BP’S CONSTRUCTION OF AN ORGANIZATIONAL IDENTITY ON ITS WEBSITE: A CASE STUDY OF DISCURSIVE LEGITIMIZATION

Author(s): Dita Trčková / Language(s): English Issue: 2/2014

The paper presents a critical discourse analysis of the website of one of the world’s major oil companies, Beyond Petroleum (BP), formerly British Petroleum, with the focus on investigating the construction of BP’s corporate identity. The analysis reveals that BP enacts multiple positive discursive roles, including the identities of an indispensable organization, a philanthropist, an environmentally conscious company, an explorer, a researcher, an educator and an American dream achiever. These roles serve as a potent legitimizing strategy since they enable BP to be associated with higher social and moral values. The analysis shows that BP’s environmentally protective ethos adopts the ideology of the domination of human beings over nature through technology, an ideology which is suited to the company’s profit-making purpose.

Children and digital media

Children and digital media

Author(s): Matea Halapa,Marina Đuranović / Language(s): English Issue: 2/2021

Digital revolution has transformed childhood very profusely. The goal of this work is to present the way digital technology influences education, in what way it shapes various dimensions of life and the identity of preschool children and the challenges upbringing parents are faced with. Numerous researches have indicated that digital media can be a worthy source of knowledge, encourage and develop various children's abilities and skills if they are used appropriately and under adult guidance. However, uncontrolled and excessive use of media in early children's age can potentially have extremely negative and harmful effects on the child's growth and development and endanger his/her health and happiness. Parents and other adults in charge of children’s care significantly affect children’s approach to the media and media content. This paper has concluded on the fact that social media has dual effect on the child; therefore, it is necessary to offer quality preventive programmes and workshops not only for parents and educators but also for children and youth.

Non-financial reporting of chemical companies in the Czech Republic

Author(s): Simona Munzarova,Jana Kostalova,Eliska Fialova / Language(s): English Issue: 1/2022

This paper focuses on the issue of non-financial corporate reporting by the Czech chemical companies. Based on the content analysis of the websites and disclosures, it analyses, compares and evaluates the level of web communication of the economic, environmental and social issues of corporate social responsibility of these companies. At first, it presents results of the research comparing the extent of non-financial web communication of selected Czech chemical companies with the Czech leaders in the Czech TOP 100 rankings. These results are then complemented by results of the quantitative research on environmental instruments used by all Czech chemical production companies, that use websites for communication of their activities. The number of companies in the Czech Republic processing non-financial reports is significantly lower than abroad, but it is still growing. Large enterprises pay more attention to non-financial reporting. Rather than including this information in a disclosure, a business website is used as a tool for this communication. The paper brings sectoral perspective into non-financial reporting literature, as attention is paid to the chemical production sector and also complements the knowledge of communication of companies that do not belong to the group of 100 most important companies within the country.

Umiejscawianie nauki (o literaturze)

Author(s): Adela Kobelska / Language(s): Polish Issue: 1/2022

Pointing that geographical context of scientific knowledge development is still insufficiently recognized, the author tries to establish a method of placing (literary) science with a use of (auto) biographical factors and cultural history approach. The University of Poznan Polonists’ Circle from the twenties and thirties of the XX century serves as an exemplary research object for analysis designed in that manner.

Co warto widzieć na pierwszy rzut oka? Zarys praktyki dydaktycznej Franciszki Themerson w latach 1963–1968

Author(s): Honorata Sroka / Language(s): Polish Issue: 1/2022

In the article I concern a period of Franciszka Themerson’s life when she was a lecturer at two academies in Great Britain: Wimbledon School of Art (1963–1968) and Bath Academy of Art (1967–1968). I display a didactical practice of the painter, putting attention on material outputs of collaborations – the selected issue of magazine “It’s”. The aim of analysis of publishing experiments made by Themerson together with her students is to show relations between artistic, editional and didactical practices of this vanguard artist.

Dlaczego (auto)biografie? Literatura dokumentu osobistego kiedyś i dziś

Dlaczego (auto)biografie? Literatura dokumentu osobistego kiedyś i dziś

Author(s): Anna Pekaniec / Language(s): Polish Issue: 1/2022

This text is a review of selected ways of defining autobiography and biography, showing the specificity of each genre of personal writing, as well as indicating points of contact and exposing mutual dependencies. The (auto)biographical theories of e.g. Małgorzata Czermińska, Phillipe Lejeune, George Mish combined with theoretical approaches to biography by Jerzy Jarniewicz, Lucyna Marzec, Michał Paweł Markowski, complemented by a gender component, not omitting also the specificity of letters as a genre more strongly related to autobiography than biography, served to indicate the reasons for the permanent attractiveness of personal document literature. Moreover, by taking into account narrative theories of identity, an attempt was made to reconstruct possible constructions of the (autobiographical) subject. The whole article (in an extended version) was delivered as an inaugural lecture during the opening of the Biography and Autobiography Research Workshop at the Faculty of Polish Studies of the Jagiellonian University.

This article asserts the need for education in order to move towards integral ecology and studies the role that the family, the spirituality and the university can play in this formative task. The family has the primary right to educate and it is indeed the most important school. The spirituality «can motivate us to a more passionate concern for the protection of our world». The university must also play an important role, harmoniously integrating learning and social service, rather than reducing itself to a merely instrumental and transmitting function. Thus, a new relational paradigm will be possible, one that fosters family relationshipsand a holistic vision of reality. This urgent need has also been highlighted by the current Covid-19 pandemic.

Narrative as an Element of Podcast Production: The Case Study of Nezhasínaj!

Narrative as an Element of Podcast Production: The Case Study of Nezhasínaj!

Author(s): Patrik Kolenčík,Zora Hudíková / Language(s): English Issue: 2/2022

The podcast has discovered its own listeners over the past few years and has naturally integrated itself into their daily lives. Its remarkable growth is also resonating in professional and scholarly circles, where attempts are being made to define it and integrate it into mass media theories. The diverse range of genres and means of expression offered by the podcast as a medium has (in terms of the means of communication used) overlaps (in terms of the medium) mainly with radio, but also with television production, and in terms of the broader division of genres mainly with journalism and also with news and fiction genres. The common denominator of all the forms of content presentation mentioned above is the frequent presence of a narrative, which makes the media work attractive and, as we will point out in the article, comprehensible. The principle of narrative as a means of communicating their content has been adopted by podcast creators from other media forms, which may result in the fact that on some podcast platforms a separate category of content division - Stories - is emerging. In the present study, we will highlight how a story can be built in podcast production, and what are the means of building a story in a podcast.
