Summary/Abstract: Substances affecting the cholinergic system of living beings constitute a large group of remarkable compounds. The article discusses the biological effects of selected substances of natural origin, which are currently widely used in human medicine, especially in the treatment of neurological diseases, but are potentially usable in a variety of non-medical applications. The authors' attention was focused on the different biochemical mechanisms of action of the studied substances in the cholinergic system, specifically the direct inhibition of cholinesterases as well as the cholinergic and anticholinergic effects of these natural compounds. From the point of view of further research and applications, the biochemical analogy of these types of substances and psychoactive substances is of particular interest.
