Концепцията на проф. Марин Дринов за новобългарския книжовен език

Author(s): Nadezhda Nikolova / Language(s): Bulgarian Issue: 1-2/2015

Marin Drinov was one of the first Bulgarian scientists that continues and enriches the tradition born during the Bulgarian national revival of developing the Bulgarian literary language by analyzing it on a broad scientific basis and at the level of the philological scientific thought of his time. What impresses in his concept on the Bulgarian literary language was his ability to summarize and analyze vast factual material, and with a brief expression to characterize the multidimensional and complex linguistic phenomena and processes. The scientist and educator in practice took a lot of care and effort to make the correct device of our speech and of unified spelling. The philological studies of Marin Drinov were precious and they were a part of the new Bulgarian language history. They were directly related to those processes and phenomena that led to the realization of the necessity of a unified standardized and codified language system which represented and defined the literary language characteristics of the nation.

„Дигитален архив Марин Дринов“ – резултати и перспективи

Author(s): Tsvetana Velichkova / Language(s): Bulgarian Issue: 1-2/2015

One of the first projects of the Science Archive at the Bulgarian Academy of Sciences is the “Digital Archive Marin Drinov” (http://www.math.bas.bg/digi/drinov/archiv.html). It was realized in cooperation with the department of Applied Information Technologies in the Humanities at the Institute of Mathematics and Computer Science, Bulgarian Academy of Sciences. The project began back in 2006 with the scanning of 24 archival units (176 facsimiles of manuscripts, 14 printings and 15 black and white photos) from fond № 104K of the Science Archive. It is worth mentioning that the digitalization of a personal archival fond is the first of its kind in Bulgaria with respect to the technological, methodological, and classification merits of the digitalized information. The future plans of the team that undertook this project are closely related to the systematic updating of published information, in terms of quantity and thematic content, with documents reflecting the life and work of M. Drinov which are kept in the fonds of the Science Archive. This project is still viable in 2014, a year marking the 145th anniversary of the Bulgarian Literary Society (now the Bulgarian Academy of Sciences.)

Видинският Варош и канун-и серхад (към отношенията между християни и мюсюлмани на османската военна граница през първата половина на ХVІІІ в.)

Author(s): Svetlana Ivanova / Language(s): Bulgarian Issue: 3-4/2015

The relations between Christians and Muslims and between their social structures in Vidin in the 18th century are in the focus of the study and its cornerstone is a key Ottoman document from 1719. The case leads to the consequences of the war between the Ottomans and the Holy League (1683–1699), the devastation of Vidin and radical change of its urban structure, accompanied by a reallocation of the population. Vidin once again became part of the military border (“serhad“), the Ottomans finished building a new fortress around the city in about 1722. The soldiers there were Janissaries. They sent to the Porte a statement asking the government to make the Christians sell their properties and move out of the fortress. The argument is that everybody has to comply with the requirements of the law of the military border “kanun-i serhad“ and it does not allow Christians to remain in the fortress; the houses of the Christian Raya must be sold without violence through an auction organized by the kadi court of military officers from the garrisons and other Muslims. Then the article focuses on the main issues examined on the base of Ottoman documents and in comparison with the situation in other towns in today’s Bulgarian lands: the impact that the events of the late seventeenth century and the first quarter of the eighteenth century had on the urban planning of Vidin and the distribution of the confessional groups in it; basic social personages, related to the case; Varosh as intra-urban toponym, but also as an institution intermediary between the Ottoman Empire and the Christian citizenship in Vidin; the acute „fight“ for the possession of the land in Vidin and its region; possible interpretations of the phrase „kanun-i serhad“ and legal administrative practices it stood for. The study of these issues will allow us to reveal the mutual influence between the location of the 18th century Ottoman Vidin on the border of the empire and its urban, confessional, and social structure.

Парадигмата за дара: поглед към научните концепции, направления и школи в етнологията и културната антропология

Author(s): Galin Georgiev / Language(s): Bulgarian Issue: 3/2016

The topic of the gift in its various cultural, socio -economic, religious and so forth dimensions is for a long time in the focus of the scientific attention and has been a permanent research object in the field of humanities; the topic constantly excites and provokes. To review such a world-wide topic in humanities and from the point of view of its century-old presence and the engagement of scientific huminaries and thinkers such as Claude Levi-Strauss, Jacques Derrida, Emile Benveniste, Vyacheslav Ivanov or Aron Gurevich rather than of its specific aspect or data from personal, „unknown“ field, is the challenge before this paper. The natural motive of such review (no matter how much distant it is from the orderly and consistent final result) is to trace the development and outline the fulcrums of the main theories dedicated to the gift and the exchange of gifts in ethnology and cultural anthropology. On the one hand, although more sketchily, this review is necessary in relation to their place and role for the formation of more general postulates and trends in these disciplines. On the other hand, they are examined as a separate aradigm departing from the field of study of these two disciplines but also drawing them near (together with topics such as magic, totem, taboo) a broad circle of ideas and imaginations intrinsic to man in general.

Дирята на възрожденците енциклопедисти от Сливенско в българския обществен живот, родната и европейската наука на XIX век

Author(s): Ivanka Deneva / Language(s): Bulgarian Issue: 6/2017

Paying tribute to the individual personalities, interests and scientific focuses, the purpose of the study is to look for the unifying contacts between the spiritual giants Dr. Petar Beron (1799 – 1871), Dr. Ivan Seliminski (1799 – 1866) and Dr. Georgi Mirkovich (1826 – 1905) – using the “parallel approach” in the review and evaluation of their contributions to the Enlightenment, public and research areas for the benefit of the Fatherland and Sliven region and to European science of XIX century. The grounds for the selection of the topic are set out and the writers from the Bulgarian national revival are compared with their activities in time (considering the specific differences, quests and everyone’s activities) in their: – similarity of ideas and the type of activity in the public and scientific fields; belonging to the nearby “time period” of the formation of their character and work of altruistic nature; in the similar human field of the medics; in affinity for books and knowledge as higher values; in the state of mind and abilities of theoretical thinking and working in the field of Bulgarian and directions of European science of XIX century; in charitable activities to support the Bulgarian schools, community centers, hospitals and education of talented young people; and especially in “the synthesizing difference”: consistent dedication and sacrificial participation in the national liberation causes for gaining autonomy and political freedom of our country in the times of Ottoman rule. The study highlights the kinship goals and practical results in individual areas and their overall public activity, determined by:– higher education in universities of Europe; knowledge of Greek and Latin cultural heritage, political liberal views of the XVIII and XIX century and the achievements of Western “natural sciences”; the availability of personal cognitive and creative potential to become agents of change in the Bulgarian spiritual and social life – in unison with Renaissance European ideas of time by: radical reforms in Bulgarian schools and educational science (textbooks, organization and methods of the learning process) as well as building the foundations of health care (and Dr. G. Mirkovich laid the foundations of municipal management and finance); willingness to work hard, to sacrifice their health, money and life for public causes for independent ecclesiastical and national self-determination and cultural prosperity of the Bulgarians; the brilliance of scientific perspicacity and opportunities for “theoretical systematization” shown in the efforts to write and publish research works in Bulgarian and the main European languages, that presented their contribution to the scientific life by their will and dedication to the work of the scientist-researcher. The analysis of these areas justified in this work the thesis for their brightest track as prominent builders of “origins” in Bulgarian Revival and encyclopedists, who created independent and original research systems, concepts and intertwined their tracks in the spiritual revival of the Fatherland and the science of Europe from the middle XIX century.

ЗАСЕЛВАНЕТО НА БЪЛГАРИ В СОЛУН ПРЕЗ ХІХ И НАЧАЛОТО НА ХХ век

Author(s): Yura Konstantinova / Language(s): Bulgarian Issue: 1/2017

The text analyses the settlement of Bulgarians in Thessaloniki and raises the question about their number. It compares data from different surveys, in order to emphasize the problems with the census. The study aims to explain why the Bulgarians remained an “invisible” community for a long time. The reason for the contradictory information from different surveys is the difference in the criterions of the officials. Nevertheless, it is certain that the Bulgarian presence in Thessaloniki in the first half of the 19th century was significant. It continued to strengthen during the period before the Balkan Wars, because of the constant flow of Bulgarian population from the small and medium-sized towns towards Thessaloniki.

In the article, the author seeks the interrelation between two historic processes that seem to be independent of each other – the final conquest of the North Caucasus by the Russian army in the years after the Crimean War and the events that led to the Bulgarian liberation in 1878. The “linking point” between these two processes is the massive resettlement of the Circassian tribes from the Northwest Caucasus within the Ottoman Empire, including the Bulgarian lands under Ottoman rule – a resettlement that occupies an important place in the policy of the Russian rulers not only with regard to the Caucasus region but also against the Ottoman Empire and its possessions in the Balkans.

Зараждане, особености и основоположници на турския национализъм и зависимостта му от ислямски стереотипи: от младоосманците до Ататюрк

Author(s): Plamen Ivanov / Language(s): Bulgarian Issue: 5-6/2016

Turkish nationalism is the ideology of the young Turks, through which they want to replace the “ideology” of the Ottoman Empire, built mainly on Islamic religion, and the imperial form of statehood. They aspire and succeed in consolidating nationalism as the official doctrine of the new republic and forming a new society. The Young Turks, along with the Kemalists, as well as nationalism, resort to secularism to overturn the Ottoman world and give the new state a different nature, as well as to show it modernized to the world, but in essence they cannot escape the long-lasting tradition of their country, in which Islam was a major factor shaping its identities. The socio-political Ottoman-Turkish culture is not of a typical European and Western type, where religionism is overthrown as an essential societal factor, and since Islam initially plays such a role far beyond that of a religion, the nationalist transformation is not carried out and maintained as a typical secular one but invariably carries traits of Islamic heritage, although it also desires and perceives important European traits and concepts. In all major nationalist projects traditional stereotypes are found such as: building the new nation as only Turkish, but also Muslim; the unity of the state, resembling the unity of a Turkish “millet”; the fight against once-large ethnic minorities carried out as a fight against “hostile” non- Muslims etc. They are also found in other important projects such as the construction of nationalism itself in the new country or the institution of new citizenship, where the approach is based mainly on a common culture and language, but by default, without official emphasis, understood as Turkish-ethnic, hence with an important Islamic element in it. Thus, even Kemalism, as the last edition of Turkish nationalism, cannot but transpose and impose an approach for the country and the nation with Islamic character, i.e. in favour of the main Turkish-Islamic social group in it, but in clear harm to the non-Islamic groups. Nevertheless, Kemalism, including as nationalism, has given to the country as much as possible a secular, pro-European, and pro-Western character since the time of the Ottoman Empire, while its impugnment over the last decade by the new strong tendency of political Islam in power poses a serious challenge and threat.
