Semiotics, image and narration. 12-th Early Fall School in Semiotics

Author(s): / Language(s): English

Keywords: semiotics; image; narration; media education; media literacy;

It is by now a tradition that the intellectual efforts of the participants at the Early Fall School in Semiotics (EFSS), organized annually by the Southeast Center for Semiotic Studies (SEECSS) at the New Bulgarian University, result in a collection of selected papers. The present volume in English and French is an outcome of the XIIth edition of the EFSS on "Semiotics, Image and Narration", held in 2006 in the town of Sozopol. It is formally divided into two parts, containing texts by 'guest lecturers' from our partner Universities in Finland, Italy and USA, as well as by 'local participants' - professors and students at the New Bulgarian University. From parchments to paper and from print to the internet, "the story of humankind has been written, and will be written upon its virtual walls" (Albertson, 1997). In the new millennium we are ever more surrounded by bulletin boards and computer networks, from advertisement banners to cyberspace. Nowadays humankind learns by watching rather than by reading or being lectured to. In order to be considered literate in the information age, the new literate person needs to be media literate as well as being proficient in literature and arithmetic.

Canada: A view from without

Canada: A view from without / Canada: Un regard d'ailleures

Author(s): / Language(s): English,French

Keywords: multiethnic; multicultural aspects; Canada; history; culture; literature; linguistics; teaching;

The contributions in this collection pertain to a variety of multiethnic, multilingual and multicultural aspects of Canada, epitomizing the diverse academic interests of the members of the Bulgarian Chapter of the Central European Association for Canadian Studies. The Bulgarian Chapter is one of the recent additions to the Association —formed in 2004 — but since its very inception it has proved to be a vibrant and enthusiastic society for academics, to which the present volume undeniably testifies. The papers in this volume address a broad range of topics which have been grouped according to their subject matter: history/culture, literature, linguistics, and teaching. The study of Canadian culture is seen to involve both a general introduction to various aspects of Canadiana and the close scrutiny of phenomena that belong to specific subject areas.

Europe in the 21st Century: Regional Security and the Necessary Reformsin the EU

Европа през 21 век : Регионалната сигурност и необходимите реформи в Европейския съюз

Keywords: crisis; reforms; migrants; policies; European Union; migration; reforms; international relations; security studies; environment security; education; terrorism; radicalization; multiculturalism; security; border control; EU law; corruption; crime;

The annual academic forum of National and International Security Department this year is devoted to regional security and reforms in the European Union. Foreign academics and researchers from Poland, Macedonia, Serbia, Russia and other countries are taking part in this broad forum.Why have we chosen this topic?Today, in the first quarter of the 21st century, it appears that the world is on the verge of tolerance of risks and threats. The range of these threats is enormously broad - from the danger of wars between countries and coalitions, to violence among people within states. The world is in a period of devastated global equilibrium and a slowly developing new equilibrium. The temporal distance between these two states opened a place for the manifestation of chaos.In this increasingly difficult to predict world, the European Union has not been so far under such a criticism as the present since its creation. It comes from the ultimate right and the ultimate left, pass through the center and involve more and more ideologists and representatives, even the classical left and center-right political parties. But even a glimpse of their criticism does not show a way out of the crisis. It does not show how to preserve what is valuable in politics, economics and democracy that Europeans have undoubtedly enjoyed and continue to enjoy and how to transfer it into a future European Project.

The Ancient Egyptian Story of the Shipwrecked Sailor. Morphology of Classical Egypt

Author(s): Sergei Ignatov / Language(s): English

Keywords: Ancient history; Egyptology

The main corpus of the study represents a source study of pHermitage 1115, containing the text, which describes the encounter and the discourse of an Egyptian man with a deity. The text is considered in a dialogue with the texts of the epoch, i.e. the principle is followed that in order to understand an ancient text, one has to study all the other ones that are accessible. The uniqueness of the presented papyrus lies in the fact that it contains the most ancient evidence of prayer and of sacrifice, committed without the mediation of priests and is the most ancient story, describing a meeting of a man with a deity, without the human deserting his body. As compared to other religious texts, mentioning similar encounters in the process of the transformation into the hereafter, in pHermitage 1115 the Egyptian crosses the south-eastern boundary of the inhabited world and finds himself in the realm of the deity. Traditionally, the text is considered to be the most ancient specimen of adventure literature, but a careful analysis discloses, that it is an esoteric text, which describes mechanisms for trespassing the Worlds, throws light on the nature of the deity and its world, and guides the human beings by instructing them as to how to conduct themselves under such extraordinary situations. And most importantly, the papyrus reveals the image of Egypt such as it appears in the eyes of the Egyptian and of the deity.

This is the presumption of this book. The founder of Egyptology, Jean-Francois Champollion, once wrote: “In such inquiries one can progress with the help of facts only, and monuments are the only reliable facts... ” This is perhaps the best definition of Egyptological studies: patient and conscientious study of the monuments of ancient Egypt. The monuments of ancient Egyptian culture are located primarily in the Nile valley. The evidence of Egyptian penetration far south into ancient Nubia, ancient Syria, Phoenicia and Palestine to the east, imported Egyptian artifacts in the eastern Mediterranean lands, are also of interest to Egyptology. ...

The fifth volume, the last of the Under the shadow of Stalin and Hitler series dedicated to the fate of the European nationas during Stalin's alliance with Hitler, describes the military coup in Belgrade, the preparations for the attack and destruction of Yugoslavia, the occupation regime in Belgium, the surrender of Greece, the bargain for the new boundaries of Southeastern Europe, the anti-British uprising in Iraq, and Stalin's decision to take over the post of a leader of the Soviet Union, the fall of Crete, Hitler's talks with Boris III, Ante Pavelic and Ion Antonescu, and the German Declaration of War against Russia. In the final "Conclusions and lessons", the author shares: "Without the Soviet-Nazi Alliance created by the Nazy-Soviet Pact of August 23, 1939, World War II in Europe would never have erupted. This alliance predetermines the position of forces on a global scale for the next half century. The ultimate winner of World War II is Stalin. The strategic winner, however, is the United States, but democracy will fully realize its victory only with the fall of the Berlin Wall on 9 November 1989 and the end of Communism in Eastern Europe. Keywords: World War II (WWII); Invasion of Poland; Non-aggression Pact; Soviet-Nazi Alliance; Wehrmacht attack

What is World War II? When does it start? These, seemingly, easy to answer questions have a surprisingly too many diverse answers. Compared to Word War I, the later is subject to much more unpopular views, in both, public and specialized literature.There are too many distortions, subjectivism and deliberate concealment of basic facts. Many are convinced that World War II in Europe started with Germany's attack on Poland, while in reality Poland has been invaded at least 17 days in advance from Germany and then from Russia. For example, few know that the Soviet-Nazi Alliance, signed with the Non-aggression Pact on 23 August 1939, began to act as the closest combat co-operation in the first hours of the invasion of the "Wehrmacht" on September 1.

Keywords: World War II (WWII); Invasion of Denmark and Norway; Seize of Luxembourg; Belgium and the Netherlands; Occupation of France; Italy's intervention; Neutrality of Ireland and Switzerland; Winston Churchil (30.11.1874-24.01.1965)

The period after the North or Winter War between Soviet Union and Finland was shorter than a month, but allowed the Soviet-Nazy Alliance to regroup and better plan their strategy of invading Europe. While the public interest was still focused on the situation in Poland, allies freely expanded the front line, whereas Germany seized Denmark, Luxembourg, Belgium and the Netherlands, and the culmination of their campaign - the occupation of Norway and France; and Russia took full control of the Baltics, after crossing over Lithuania. Some European countries to escape worse fate declared neutrality. The paralysis of Europe and the inability of the European governments to react and take adequate measures against this aggression seemed as the end of Europe and democratic ruling. At that period, Winston Churchill became a Prime Minister of the United Kingdom and nobody could envision how significant influence his policy will have and lead to a turnabout on the global political scene.

Frustrated by the rapid Soviet expansion, the German leader brutally enforces his decision on Hungary's claims for Transylvania, annexing that part, while guarantying the sovereignty of the rest of the Romanian territory, triggering sharp reactions from Soviet Union side.

It is hard to perceive modern world without knowing the history of the European countries in the twentieth century to be remembered as the bloodiest century in the history. Most significant events at the time took place on the European continent. Europe has turned over the last hundred years from the cradle of the Judeo-Christian civilization, democracy and humanism into a proving ground for the most sinister ideologies - Russian Communism, German National Socialism and Italian Fascism. With Stalin's victory over Hitler in World War II, Europe not only lost its leading role in human progress, but also remained on the periphery of the Soviet empire. Only the fall of the Berlin Wall and the "gentle revolutions" of the end of 1989 gave Europeans a new chance to unite and take a decent place in world civilization progress, but the problems and challenges Europe is facing can be resolved in a more efficient way, if we know our past better.

Ethnic Origin and National Self-consciousness

Народностно потекло и национално самосъзнание

Author(s): Plamen Tzvetkov / Language(s): Bulgarian

Keywords: Origin; Ancestry; Ethnogenesis; Ethnicity; Ethnic self-awareness; Nationality; Nationalism; Identity; Community formation; Group dynamics; Cultural myths; Historical and cultural background; Historical development; Bulgarians;

Sense of nationality continues to be extremely powerful, and in today's globalized world, is getting even stronger. At first glance, the most obvious sign of the nation's community are language and origin, but too many nations seem to have no common ancestry, or even using only one language. Moreover, the most violent clashes burst out between people, professing the same religion and belonging more or less to the same culture. What makes most people to anticipate their national affiliations as an integral element of his/her own "I", and to invent their own past to find "worthy" place for their community? What can cause an ethno-national community or at least its elite to deny their relationship with another nation and to claim themselves as belonging to a completely different community, deliberately ignoring the "uncomfortable" facts? The purpose of this book is to make a critical review of some deep-rooted cliches and generally accepted axioms. The Bulgarian, Balkan and Slavic national passions are considered in the context of ethnogenesis and the formation of European nations and the world.

Myth and mythology may be defined as an attempt of the human being to put some order in the way of perceiving the surrounding world that appears as chaos. However, those who want to justify their absolute power by a simple and self-evident explanation can easily manipulate this longing for myths, the more so as myth is also a kind of fairy tale. On the other hand, a lie is never hundred percent untrue: it is a combination of obvious facts with half-truths and with sheer untruths.

Светът през XX век

Author(s): Plamen Tzvetkov / Language(s): Bulgarian

Keywords: Modern History; Colonialism; Revolutionary acts; Nationalism; Stalin; Hitler; Collectivism; Capitalism; Democracy; Parliamentarianism; European Union integration; NATO; Dictates in XX Century

Ignorance towards world history can lead to severe distortions in the national psyche. Even today, Bulgarians either rejoice as the greatest nation, surrounded by enemies, for some reason, or as a hopelessly lagging nation. The book offers the most fateful events and processes from the history of mankind in the twentieth century. During this century, people entered space, found the computer but at the same time faced the threat of nuclear self-destruction and were struck by a new type of plague known as AIDS. The planet became narrow. Clothing, life-style and food are uniform. The globalization, symbolized by both McDonald's fast food and Chinese restaurants, has its furious opponents, but also enthusiastic followers. Current Handbook aims to acquaint students with those historical events and processes in the history of Europe and the world in the twentieth century that directly impact human civilization, and the beginning of the 21st century. Therefore, the approach is not typical for historical science - events and processes are not chronologically but problem-based considered.
