities assigned the special role of promoting Romanian cultural values abroad, officially accepted at that time. The task undertaken by the author, in the form of research for a doctoral thesis, was much more difficult than others of the same nature, since, in addition to the political-ideological documents identified in the funds from the Central Committee archive of the Romanian Communist Party hosted by the National Archives of Romania, she had to insist long to receive access to the IRRCS Archive, which is under the administration of the Romanian Cultural Institute, the patrimonial heir of the former institution. Even not organized for research, this archive had in its composition the documents of a technical-administrative nature of the IRRCS, without which the work of the institution could not be fully understood. Established in 1948, with the main purpose of popularizing abroad the “cultural, economic and social achievements” of the communist regime, IRRCS has a history that closely follows the stages of evolution of the political regime, from the incessant Stalinism of the period of “Popular Democracy”, to the opening to the West in the 1960ʼs-1970ʼs, to finally pass through external isolation, followed by the collapse of the late 1980ʼs. But beyond the political-ideological framework in which he had to evolve and which is abundantly emphasized in the book, IRRCS also had his own life, more or less autonomous. The personalities who were involved in the projects carried out through the Institute (writers, dramatic artists, painters, sculptors, musicians, etc.) used the opportunity offered by the regime to visit other countries, to get to know and exchange ideas with personalities of world culture, but also for their works, through translations, exhibitions, artistic performances, to reach the public in either capitalist or “brotherly” countries. The Romanian public also benefited, as long as most of the projects were agreed on a reciprocal basis. This is an invitation to understand the complicated mechanism of foreign cultural propaganda from the communist period. Through the transformations to which it was subjected over the years, by the type of personalities appointed at the head of the institution, through the theme promoted and through the evolution of the budget and the number of employees, the evolution of the IRRCS is also a small-scale history of the communist period in Romania.

Confesiunile elitei comuniste. România 1944-1965: Rivalităţi, represiuni, crime… Arhiva Alexandru Şiperco, Volumul I

Author(s): Andrei Șiperco / Language(s): Romanian

Starting with the ’70s until the revolution of December 1989, Alexandru Siperco conducted several hundred unofficial interviews, totaling thousands of pages, with 350 members and sympathizers from illegality of the Romanian Communist Party (RCP) – among them many former members of the Communist nomenklatura or of the repression apparatus during the Gheorghiu-Dej regime – but also with representatives of former historical parties, including Corneliu Coposu, Ioan Hudita and Camil Demetrescu. No one, neither in Romania nor in the rest of the states of the former communist bloc, has initiated and even less has managed to achieve such an approach that concerns the uncosmitized history of communism. For Alexandru Siperco, the determinant was his desire to know as much as possible of the period between April 4, 1944, and the moment of March 19, 1965, the death of Gheorghiu-Dej. From the interviews given to Alexandru Siperco are not missing events such as: the act of august 23; actions for the conquest of power; liquidation of the political opposition; the struggle for power in the RCP and its consequences; collectivization and monetary reform; the role of Soviet advisers; the activity of repressive bodies; the regime in communist prisons; relations with Moscow leaders; the Rajk, Slansk and Kostov trials; foreign policy; blackmail, betrayals, assassinations; friends and rivals. There are also memories of illegals regarding the period of political detention, the Civil War in Spain, the French Resistance and the political emigration to the U.S.S.R. The testimonies present in this volume: Gheorghe Adorian, Petra Afanasiade, Milo Andreescu, Emilian Angheliu, Gheorghe Apostol, Melita Apostol, Ion Ardeleanu, Dumitru Baciu, Colonel Balaci, Eugen Bantea, Mircea Balanescu, Bernard Bereanu, Florica Bodnaras, Manole Bodnaras, Cristina Boico, Traian Borcescu, Bordea, Harry Brauner and Lena Constante, Sergiu Bratescu, Iosif Breban, Silviu Brucan, Jean Bruker, Zamfir brumaru, Valeriu Bucicov, Simion Bughici, Avram Bunaciu, Mihai Burca, Francisc Butyka.

Tam za tím mořem piva aneb Naše Amerika, jak ji málokdo zná. Příspěvek k historii české a slovenské emigrace do Ameriky

Author(s): Miloslav, ml. Rechcígl / Language(s): Czech

The present publication deals with America as few people know it and as Voskovec and Werich sang about it in their popular sessions, and it is based on the author's lifelong ant research. It focuses on the history of emigrants from the historic Czech lands and Czechoslovakia and covers the period from the discovery of the New World to the present day. It includes not only the United States, but also Canada and Latin America. Individual sections deal with the pioneers, the arrival and settlement of immigrants in various states and regions of the Americas and the establishment of Czech centers and communities, the public and social activities of the settlers, and the various types of immigrants and their contributions to the Americas. Although they were not numerous in number compared to other ethnic groups, their contribution to America was phenomenal.

Cadrilaterul. Ideologie cominternistă şi iredentism bulgar, 1919-1940

Author(s): Dan Cătănuş / Language(s): Romanian

The volume is the result of a research theme initiated in 1999 within the N.I.S.T. and which focused on the situation of the Cadrilater (Southern Dobruja) in the interwar period from the perspective of the interference of communist-type activities in the Balkans, carried under cominternist tutelage and of Bulgarian irredentism. Several research directions were pursued: the activity of the Internal Dobrujan Revolutionary Organisation ( V.D.R.O.); the activity of the Dobrujan Revolutionary Organisation (D.R.O.), a communist-type organization, detached from the V.D.R.O. in 1925 and who acted mainly in the Southern Dobruja under the guidance, at least theoretically, of the Romanian Communist Party (R.C.P.) and the Comintern; the attitude of the R.C.P. towards the national problem, with emphasis on the situation of Southern Dobruja, as well as the activity of the regional R.C.P. in Dobruja; the involvement of the Communist International in the Balkans and its relationship with the R.C.P. and the U.S.S.R.'s attitude in this regard. The presented documents outline both Bulgarian and Romanian theses on Dobruja and especially its southern part, the reader having the necessary elements for forming his own opinion.

The present volume aims to highlight, through some documents from the archive of the Central Committee of Romanian Communist Party - which we consider essential -, the evolution of communist Romania from an unconditional alignment with Moscow's decisions to a policy on its own. In this evolution, the emergence of major divergences between China and the USSR provided the favorable historical context for the Romanian communists, who knew how to skillfully use the conflict between the two major parties of the communist world, in order to make its own voice heard.

Putere şi societate. Lagărul comunist sub impactul destalinizării, 1956

Author(s): Vasile Buga,Dan Cătănuş / Language(s): Romanian

Through its events, the year 1956 established itself as a turning point in the history of world communism. The ideological innovations brought by Nikita Khrushchev at the XXth Congress of Communist Party of Soviet Union and especially the presentation of the "secret" report on Stalinist crimes influenced, to a considerable extent, the short, medium and long-term evolution of the parties members of the international communist movement and of the regimes of Popular Democracy grouped in the communist bloc. The coordinators of this volume have proposed to make available a work meant to bring together new informations from archives, theories and new perspectives on the effects of destalinization in the communist bloc, the relations between Moscow and its allies, the system crises that occurred in the autumn of 1956 in Poland and Hungary and their consequences.
