The paper is an analysis and interpretation of a short story by Witold Gombrowicz entitled Adventures (original title: Five minutes before falling asleep) from his first collection of short stories Recollections of Adolescence of 1933, which was included in the Bacacay collection after the war. The text is regarded as a record of a dream and therefore it is interpreted through S. Freud's The Interpretation of Dreams. From this perspective its meaning is clear: it is a story of the queer subject's unattainable dream of becoming a Great Polish Writer.

KSIĄDZ PROFESOR BONIFACY MIĄZEK – POETA WYGNANY

The article presents the person of the Rev. Bonifacy Miazek, a Polish poet, who emigrated from the country for political reasons in 1965. Since then he has been living and working in Austria. His output is not abundant, since so far he has had five volumes published: Ziemia otwarta [The Earth open], Szukam domu [I am looking for home], Powrót do domu [A return home], Sandomierskie wirydarze [The cloister gardens of Sandomierz], Wiersze [Poems]. He is still active as a poet, though, creating lyric poems filled with religious aspects, philosophical poems and texts full of love and longing for the homeland.

In addition, the article describes the influence of the Japanese traditions on Polish poems.The author deals with such subjects as: silence in poems of Ryszard Krynicki, the philosophy ofZen Buddhism, Polish and Japanese haiku, metaphysics.

IZGNANI ANDRIĆ U LIRICI I PRIPOVECI ZANOS I STRADANE TOMA GALUSA

This paper seeks to analyze the experiences of exile, imprisonment and exclusion, through which the poet and prose writer Ivo Andriæ lived during the First World War, and also their influence on the collection of poetry entitled Ex Ponto (1918), on the verses in prose Nemiri(Unrest, 1920), as well as on the short stories Most na epi (The Bridge on the epa, 1925) and Zanosi i stradanja Tome Galusa (The Ecstasy and Suffering of Toma Galus, 1931). Sucha textual analysis, based as it is on biographical facts, will attempt to show how Andriæ’s direct experience of war and persecution looms largely in his poetry of the period, and is also perceivable in the psychological structure of the short story characters of Toma Galus and VizierJusuf. The motifs of sun, darkness and prison, associated with the unjust incarceration of the above-mentioned heroes are the key elements in Andriæ’s early works, characterized by a profound sentiment of melancholy and isolation. They also make an integral part of the psychological and poetic context.

PRZECIW MITOM – O MROCZNYCH STRONACH MACIERZYŃSTWA W POWIEŚCI SLAVENKI DRAKULIĆ – OPTUŽENA

Starting with Jean Jacob Rousseau’s, Sigmund Freud’s and feminists’ of the second wave views on maternity, the paper shows Slavenka Drakulič’s ideas presented in her novel Optužena. The Croatian author rejects the myth of maternal love by writing about violence against the child and pathology in the mother-daughter relationship. The problem of transgenerational transmission of trauma is shown in an interesting literary way and it is really innovatory.

ZAKŁADNICY ZBIOROWYCH ILUZJI

After 1954, in Yugoslavia we have come to deal with relativisation of the truth, and also that of the right to life for everybody who did not fit in the dominant ideology. From the beginning of the 1990s Croatian culture has been restoring to the official stream of memory the tragic histories of writers who opposed the collective delusion, sometimes becoming hostages.The meaningful and symbolic removal of the writers’ names and works, as well as the stigma of betrayal and collaboration create a comprehensive mosaic of various cases of exclusion, which can be considered in the context of lies and concealments about World War II and the subsequent Titoism.

INNY/OBCY: DOŚWIADCZENIE JĘZYKA I RZECZYWISTOŚCI (LITERACKO-KULTUROWA PONOWOCZESNOOŚĆ)

The subject matter is developed around the Other, their presence and their personalising in the literary-cultural space. The reality becomes the source of observation (fiction and non-fiction) and reveals not only a variety of human experience in the world of multiculturalism, but also forms of “branding” the Other (rhetoric of the dominant communities towards cultural minorities) which correspond to them. The analysis of the rhetoric of speech and image permits to reveal the good and the bad side of language-cultural stereotypes, including also attitudes and behaviours affected by ideology.

LINGUA RECEPTIVA CZY LINGUA FRANCA? PRACOWNICY BRANŻY USŁUGOWO-TURYSTYCZNEJ O KOMUNIKACJI POLSKO-CZESKIEJ NA POGRANICZU (PILOTAŻOWE BADANIE ANKIETOWE)

The aim of the paper is to analyse the problem of competition between or coexistence of ELF (English as Lingua Franca) and LaRa (Lingua Receptiva) as communication variants in the Polish-Czech border area. To support the analysis a survey was conducted, whose quantitative results are presented in the paper. The author concludes that although LaRa is not “an endangered language”, the role of ELF in everyday communication of the Polish-Czech borderland inhabitants is increasing under the influence of global and regional social, political and, especially, economic factors.

New Azerbaijani Prose in the Context of All Turkish Literature

Śladami „skradzionego” mózgu. Fantastyczne fabuły w romanetach Jakuba Arbesa

The article is concerned with the generic specifics of the romaneto, a literary mode established by Czech writer Jakub Arbes, taking as its vantage point the way in which fantastic storylines operate within it. Arbes’s romanettos can be characterized by the interplay of gothic writing and science fiction. The study focuses on his most wellknown romanetto Newton’s Brain (Newtonův mozek). The analysis aims at a comparative investigation of the stolen brain motif related to the popular story of Einstein’s stolen brain and its literary repercussions. // Artykuł dotyczy wyznaczników romaneto – gatunku literackiego zapoczątkowanego przez czeskiego pisarza Jakuba Arbesa – przyjmując za punkt wyjścia sposób, w jaki rozwijają się w nim fantastyczne fabuły. Romaneta Arbesa charakteryzuje wzajemne oddziaływanie powieści gotyckiej i science fiction. Artykuł koncentruje się na najbardziej znanym romaneto Mózg Newtona (Newtonův mozek). Analiza skupia się na porównawczym rozpatrywaniu motywu ukradzionego mózgu w relacji do historii o ukradzionym mózgu Ensteina i jej literackich reperkusjach.

Wiara w moc twórczą i dynamiczna koncepcja bytu w nowelistyce Stefana Grabińskiego (na przykładzie Dziedziny i Maszynisty Grota)

In his short prose, Stefan Grabiński often referred to issues connected with fields related to literature in order to deepen the psychological portrait of the characters he created. In the novellas I selected, the author refers to philosophy (including Bergson’s theories) and psychoanalysis, which allows him to create credible and true-tolife figures whom he, at the same time, places in worlds that are plastic enough to become the arena of uncanny stories. Both The Realm and Grot, the Engine-Driver seem to be evidence of Grabiński’s prosaic genius, which he could demonstrate to the full in his novellas. Therefore, the article that I present is a peculiar reconnaissance, aimed at emphasising the virtuosity of this Polish classical writer of horror stories, and at pointing out his high competences in the field of constructing complex and true-to-life characters. // Stefan Grabiński w swoich krótkich formach prozatorskich często odwoływał się do zagadnień z dziedzin pokrewnych literaturze – w celu pogłębienia portretu psychologicznego bohaterów przez niego kreowanych. W wybranych przeze mnie nowelach autor odwołuje się do filozofii (w tym do teorii Bergsona) czy psychoanalizy, dzięki czemu może tworzyć bohaterów wiarygodnych, których jednocześnie osadza w światach wystarczająco plastycznych, by mogły stać się areną rozgrywania opowieści niesamowitych. Zarówno Dziedzina, jak i Maszynista Grot wydają się być świadectwem prozatorskiego geniuszu Grabińskiego, który najpełniej realizował się właśnie w nowelach. Zaprezentowany przeze mnie artykuł jest zatem swoistym rekonesansem mającym na celu uwydatnienie kunsztu pisarskiego polskiego klasyka grozy oraz zwrócenie uwagi na świadectwa jego wysokich kompetencji w dziedzinie konstruowania wiarygodnych i złożonych sylwetek bohaterów.

Kalendarium życia kulturalnego Łodzi (cz. 2). 1–15 kwietnia 1945

This publication – an extract from Calendar of Cultural Life in Lodz between 1945 and 1946 (Kalendarium łódzkiego życia kulturalnego w latach 1945-1946) – focuses on the first half of April 1945, when cultural life was reorganised after more than five years of German occupation and terror. In the history of Lodz spring 1945 was a peculiar period – in the face of the virtually complete annihilation of Warsaw, Lodz became the home for some of the Communist offices and was visited by prominent representatives of intellectual and cultural life. They were offered apartments and jobs in the state-controlled press and hastily established cultural institutions and universities. Through a detailed denotation of facts related to history, politics, and intellectual and artistic life, the author of the text makes an attempt to present the mechanisms and the dynamics of the earliest stage of the cultural and ideological revolution implemented in Poland between 1945 and 1948. // Publikacja niniejsza, drugi fragment Kalendarium łódzkiego życia kulturalnego w latach 1945-1946, obejmuje swoim zakresem pierwszą połowę kwietnia 1945 roku, czas organizowania się kultury po przeszło pięciu latach niemieckiego terroru okupacyjnego. W dziejach miasta przełom zimy i wiosny roku 1945 był to okres szczególny – wobec niemal całkowitego zburzenia Warszawy przez Niemców, na terenie Łodzi ulokowały się niektóre spośród komunistycznych urzędów, zaczęli tu także zjeżdżać ważni przedstawiciele życia umysłowego i kulturalnego. Oferowano im mieszkania, pracę w dynamicznie rozwijającej się, kontrolowanej przez władzę prasie oraz w tworzonych naprędce instytucjach kultury i uczelniach. Autor tekstu próbuje – poprzez szczegółową denotację faktów z pogranicza historii, polityki, życia umysłowego i artystycznego – przedstawić mechanizmy i dynamikę najwcześniejszego etapu kulturowo-ideologicznej rewolucji przeprowadzonej w Polsce w latach 1945-1948.

Literackie lekcje myślenia i wyobraźni

The text is a presentation of Katarzyna Kuczyńska-Koschany’s book entitled Skąd się bierze lekcja polskiego? Scenariusze, pomysły, konspekty (Poznań 2016), the fruit of a long-term cooperation with the editorial boards of “Polonistyka” and “Polonistyka. Innowacje”. It argues that these periodicals have been constructing an educational model aimed at the development of thinking and perception (also at school) that literature pictures a multiparous and complex world. Quoted findings by neurobiologists (art has created a brain) document the thesis on the educational significance of various ways of reading, which are described in the discussed publication. // Tekst jest prezentacją książki K. Kuczyńskiej-Koschany Skąd się bierze lekcja polskiego? Scenariusze, pomysły, konspekty (Poznań 2016), będącej efektem długoletniej współpracy z redakcjami „Polonistyki” i „Polonistyki. Innowacji”. Autorka przekonuje, że na ich łamach budowany był model kształcenia nastawiony na rozwijanie myślenia i postrzeganie (także w szkole) tego, że literatura obrazuje wielorodny, skomplikowany świat. Przywołane konstatacje neurobiologów (sztuka stworzyła mózg) dokumentują tezę o edukacyjnym znaczeniu rozmaitych sposobów czytania opisanych w omawianej publikacji.

Biblioteka jako przestrzeń uwewnętrzniona. O Starym gmachu Piotra Matywieckiego

The study is a multi-contextual review of the recollective essay by Piotr Matywiecki, entitled Old Edifice (Stary Gmach, Warsaw 2016). Not only do Katarzyna Kuczyńska-Koschany and Anita Jarzyna discuss the biographical dimension of the text devoted to the former premises of the Library of the University of Warsaw, where the author – a recognised poet and expert on Warsaw – worked for many years, but they also focus on another, more universal aspect of his deliberations, which tell a story about the departure of a certain intellectual generation – about an intellectual ethos and its genius loci on the map of Warsaw. At the same time, the reviewers emphasise and thematise the essential meaning of the essayistic form which favours erudite digressions and the composition of the book that is, to a great extent, subordinated to the logic of the depicted space and its spectral afterimages. // Szkic jest wielokontekstowym omówieniem wspomnieniowego eseju Piotra Matywieckiego pt. Stary gmach (Warszawa 2016). Katarzyna Kuczyńska-Koschany i Anita Jarzyna nie tylko zwracają uwagę na biograficzny wymiar tekstu poświęconego fenomenowi dawnej siedziby Biblioteki Uniwersytetu Warszawskiego, gdzie przez lata pracował autor – rozpoznawalny współczesny poeta i varsawianista, ale również koncentrują się na innym, bardziej uniwersalnym aspekcie tych rozważań będących opowieścią o odchodzeniu pewnej formacji intelektualnej – o inteligenckim etosie i jego genius loci na mapie stolicy. Recenzentki podkreślają przy tym i tematyzują kluczowe znaczenie formy eseistycznej sprzyjającej erudycyjnym dygresjom oraz kompozycji książki w znacznej mierze podporządkowanej logice opisywanej przestrzeni i jej widmowym powidokom.

Nie tylko cierpienie. O Próbie bólu Wojciecha Kudyby

The article is an attempt to discuss and review the book by Wojciech Kudyba, entitled A Trial of Pain. On poems by Joanna Pollakówna (Próba bólu. O wierszach Joanny Pollakówny), a dissertation devoted to one of the most prominent female poets of the second half of the 20th century. Having found numerous interpretative intuitions that I share with the author and drawing attention to the fact that he has opened new and interesting perspectives (the themes of spirituality, the concept of clearance), I dispute with Kudyba, above all, over the purposefulness of focusing on the issue of suffering. What I also disagree with is the bipartition of his work that underlines the differences between individual poems of Pollakówna. This idea distorts the tendency to reconcile opposing opinions and find “the wobbly balance”. // Artykuł stanowi omówienie i recenzję książki Wojciecha Kudyby Próba bólu. O wierszach Joanny Pollakówny – rozprawy poświęconej jednej z najwybitniejszych poetek drugiej połowy XX wieku. Dostrzegając wiele wspólnych z autorem intuicji interpretacyjnych i zwracając uwagę na otwarcie przez niego nowych, ciekawych perspektyw (tematy duchowości, kategoria prześwitu), polemizuję przede wszystkim z celowością koncentracji na zagadnieniu cierpienia. Nie zgadzam się również z dwudzielnością pracy Kudyby – uwyraźniającą różnice między poszczególnymi wierszami Pollakówny. Pomysł taki przekłamuje ważną w twórczości poetki tendencję do godzenia przeciwstawnych stanowisk, odnajdowania „równowagi chybotliwej”.
