Summary/Abstract: Four preserved masses of the still little known Polish composer, Otton Mieczysław Żukowski (1867–1942) have been discussed in this study. The masses include: Msza polska (The Polish Mass) op. 38, Trzecia msza polska (the Third Polish Mass) op. 50 up to the lyrics of Henryk Odyniec, Czwarta msza polska (the Fourth Polish Mass) op. 41 up to the lyrics of Maria Konopnicka and only the Introit of Piąta msza polska (the Fifth Polish Mass) op. 81, preserved in the Lviv National Vasyl Stefanyk Scientific Library of Ukraine. These songs, designed for a monodic or choir performance, were in fact mass songs, which corresponded to the ordinary (ordinarium missae) and proper (proprium missae) liturgy. The performance of the songs in the Polish language strengthened the sense of national identity in the times when Poland did not exist in a geographical sense on the European map, and became a natural carrier of religious contents, contributing to the foundation of the truths of the Church.
