- Summary/Abstract:Bearing in mind the pronounced climate changes, the future tourism development must be in line with sustainable development. This is especially important given predictions that tourism will not meet its sustainable development goals by 2030 and threatens to become one of the main polluters. Considering that tourism’s contribution to economic development is expected to increase, as well as reduce pollution, smart development of this sector is necessary. Smart tourism implies the use of smart technologies, such as AI, Big Data, IoT, Blockchain and various data analysis techniques in line with sustainable development. The goal of this chapter is precisely the application of these technologies in the future development of tourism. The Kruskall-Wallis test showed a significant lag in the sustainable development of WBs tourism compared to tourism developed countries. It is the result of insufficient digitalization of this sector, that can contribute to sustainable development.

- Summary/Abstract:Today, not only manufacturers, products and brands compete with each other, but also countries, regions, cities and tourist destinations too. While products compete for consumers, cities compete for tourists, investors, skilled labor, talented students etc. This competition is not only taking place within the borders of a country, but is increasingly moving to an international level. This competition requires marketing expertise and the correct use of marketing tools that enable cities and tourist destinations to build and maintain their competitiveness and positive image. The intensification of competition requires more conscious and thoughtful marketing policy and strategy, where Smart City and Smart Tourism technologies and solutions are also becoming more and more important. Cities and tourist destinations that have introduced various smart solutions have been able to use them in several cases as a tool for urban and tourism marketing. The city of Novi Sad has done the same, and these solutions will be presented in this paper. The data for this research was collected from academic articles and from various official documents and relevant websites.

- Summary/Abstract:This chapter aims to analyse the impact crisis on the relevance of the three pillars of sustainability for hospitality management students, as future managers in the hotel industry. The study examines their views during two major global shocks: the COVID-19 pandemic and the war in Ukraine. Using context theory and ordinal logistic regression, it explores whether proximity to the crisis and gender influence the perceived importance of sustainability pillars. Findings show that crises significantly shape sustainability perceptions, particularly reinforcing the relevance of the social dimension. Gender and geographical proximity to the crisis also influenced attitudes. A key limitation is the cultural homogeneity of respondents, as data was collected from a single top-ranked international hotel school. However, its multi-campus structure helps limit geographic bias. The study highlights the need to integrate sustainability more deeply into hospitality education.

- Summary/Abstract:This chapter examines the development of tourism and its economic significance in a sample of five Western Balkan (WB) countries and five neighboring European Union (EU) countries over the period of 2010–2020. Through an advanced comparative statistical analysis of trends in the tourism industry within these two groups, the research identifies a significant driving influence of tourism on economic development for both regions. The findings indicate that the impact of tourism on economic growth is more pronounced in the WB countries, particularly those with a lower per capita gross domestic product. The analysis also highlights the severe impact of the global COVID-19 pandemic in 2020, which led to a marked decline in all key tourism development parameters.

- Summary/Abstract:This chapter has two main objectives: first, to evaluate the impact of fiscal spending on economic activity across a broad sample of 47 countries, and second, to examine how economic inequality and tourism dependence shape the size of fiscal multipliers. To achieve these goals, a time series VAR model and a panel VAR model are employed, utilizing a dataset covering the period 1995-2021. The key findings of our empirical analysis are as follows. First, fiscal multipliers are predominantly positive in 31 countries. Second, the average fiscal multiplier is higher in countries that rely more heavily on tourism. Third, countries with more pronounced income and wealth inequality tend to exhibit larger fiscal multipliers, with the effect of wealth inequality being particularly pronounced in tourism-oriented economies. These findings support the hypothesis that greater economic inequality amplifies the effects of government spending, both generally and in the case of countries with a stronger reliance on tourism.

- Summary/Abstract:Tourism has its place in Slovakia, it is one of the dynamically developing industries. It brings many benefits to the country. Tourism not only in Slovakia but also in many other countries was affected by the COVID-19 pandemic in 2019-2020. However, starting in 2021, there is a visible boom in this industry. The main goal of the contribution is to evaluate the development of selected indicators of the tourism industry in Slovakia in the period 2017-2023. This study utilizes quantitative methods to analyze tourism intensity in Slovakia from 2017 to 2023, focusing on three primary tourism indicators: the Defert Index, Tourism Intensity Rate, and Schneider Index. Data were sourced from the Statistical Office of the Slovak Republic, and four key tourism indicators were analyzed: the number of accommodation establishments, the number of overnight stays by visitors, accommodation revenues, and average accommodation prices. Additionally, regression analysis is used to examine the influence of external factors on tourism, particularly focusing on: The relationship between fuel prices (gasoline and diesel) and the number of domestic visitors and the correlation between the average monthly salary and the number of overnight stays by domestic tourists. With increasing tourism intensity and regional potential, especially in underdeveloped areas, Slovakia’s tourism sector has shown resilience and a slow recovery from the COVID-19 crisis. This underscores the need for ongoing infrastructure investment, product diversification, and targeted marketing to support balanced and sustainable regional development.

- Summary/Abstract:This chapter examines the branding of Istria as a “Green Mediterranean” destination through a qualitative study involving focus groups with international and domestic tourists. The research explores tourists’ perceptions of Istria’s brand identity, key motivations for visiting, and the effectiveness of current promotional strategies. Findings suggest that Istria is widely perceived as an authentic Mediterranean escape with a unique green, sustainable appeal, often compared to Tuscany, with strong associations with gastronomy, nature, and cultural heritage. Culinary and wine experiences were highlighted as key attractions, while challenges such as seasonality, decreased affordability for certain tourist segments, and transportation limitations were noted. The study also reveals that younger travelers predominantly discover Istria through social media and digital influencers, rather than traditional branding campaigns. These insights emphasize the need for an adaptive branding approach that leverages experiential marketing and digital storytelling to enhance Istria’s global positioning as a premium “Green Mediterranean” destination.

This paper explores the intersection of food safety practices and the needs of tourists with food allergies and food hypersensitivity (FH) in Serbian hospitality. Drawing on a qualitative study involving interviews with individuals affected by food allergy challenges across tourist destinations in Serbia, the findings highlight persistent allergen management. The research identifies key barriers to effective allergen management, including incomplete safety protocols, variability in operational practices, and limited knowledge among employees. These challenges undermine efforts to prevent cross-contamination and compromise the safety of hypersensitive consumers. Strengthening food safety protocols and allergen awareness, standardizing practices, and enhancing staff training are essential strategies for fostering a more inclusive and trustworthy hospitality environment in Serbia.

- Summary/Abstract:To define sustainable behavior in hotels—particularly regarding the reduction of prejudice toward tourists from the Balkans—a socio-psychological model provides a valuable framework. This model considers the interplay between individual attitudes, social context, and direct interpersonal contact. This study investigates the hypothesis that interactions between tourists and tourism employees can evolve into meaningful social contact, acting as a mechanism for reducing even deeply ingrained biases. Conducted over two years (2022–2024) in seven Austrian hotels, the study involved 479 tourists from Serbia and Bosnia and Herzegovina and 117 hotel employees. A longitudinal mixed-method approach was applied. Employee attitudes were assessed in two phases: prior to tourist arrival using the Thurstone Attitude Scale, and after departure using the Bogardus Social Distance Scale. Exploratory Factor Analysis of pre-contact data revealed six key prejudice dimensions—Antagonism, Animosity, Conflict, Arrogance, Indecency, and Criminogenicity. Post-contact results showed a measurable reduction in social distance, supporting the idea that structured contact over time facilitates attitude change. These findings reinforce the role of tourism as a catalyst for intercultural understanding and socially sustainable behavior in hospitality.
