PANAIT ISTRATI. THE DISSIDENT AS A MEDIATOR BETWEEN THE EAST AND THE WEST

PANAIT ISTRATI. THE DISSIDENT AS A MEDIATOR BETWEEN THE EAST AND THE WEST

Author(s): Gergana Nacheva / Language(s): English Issue: 1/2018

The proposed text tries to read Panait Istrati's book "The Confession of a Loser" ("To the other flame or after 16 months in the USSR") - through modern historical, political and ideological paradigms of the 20th century, as well as the role of the intellectual as a mediator in the constant East-West dialogue. It shows the function of the intellectuals in both Western and Eastern societies, their utopian visions, clashes, disillusions and disappointments, their support for Bolshevism and Stalinism in totalitarian Russia in the 20s and the 30s of the 20th century. All this is examined through the optics of our present day and the historical context.

IDENTITY AND BELONGING: INSIDER/OUTSIDER IN ED HUSAIN’S THE ISLAMIST

IDENTITY AND BELONGING: INSIDER/OUTSIDER IN ED HUSAIN’S THE ISLAMIST

Author(s): Jillian Curr / Language(s): English Issue: 1/2016

Since the events of 9/11 and the so-called „war on terror‟ „Muslim‟ has been used synonymously with„terrorist‟ dividing particularly those Muslims living in the West into either „good‟ Muslims or „bad‟Muslims. Ed Husain uses in his memoir The Islamist this dichotomy, as well as that of the „witness‟ in presenting himself as a credible analyst in answering why some young Muslims become attracted to fundamentalist Islamist groups hostile to the West. The author is a second generation British Asian Muslim who rejected the Sufi political quietism of his parents for the revolutionary ideologies of Islamic „idéologues‟ such as Abu A‟la Mawdudi, Sayyid Qutb and particularly Taqi al-Din al Nahbani, joining Hizb-ut-Tahrir as an active member. Husain‟s story is one of a fractured past, manhood, the search for an authentic Islam and becoming British.

Putovanje i reprezentacije identiteta i alteriteta u dječjem romanu od početka 20. st. do 1941.

Putovanje i reprezentacije identiteta i alteriteta u dječjem romanu od početka 20. st. do 1941.

Author(s): Lana Molvarec / Language(s): Croatian Issue: 2/2016

The intention of this paper is to research how travel narratives construct representations of identity and alterity in selected children's novels published from 1907. to 1941. The paper aims contextualised, local and political reading instead of pedagogical or impressionist-esthetical approach. A main thesis is that production of knowledge through discursive practices constitutes identity or alterity of characters as well as the knowledge depends on relations of power and its distribution within social and cultural field. Thus, I differentiate, using R. Williams's terminology, residual, dominant and emergent forms of discursive practices that product identity and alterity in analysed novels.

SUBVERZIVNA ULOGA MUZIKE U PROCESU REKONSTRUKCIJE IDENTITETA U ROMANU "LJUBAV" TONI MORISON

SUBVERZIVNA ULOGA MUZIKE U PROCESU REKONSTRUKCIJE IDENTITETA U ROMANU "LJUBAV" TONI MORISON

Author(s): Ivana S. Jovanović Nikolić / Language(s): Serbian Issue: 77/2022

Growing up surrounded by music, Toni Morrison “inherits” a family- shared relationship towards this form of art, as a “tool” for preservation of one’s own history as well as of the communal history. Morrison understands the role of music as a valuable tool for the revision and reconstruction of identity in a system ruled by racial differentiation. The author has, on numerous occasions, pointed out that music “informs” her i.e. that her attempts to reconstruct its structure in her writing have led to a rise of literature where there are “more rather than less opportunities” (Stepto, 1977: 488). This literature is: sophisticated, demanding and yet so available. That type of literature, the type that upsets its reader, possesses a one-of-a-kind rhythm; a rhythm whose culmination is a sort of a bang, a unique beat which exists on a level underneath a linguistic one; that beat, so energetic and yet so balanced, must be heard rather than read. This type of literature offers the readers a sort of power – an opportunity to develop and progress i.e. overcome the existing limitations of its being. The novel Love, is, among other things, the author’s attempt to comprehend the why and how of love betrayal. She also deals with the issue of female identity and position of women at times when the African-American community was “doing its best” to “imitate” the patriarchal model of family life of white men. By bringing in the rhythm, repetition and musical patters as those appearing in jazz and blues, the author is transforming the language of its novel so that the characters are empowered to independently talk about their experi- ence. By changing the “stale” narrative forms, the author is “securing” the unity of African-American community and the right to their own identity. Furthermore, she is “reinforcing the idea of love as a space where one could negotiate freedom” (Schappell, 1992:83).

Author(s): Jelena R. Vilotijevic / Language(s): Serbian Issue: 77/2022

In the postmodern, technologized world, construction and realization of reality becomes a key issue. As a potential answer to the issue, classic cyber- punk science fiction literature formulates its own vision of reality and humanity by radically redefining the relationship between the two. Postmodern literary texts question conventional perception of reality and undermine traditional view of subjectivity and representation by establishing a narrative framework where boundaries between reality and representation are extremely blurred. Reality, comprised of simulated images, can no longer be clearly defined, and humanity and identity are subjected to the influence of new simulation technology. This paper aims to establish and examine the relationship between space, technology, and identity in order to offer an insight into the process of constructing cyberspace as well as look through Baudrillard’s simulacra and Virilio’s theory of space-time relationship in the world controlled by “speed.” The paper will also strive to prove the following hypothesis: cyberspace can be seen as a heterotopic zone where hu- man identity can be redefined.

Rolul vitalismului în depăşirea liricii simboliste

Rolul vitalismului în depăşirea liricii simboliste

Author(s): Corneliu Barborică / Language(s): Romanian Issue: 1/2014

Author(s): Stefan Lindinger / Language(s): German Issue: 22/2022

Author(s): Radoslav Radev / Language(s): Bulgarian Issue: 3/2022

The study highlights the stylistic features of Bulgarian prose from the 20th century. Basic views on stylistics are presented as a bridge between linguistics and literary studies. Basic types of context are described. Two more complete features of style stand out - modal and argumentative. The individual stylistic means of the artists are derived and are related to the specific historical context and the respective aesthetics.

Author(s): Ludmila Mindova / Language(s): Bulgarian Issue: 1/2022

The text is concentrated on the semantic net of a few main topics: face, difference, and indifference (ataraxia), personality and impersonality, following and spying. Three novels which represent different totalitarian versions are in the focus of the analysis. The parallels point out the propinquity between the novels and their conception of the human “being and time”, and especially the phenomenon of the face. The face never marks only its physical manifestation. It is an essential divine mark of infinite love and grace. It is a place of supreme ordeal and supreme feast. The place where the man has to do the most important choice in his life.

Author(s): Maria Pileva / Language(s): Bulgarian Issue: 1/2022

The article examines two of the first translations in modern Bulgarian language of works of fiction by English classical authors Daniel Defoe and Charles Dickens. Made from adaptations, they do not present their writers in full, but rather their Germanised and Russianised versions, which significantly change their reception. Attention is drawn to the problems of translation in the mid-19th century, as well as the fact that Young Robinson remains in manuscript, and the first translation of Dickens' A Christmas Carol was recognised as his work only at the beginning of this century due to the change in title.

Author(s): Miglena Nikolchina / Language(s): Bulgarian Issue: 1/2022

The article reconstructs the evolution of Kristeva’s major term signifiance in her endeavour to conceptualise literature and art as processes translating the continuous making and unmaking of the subject. This evolution involves the shift from Kristeva’s early focus predominantly on poetry towards her later emphasis on the novel (Proust and Colette), which led her to the concept of transubstantiation as “metaphore become flesh”.

Author(s): Karine Rouquet-Brutin / Language(s): Bulgarian Issue: 1/2022

This paper is based on a unique teaching experience with young foreign researchers from all geographical and linguistic backgrounds, who were brought together around the texts of French-speaking thinkers, including those of Julia Kristeva, in the "Writing Research in French" workshops that I led at the Cité Internationale Universitaire de Paris. In the light of the concept of symbolic matricide theorised by Julia Kristeva in Melanie Klein: Madness, Matricide as Pain and Creativity (2000), the paper questions the epiphanic moments provoked by the reading of texts in which Kristeva describes the suffering of abandoning her native Bulgarian for an adopted language, inscribing matricide, however painful, at the heart of the experience of rebirth in another language.

Author(s): Mihaela Moraru / Language(s): Russian Issue: 3/2012
