Summary/Abstract: The anthology “Sources and actors - new studies of the Yugoslav wars of the 1990s” emerged from the research of young scientists, mostly historians, who deal with various aspects of Yugoslav and post-Yugoslav history. The motivation for the collection lies primarily in the evident lack of quality research on one of the darkest and most painful episodes of our past. Avoidance of the study of the Yugoslav wars at the end of the 20th century can undoubtedly be explained by the sensitivity of the topic, by the complex political situation still dominated by the ideas and people that led to the wars, by conformism and by scientific escapism. However, while this can be explained, it can hardly be justified. More than 30 years have passed since the outbreak of the Yugoslav wars, and justifications for avoiding an honest and scientifically based approach to many topics from that era are untenable.

- Summary/Abstract:This paper provides an overview of the most important sources for studying the Yugoslav wars of the 1990s. The most important collection of sources is undoubtedly court archives, especially the ICTY archive, which contains tens of thousands of documents, photographs, maps, videos and material evidence. Reports of international and domestic organizations and institutions are also presented, particularly valuable for the study of war crimes and other forms of wartime violence. As a particularly interesting and useful source, the media, textbooks and other sources are presented, from which much useful information important for this topic can also be extracted. At the end, the specifics of memoir material and oral history when used as historiographical sources were also analysed.

- Summary/Abstract:The archive of the International Criminal Tribunal for the former Yugoslavia is rich in sources that historians can use to research a decade flooded with history, such were the 1990s in the former Yugoslavia. Through the analysis of two first-instance verdicts of the Hague Tribunal (on Momčil Perišić and Ante Gotovina), this paper shows how historians can refer to documents that are not legally binding to reconstruct various events from the nineties and notes that, although some first-instance verdicts were overturned by the appeals chambers of the ICTY, the facts established by them are no less credible.

- Summary/Abstract:The weekly magazine Time, launched in 1923 in New York, revolutionized the way news was told and presented in various fields, shaping the attitudes of its readers for decades. The research presented in this paper aimed to analyze the content that appeared in this American magazine about the wars in the former Yugoslavia from 1991 to 1995. The articles of this magazine were analyzed taking into account not only the accuracy of the events reported, but also the way in which Time combined historical tropes, classic journalistic reporting and the geopolitical circumstances in which it framed the conflict, and created and presented war narratives, thus becoming one of the crucial interpreters of the Yugoslav wars.

- Summary/Abstract:During the second half of the 20th century in the science of literature, under the influence of structural linguistics, formalistic approaches to narrative texts flourished. One of the directions that arose under the influence of structuralism is narratology, which was established as a tendency that strives for immanent criticism of narrative texts, rejecting everything that is outside the text itself. Supporters of this tendency in literary science have developed a theoretical apparatus that can be applied to any type of narrative text, with the aim of its detailed formal analysis. The paper applies the elements of narratology to the war coverage of the daily Politika on the siege of Vukovar from August to November 1991.

- Summary/Abstract:The paper presents and analyzes the visit of the Peace Caravan of European citizens, an anti-war action carried out from 25 to 30 September 1991 on the territory of the Yugoslav state, at that time the scene of hostilities. Besides presenting its course, focus is placed on presenting the reaction of intellectuals and politicians to this peace campaign, which at the same time reflected their attitudes towards the concepts of pacifism and anti-militarism. A new viewpoint on this initiative is provided by the use of sources such as the press and especially the memories of contemporaries and direct witnesses of events through the application of oral history methods.

- Summary/Abstract:This paper makes a comparative analysis of the actions of the UN Security Council regarding international interventions in the cases of Bosnia and Herzegovina and Kosovo. These events made a decisive contribution to fueling the debate in the 1990s about humanitarian interventions and their legality and legitimacy in cases of threats to the peace, breaches of the peace and aggression. At the time of the interventions in BiH and Kosovo, the principle of R2P (Responsibility to Protect), which was adopted at a session of the United Nations General Assembly in 2005 and which directly mandates intervention in cases of genocide, war crimes and crimes against humanity, was not in force. However, the essence of the R2P principle was even then the direction in which the logic of international humanitarian interventions moved. On the other hand, the adoption of the R2P principle can also be seen as a consequence of the problems that arose during the interventions in BiH and Kosovo, which indicated the necessity of expanding the powers of the UN Security Council (SC) beyond Chapter VII of the United Nations Charter. The problem of humanitarian intervention is dealt with primarily through the use of United Nations documents, a specific type of historical source.
