Summary/Abstract: Dušan Makavejev is a politically engaged director – most of his films have a critical message against the prevailing ideology. In this message, thematic and stylistic references to the circus art often play a key role. Makavejev gives circus the meaning of an ironically ambiguous political allegory. Such a relationship between politics and circus can be seen best in his feature debut Man Is Not a Bird (1965) and in his feature-length documentary essay Innocence Unprotected (1968).
