Literacki kontekst dzieła muzycznego

The following article describes a phenomenon of the correspondence of arts using the works of Frederic Chopin and Alexander Scriabin as an example. The author is interested in the relations between music and literature and Chopin’s ballads and Scriabin’s piano poems, the genres, which are an effect of such relations. The analysis of those works shows that both composers have a different understanding of the essence of music and literature but there are also similarities. The ballads and poems do not convey a literary programme or music illustration but their sound matter is additionally complemented by the genre category, title or commentary instead.

Kody alchemiczne w rosyjskim przekładzie "Devotions upon Emergent Occasions" Johna Donne’a

John Donne’s Devotions upon Emergent Occasions is a very difficult work to translate because it is abundant in alchemical terms and imagery the contemporary reader may hardly understand as alchemy is long a dead language code. Unfortunately, that imagery often refers to a specific theological background and it should be elucidated either by means of clever translation or by virtue of footnotes or commentary. Otherwise, grasping the proper meaning of the entire Donne’s work may be impossible. Russian translation of Donne’s Devotions by Anton Nesterov is perhaps the best existing attempt to render the original text with all its intricacy into language other than English. However, there are some treacherous and fascinating passages in Devotions upon Emergent Occasions Niestierow mistranslated because he did not fully understand the alchemical background they refer to.

ЕГИПЕТСКАЯ ТЕМА В ТВОРЧЕСТВЕ А. П. ЧЕХОВА

The present article deals with the biblical themes of the escape to Egypt and the exodus from Egypt as depicted in the narrative and the epistolary fiction of the writer. In the letters of A. P. Chekhov Egypt is associated with favorable living conditions for those who suffer from lung diseases. Besides, the author was taken with the idea of visiting this country, but his dream did not come true. In the early Anton Chekhov’s short story “Holiday” [“Prazdnichnye”] the motif of the escape to Egypt is put in a humorous context. The same motif along with the motif of the Exodus from Egypt was used by the author in the story “Men” [“Muzhiki”]. Both in the letters and in the stories and novels of the writer, the motif of the escape to Egypt keeps the Christian semantics of Salvation. In the short story “Misery” [“Toska”] Egypt is implicitly present — it is linked with the epigraph to the text, the basis for which is a spiritual verse “Weeping of Joseph, when his brothers sold him in Egypt”. The motif of being in Egyptian slavery — another aspect of the theme in question — translates into a number of works and letters of A. P. Chekhov. This motif is associated with the meanings of freedom and grief. The article reveals and analyses the antinomic images of St. Mary of Egypt and Cleopatra of Egypt. Besides, it explores semantic realization of the set expression “plague of Egypt”.

Drawing on the most recent literature in the field of comics studies, this article offers an in-depth analysis of Agata Wawryniuk’s graphic novel Rozmówki polsko-angielskie [Polish-English Phrasebook] (2012). Van Heuckelom focuses on the interplay between the author’s thematic engagement with contemporary labour migration on the one hand and the book’s generic hybridity and stylistic expressivity on the other. Wawryniuk’s carefully penciled artwork reveals certain self-reflexive and performative traits: as a hand-drawn artefact bearing the fingerprint of its female maker, the novel embodies a kind of manual labour that fundamentally differs from the mind-numbing, repetitive, and risky forms of work carried out by the labour migrants depicted in the world of the story itself.

Inne emigracje? Spotkania (nie)możliwe polskiej prozy powstającej w Niemczech i w Wielkiej Brytanii

The article asks whether the most recent ‘Polish-German’ and ‘Polish-British’ prose by Polish emigre writers is keeping up with literary scholarship and its conspicuous preference for the paradigm of migration over emigration. Zduniak-Wiktorowicz looks at several younger Polish writers working in Germany and England (such as Magdalena Parys, Paulina Schulz, Alexandra Tobor, Jan Krasnowolski and Adam Miklasz) to produce a comparative account of both the circumstances of their emigration and their literary work. She demonstrates that authors born in the 1970s and 1980s draw on literary conventions that have never before been used on such a massive scale in this type of Polish prose. Her corpus includes the action novel, thriller, political thriller, detective novel, and themes related to these genres, such as mystery, taboo, or overcoming cultural conventions.

Iser’s conception of the implied reader allows us to understand more about reading opportunities, provided by technology since – by defining the reader as a disposition resulting from networks of text meanings – this notion allows their integration in the textures of the Net afterwards. As a conjunction of culture and technology, digitized text actually poses problem of bringing these together, of the cultural consequences of the encounter between digital and print culture. It is difficult to say whether this encounter refutes big postmodern myths, or proves them right, but this answer will undoubtedly affect the destiny of the text.

The article presents the first study of the image of perception of the Russian Far East emigrants in the Chinese literature of 1920-1940. Ethnic, political, sociocultural attitude of the Chinese writers of "the latest time", their personal experience of interethnic contacts found reflection in these images. The stories, which have not been earlier translated into Russian served as material of a research (Xiao Hong The sorrow of Sofia, Jue Qing Harbin) and works of Qu Qiubai and Ding Ling.

Neuger explores how local terms in Wisława Szymborska’s poetry are translated into English (by Stanisław Barańczak and Clare Cavanagh) and Swedish (Anders Bodegård). Problematic aspects include proper nouns (such as Zabierzów in the poem ‘A Tale Begun’ or the shoes from Chełmek in ‘Stage Fright’), the names of Polish dishes and culinary customs, as well as family relationships (the Swedish translator must decide if the grandma in Zabierzow is a maternal or a paternal grandmother).

Starting from the history and definition of socialism, as well as various practices of this ideology, this paper deals with the adoption of socialist doctrines in Soviet and Yugoslav literature. The analysis of the novel Thirtieth Marina‟s Love by Vladimir Sorokin, paper attempts to show the utopian idea of socialist doctrine that aspires to impose their ideological matrix of artistic discourse. Skillfuly combining the utilitarian discourse and style of totalitarian communist manifesto with literature, Sorokin parody of the production of the novel indicates its inability to simultaneously satisfy the aesthetic qualities that are expected of true work of fiction and obvious of intent which, as such, can only survive in the milieu of a particular system which is creates.

Wounds Sustained, Wounds Nurtured: Rituals of Violence at Wagah

The Radcliffe Line at Wagah is now a world famous tourist spot where each evening thousands of tourists gather to witness the ritual of lowering the flags of India and Pakistan. Visiting the place is kind of pilgrimage for the Indians, (and must be for the Pakistanis as well), and the Wagah has gradually evolved into a shrine of patriotism. The ceremony of lowering the flag lasts about an hour when on both sides of the border there remain a kind of celebratory atmosphere—and the thing celebrated is nationalism. The patriotic frenzy, however, leads to a menacing display virtual violence as the cry varat mata ki jai ( victory to mother India) on the one side and Pakisthan jindabad(long live Pakistan) on the other bangs upon the ear and fills the air around. Each side tries to supersede the other; the cry gets louder and louder and the tension rises as if there will be an instant war. It leads the sensitive mind into troubled history of partition of India and to the indelible trauma of communal violence—the wound that the people of the subcontinent sustained during and in the aftermath of the partition in 1947. The paper will attempt to analyse the nationalistic ceremony at Wagah and will explore the problematic nature Indian nationalism and national identity. The objective is to examine the paradoxical nature of the Wagah rituals which though aimed at consolidating national identity ends up disrupting it. In the course of discussion, three cultural texts, namely, the ceremony at Wagah, the memoir of Sadat Hassan Manto‘s last days in Mumbai, and Shabnam Virmani‘s documentary film Had Anhad (Bounded Boundless) will act as intertexts of the article.

It traces the features that characterize the extraterritorial writing, as well as the thematic presence of the migration problems, in particular that of the language nomadism in the short story collections Biography of Crystal (Biografia de Cristal, 1992), Slipping (Deslizamento, 2009), and Remington (Remington, 2013).

ОТНОШЕНИЕТО ЦЕНТЪР – ПЕРИФЕРИЯ/ЕВРОПЕЙСКИ ЗАПАД – ЕВРОПЕЙСКИ (ЮГО)ИЗТОК КАТО МОТИВ В ПРОЗАТА НА АВТОРИ-МИГРАНТИ ОТ БАЛКАНИТЕ

The paper analyses the writing of three authors who emigrated from the Balkans and settled in France in 1960s and 1970s. – Vassilis Alexakis (of Greek descent), Dumitru Tsepeneag (of Romanian descent) and Julia Kristeva (of Bulgarian descent). It aims to present the intermediate position of these immigrant authors in Western European environment in regard to the constituent components of their new identity – an intermediate position that allows them to examine the processes simultaneously from the “outside” and the “inside” and to generate bidirectional interpretations and literary images. The issues are further compounded by the inherent “crossroad” and “transitory” geopolitical characteristics of the Balkans, often thought of as a border region between the East and the West. From this point of view, the immigrant authors from the Balkan region appear to have a very complex existence, in which two kinds of duality intertwine – the one imposed by migration, and the other imposed by the “marginalization” and “uncertainty” of the Balkans when it comes to their European status. Because of these peculiarities, the three writers construct in their novels a variety of models for imagining the “native” and the “foreign”, the centre (European West) and the periphery (European Southeast), and the Other.

CONTRIBUTIONS TO THE CULTURAL HISTORY OF EMERALD IN EARLY INDIA

The present paper offers a complete inventory of authoritative passages in Sanskrit and Prakrit texts on gemmology and Sanskrit lexicons where emerald is dealt with. Fresh light is thrown on the hotly debated issue whether the description of beryl in the Arthaśāstra II, 11, 30 contains an indirect reference to emerald. The Sanskrit names of emerald are analysed and commented on. Texts revealing the history of emerald and its origin are put to the test, and the evident mistakes prevalent in the special literature are corrected. Finally, a peculiar belief on the magic power of emerald is analysed within a wider context.

Mythologie und Religiöse Einflüsse in den Mongolischen und Tibetischen Geser-Epos-Versionen

Im Rahmen einer größeren Arbeit soll der kulturelle Hintergrund von tibetischen und mongolischen Geser-Versionen einer vergleichenden Analyse unterworfen werden. Die ins Auge gefassten Versionen sind die von R. A. Stein (1956) publizierte „Lamaistische oder gLing-Version“, die von M. Hermanns (1965), herausgegebene „Amdo-Version“, eine der ladakischen Versionen von S. Herrmann (1991), die von I. J. Schmidt ins deutsche übersetzte mongolische Druckversion von 1716 samt seinen Ergänzungen (Schmidt 1936; Heissig 1983), dann die ostburjätische Version von M. N. Hangalov (1969) und die westburjätische von M. Imegenov (1995). In allen Versionen bildet der innerasiatische Seelenglaube die Grundlage, die aber in der Mythologie recht große Unterschiede zulässt. Von den großen Religionen ist der Buddhismus — in verschiedenem Maße — am stärksten vertreten, aber auch andere Ideologien haben ihre Spuren hinterlassen.
