Digital Self

Digitalno ja

Author(s): Jelena Guga / Language(s): Serbian

The ubiquitous use of digital technologies has enabled vast possibilities such as instant access to information, presence on any part of the planet, multiplication and transformation of identity, as well as re-articulation and reconstruction of embodiment. Science fiction film and literature, new media art practices, scientific research, and cyber theories often deal with the idea of leaving the body behind and uploading the immortal mind into digital databases where we can be whatever and whoever we want. Compared to modern technology, biological body is often considered obsolete and, as such, it is not “equipped” keep up with the exponential technological development. It is not surprising then that many studies, either scientific or popular, disregard the problem of corporeality and focus more on the issues of identity, consciousness, and disembodiment in digital worlds. Therefore, this book presents the works that focus on the issues of embodiment in the context of new media and their impact on social reality. The starting premise of the discussions is that without a physical body, there is neither virtual nor real. The book points to the importance of the physical body in biotechnological interfaces and the ways the role and functions of the body transform in virtual environments and affect our perceptions and understanding of human ontology

PSYCHOLOGICAL RESILIANCE OF CHILDREN OF ALCOHOLICS

ODPORNOŚĆ PSYCHICZNA DZIECI ALKOHOLIKÓW

Author(s): Iwona Grzegorzewska / Language(s): Polish

Keywords: PSYCHOLOGICAL RESILIANCE; CHILDREN OF ALCOHOLICS

Human, not too Human. An Essay on Legal Personhood and the Challenges of the 21. Century

Human, not too Human. An Essay on Legal Personhood and the Challenges of the 21. Century

Ludzkie, niezbyt ludzkie. Esej o podmiotowości prawnej i wyzwaniach XXI wieku

Author(s): Tomasz Pietrzykowski / Language(s): Polish

Keywords: the subject; personhood; the human; law; science; technology; philosophy; rights

The book explores the legal conception of personhood in the context of the contemporary challenges, such as the status of non-human animals, human-animal biological mixtures (chimeras and hybrids), cyborgisation of the human body or developing technologies of artificial autonomic agents. It reveals the humanistic assumptions underlying the legal approach to personhood and examines the extent to which they are undermined by the present and imminent scientific and technological progress. The book discusses also some potential ways in which the most compelling problems related to the shape of personhood in law could be addressed. In particular, it outlines the conception of non-personal subjecthood that could provide an adequate normative solutions for the problematic status of sentient animals and some other kinds of entities. Arguably, non-personal subjects of law ought to be regarded as holders of one and only right only — the right to be taken into account (to have one’s vital interests taken into account and balanced with all other competing considerations). The proposed idea of non-personal subjecthood is based on inclusive humanism as opposed to the current exclusive and exceptionalist version of the humanistic foundations of the law. Inclusive humanism as the basis of the legal approach to personhood does not repudiate fully the speciesm favouring human beings. The reasons to maintain minimalized speciesm in the way in which law regards human and non-human entities are demonstrated and defended.

Analityzmy leksykalne i ich syntetyczne odpowiedniki w prasie

Author(s): Katarzyna Burska / Language(s): Polish

Keywords: language studies; press

The folk musical culture of Śląsk Cieszyński with special reference to Beskid Śląski. The song folklore of Istebna, Koniaków and Jaworzynka – sources of the repertoire and their transformations

Ludowa kultura muzyczna Śląska Cieszyńskiego ze szczególnym uwzględnieniem Beskidu Śląskiego. Folklor pieśniowy Istebnej, Koniakowa i Jaworzynki – źródła repertuarowe a ich transformacje

Author(s): Magdalena Szyndler / Language(s): Polish

Keywords: folk musical culture of Śląsk Cieszyński; folk music; Beskid Śląski

The present monograph is a reflection of the author’s interests which were pursued for many years, which eventually resulted in the research in the musical folklore of Śląsk Cieszyński (especially in places located in its southern part i.e. Beskid Śląski – Istebna, Jaworzynka, Koniaków). It constitutes a natural continuation of previous explorations devoted to the vocal folklore of the Polish minority in Zaolzie (the part of Śląsk Cieszyński which today is a part of the Czech Republic). The purpose of the dissertation was to separate the present phase of the evolution of folk musical repertoire of the aforementioned area in the folklore – folklorism – folk perspective. Therefore the author’s idea had to do with a monographical treatment of the song repertoire in the genre-related and horizontal perspective (a musicological perspective and also an analysis according to the function and the content) and the establishment of its peculiar properties by conducting a comparative analysis of the early material (songbooks which were published since the end of the 19th century), the Zaolzie material and the material that was collected during the field research conducted in the years 2011–2015 in the Trójwsie area (Istebna, Jaworzynka, Koniaków – individual and group interviews). Moreover, the publication features descriptions of the transformations of source folklore – the folk and hybrid material. The author could not disregard the historical and political perspective (hence a chapter devoted to history), which exerted a decisiveinfluence upon the development of the changes and transformations of folk culture (and ofother types of culture as well). The last chapter contains the results of research in the familiarity of the children and young people from the schools of Śląsk Cieszyński (sixth-grade elementary school pupils and third-grade gimnazjum pupils) with the folk repertoire, which complement the present state and the functioning of musical folklore in the area that was discussed. A further merit of the work consists in the fact that until now no monograph devoted to a similar theme was published.

„ODRA” (1945–1950) A monograph of the journal

„ODRA” (1945–1950) Monografia czasopisma

Author(s): Paweł Sarna / Language(s): Polish

Keywords: PRL; Wilhelm Szewczyk; „Odra”; „Odrodzenie”; „Kuźnica”;„Tygodnik Powszechny”;

This volume presents the history and role of “Odra”, a social-cultural journal founded by journalists and writers gathered around Wilhelm Szewczyk. The journal was published in Katowice in the years 1945–1950, first as a biweekly and since 1946, as a weekly. The legacy of the journal is of particular value. Within a few years, it became one of the most important social-cultural periodicals in post-war Poland. This volume traces its development; it consists of six parts. The first part presents the social and political background of the journal. In the years that followed World War Two, the social and cultural press was a major forum for discussion, in particular, for debates on culture. The most important debates of the time included the battle for the Polish intelligentsia, in which the “Odra” journal participated. Such disputes were, to a considerable extent, a substitute for political topics, that is, for problems which could not be explicitly addressed.Journals that were published at that time had one thing in common: they were all subject to censorship. However, it must be remembered that censorship was merely a tool in the hands of the party. Because “Odra” was regarded as an oppositional journal, censors read it very closely. As a result of their intervention, the published versions of articles were sometimes quite remote from their original forms. The second part of the volume presents the methodological assumptions of the project. The research comprises a quantitative analysis, that is, an analysis of the content, and a qualitative analysis of the material. In methodological terms, the study of the role and significance of the “Odra” journal in the years 1945–1950 is situated at the junction of literary studies and media studies. The third part outlines the main characters of the narration. Protagonists of the “Odra” journal included indigenous inhabitants and settlers. Journalists stood up for those who were part of a community of suffering: harmed by bandits and the system, often rejected and pushed to the edge of the political and cultural life. In 1946, Zbyszko Bednorz, one of the regular collaborators of the journal, wrote that in the awareness of Poles, the Western and Northern Territories still remained occupied and strange. In fact, for a long time, they continued to be explored and colonised. Moreover, they had a special place on the map of fear and terror because of the robberies by Soviet soldiers, the Citizens’ Militia, and common bandits. It was an intention of “Odra” editors to shape the journal in such a way so that it was perceived as both recording and commenting on all important events that took place in post-war Germany. The issue of Polish-German relations was analysed in particular detail, taking into consideration events of the most remote past. The most active commentator on the German problem was Wilhelm Szewczyk, the editor-in-chief, who wrote about post-war Germany and Polish-German relations in the column entitled Co robią Niemcy? [What are the Germans doing?]. The narration about Poland’s western neighbour in the texts published in the Co robią Niemcy? series forms a recognisable pattern: it begins with a simple juxtaposition between “us” and “them” in the first post-war years; later, however, this opposition dissolves so that the division blurs, a change influenced to a considerable extent by the events in both German states and by the political course taken by the Polish authorities. The book argues that an important asset of the journal was its programme, which is described and analysed in the fourth part of the volume. “Odra” drew from the national thought of the interwar period. However, it must be emphasised that it cannot be suspected of having supported nationalist causes.Journalists of the “Odra” journal proposed a cultural programme for – to use the terminology of the time – the Recovered Territories. They were actively involved in polemics with Kuźnica, a journal promoting Marxist thought and an important title on the national scale.A considerable part of the content of the journal was concerned with analyses of literary texts, which are discussed in the last two parts of the volume. “Odra” carried texts by widely respected writers, including those whose influence on the shape of Polish literature and culture was growing with time: Tadeusz Różewicz, Tymoteusz Karpowicz, and Stanisław Lem. Browsing through the issues of “Odra”, one will easily notice that the literary themes and texts often directly corresponded with the content of articles which discussed other issues. Poetry and prose frequently functioned as illustrations of various problems addressed by journalists. “Odra” editors used this strategy, for instance, to raise the readers’ interest in the problem of Polish-German and Polish-Czechoslovakian relations.Historians of literature and media scholars often appeal for more research being done into the periodical press in general, and into the period immediately following World War Two in particular, when the new post-Yalta order was forming. Despite the abundance of source material, studies of the subject are scarce. So far, no special monograph devoted solely to the “Odra” journal has been published. It is hoped that the present volume will fill this gap.

Profesor zwyczajna w Chrześcijańskiej Akademii Teologicznej w Warszawie. Dwukrotna stypendystka Robinson College Uniwersytetu w Cambridge. Autorka książek: Samoświadomość nauczyciela (1995); Stygmat społeczny (2007, 2008, 2013, 2018); Białoruska mniejszość narodowa jako grupa stygmatyzowana (2000); Wstyd (2013). Rozwój myśli księgoznawczej i bibliotekoznawczej w świetle czasopism naukowych i fachowych wydawanych na terenach ziem polskich (1901–1939)

Author(s): Beata Żołędowska-Król / Language(s): Polish

Keywords: book science; library science; scientific journals; professional magazines

The aim of this paper is to show what role performed journals founded in the years 1901–1939 by book people in the development of book science and library science. The paper presents the functions of continuous publications (in the fields of book science, bibliophily, librarianship and library science) that shaped theoretical thought and research techniques of the evolving disciplines, formed the attitudes of librarians, mediated in sharing experience and modern methods of work organisation in the library, provided necessary information, among others, on possible forms of professional education. The first two chapters set out the conditions in which journals devoted to the book and the library had been established until 1939, present the profiles of the precursors who created the theoretical potential of Polish book science and library science, their views and the most important publishing repertoire, furthermore they outline the publishing and formal characteristics of the book people. In the third chapter, the composition of the examined scientific and professional journals was reconstructed (their structure, types of information) and the results of the content analysis were presented to show the contribution of a given title to the development of theoretical reflection and research trends that were reflected in its pages. The following nine journal titles were analysed: „Bibliotekarz” (Librarian) (1919), „Biuletyn Biblioteki Publicznej m.st. Warszawy” (the Bulletin of the Public Library of the Capital City of Warsaw) (1929-1939), „Exlibris” (1917–1929), „Książka” (Book) (1901–1914, 1922), „Pamiętnik Biblioteki Kórnickiej” (The Diary of the Kórnik Library) (1929–1930), „Przegląd Bibliograficzny” (The Bibliography Review) (1905–1926), „Przegląd Biblioteczny” (The Library Review) (1908–1911 [for the years 1908–1909]), „Przegląd Biblioteczny” (The Library Review) (1927–1939), and „Silva Rerum“ (1925–1939). In the fourth chapter, which serves the role of the summary, a model of bibliology and library science, worked out in the pages of the studied magazines, has been outlined. The chapter comprises the issues concerning bibliology and library science discussed in the journals, their contribution to the development of the methodology and terminology within the discipline of book science and library science and inspirations in the then Polish and foreign scientific works. Subsequently, the research topics that were dealt with in the examined magazines and were continued after 1945 have been presented. The results of the study made it possible to confirm the contribution of the journals in the followings: documenting the development and dissemination of theories, scientific views and results of scientific research within the domains of the book science and library science; learning about the achievements of the world science and the reception of them in Poland; popularising the scientific though among the people working and dealing with the book. The work is intended for specialists in various fields, representing primarily the broadly understood science concerning the book, as well as for press experts, cultural sociologists and researchers dealing with the history of science.

The main focus of the book is to prove the existence within the Romanian territory of incipient pre-theories of translation which constitute the foundation of today's translation studies research. The examination of various aspects of the translation activity carried out in the 18th and 19th centuries aims at underlining its contribution to the history of the Romanian literary language, to the history of Romanian literature as well as to the national and cultural identity. Cyrillo-Methodian Motifs in the Latin and Greek Literature

Кирилометодиевски мотиви в латинската и гръцката книжнина

Author(s): Slavia Barlieva / Language(s): Bulgarian

Keywords: The sources of the Cyrillo-Methodian tradition; the national identity, the relicts of S Clemens Romanus; the Chronicle of the Casaurian monastery in Abruzzo; the Long Greek Life of S. Nahum of Ohrid; German sermon on SS Cyril and Methodius.

The monograph is a contribution to the study of narratives, created in different periods of the Middle Ages and the Early Modernity, and considered as sources of the Cyrillo-Methodian tradition. The author interprets them as phenomena of identity – confessional, political, ethnic, cultural, using the motifs as key concepts for classification. The basic topics presented are the national identity, the relicts of S Clemens Romanus, and the sacral languages issue. Slavia Barlieva highlights here some of her discoveries in the field, made in the last few decades – such as the Elogium on S. Cyril in the Chronicle of the Casaurian monastery in Abruzzo (12th c.), or the records of the inventories of St. Vitus cathedral in Prague (14th c.). They are published with accompanying comments, chronologically organized in Greek and Latin sections. An Appendix is added to the main chapters, containing the Long Greek Life of S. Nahum of Ohrid and its Bulgarian translation, and a German sermon on SS Cyril and Methodius delivered in Vienna in 1720. The book is provided with a general index, an extensive bibliography, and a list of manuscripts and old prints consulted.

Sensitive strings of personality in romantic relationships

Wrażliwe struny osobowości w związkach romantycznych

Author(s): Marcin Moroń / Language(s): Polish

Keywords: reinforcement sensitivity theory; romantic relationships; interpersonal transgression

The aim of the book is to establish the role of temperamental sensitivity to pleasant and unpleasant stimuli in understanding the dynamics of responding to transgressions in romantic relationships. Using the neuropsychological reinforcement sensitivity theory of personality, there have been shown mechanisms of constructive and destructive reaction in the event of a breach of norms regulating mutual exchange by an intimate relationship partner. The analyses have demonstrated that sensitivity to negative stimuli and to motivational conflicts are the risk factors of avoidance and neglect of a romantic partner, and also revealed the mechanisms of this risk (e.g. difficulties in emotional regulation, reduced self-esteem and sensitivity to rewards and punishments in a romantic relationship).

Fiscal decentralisation as a constraint on the Leviathan phenomenon

Decentralizacja fiskalna jako ograniczenie zjawiska Lewiatana

Author(s): Beata Guziejewska / Language(s): Polish

Keywords: public finance; fiscal decentralisation;subnational government finance; Leviathan hypothesis

This monograph examines fiscal decentralisation and its constraining influence on the expansion of the public sector known as Leviathan with respect to J.M Buchanan’s Leviathan hypothesis of decentralised public finance structures. Fiscal decentralisation processes are discussed in the wide context of economic, political, administrative, sociological, and spatial factors. The analysis heavily draws on the achievements of the fiscal federalism theory. The purpose of the monograph is to expand the theoretical knowledge of fiscal decentralisation as a mechanism constraining and inhibiting the threats of Leviathan. It contains a review of previous empirical studies and presents evidence in support of the following research hypotheses:1. Fiscal decentralisation founded on the qualitative premises of the doctrine improves the efficiency of the public sector while constraining Leviathan.2. Decentralisation and fiscal decentralisation can be instrumental in constraining Leviathan in the face of tendencies to centralise the State released by post-crisis responses to the impacts of the pandemic.3. The multifaceted character of fiscal decentralisation causes that its constraining effect on Leviathan is not empirically confirmed for all areas and periods of time.4. Fiscal decentralisation is a significant element in defining a new paradigm of sustainable finance for post-pandemic years. The monograph addresses modern challenges faced by fiscal decentralisation, including the ESG concept (Environmental-Social-Governance) and the impacts of the pandemic. Its interdisciplinary deliberations conclude with a proposal for fiscal decentralisation processes to be incorporated into a new paradigm of sustainable finance.

The world in sinograms

Svět v sinogramech

Author(s): Tereza Slaměníková,David Uher / Language(s): Czech

Keywords: chinese; sinology; linguistics; china; sign writing

Languages using a pleremic writing system, from which Chinese is undoubtedly the most widespread, show a much deeper connection between language units and their graphic representations since it involves the semantic dimension. What makes the Chinese writing system a truly unique phenomenon is how its graphics capture the meaning of the represented linguistic unit. This semantic connection was primarily established through graphic components with their own meanings, so-called determinatives. Although their use was primarily associated with an effort to distinguish by graphic means the (often too many) different meanings of one sinogram, the entire system also undoubtedly provides unique insight into how ancient Chinese experienced reality. The semantic diversity of sinograms subordinated to one determinative forms a particular network of contexts with some relationship to the basic concept. This book provides a concise Czech translation of the oldest known study on Chinese grammatology Shuo Wen Jie Zi (Meaning Explanation of Primary Sinograms and Structure Analysis of Secondary Sinograms) which endeavors to reflect on the Chinese writing system as an essential bearer of Chinese culture. Based on the procedures of Chinese cultural linguistics, it adopts the author's determinative-based setting and analyses the so-called semantic profile of all the 540 determinatives by arranging sinograms into groups sharing certain semantic features
