Summary/Abstract: Synthetic cathinones belong to a large group of new psychoactive substances. Since 2010, when they became widespread, they are, together with synthetic cannabinoids, the most progressively growing subgroup of addictive substances. New variants appear on drug markets every year and are highly popular among users. Among the synthetic cathinones is α-pyrrolidinovalerophenone (α-PVP), toxicologically known as ‚flakka‘ or ‚gravel‘ and characterised by its white or pinkish crystals. It is characterised by central nervous system stimulant effects that are more intense than those of amphetamine or cocaine. Intoxication with α-PVP is accompanied by a range of harmful psychiatric and somatic symptoms including hallucinations, aggression, violent behaviour, hyperthermia, tachycardia, cardiovascular events and others. Seizures of α-PVP have been reported from all over the world, particularly the United States (especially Florida), the United Kingdom, Germany, Spain, Scandinavia and Asia. European Union Member States, including the Czech Republic, have included α-PVP on their national lists of banned substances after 2016, as have the United States, Australia and China (where it has controlled substance status).
