Summary/Abstract: The project of compiling the Dictionary of Montenegrin National and Literary Language was started by the Montenegrin Academy in 2011 with the official decision of the Presidency of the Academy and the establishment of the Council for Compiling the Dictionary which decided that the dictionary should be the treasury of different functional styles as well as the slowly disappearing and specific Montenegrin vernacular forms. It was, also, decided that the future five-volume Dictionary of the Montenegrin National and Literary Language belongs to the category of descriptive dictionaries of medium volume. The authors were working on the Dictionary, as it is usual in such complex and important projects, gradually and in phases. The first volume of the Dictionary, comprising 12 018 units, was published in March 2016 and immediately it provoked violent reactions and critically intoned reports in the controlled, regime media. The number of negative articles about the Dictionary in a short period approached the three-digit number, which unequivocally indicates a well-designed and organized chase with a clear goal and purpose. This paper shows how the chase mechanism works, who orders it, who performs it, to whom it has brought benefit, and to who suffered irreparable damage.
