Summary/Abstract: The aim of the paper is to analyse the problem of competition between or coexistence of ELF (English as Lingua Franca) and LaRa (Lingua Receptiva) as communication variants in the Polish-Czech border area. To support the analysis a survey was conducted, whose quantitative results are presented in the paper. The author concludes that although LaRa is not “an endangered language”, the role of ELF in everyday communication of the Polish-Czech borderland inhabitants is increasing under the influence of global and regional social, political and, especially, economic factors.
