In the 1860s a sharp controversy arose between the Baltic-German and Russian papers over the future of the Baltic provinces. The Baltic Germans would have the Latvians and Estonians integrated into the German language and frame of mind, whereas the Russians would have preferred them to rally around the Russian Empire, language and the Orthodox Church. It looked as if the future of these peripheral provinces, the national question included, was up to the local Estonians and Latvians. However, they could hardly overrule the interests of the Empire, which were now protected not only by strengthening of the positions of the Russian language and the Orthodox Church, but also of censorship. For this purpose, the German censors of Estonian and Latvian literature and press were replaced by Orthodox ones and censorship of publications was transferred from Tartu to Riga. The Central Board of Censorship collected information on the press editions published in Livonia and on their circulation in 1868–1870. Of the 30 periodicals published in that period, 18 were in German. Although the highest single circulation figure belonged to the Latvian weekly Mājas Viesis, the major German-language papers were issued daily, which made their impact times bigger than the local periodicals issued in Estonian, Latvian or Russian could ever dream of.

Varemed ja aiad. Barokk-kirjanduse esteetika Bernard Kangro Tartu-romaanides

Up to the present, Bernard Kangro’s Tartu novels („Springs of Ice” 1958, „The River Emajõgi” 1961, „Tartu” 1962, „The Stone Bridge” 1963, „The Black Book” 1965, and „Whirlwind of Fire” 1969), regarded as the core of his prose fiction, have been examined through a paradigm of literary movements. The goal of this article is to supplement and specify these so-called canonical treatments by an examination of the characteristics of baroque aesthetics as seen in Kangro’s last five Tartu novels. Among the features attributed to baroque literature are spatial representation of time, syncretism, a coexistence of different levels of meaning in a work, playfulness, and allegory. The allegorical scenes in Kangro’s Tartu novels create a particular dimension of timelessness, using situations that extend beyond the boundaries of the time of historical reality. The article provides a close analytical perspective on five allegorical scenes entitled Poor Yorick!, The Dance of the Flowers, The Garden, Spirit-Burning, and Ruins. The principal point of departure is the theory of allegory as articulated in Walter Benjamin’s habilitation thesis The Origin of German Tragic Drama (Ursprung des deutschen Trauerspiels, 1928). According to this theoretical approach, allegory is the form of expression specific to the age of the Baroque, which Benjamin sets in opposition to the classicist symbol. For Benjamin, the aesthetic symbol represents a totalizing, unifying, harmonizing image that falsifies historical experience; allegory, on the contrary, foregrounds historical experiences that are premature, and that cause sadness and torment, allowing to speak of history as the suffering of the world. In the allegorical scenes of Kangro’s Tartu novels, which seem to function as windows in the novels’ basically realistic space, characters „awaken” from sleep and become able to see the time they are living in, a time that remains „invisible” and incomprehensible to them in the reality represented by the base text of the novel. By means of the allegorical way of seeing, Kangro seems to succeed best at transmitting the feeling of living the time he depicts, the years of the Second World War, and to show history as not being a continual, unshakable, and straightforward chain of events, thus differing radically from the attempt of one of his characters, Soviet historian Naatan Üirike.

Mis juhtus Puhja kiriklas? Ühe vana tõlke algust otsides

The article addresses a late-17th-century translation of the Old Testament, tentatively attributed to two pastors, father and son Andreas and Adrian Virginius, who served in southern Estonia, which in those times was part of Livonia. The research question is: Which of the two variants of literary Estonian developed at the time, North-Estonian or South-Estonian,was the first target language for the Old Testament? Adrian Virginius mentions his and his father’s joint effort of translating the OT (up to the Book of Job) in the 1680s, without specifying the language variant. As to the rest of Andreas Virginius’ translations, those were, according to secondary sources, in South Estonian, but Adrian Virginius had close contacts with the reformers of literary North Estonian. The original manuscript of the OT translation has not survived, but we do have a slightly later copy, anonymous and undated, which is in North Estonian, yet bearing strong traces of South Estonian influence. In addition, we have two South Estonian OT translations from the late 18tth– early 19th century (a shortened printed version and a manuscript copy of 20 chapters of Exodus), whose wording is very close to that of the North Estonian translation attributed to father and son Virginius. The article discusses if and how it is possible to decide which of the two versions is the underlying translation and which is the derivative one. The method used involves linguistic and translation analysis complemented by historical and other extralinguistic information speaking for or against either hypothesis and, possibly, shed some light on the identity of the translator and of the copyist. Although the conclusion admits that the present stage of research offers more open questions than satisfactory answers, the article provides several clues for further studies.

Recepcja twórczości Stanisława Lema w Chinach i (nie)przetłumaczalność Cyberiady na język chiński

Stanisław Lem is a leading author of the Polish science fiction, a philosopher futurologist. His works attract great interest both in Poland and worldwide. His books have been translated into 52 foreign languages, including Chinese. The aim of this article is to discuss the reception of Lem’s works among the Chinese readers and to describe the translation problems encountered in the Chinese translation. The object of the study are the selected neologisms and archaisation created by Lem in Cyberiad, and their counterparts, or lack thereof, in the Chinese language. The provided examples demonstrate the possible equivalents in genetically very distant languages and describe attempts to search for the principle of compromise, a golden mean, between the fidelity and creativity during the translation of Cyberiad into the Chinese.

ИВАН ЧУЧУЛИГАТА – ИСТОРИОПИСНИ ЩРИХИ ВЪРХУ ЛЮБЕН-КАРАВЕЛОВАТА ПОВЕСТ „ПРОГРЕСИСТ“

The article interprets a little-known literary work by Lyuben Karavelov - the novelette "Progressive". It was written in 1875 and the prototype of the main character is the Revival activist Ivan Kasabov. The relations between Lyuben Karavelov and Ivan Kasabov until 1875 are described in the context of the political movements of the Bulgarian emigration against the Ottoman rule. The motives for the creation of the sharp satire against Ivan Kasabov have been systematized. The main plot lines of the work are also highlighted. The circumstances surrounding the marginalization of the novelette are indicated. Ivan Kasabov's biography after 1878 is briefly traced, showing the unfoundedness of Karavelov's assessment of his friend from the time of their work together. The article does not exaggerate the role of literary narratives in assessing historical circumstances, but through the fictional text it adds new touches to the image of two of the most famous political functionaries of the Bulgarian Revival epoch.

One Thousand and One Nights at the Transnational Crossroads

One Thousand and One Nights - also known in English as the Arabian Nights - is a compilation of folkloric tales, with anonymous author(s), dating as far back as the 14th or 15th century but assumed to be rooted much earlier, perhaps the 10th century in its Arabic version and even earlier in its lost Persian embodiment. This authorless work was introduced to the West first in the 18th and later in the 19th century by its French and English Orientalist translators by whom it was brought to life reborn in an alien environment with radically different perceptions and receptions. Since then, The Nights has become one of the most global and yet misunderstood works across various artistic versions besides literature. The narrative framework tells us tales that are widely varied and spread in various regions with their historical and cultural backgrounds, including Persia, Arabia, India, Egypt, China, and so on. On this account, this paper aims to highlight that the multiplicity and hybridity of voices, histories, and cultures position the work at a transnational crossroads. Without dismissing the Oriental aspects of the work, this paper emphasizes that the adaptation and appropriation of such an elusive work with a convoluted history cannot be discussed authoritatively (either through Western Oriental or Post-Colonial or Islamic perspectives) when there is no one author or manuscript or no one culture and nation as a reference point. Each translation or adaptation helps the work expand its transnational network, interconnect old and new, East and West together, bridge differences and continue to address the questions of cultural transformation.

Between Two Worlds: Shakespeare the Ordinary Man and Artist

Jude Morgan’s novel, The Secret Life of William Shakespeare, is a work of biofiction that deals with the playwright’s life from shortly before he met Anne Hathaway up to the year 1603, highlighting private aspects such as the relationships with his family and friends – and even his rivals. At the same time, the novel offers an insight into the Elizabethan world in which William Shakespeare lived and rose to fame, actually a pretext to bring to the foreground timeless issues which characterise today’s world as well. The portrayal offered by Morgan is, therefore, one that aims to reconcile the two personas of the Bard – the family man and the poet and playwright. The present paper aims to analyse how those aspects are put forward by the novel, relying on features of postmodernism and the biographical novel, as the author attempts to fill in the gaps in Shakespeare’s life narrative. What is more, emphasis is laid on the relative concept of ‘truth’ and how it is deconstructed in the shaping of this particular version of Shakespeare’s story.

Displaced: Canadian Mindscapes in Margaret Atwood's Alias Grace

Simply put, hyperreality is used to denote something that does not yet exist in the sense of being undeniably demonstrable. According to Jean Baudrillard in Simulacra and Simulation (1981), hyperreality is a state where reality has been replaced by simulacra, meaning that what is real and what is fictional is indistinguishable. Equally, hyperreality starts as soon as one replaces the question of ‘if’ by ‘when’. Therein, in Margaret Atwood’s Alias Grace, it becomes quite difficult to establish whether or not Grace Marks is innocent, pure and wrongly accused of the horrible murders of her employer Thomas Kinnear and his housekeeper, Nancy Montgomery. Likewise, Grace's memory (which, strangely enough, is referred to in terms of its absence rather than its presence since she is supposedly suffering from amnesia) is some sort of virtual reality, an entire world in itself, where Grace can appear to be anything she wants to be. By constantly overlapping the Canadian landscape, Grace’s subconscious enables a window into the world within, one of the past, the present and the future, some sort of interface between three different psychological entities with their corresponding and symbolic representations of the landscape. The present paper looks into the novel from behind the lens of the Canadian landscape (although scarce in occurrences) as a metonymy of hyperreal mindscapes: doubly displaced both geographically (she is an Irish immigrant), and mentally (she seems to be manifesting a form of multiple personality disorder), Grace simultaneously exists in hyperreal mindscapes, mimicking and replicating, stating and questioning, challenging readers who are left adrift in a textual world where the boundaries between reality and representation become blurred.

Cultural Relativism and "Our Way of Life"

Like Meursault in The Stranger (1942) by Albert Camus, the 34-year-old protagonist of Patricia Highsmith’s The Tremor of Forgery (1969) is almost certain of having killed an Arab in self-defence but feels no remorse for the deed except as it is judged by other Americans within his orbit of Western influence. While visiting Tunisia on what is apparently his first trip overseas, novelist Howard Ingham wrestles with the alterity of an Arab culture during the Six-Day War in the Middle East while at the same time criticizing the parochialism of a countryman who broadcasts propaganda about “Our Way of Life.” Ingham soon embraces, albeit equivocally, a perspective of cultural relativism, but his doing so is largely the dodge of a doubly dispossessed stranger in a strange land. Tremor thus figures as one of Highsmith’s “texts of exile,” as Fiona Peters has called it, that ends with Ingham’s anticlimactic return home to renew a relationship with his former wife.

In the second half of the nineteenth century, writers and poets played a huge role in shaping and sustaining the spirit of a nation suffering under the yoke of partition. Literature was a treasury of free thought, sustaining the spirit of the nation and encouraging the struggle to maintain Polishness. The space was provided by literary fiction and the personal involvement of its creators in social events. Maria Konopnicka was actively involved in this trend. Raised in a patriotic atmosphere, she was sensitive to any restriction of the country’s freedom. Her upbringing was accompanied by memories and worship of the heroic past of her father and uncle Ignacy Wasiłowski, with whom she corresponded for almost twenty years. Her love for Poland and sensitivity to the cause of her freedom run through the letters she wrote to her relative with tenderness and sincerity. They are a mine of information about the sociopolitical and cultural life of the post-Civil War era and bring invaluable information about Konopnicka’s political involvement and her commitment to the struggle for the resurrection of the nation.

O istorie a literaturii române contemporane: impact și receptare

At the beginning of 2021, Mihai Iovănel published Istoria literaturii române contemporane – 1990-2020, the first Romanian history of literature that scrutinizes the post-communist period. Another novelty brought by this book is that it proposes an ideological approach to the literary field, with a strong (post)Marxist bias, in accordance and synchronicity with the global trend in the humanistic field, but not very popular in the Romanian cultural space. No wonder it was, perhaps, the most commented upon literary study of the past years, and most of the reviewers and critics focused on this controversial approach towards contemporary literature, favouring or rejecting its validity. This paper tries to establish the influence of Iovănelʼs ideological approach on the interpretation of contemporary literature and the aesthetic validity of his work. At the same time, it deals with the impact this book had in academic and literary circles, surveying the recent opinions and judgments on the book and the interplay of ideological/aesthetic arguments of the reviewers. The analysis shows that, more often than not, the reviewersʼ ideological positioning is relevant and influential upon their judgments, even if they manage to preserve their scientific objectivity. The paper also stresses the importance of this pioneering work and the shift in perspective it proposes, together with its limits (sometimes accepted by the author), and it establishes its relevance as a starting point for similar studies in the future.

The object of the author’s reflection is the status of the empathy category as an interdisciplinary research category and its relation to the experience issue. It is the problem that is particularly emphasized in the literary discourse, for which an indispensable context is cultural and anthropological discourse, the synthesis of which determines the transdisciplinary nature of research in the category of experience and empathy. The sketch is a cross-section of the most important thoughts that shape the postmodern reflection on these areas. First of all, the ways of the assumption applying of research on empathy - based on the ethical return - in Polish language education- was subjected to the consideration. The last part of this paper was devoted to the presentation of possible activities related to the reading of The Witcher Andrzej Sapkowski at Polish language lessons, striving to problematize the problem of the experience of otherness, and therefore the mechanisms of expanding the receiving empathic sensitivity.

I argue for amazing values of the tradition of romanticism. I pay attention to connections between this tradition and the present. I write about necessary changes in reading romantic literature at school. In my point of view the most important is not to talk only about national values. It is really necessary in Poland. We must not continue to think that patriotism means only fighting with other people. Forming students’ national identity is one of the main duties at school but the romantic way of understanding patriotism has to be changed. It is very dangerous in our century. Many researchers also write about it. It is a very important problem of literary studies. I also present suggestions to work with Reduta Ordona in primary school and in junior high school. There are different ideas presented in methodical literature as well as my own suggestions.

The article deals with lexico-semantic features of colour denotations in the Azerbaijani language. The concept of colour in the language, in particular, is used as a symbolic phenomenon; one can assert that linguists treat the etymological features of the colour concept with great interest. The article points out that the colour in the language is closely linked to the cultural heritage of the people, which is reflected in the works of the Asian poet Nizami Ganjavi. The association expressed by colour refers to the source of origin of a particular colour, which may be, for instance, a specific object or place. The meaning conveyed by colour carries a symbolic and emotional value in a specific socio-cultural context, providing the context for the literary work and its interpretation.

Popular Culture Wars: Racism, Gender and Empire and the Transformations of 21st Century Capitalism

Isaac Asimov’s Foundation and Frank Herbert’s Dune were considered to be “unadaptable” works. This paper critically discusses Villeneuve’s Dune and the TV series created by AppleTV+, a revision of the “Foundation”, overviewing the controversies surrounding the recreation and transformation of these “grand narratives”. The author considers that these transmutations are relevant not only for their storytelling alterations, but also for the transformations of “cinematic capitalism”. Proposing as a working concept the notion of chimeric capitalist cinema, the paper also brings into the debate other productions that disclose ideological mutations, like Rings of Power and House of the Dragon, considering how contemporary cinematic modes of production are changing.
