Summary/Abstract: The subject of the study concerns the changes of the high fertility level of the married couples during the 85 year period since 1906. The objective of the author is on the basis of the studied continuous time series and structure changes a periodical classification of the transition to new reproductive behaviour to be suggested. The study has a scientific and a pragmatic meaning as well. The information is got from the demographic statistics and covers 85 years. The basic methodology concerns several issues. The time series are presented by 5 years' weighted mean of fertility; the main criterium is the high fertility level change; an additional criterium is the change of the mean fertility rate; the total ferility rate is classified according to its level as high, moderate and low. It is underlined in the same time that each classification is of relative importance. On the basis of this option four periods are defined: from 1906—10 to 1921—25; from 1926—30 to 1941—45; from 1946—50 to 1966—70 and from 1971—75 to 1986—90. Each of these periods is a potentional determinant of the presently dominated fertility pattern. The four period fertility development is presented in graphs by urban/rural residence. The most significant conclusion is that the demographic transition in Bulgaria is performed at a fast rate in short time; the fastest fertility declining is assigned to the married couples; than there are changes of the concept of multy children parenthood; the many children families are actually oriented to a moderate number of children. The all evidences confirm the demographic transition performance and the reproductive behaviour. The urban and rural dimensions following a similar trend differ by rate.
