Conceptual Approaches in Explaining the Change in the Type of Reproductive Behaviour

Summary/Abstract: On the basis of voluninous survey of publications on the discussed subject the author sets herself the aim to analyse the most widely spread main explanatory concepts characteristic of demographic transition in the developed countries. Of the compositional elements of reproductive behaviour special attention is paid to the motivation for giving birth to certain number of children because in its interpretation there appears a border line between two basic explanatory concepts: Instrumental and Terminal. The author impartially attempts at comparing and evaluating the "pro" and "con" arguments in the two approaches coming to the conclusion that there are not enough scientific arguments to entirely reject the instrumental approach as well as to accept wholly the terminal one. The conclusion to get rid of some extreme views on the subject and to include the analysis of some new essential factors, which have been left without attention, is well argued. On the ground of new analysis the author motivates a interdisciplinary approach to explaining the change and the type of reproductive behaviour. The interest in the discused issue is not only of theoretical but also of practically applied importance.
