Summary/Abstract: The article discusses the problem of the so-called washback effect in assessment in connection with Bulgarian Language Teaching. A review of Bulgarian, English and Russian specialists’ views about this notion is presented. The advantages and disadvantages of the washback effect by the Assessment in Bulgarian Language Teaching are explained and illustrated by examples from the National External Assessment in Secondary school. To increase positive and decrease negative washback effect there is a need of empirical studies connected with the Bulgarian experience in the classroom and at the National External Assessment.
