GHOSTS AND THE MYTH OF CHILDREN’S INNOCENCE

Les fantômes et le mythe de l’innocence enfantine

Author(s): Jean Marigny / Language(s): French / Issue: 21/2011

Keywords: Fantastic Literature; Ghosts; Children; Evil; Innocence.

This paper deals with the treatment of ghost children in fantastic English literature. These characters are recurrent in Victorian literature. Unlike adult ghosts who are often malevolent, ghost children are harmless, generally the innocent victims of a cruel fate which they do not deserve. Their presence is only a sad reminder of what they suffered in their lifetime. This conception was shared by twentieth century writers until the 1970’s. Novels such as The Other by Thomas Tryon or Julia by Peter Straub completely shatter the myth of children’s innocence. This is clearly indicative of a post-Freudian concepttion. Freud and his disciples have demonstrated that young children, far from being the immaculate angels we like to imagine, have strong sexual drives which may lead them to criminal behaviour. As Sabine Büssing puts it, children in contemporary literature have become the “strangers in the house.”

Territorial Embeddedness and Geographical Origin Certifications in the European Union: The Case of a Romanian Cheese

Territorial Embeddedness and Geographical Origin Certifications in the European Union: The Case of a Romanian Cheese

Author(s): Monica Stroe / Language(s): English / Issue: Suppl. 2/2021

Keywords: Protected Designation of Origin; terroir; cheese; bioregional discourse; territorial embeddedness; Romania;

By analyzing the application file of Telemea de Ibãnesti cheese, registered by Romania under the Protected Designation of Origin (pdo) quality scheme of the eu, the paper seeks to capture how applicants incorporate territorial elements in the construction of geographical origin. According to the framework delineated by the pdo certifications, the product needs to document characteristics essentially or exclusively due to the geographical environment, including natural or human elements. The analysis attempts to capture how producers employ bioregional discourses, with the purpose of creating the territorial embeddedness of food products, by suggesting a symbiosis of nature, animals and human actors. It shows how the applicants’ argument privileges the product’s connection with the physical environment and insists on capturing a sense of a mineral and hydroogical territorial embeddedness that is transferred in the end product.

The article reveals the connotation of the key concepts “information war” and “critical thinking”. The study analyzes the features of information war as a manipulative technology and reveals the role of critical thinking tools (analysis, synthesis, interpretation) in counteraction to information sabotage. It has been proven that the process of information influence on public and individual consciousness is ambiguous – it can be either positive and contribute to raising the level of public awareness of urgent problems, or it can carry out information attacks with the aim of destructive influence on consciousness, cultivation of hatred and dispersal of the feeling of “treason”. It is argued that information manipulation affects the consciousness of a person through an avalanche of rumors, manipulations, and fakes, aimed at weakening and ultimately destroying the ability of self-identification and self-determination. This is an extremely dangerous situation that can lead to a state of disorientation if countermeasures are not used, one of which is the tools of critical thinking and fact-checking to evaluate information.
