Irlandzka kwestia narodowa w twórczości muzycznej zespołu The Dubliners

Irlandzka kwestia narodowa w twórczości muzycznej zespołu The Dubliners

Author(s): Adam Romejko / Language(s): Polish Issue: 31/2024

The most effective tool for building national consciousness is to find a negative reference point in the form of a foreign nation or state. For the Irish, these are the English, who are often referred to as Anglo-Saxons or even Saxons, and Britain. The history of the Irish is marked by English oppression, which during the Reformation gained another factor in the form of religious persecution. Consequently, Catholicism became the hallmark of the Irish, and this in a situation where there was no shortage of Irish of the Protestant faith who did not identify with the English/ British crown. The Irish were eagerly portrayed as a backward people, and hence the folk music popular among them was looked down upon in the same way. The merit of the band The Dubliners, formed in 1962, was to strengthen Irish national pride – many came to believe that there was no need to imitate what was English or American. It is enough to remain oneself. In the songs performed, The Dubliners refer to important events in the history of the Irish struggle for independence. One can point to the Revolution of 1798, the Great Famine (1845–1849), the Easter Rising (1916) and the unrest in Northern Ireland in the decades following World War II. Many of the characters appearing in the ballads performed by The Dubliners, even a dog named Master McGrath, are historical in nature. To this day, songs arranged by The Dubliners are regarded as exemplary.

COVID-19 and Ripples in Time

COVID-19 and Ripples in Time

Author(s): Luba Pirgova-Morgan / Language(s): English Issue: 4/2022

COVID-19 represents a new era, a time of crisis, and a time of transitions. One of the biggest impacts of the pandemic globally on both individuals and groups has been the transformation of our perception of time. How we perceive time and how time permeates through every aspect of our lived realities during COVID-19, inevitably has brought great changes to research methodologies and approaches used as part of the entirety of the research process: from funding applications, research design, and implementations to collaborations, dissemination, and impact activities beyond project conclusion. The research presented shares key findings and insights from the PRAXIS Project: COVID-19 Strand. A project that examined in depth, via surveys and interviews, Arts and Humanities (A&H) research during COVID-19, with a focus on the pandemic impacts on research practices experienced by academics from the cohort of more than 300 projects funded through the Global Challenges Research Fund (GCRF) and Newton Fund. The impact of COVID-19 on research methodologies, scientific challenges as well as new found opportunities and innovations will be presented through the prism of time. Time will be discussed in terms of the speed of time, content of time, importance of time, lost time, found time, and changes in time, and what all those iterations of time can tell us about the transformation of the research process during the pandemic, but also beyond. The discussion presented aims to show the lessons learned, challenge some of the existing scales of values, design desirables, and varied outputs, while also considering the changes to research as a whole and how to look forward during these unprecedented times.

Global Pandemic and Local Communities

Global Pandemic and Local Communities

Author(s): Albena Nakova-Manolova,Elya Tzaneva / Language(s): English Issue: 4/2022

The COVID-19 pandemic has created a new and unprecedented situation in the world at large and the smaller national, regional, and local communities. This text focuses on the last-mentioned, offering an analysis of data from interviews and focus-group discussions conducted in two Bulgarian localities that were among the first to be quarantined and to react after the pandemic was declared: the towns of Bansko and Karnobat in Bulgaria. Accordingly, for the two mentioned settlements, the contexts of reaction at the community level are examined and compared with those at the levels of the family, kinfolk/neighbourhood, and rural/urban community. This perspective allows tracing how the pandemic has disrupted the normality of existence and created a cognitive imbalance in people’s perceptions, in response to which corresponding concepts and explanations of the disease and the pandemic are built to help people cope with the stress of the unknown. Processes occurring in individual cognitive structures, as well as attitudes towards institutions and collective human communities, are explored, and ways of finding a rational explanation and possible solution to the pandemic problem are studied.

COVID-19 Pandemic Prevention Efforts and Economic Recovery Path of Sub-Saharan Africa

COVID-19 Pandemic Prevention Efforts and Economic Recovery Path of Sub-Saharan Africa

Author(s): Thanh Nga Kieu / Language(s): English Issue: 4/2022

Like other regions in the world, Africa has also suffered a significant impact from the COVID-19 pandemic. The COVID-19 pandemic has disrupted supply chains, isolated societies, and closed countries, creating unprecedented challenges. Using the qualitative research method, this study will describe, explain and discuss to clarify the research question: What is Africa’s fighting against COVID-19 with focus on Sub-Saharan region? What are the impacts of COVID-19 on the region and its prospects for recovery? The results show that, unlike previous outbreaks, during the COVID-19 pandemic Africa played an important role in gathering scientific knowledge that helped shape the global response. Hundreds of scientists have been working continuously to sequence strains of the SARS-CoV-2 virus. Even in the early months of the COVID-19 pandemic, African States reacted quickly and coordinatedly, so that the negative health impacts were minimised, beyond all previous forecasts. These experiences will certainly benefit the world – as demonstrated by South African scientists who were the first to discover the Omicron variant in November 2021. However, these efforts can be phased out due to the lack of vaccines, outdated health systems, and the effects of the pandemic on the economy. It can be the most severe barrier in Africa’s recovery path. so that the negative health impacts were minimised

The First Quarantined Settlements in Bulgaria

The First Quarantined Settlements in Bulgaria

Author(s): Yelis Erolova,Ilina Nacheva / Language(s): English Issue: 4/2022

Can we call the COVID-19 pandemic a ‘crisis’? The first cases of coronavirus infections were announced in Bulgaria in the spring of 2020. Here, as in many other countries, various measures were introduced to prevent the spread of the disease. At the same time, the public received contradictory messages from politicians and medical experts, which led to confusion and uneven levels of risk awareness in Bulgarian society. Our paper is focused on the country’s first quarantined settlements: the town of Bansko (a mountain winter resort) and the village of Panicherevo, Gurkovo region. We aim to explore the perceptions, reactions and coping strategies of the local communities with regard to the pandemic and in particular to the lockdown. The specificities of the two models of interpretation and management of the situation are outlined and compared with the definition of ‘crisis’. Examples of effective coping mechanisms related to the two cases are described. The methodology includes qualitative research methods – field study with interviews, focus group discussions and observation of the behaviour of local communities (conducted in 2021 under conditions of an ongoing national state of emergency), and analysis of official documents and media publications.

Author(s): Paweł Sygowski / Language(s): Polish Issue: 1/2011

Dane statystyczne dotyczące ludności żydowskiej w Polsce są istotnym elementem badania ich historii na tym terenie. Lata 1800-1825 to czas zanikania kahałów (m.in. Kalinowszczyzna, Nowy Kazimierz, Zbyczyn, Włostowo) na terenie województwa lubelskiego w wyniku ruchów demograficznych i zmiany przepisów administracyjnych. W tym samym czasie powstawały nowe gminy (m.in. w Puławach, Wąwolicy, Kamionce, Michowie). Nieopublikowany dotąd materiał z 1819 r., będący własnością Archiwum Państwowego w Lublinie, jest istotnym uzupełnieniem aktualnej wiedzy o dynamice demograficznej społeczności żydowskiej ówczesnej Lubelszczyzny.

Проучване ролята на образованието за икономическото развитие на регионите в България

Author(s): Nikolay Stoenchev,Yana Hrischeva / Language(s): Bulgarian Issue: 5/2024

The present research is dedicated to studying the influence of the educational structure of the employed persons on the economic results achieved. Comprehensive and reliable statistics by area have been used. An integral coefficient of structural differences by educational degrees was used, calculated by area, for which, with the help of a linear correlation coefficient, a connection was sought with the created gross added value of one employed person by area. The obtained results show a stimulating effect of high levels of education on the achieved economic results. This beneficial effect of the relative share of employed persons with higher education is particularly strong. It is concluded that the restructuring of economic activities in the territory in favor of knowledge-intensive processes and technologies would have a favorable impact on labor productivity and would contribute to the sustainable development of the territory and to the improvement of the living status of the population.

Природонаучната грамотност в учебните програми по човекът и природата и биология и здравно образование

Author(s): Isa Hadjiali,Teodora Kolarova / Language(s): Bulgarian Issue: 5/2024

The article describes a study focused on assessing in what extent main aspects of scientific literacy are represented in the school curricula of the subjects The Human and the nature” V – VI grade and Biology and health education VII – X grade (junior high school stage and first high school stage). In line with its purpose, a content analysis was used as an appropriate method of this particular research. The analysis was directed on four dimensions of the scientific literacy – cognitive-epistemic, functional, social and metacognitive. To investigate how and to what extent these dimensions are presented in the curricula, we analyzed three components: 1) expected outcomes of the training in the subject by areas of competence; 2) expected outcomes by themes of school content for each subject; 3) activities and cross-curricular connections for acquisition of key competences. The results of the study showed that curricula for both stages placed a greater emphasis on the functional dimension of the scientific literacy (skills and abilities) than the cognitive aspect (factual and conceptual knowledge) and the social dimension (attitudes). But at the same time, other valuable aspects of the scientific literacy such as epistemic knowledge (e.g., knowledge of the nature of science) and metacognitive dimension (e.g., metacognitive knowledge and metacognitive skills) are much less represented in these curricular documents.

Intensive Wellness Program – A Method for Optimizing Motor Condition

Author(s): Darinka Ignatova / Language(s): English Issue: 5/2024

The present material derives theoretical foundations with an emphasis on the development of the motor state, based on the application of an intensive wellness program. The scientific state of teaching methodology in physical education and sports in the first high school stage of the educational degree is monitored. An intensive program for the development of general motor conditions according to the Tabata interval method has been approved in the first high school stage to achieve a high educational standard and increase the efficiency in motor-oriented training. Statistical verification of the effectiveness of a tested intensive wellness program with the organization of an experimental, ascertaining, training, and control stage is presented. Scientifically based conclusions and generalizations are drawn. The purpose of the research is to create an intensive wellness program for the development and improvement of general motor condition, based on the Tabata method in the first high school stage, by implementing and proving its practical effectiveness through testing in the PES1 training consisting of an author’s complex of motor exercises, for wellness-interval training according to the Tabata method. The subject of analysis is the indicators allowing harmonization and individualization of the differences in the students’ motor potential between the two target groups – experimental and control, as well as establishing the effectiveness of the practical application of the implemented intensive wellness program. Scientifically based conclusions will allow establishing changes in the number of students who have covered a high educational standard, as well as improving the effectiveness of motor-oriented learning. The object of the present experimental research is the learning process in the discipline of physical education and sports in the first high school stage of the educational degree. The research scope of the present study is 50 students from two classes of the eighth grade, divided into 25 students each in two target groups – experimental and control. All examined individuals are in good physical and mental condition. To derive a relationship between tracked motor indicators, an analysis of dynamics was applied through mathematical statistical processing to establish variation and correlation coefficients. The application of the innovative technology took place within the academic year 2022/23.

Remembrance Days in European Union – between oblivion, national manifestations and an European narrative?

Author(s): Katarzyna Suszkiewicz,Elisabeth Büttner / Language(s): English Issue: 6/2016

W ostatnich latach z okazji rocznic zorganizowano wiele inicjatyw. Artykuł przedstawia analizę 3 różnych wydarzeń związanych z oficjalnymi obchodami trzech międzynarodowych dni pamięci w Polsce, Niemczech i Francji. Są to Dzień Pamięci o Holokauście, Międzynarodowy Dzień Pamięci o Holokauście oraz Europejski Dzień Pamięci o Sprawiedliwych. Wybrane kraje reprezentują różne doświadczenia historyczne wojny i okoliczności, w jakich przebiegał proces pamięci zbiorowej.

Author(s): Teodora Savova / Language(s): Bulgarian Issue: 4/2024

An individual's individual needs are not always personal and can be influenced by cultural or social conditions. In other words, individual needs, motives, and media use are related to external factors that are not always under the individual's control. These external factors act as constraints on the use of a particular media and influence the availability of other non-media alternatives. Furthermore, the more alternatives an individual has to satisfy his or her needs, the less he or she will depend on a particular media

The article focuses on the history and characteristics of ecofeminism. Ecofeminism emerged and developed as a movement against the patriarchal system, which was seen as the cause of both gender inequality and the unjust exploitation of the environment. The original ecofeminist vision of the 1970s, which linked women to nature through the relationship between structures of domination over them, and the subsequent development of the movement are examined. A historical overview of activist manifestations within ecofeminism is provided. Ecofeminist critiques are also analysed. The penetration of ecofeminist ideas into everyday practices and lifestyles will be examined.

Анализ на подходите за визуализиране на информацията чрез комбиниране на текст и изображения

Author(s): Desislava Baeva / Language(s): Bulgarian Issue: 5s/2024

The visualization of education and the digital presentation of the studied material are already an inseparable part of modern education. In the new innovative world, young people have online access to vast amounts of information, which in most cases is superficial, unscientific, highly visual and organized in small spots of text. Therefore, a better knowledge of the factors that influence the perception of information is needed – good structure, engaging content, quality visualization. These factors shape how people process and remember presented knowledge. The present scientific development describes a study conducted using an eye tracking system, which visualizes the orientation of attention with different structuredness of the presented learning material. Research indicates the most appropriate structuring of text::images elements. The analysis made can serve as a guide for tutors when preparing learning resources; indicate how the informative material should be organized, enriched with appropriate pictures or infographics.

Author(s): Julia Doncheva,Galina Ivanova,Dilshod Tojievich Oblokulov / Language(s): English Issue: 5s/2024

The publication comments on the use of information and communication technologies for students with special educational needs. The educational process also includes the digital environment, which is new for this age period, but extremely interesting and easily digestible. In this regard, the homelands in the 21st century cannot and should not be educated and brought up with the means of their parents or ancestors. Educational institutions, from the very beginning of the introduction of digital technologies until now, have been and are keeping up with the new. The teaching staff, in addition to being rejuvenated in terms of age with young teachers, recently graduated from the universities, where specific training is carried out for methodology and work with ICT, but also constantly upgrade their knowledge, skills and competences in this aspect. The students of the new century have new sensations, needs, motivation, which all of us working in this sector need to comply with and implement effectively, for their sake – the future of the Bulgarian nation.
