The article is dedicated to a life period of the great German philosopher G.W.F. Hegel when he actively carried out journalistic and editing activities in Bamberg. In this context, the authors think of the matter of journalism and press as a choice and vocation, as well as of media and its role in the historical shift. To some extent, we could say that Hegel’s work as a journalist and publicist traces the image of the journalese profession as a reasoning and standpoint about freedom, history, national identity, communication with personalities of historical importance and active influence in politics. Media is an inseparable part of Modern World, and everyone who are engaged in it as journalists, editors, publicists, and authors, bear the high responsibility to rethink the historical process and free actions of all the active citizens who take part in it as an aspiration for partnership or a stand on a question in a conflict. Hegel’s activity as a journalist is connected with his philosophical ideas of freedom, history, evolution, and, as such, it imposes high demands on journalese profession, still valid on this day.

Glottodydaktyka a kompetencja komunikacyjna w dobie komunikacji elektronicznej

As Internet applications and online communication become more and more popular, language teaching faces new challenges and needs. Using electronic forms of communication, our students are often able to deal with everyday problems in an efficient way, even though their language skills may not be up to the standards drawn in the CERF. Meanwhile, the lexical and grammar contents of teaching curricula and language textbooks do not always respond to the emerging needs of online communication. The purpose of this paper is to reflect on the impact of the growing interest in Internet solutions on PFL teaching practice, with reference to language level standards, teaching curricula, exam standards and textbook content, as well as student motivation level. All of these issues seem particularly important in times of pandemic, when online communication has become a necessity rather than an option.

Jestem z wami sercem i myślami. O sposobach komunikowania empatii w dyskursie (studium przypadku)

The article is a part of a more extensive linguistic project exploring the concept of ‘empathy’ and its exponents in the present-day Polish (Falkowska 2012, 2017, 2018). The analysis is based on a corpus compiled out of Polish media texts concerning the tragic Nanga Parbat expedition (January 2018). Selected Internet posts and social media comments have also been included. I focus on empathy understood along the lines set by Kuno (1987), i.e. the speaker’s identification with one of the scene’s participants, and I aim at depicting the linguistic means that are applied in order to communicate the speaker’s empathy towards a scene participant. The study employs Langacker’s Cognitive Grammar model (1987, 2009) and the cognitive discourse analysis framework (Hart 2014), with special reference to the notions of empathy, empathy hierarchy and point of view.

Użycie form adresatywnych w tekstach literackich jako odzwierciedlenie otwartości na doświadczenia

W artykule podjęta została próba zastosowania koncepcji dystansów interpersonalnych wyrażanych w tekstach literackich poprzez formy adresatywne do pomiaru stopnia otwartości na doświadczenia. Punkt wyjścia dla proponowanych rozważań stanowi teoria dystansów personalnych, dystansu psychofizycznego oraz koncepcja Carla Rogersa. Zdaniem Rogersa, otwartość na doświadczenie jest kluczem do sukcesu, gdyż organizm człowieka – pod wpływem przyswajanych nowych doświadczeń – jest w stanie szybko i elastycznie się zmieniać. W efekcie osoby o wysokim stopniu otwartości na doświadczenia wybierają sytuacje i zdarzenia pozytywnie wpływające na ich ogólny rozwój. Analiza została przeprowadzona na podstawie a podstawie dwóch dramatów współczesnych: Requiem dla gospodyni autorstwa Wiesława Myśliwskiego i Czwarta siostra autorstwa Janusza Głowackiego. Badanie miało na celu ustalenie, czy istnieje zależność pomiędzy dążeniem do zmniejszenia dystansu interpersonalnego między nadawcą i odbiorcą komunikatu a stopniem otwartości na doświadczenia. Kolejnym zadaniem badawczym była ocena skuteczności autorskiego konstruktu badawczego i odpowiedź na pytanie, czy prezentowana w niniejszym artykule koncepcja dystansów interpersonalnych może być realnie wykorzystywana w stosunku do jednostek ludzkich. Analizowane przykłady wypowiedzi bohaterów dwóch wybranych dramatów wskazują na zależność między chęcią zmniejszania dystansu interpersonalnego a stopniem otwartości na doświadczenie. // The article attempts to apply the concept of interpersonal distances expressed in literary texts through forms of address to measure the degree of openness to experience. The starting point for the proposed considerations is the theory of personal distances, psychophysical distance and the theory of Carl Rogers. According to Rogers, openness to experience is the key to success, because the human body is able to change quickly and flexibly under the influence of learned new experiences. As a result, people with a high degree of openness to experience choose situations and events that positively affect their overall development. The analysis was based on two contemporary plays: Requiem for the hostess by Wiesław Myśliwski and The Fourth Sister by Janusz Głowacki. The research aimed to determine whether there is a relationship between the desire to reduce the interpersonal distance between the sender and the recipient of the message and the degree of openness to experience. Another research task was to assess the effectiveness of the original research construct and to answer the question whether the theory of interpersonal distances presented in this article can be used in real terms in relation to individuals. The analyzed statements of the heroes of the two selected dramas indicate the correlation between the desire to reduce the interpersonal distance and the degree of openness to experience.

Artykuł stanowi próbę odpowiedzi na postawione w tytule pytanie. Puntem wyjścia jest przegląd językoznawczych koncepcji gatunku mowy o nachyleniu strukturalnym, funkcjonalnym, wreszcie kognitywnym oraz próba odniesienia kognitywnej koncepcji prototypu Ronalda Langackera do wyżej wymienionych ujęć wyrosłych na gruncie polskiej tekstologii. Jako egzemplifikacja analizowanych koncepcji gatunku służą dwie współczesne wersje o Kopciuszku. Na ich przykładzie autorzy starają się odpowiedzieć na pytanie, dlaczego należą do gatunku bajki w świetle przywoływanych koncepcji oraz co nowego, w zakresie genologii, przynieść może aplikacja koncepcji Ronalda Langackera. // The article revolves around the title question, starting with a brief overview of the major accounts of what the speech genre can possibly be in structurally, functionally-, and, finally, cognitively-oriented accounts. The latter are identified specifically with Ronald Langacker’s understanding of the prototype, and are here related/compared to the conceptions in selected Polish genre studies. The material basis and the source of exemplification are found in two modern versions of the Cinderella story. The main bulk of argumentation has to do with the research question of why, how, and to what extent these two modern versions can still be considered a Cinderella tale in the light of the respective accounts, and what new perspectives Langacker’s conception of the prototype can bring if applied to speech genre studies.

Projekt dwujęzycznego słownika językowego savoir-vivre'u

Przedmiotem artykułu jest omówienie powstającego w ramach projektu badawczego polsko-niemieckiego słownika językowego savoir-vivre’u. Przedstawione zostały założenia leksykograficzne tego słownika, źródło materiału oraz struktura hasła. Główny problem badawczy to niemiecka ekwiwalencja funkcjonalna polskich zwrotów grzecznościowych. Metodologia badań oparta jest na założeniach pragmatyki kulturowej. Autorka skupiła się na omówieniu podstawowych różnic przede wszystkim kulturowych i pragmatycznojęzykowych między polską i niemiecką grzecznością językową. Omówione zostały takie problemy, jak: różne w polszczyźnie i w niemczyźnie strategie grzecznościowe, w tym polska strategia podwładnego i strategia męskiej kurtuazji; polski i niemiecki system adresatywny; możliwość stopniowania uprzejmości w polskich aktach prośby i częstowania oraz problem niemieckiej ekwiwalencji; wpływ czynników społeczno-politycznych na funkcjonowanie form adresatywnych. Wskazano na taki dodatkowy rezultat powstania słownika, jak możliwość zrekonstruowania na jego podstawie obrazu uprzejmego Polaka i uprzejmego Niemca. Na zakończenie została sformułowana teza, że powstawanie tego typu dwujęzycznych (dwukulturowych) słowników miałoby wpływ na zoptymalizowanie komunikacji międzykulturowej. // This paper discusses a Polish-German savoir-faire dictionary, which is currently being created as part of a research project. The author presents the lexicographic framework, the source material and the structure of the entries. The main analytical problem is the German functional equivalence of Polish politeness expressions. The methodology is based on the assumptions of cultural pragmatics. The author focuses on the basic, mainly cultural and pragmalinguistic differences between Polish and German linguistic politeness. The paper discusses the following issues: the differences in Polish and German politeness strategies, including the Polish strategy of the subordinate and the strategy of male courtesy; Polish and German honorific systems; the possibility of grading politeness in the Polish speech acts of request and the offering of food as well as the problem of German equivalence; the influence of socio-political factors on the functioning of the honorific forms. The author points out that the creation of this dictionary opens up the possibility of reconstructing the notions of a polite Pole and a polite German. Finally, the author formulates the thesis that the creation of this type of bilingual (bicultural) dictionaries may result in the optimisation of intercultural communication.

Addressing and acknowledging readers and writers.

Effective opinion writing should present the author’s viewpoint in a convincing way but also engage the reader. Whether the author makes more references to their own viewpoints or to the reader is determined by the context of the text. Metadiscourse is a pragmatic framework of explicit linguistic devices used to make references to the reader, the writer and their evaluations, as well as references to the textual organisation. This paper employs the corpus-driven method called Multi-Dimensional Analysis to study statistically significant correlation patterns between metadiscourse markers. Four patterns emerge from a specialized corpus of opinion writing online in English by (semi-)professional writers (285,000 words). The patterns are interpreted as representing writers’ strategies to define the relationship between themselves, the reader and the topic. While there are some overlaps and cross-genre tendencies, the use of metadiscourse is to some extent determined by the prevailing norms of the sub-genre of the text – here, whether the publication platform is a blog, a news site, or the website of a print-newspaper. Blogs tend to use a writer-oriented strategy with more self-mentions, and news sites a reader-oriented strategy or a solidarity strategy uniting the reader and writer under a shared “we”-pronoun. The results of the study may be of value both in understanding the journalistic online genres and for the development of the metadiscourse framework.

Virtual Cultural Communication.

The overall aim of the current paper is to establish best practices for developing, engaging and working critically in virtual intercultural communication. The need to build practical language communication skills is not a new idea or a new part of methodology. With the development of technology, the range of communicative opportunities has grown and allowed virtual intercultural dialogues to take place. The focus of these situations is not only language development and practice, but also critical cultural awareness and intercultural skill development. The paper presents contrasting approaches in the methodological construction of one such programme between young students in Entel Foreign Language School, China, and Krosno State College, Poland. Over the course of the link from Spring to Summer 2017, different approaches were taken by the instructors and students in both countries resulting in varying levels of engagement and critical understanding. The Chinese approach stresses communication as an outcome and delivers more time to oral activities in the classroom, which contrasts with the Polish approach of a stricter language-based teaching strategy. As a result, the paper will discuss the relative merits of the two methodological frameworks in the communication project. This will be achieved by evaluating the overall success of the communication based on interviews with the student participants and observations of interaction during the link meetings. Finally, the paper will illustrate a methodology for working with such links and developing intercultural communication.

Obrazowo mówiąc.

Artykuł jest poświęcony komunikatom wizualno-werbalnym na okładkach czasopism publicystycznych. Bogaty w znaczenia komunikat, który łączy elementy ikoniczne i słowne, pozwala analizować relację pomiędzy obydwoma komponentami, a także prześledzić wielopoziomowy charakter odczytywanych treści. W artykule przedstawiono przykłady ikonizacji przekazów werbalnych i ukazano wpływ obrazu na sposób odczytywania słów, a także wpływ języka na sposób interpretowania znaków ikonicznych. // The article deals with visual and verbal messages placed on the covers of weekly magazines. Rich in meanings, the message which combines the iconic and verbal elements makes it possible to analyse the relation between those two components as well as to examine multiple levels of the contents involved. The article presents examples of the iconicity of verbal messages, shows the influence of image on the way words are read, as well as the impact of language on the manner iconic signs are interpreted.

„Coming out” czyli „wychodzenie z szafy”:

Artykuł przedstawia analizę porównawczą językowych obrazów świata „wyłaniających” się z polskich i angielskich tekstów prasowych relacjonujących coming out polskiego księdza. Wykorzystany tu model językowego obrazu świata wg Jamesa Underhilla (np. 2011) zakłada wielowymiarowość tego zjawiska, obejmującego nie tylko zakodowany w systemie danego języka sposób postrzegania i konceptualizowania rzeczywistości, ale także wymiary osobisty, ideologiczny i związany z perspektywą mówiącego. Analiza tekstów na ww. temat w odniesieniu do tych właśnie wymiarów pozwala określić, na ile wyłaniające się z nich obrazy są do siebie podobne, a na ile różne. Zebrane artykuły prasowe traktują o tym samym wydarzeniu, ale ponieważ powstały w dwóch różnych kontekstach kulturowych, należy spodziewać się odmiennych oglądów sytuacji. Analiza porównawcza rzuca światło na istotę tych różnic oraz prowadzi do refleksji nad ich uwarunkowaniami. // The article presents an analysis of linguistic worldviews emerging from the Polish and English press articles reporting on the coming out of a Polish priest. James Underhill’s (2012) model of the linguistic worldview used for the analysis assumes multidimensionality of this phenomenon that embraces not only the dimensions of world-perceiving and world-conceiving encoded in language systems but also the dimensions of personal world, cultural mindset and the perspective of the speaker. The analysis of the press articles in relation to these dimensions reveals similarities and differences between the linguistic worldviews emerging from the articles. The newspaper articles collected for the analysis deal with the same event but because they have been created in two different cultural contexts, a different view of the world should be expected. The comparative analysis sheds light on the nature of these differences and reflects on their circumstances.

Komunikacja a Teoria Modeli Relacyjnych

Artykuł podejmuje kwestię roli modeli poznawczych czy też ram doświadczeniowych wkomunikacji, a szczególnie w dyskursie perswazyjnym. Jedną z takich ram są modele relacyjneopisujące uniwersalne mechanizmy podejmowania decyzji społecznych. Ponieważ modelerelacyjne odnoszą się do ostatecznych kryteriów podejmowania wszelkich decyzji, są one alboimplicytnie przyjmowane przez uczestników aktów komunikacyjnych albo też są negocjowane.Jeżeli zaś nie są one negocjowane, a uczestnicy aktu komunikacyjnego prowadzą dyskurs wramach różnych modeli relacyjnych to perswazja zasadniczo nie jest możliwa. // The article focuses on experiential frames of reference and cognitive models that serve as abasis for communication. In particular, the author points out that the so called relational modelsare an indispensable frame of reference in persuasive discourse. For persuasive discourse to besuccessful the participants must either implicitly assume a shared model or negotiate it. Thenegotiation, usually in the form of metacommunication, is a necessary prerequisite for positiveor expected outcomes. Otherwise, if participants fail to negotiate a model, they actually talk atcross-purposes, sometimes even without realizing it.

O stylu (stylach) komentarzy internetowych

Przyjmując za punkt wyjścia istnienie stylów i gatunków tekstu, opisanych przez A. Awdiejewai G. Habrajską (2006), autorka próbuje określić, jakie cechy stylistyczne (ewentualnie teżgatunkowe) mają komentarze internetowe na przykładzie komentarzy zamieszczanych naportalu Onet.pl. Obserwacja wykazuje, że badane teksty mają przede wszystkim potocznewykładniki językowe, ale nie brak im też wykładników publicystycznych. Można zatem mówićo stylu mieszanym. // Assuming text styles and genres as described in Awdiejew and Habrajska (2006), in this paperI try to determine which stylistic (genre) features can be proposed for internet commentaries,basing on those placed in Onet.pl. The study shows that the analyzed texts have mostlytypological indicators of colloquial style, but they also possess typological indicators ofjournalistic genres. We can thus propose the existence of mixed style.

W poszukiwaniu jednostki mowy.

Celem tego artykułu jest rewizja takich pojęć jak zdanie, wypowiedź, akt mowy, zdarzenie komunikacyjne w obliczu nowych potrzeb badawczych i szerszego rozumienia języka – języka uwikłanego w złożony proces komunikowania, a zatem jako narzędzia służącego nie tyle do produkcji znaczeń, ile do ich przekazywania i interpersonalnego współtworzenia. Z takiej perspektywy język jawi się nie jako system, ale jako jedno z narzędzi symbolizowania znaczeń i intencjonalnych przesłań, które służą do wytwarzania i regulowania więzi społecznych. Zamiarem autorek jest zatem taka redefinicja tradycyjnych dla językoznawstwa i pragmatyki mowy pojęć, aby stały się one dobrym narzędziem dla opisu typu zdarzenia komunikacyjnego i wytworzonej jednostkowej interakcji. Chcemy też usunąć istniejące zamieszanie terminologiczne, tzn. wyeliminować używanie tych samych pojęć dla określenia innych zjawisk mownych lub innych poziomów mowy, a w rezultacie zhierarchizować te pojęcia oraz wytyczyć im przejrzyste ramy definicyjne. A wszystko to po to, by w tych ramach dała się zawrzeć także perspektywa odbiorcy jako czynnego uczestnika i współtwórcy komunikacyjnego zdarzenia, wypowiedzi, a nawet zdania. // The article aims at a revision of such terms as sentence, utterance, speech act, or communication event in view of new research needs and a broader understanding of language as involved in a complex communication process and thus considered a tool of not only generating meanings, but also conveying them in interpersonal collaboration. From such a perspective language appears to be not only a system, but also one of the tools of symbolizing meanings and intentional acts which serve the purpose of generating and regulating social bonds. The purpose of the authors is thus to define traditional linguistic concepts in order to makes them good tools to describe the types of communication events and the ensuing individual interactions. We also intend to resolve the existing terminological confusion, i.e. to eliminate the employment of the same terms to describe different speech events and different levels of speech, and as a result to place the concepts in a hierarchy and assign them clear definitions. All this is undertaken in order to fit in the perspective of the observer as an active participant and contributor to the communication event, utterance or even a sentence.

Konsiliencja, czyli o porozumieniu między naukami w trzecim tysiącleciu

Konsiliencja (termin wywodzący się z logiki indukcyjnej a „zmodernizowany” w latach 1990-tych przez E. O. Wilsona, twórcę socjobiologii) odnosi się do odwiecznego marzenialudzkości o unifikacji wiedzy z wszelkich dziedzin – od nauk ścisłych, poprzez naukispołeczno-ekonomiczne, aż do humanistyki a nawet sztuk wizualnych. Jest to poszukiwaniewspólnego systemu dla całokształtu wiedzy ludzkiej, oparte na wierze w jedność natury iuporządkowanie świata. We współczesnej nauce znalazło odzwierciedlenie w Ogólnej TeoriiSystemów, naukach hybrydycznych i studiach interdyscyplinarnych. Autorka dowodzi, żemetodologiczne poszukiwania współczesnego językoznawstwa, które zajmuje miejscecentralne w stosunku do wielu nauk, mogą wskazać nam drogę ku konsiliencji poprzezposzukiwanie kategorii o wielkiej ogólności (konieczność kontra przypadkowość, modelmatematyczny kontra model niematematyczny, struktura gry, itp.). Ostatecznie konsiliencjajest pytaniem o możliwość wypracowania wspólnego języka i wspólnej problematyki dlanaukowców w obliczu postępującej wąskiej specjalizacji i szczegółowości w badaniach. // Consilience (the term originating in inductive logic and “modernized” in the 1990s by E. O.Wilson, the creator of sociobiology) refers to the age-long dream of humanity that one day all branches of learning will see their unification – from the sciences, through social and economic studies, to humanities and even visual arts. Thus, consilience is a search for a common system that would underlie the totality of human knowledge, rooted in the belief in the unity of nature and orderliness of our universe. It has found its reflection in the General Systems Theory, hybrid disciplines and interdisciplinary studies. The author argues that the methodological quests of modern linguistics, which occupies a central position in relation to several disciplines, can direct us towards reaching consilience by focusing on categories and concepts of great generality (necessity vs. contingency, mathematical vs. non-mathematical modelling, the structure of game, etc.). Ultimately, consilience raises a question as to the feasibility of working out a common language and a common set of problems for all scholars and scientists despite the progressing narrowness of specialization and minuteness of research.

Podstawowe problemy językoznawstwa antropologicznego

Faces of Contemporary Cognitivism

The paper focuses on a comparison of the concepts of language and language studies as presented in contemporary cognitivism and expounded by Ronald Langacker, George Lakoff and Charles Fillmore in their versions of Cognitive Grammar on the one hand and by Noam Chomsky in his Minimalism Program on the other. The theoretical concepts and hypotheses that are discussed relate to the concept of modelling and the locus of linguistic meaning, place of intentionality in the philosophy of language and linguistic theory, the nature of language and cognitive abilities as well as the proper theme of linguistic inquiry. The status of public(shared) language and the position of meaning and semantic theories in linguistic description are dealt with in the next part. Problems evolving from those diverse views on language such as verifiability on the one hand and the methodological constraint on the other conclude the discussion. Referred to are also the generative as opposed to cognitive models of language acquisition and, consequently, diverse methodologies as used by scholars of these persuasions.Conclusions show those aspects of Chomsky’s generativism and Cognitive Linguistics that seem incompatible and those that can be perceived as converging.

The article focuses on extracting from the shadows certain events that, for strategic or accidental reasons, did not leave any traces in the archives, testimonies and various documents of people who were the subject of research (most often in the case of the reconstruction of their biographies). This text refers to a situation in which the problem is not so much the lack of data as their excess, as well as numerous legends that have grown up around the main figure of the reconstruction of life history – Zygmunt Bauman. The article emphasizes the importance of context and meanings accompanying the recreated biography, which enables a better understanding of the main character.
