Constructions and Deconstructions of Cultural Identities in Greater Romania. B. Fundoianu and the Self-Colonizing Metaphor

Author(s): Olga Bartosiewicz / Language(s): English / Issue: 4/2018

Keywords: Self-Colonizing Metaphor; Ideologies in Greater Romania; B. Fundoianu; Orthodoxism; Sămănătorism; Synchronism; Cultural Identity in Greater Romania; Westernization; Romanian Modernity

The article “Constructions and Deconstructions of Cultural Identities in GreaterRomania. B. Fundoianu and the Self-Colonizing Metaphor” proposes a general overview oftwo dominant narratives in cultural identity discourse in Greater Romania: the traditionalistand the modernist one. Even though the proponents of each of the tendencies have a differentvision of constitutive elements which Romanian identity consists of their aspirations aresimilar: they want to define Romania’s place in the changed political system in Europeafter World War I. Furthermore, they attempt to answer the following question: what path ofevolution should the new-born country follow?However, the article also presents a critical approach to the ideas and myths circulatingin intellectual milieus after 1918. Hence, the second part of the study analyzes two essays:“Preface” to Images and Books from France and “Critical Spirit in Romanian Culture,”published by a Romanian Jewish author B. Fundoianu (1898–1944). Through his texts, theyoung essayist builds a counter-narrative which exposes the danger of blind search fornational specificity and encourages Romanian intellectuals to use the “critical spirit” as themain tool in the processes of modernization. Denominating Romania “a French culturalcolony,” Fundoianu draws attention to the dilemmas discussed in the article through theprism of the category of “self-colonization,” introduced to the discourse about Central andSouth-Eastern Europe by the contemporary Bulgarian historian Alexander Kiossev.

Studiu realizat pe baza metodei rezistive concepute şi dezvoltate de către Conrad Schlumberger şi Sabba S. Ștefănescu, doi titani ai geofizicii

Author(s): Monica Moraru / Language(s): Romanian / Issue: 14/2021

Keywords: electrical engineering – 1D and 3D inversion; environmental factors-geoelectrical resistivity; probabilistic models; Conrad Schlumberger; Sabba S. Ştefănescu;

The identification and evaluation of environmental pollution is a study based on methods designed and developed by Conrad Schlumberger and Sabba S. Ștefănescu, two geniuses of Geophysics. The former is the founder of the resistivity method, which determines the processes underlying electrical measurements, and the latter is the one who develops the method and takes it to the level of geoelectrical tomography. This helps specialists in research and exploration to monitor the anthropogenic activities which occur at ground level and even to anticipate the anthropic evolution. The processing of signals of a diagram, in particular – the electrical resistivity, describes the variations of randomly recorded data that determine the depth of a layer.

ANTI-ESTABLISHMENT DOCUMENTARY THEATRE

Author(s): Ioana Toloargă / Language(s): English / Issue: 2/2021

Capete înfierbântate 2020 (Heated Heads 2020) continues the performing endeavour which started in 2010 with the homonymous performance and which brought the 1990 Mineriad back to our attention. This time, this second premiere of Stagiunea Digitală de Teatru Politic 2020 (2020 Political Theatre Digital Season) has drawn inspiration from an acute contemporary situation: the crisis of the Romanian medical system caused (or rather revealed) by the fight against SARS-CoV-2. The project team reunited around this burning topic is made up of Mihaela Michailov and David Schwartz – co-authors of the text, the latter having also directed the performance, joined by Alexandru Potocean (the actor-performer of Capete înfierbântate 2010/ Heated Heads 2010), and Oana Rusu, as well as Teodora Retegan and Maria Sgârcitu, the latter two having created the music accompanying the scenic movement, which was choreographed by Mihai Mihalcea. The scenography was designed by Irina Gâdiuță, and Cătălin Rulea was the graphic designer. An essential aspect of the text construction and the performance structure is the collaboration with Dora Constantinovici for research, as the authors highlight the role of the interviews with doctors and labour union members, first and foremost.

Keywords: poetry; pandemic; literature; liberty; art; faith; salvation;

The title of the reviewed anthology illustrates in a perfect way the feelings to be guessed beyond the written lines. Nowadays’ events are deeply perceived like boundaries to freedom and a return to fundamental values of humanity as well. The authors of the short texts belong to different fields of activity, they come from different backgrounds, they have different ages. Their multiple ways of living the Covid 19 experience generally find similar solutions for getting out of the darkened scenery of everyday life under the sign of empathy and the interest for the good and the beautiful. Voices coming from different parts of the world reunite to let the need for humanity and value speak. Some voices present in this anthology underline the importance of consciousness and the recognition of a supreme force of faith giving sense to life and governing one’s existence. Other voices show, somehow following a similar path, that human beings may find relief in art. In one way or the other, the anthology whose editors are Maria Vesa, Sonia Elvireanu, Brândușa Tămaș and Rodica Gabriela Chira comes in front of the readers with different possible solutions for challenging times. Personal reflections on space and time are regrouped under a same dome, the one testifying that humanity was not prepared to cross such times inscribed between the agony of an existence and the hope which could make us go on. The reader is invited to pass from innocence to acceptance through texts accompanied by suggestive images. The double cover of the bilingual anthology also is very inspired. A good translation succeeds in transferring messages from one language to another, namely from Romanian into French and vice versa either in verse or in prose.

The Interaction of Codes in French Comedies Subtitled in Romanian

The Interaction of Codes in French Comedies Subtitled in Romanian

Interacțiunea Codurilor în Comediile Franceze Subtitrate în Limba Română

Author(s): Angela Grădinaru / Language(s): Romanian / Issue: 1-2/2020

Keywords: code;codification;connotation;denotation;decodification; pluricodic discourse;film;language;message;sign;gesture; mimics;sense;

The main objective of this study resides in addressing the film (French comedy) as a semiotic system – signs that are used in the process of message production and interpretation and as an interference of codes that govern the use of these signs. The message of a film is a combination of signs that produces the sense when interacting with the receiver. The more we share the same codes and the same sign system, the closer will the significances attributed to the message be. The multitude of codes and the indefinite variety of contexts and circumstances make it possible for the same message to be decoded from different perspectives and by reference to different convention systems. The interpretative codes make way to multiple connotations by means of accessing perceptive and ideological sub-codes. Language can be externalised through articulated words, gestures, through plastic and musical representations. Therefore, we can identify the following active codes in French comedies: logical, aesthetic, sensory, body, visual, iconic, chromatic, cultural. We emphasise the language creativity as a sign system by means of which it is ensured the transition from image to imaginary, from (re)presentation to the condition of (language) signs re(signification) within the limits of the imaginary imprinted in the film sequence. In an audiovisual discourse, the word does not intend to convince the receiver; instead, it intends to create an aesthetic emotion. As a sign, humour represents the object of film semiotics that creates correspondents with other specific codes. Even if verbal language is the most powerful semiotic artifice known to humans, it does not fully satisfy the principle of general expressibility and, in order to be more powerful than it already is, one has to resort to other semiotic systems.

Graphical Methods Used to Solve Misalignment Problems of Mechanical Transmissions

Author(s): Ramona-Monica Stoica,Daniela Voicu,Radu Vilău / Language(s): English / Issue: 6/2021

Keywords: misalignment; mechanical transmissions; graphic method;

This paper presents some graphical methods used to solve different misalignment problems of mechanical transmissions. For this purpose, it was created a mechanical transmission composed of an electric motor with a driving shaft, a coupling and a driven shaft mounted on two pillow block bearings. With the use of two dial indicators, there were measured both parallel and angular misalignment of the constituent elements and follow-up, it was realised a graphic display of the measured values, in order to determine the needed adjustments. Such alignment method has a high level of precision and it does not imply expensive devices. Misalignment of mechanical transmissions represents a broad issue in all factories, and the working personnel is constantly interested in ways to remedy such problems.
