Summary/Abstract: Written sources provide abundant evidence of relationships among languages, ethnic groups and cultures. Theyreflect people’s everyday lives and their cultural thinking. A source constitutes a very important testimony to the development of the society, documenting and evoking the dynamic of economic, legal, cultural and religious life and the community’s set of values. The intensity and scope of this cultural thinking and communication can be explained in the context of a systematic study into older as well as more recent written records. Such documents are not only used by historians to interpret factual data about the past, but they are also an important source of knowledge for philologists, theologians, ethnologists and researchers in other scientific fields. They emphasis the importance of research into the community’s views on the values of the past, on events, prominent figures and occurrences influencing the community’s self-awareness. The essence of this is therefore captured by the value system that is applied in comparison with close and distant neighbours. The knowledge of the value system of the national culture and its intercultural relations is based on examining how the national language and culture are linked to other languages and cultures. It is a unique source conveying a comprehensive and synergistic view on the development of the national society, which forms a part of the European civilization founded on unity in diversity. Our study focuses especially on current research results and the publication of source texts from the Byzantine-Slavonic tradition in Slovakia and to the south of the Carpathians. The emphasis will be placed on the interethnic and intercultural communication between the Slavic East and West.
