This publication is related to the centenary of physics at the University of Warsaw. It describes the history of optics at the university since 1921, when Stefan Pieńkowski founded the Division of Physics at 69 Hoża Street in Warsaw. The author reports on the rapid development of research and significant discoveries in this field in the interwar period, when the Division of Physics earned a reputation as a world centre for molecular luminescence and atomic spectroscopy, attracting scientists from all over the world to Warsaw. Rebuilt after World War II, it got a new image when lasers were used for studies on the structure of atoms and molecules as well as atomic collisions. Today, it has become an internationally recognised modern centre for optical physics, including nonlinear optics, Fourier optics, plasmonics and quantum technologies.

The book is an attempt to obtain the interdisciplinary insight into the musical culture of the 20th and 21st centuries through the prism of "acoustic wallpaper". The author indicates the connections between functional concepts, in which background music is an instrument of social influence (Muzak and audiomarketing), and artistic concepts (Erik Satie and musique d'ameublement, Brian Eno and ambient music) intended to create a neutral background filling the public space. This book constitutes an attempt to diagnose the basis of linguistic cognition. This diagnosis seems necessary in the face of numerous aporias present in linguistics. An inductive method was used to prepare and present the diagnosis. This method can be presented synthetically as a path from unity to analogical unity. The starting point on this path is the relational nature of being, which determines the internal structure of an individual and the relations realised by individuals within the community. The relational structure of all being is analogical, which is why all being is said to be analogical (analogia entis). The analogy of being determines not only linguistic cognition, but also linguistics as a scientific discipline. Moreover, the analogy of being necessarily implies transcendental relations in terms of both the community of individuals and the internal structure of each individual. Since both the individual and the community are real, the transcendental relations constituting them must have a real basis. This basis is not material but substantial. Thus, when linguists make inferences about a community, about the language of this community, or about the communicative behaviour of its participants, they do so precisely thanks to real transcendental relations. Consequently, when inferring about categories, such as the category of similarity, they will not avoid participation.

Today, however, some countries are experiencing democratic backsliding, with the elites fragmented or even divided. The book presents several case studies of how elites across the region have been changing. They can be instrumental in both democratization and democratic backsliding. Illiberal elites claim to represent the will of the people, which in their view is true democracy. To understand the current state of democracy, it is necessary to examine the role of the elites in this process. It is also pertinent to address the question about the origins and characteristics of the contemporary elites that threaten liberal democracy and undermine the existing consensus.

The fourth volume of the C series supplements to the Światowit yearly entitled: Pontica et Caucasica contains 15 articles divided into two sections: Causasus and Scythia et Sarmatia. The first section, Caucasus, discusses, among other things, discoveries of early metallurgy in Adjaria, as well as olive lamps and amphorae from the Roman fort of Apsaros. Two articles are devoted to the ancient city of Zalissa, identified with the modern village of Dzalisi in central Georgia. Another text discusses the role of the fortress at Petra (on the coast of Lazica) during the Persian campaign of Justinian I the Great. In the section on discoveries from areas belonging to ancient Scythia and Sarmatia, as many as three articles deal with different research projects concerning ceramics, from the Archaic to the Migration Period. There is also a presentation of the results of the latest research on the alleged Mithraeum at Tyras. Further texts discuss the epigraphic map of Tropaeum Traiani and the fortifications of Tanais in the light of geophysical research. The entire collection closes with a paper devoted to the presence of the ancient cities of Olbia and Borysthenes in Old Polish literature. It is worth noting the participation of scientists of the younger generation in the research conducted. This fact is a guarantee that Pontic archaeology will develop and the editorial team led by Marcin Matera and Radosław Karasiewicz-Szczypiorski will be able to work on further volumes presenting new archaeological discoveries from the Black Sea region.

Bank Gospodarstwa Krajowego is an important institution in the domestic financial system. The scope of tasks entrusted to it led to a decision to regulate some issues related to its functioning by means of a separate act, introducing solutions of lex specialis nature concerning banks operating on commercial principles. The monograph, as one of the first on the market, presents domestic legal solutions contained in the Act of 14 March 2003 on Bank Gospodarstwa Krajowego, their analysis and an assessment of the legitimacy of their functioning in the context of the lex specialis rule, also in the aspect of foreign solutions. The author also reviews other universally applicable provisions of domestic law, in particular the Banking Law Act, as well as the legal solutions functioning at the level of the European Union and the internal law of selected European Union member states with regard to the functioning of BGK.
