Inglise luule ja draama baltisaksa retseptsioonist - Eestimaa Kirjanduse Ühingu raamatukogu põhjal

Based on the subclass XII (poetry and drama) of the Library of Estonian Literary Society, a Baltic German learned society (1842-1940) in Tallinn, this paper takes a look at the emergence of English literature in (Northern) Estonia. A more continuous reception of English literature in this area began in the second half of the 18th century. Although the most often mentioned publication place was London and some direct contacts can be traced with the help of inscriptions, the main part (4/5) of English literature reached the Baltic German reader via German printing and publishing houses and in translation. Some works were also published in the Baltics. In the 18th and 19th centuries only a few were able to read English in Estonia, mostly people with higher education, e. g. teachers, but also some merchants and aristocrats. The most popular authors of poetry and drama were Shakespeare and Byron, the most popular texts including Macpherson’s The Poems of Ossian, Milton’s Paradise Lost, Thomson’s The Seasons and Young’s Night-Thoughts.

Soome dramaturgia nõukogude eesti teatrilaval

The article deals with the reception of Finnish plays and adaptations of Finnish novels in the Soviet Estonian theater (1944-1991), relying on the theory of cultural transfer. It first describes the mechanisms to form and control the theater repertoire in Soviet Estonia. The productions of Finnish drama are then examined by different periods: Stalinism and the “thaw” - interruption and then the return of Finnish classics to the stage; the late 1960s and the 1970s - first stage productions of Finnish contemporary drama and productions of classics in a modern style; the 1980s - stage productions based on folklore and the epic Kalevala; the period of the restoration of Estonian independence – politically motivated interpretations of Finnish contemporary drama. In general, the repertoire was dominated by classics; the most popular authors were Hella Wuolijoki and Aleksis Kivi. Regular contact with Finnish contemporary literature only occurred in the mid-1980s. The main strategies of reception were acceptance and adaptation. In the Estonian theater, Finnish dramas helped to construct an imaginary “golden past”, which, on the basis of similarity, fed the nostalgia of Estonians for the lost times and contributed to the preservation of Estonianness. In late Soviet Estonia theatrical productions based on Kalevala and folklore acquired an additional mission of building up a Finno-Ugric identity different not only from the Soviet one, but also from IndoEuropean models.

The article under studies deals with the issue of inter-national and inter-cultural relations in the Danube Monarchy, which arose as a supra-national state project after the Revolution of 1848. This conglomerate of numerous ethnic groups and nationalities, which, due to the new liberal constitution and national harmony of 1867 (despite certain conflicts and social controversies between individual powerful subjects, languages and ethnic regions), lived in relative harmony and may be regarded today as a prototype of the European Union. Besides, the article investigates the phenomena of multi- and pluriculturalism, concepts of “endogenous” and “exogenous” plurality. Particular emphasis has been laid on the issue of multilingualism, its diverse mechanisms and practices.

Фолклор НОБ-а, Револуције и социјалистичке изградње на страницама Народног стваралаштва – Folklora

Contributions on the National Liberation Struggle (Serb. Narodnooslobodilačka borba, NOB), the Revolution and post-war socialist reconstruction, as well as academic articles on Partisan and workers‘ folklore had a notable place in the Narodno stvaralaštvo – Folklor [Folk Creativity – Folklore] journal. They appear in as many as 42 issues (they are absent only in 6), especially in the 1960s and in the second half of the 1970s. Of these, the largest number of papers belongs to the field of folkloristics in the narrow sense of the word, which looks at oral heritage from the perspective of folk literature, and specifically focuses, for the most part, on the dominant genre of the middle part of the previous century, i.e., poetry. There are numerous articles that try to determine the boundaries of the genre and to define the poetry of NOB, the central place among which, when it comes to theoretical approaches, belongs to papers by Dušan Nedeljković, in which he examined the principles of the development of poetry. Genre typology is largely side-lined, and the majority of the articles are based on the overview of content and thematic groups, among which songs about Tito and workers’ folklore stand out. Speaking of other folklore disciplines, which are represented to a much lesser extent, ethnological, ethnomusicological and ethnochoreological contributions stand out. Looking at the small amount of folklore material present at the end of almost every issue also confirms the prominent position that the folklore of the NOB, the Revolution and socialist reconstruction had in the magazine. The importance of the Narodno stvaralaštvo – Folklor journal for the study of the abovementioned folk material lies mostly in encouraging the collection and study thereof, as well as insisting on the correlation of different folklore disciplines. Academic papers on this segment of oral heritage never reached a high level. They were more a reflection of the times, and part of the communist propaganda concerning the perfect state and social order, which is expected to be accompanied by an equally perfect oral expression. In the manner of political speeches of the time, not moving beyond superficial surveys and criteria of aesthetic criticism, sticking strictly to the path set by Dušan Nedeljković, for three decades folklorists repeated praises about works that represented a „qualitative leap“ compared to traditional folklore, but which they seldom thoroughly analysed. After the socio-political changes and the breakdown of Yugoslav ideas, the legacy of NOB was rejected and ignored. Today, however, modern folkloristics has begun a fundamental revision thereof, and scholars, from a temporal distance, freed from political and ideological restraints, are critically considering this folklore phenomenon and they are restoring it back to its place as part of the national cultural heritage.

O partizanskim pjesmama kao folklornoj glazbi u okviru hrvаtske etnomuzikologije i oko nje

The aim of this article is to contribute to the knowledge and understanding of partisan songs from the Second World War, through insight into the research on this topic that has been undertaken in Croatia. Reviewing the song collections and scholarly works of Croatian ethnomusicologists and experts from related disciplines, aside from information about partisan music folklore, reveals the research methods and paradigmatic frameworks that conditioned the approach to this research topic. It turns out that such works are very scarce and that the partisan song material appears only sporadically in song collections and localized research. Despite the criticism that by such an approach the research of this topic was practically avoided, reading the ethnomusicological papers it can be still recognized that certain songs were based on the regional characteristics of traditional folk music and that the ethnomusicologists and folklorists from Croatia, after the 1970s, approached this topic through the then modern paradigm of folklore music.
