European Union’s Research Policies and the Social Sciences: Lessons Learnt and Future Prospect for the Western Balkans

European Union’s Research Policies and the Social Sciences: Lessons Learnt and Future Prospect for the Western Balkans

Author(s): Barbara Hoenig / Language(s): English Issue: 1 (2)/2010

Although the social sciences have been shaped by the rise of the modern nation state, until recently they have been confronted with deep transformations that European societies undergo nowadays. Moreover, they themselves are remarkably influenced by the process of European integration. In this paper, first, an investigation of EU science policies indicates how European frameworks of research specify, restrict and support their role and position within the European Research Area. Second, there are represented results of a comparative analysis of scientific journals in Slovenia and Austria displaying central topics of a growing European stock of knowledge. Third, focused interviews with sociologists in two states show how they actually identify an European dimension of social science. Conclusions are drawn in respect to the expected EU integration of actual and potential candidate countries at the Western Balkans. It is suggested that the EU dynamics of enlargement and integration lead to the negotiation of new boundaries in intellectual knowledge production as well, as manifest in consequences of European research policies, investigated with regard to indicators for scientific development.

Author(s): Renata Piasecka‑Strzelec / Language(s): Polish Issue: 2 (258)/2024

This study is a case study presenting the most important development trends of contemporary global news agencies on the example of three leading global institutions: Associated Press (AP), Reuters and Agence France‑Presse (AFP). The research focuses on changes resulting from the adaptation of global news agencies to the advanced stage of digital culture and the needs of a dynamically developing information society. The impact of phenomena such as disinformation and the COVID-19 pandemic has been taken into account. The article analyses the scientific literature and uses a qualitative analysis of the content of Internet messages. The research materials include sources made available by the discussed institutions on official websites and press publications published by industry portals. The results of the research made it possible to show the impact of new technologies on the reach, content, and distribution of agency services. The forms of activity and standards of work in global news agencies typical of the beginning of the third decade of the 21st century were pointed out, emphasizing the new functions and the breakthrough importance of addressing the offer to young recipients. In the context of the fourth industrial revolution, the issue of the increasing share of artificial intelligence in editorial work was raised.

Czy czasopisma konserwatywne Gazeta Polska i Najwyższy Czas! pogłębiają rasistowskie schematy myślenia? Kryzys migracyjny na granicy polsko-białoruskiej w świetle teorii Étienne’a Balibara

Czy czasopisma konserwatywne Gazeta Polska i Najwyższy Czas! pogłębiają rasistowskie schematy myślenia? Kryzys migracyjny na granicy polsko-białoruskiej w świetle teorii Étienne’a Balibara

Author(s): Wiktoria Nylec / Language(s): Polish Issue: 2 (258)/2024

The aim of the research was to determine whether Polish conservative opinion magazines (Gazeta Polska and Najwyższy Czas!) may be responsible for the deepening of racist patterns of thinking. The research context included the issue of migration from the countries of the Middle East and Africa based on the example of events on the Polish‑Belarusian border. The main research method was content analysis, including discourse analysis (media framework). The research sample consisted of a total of 109 texts (GP 86 and NC 23). In formulating the research theses, the theory of the French philosopher Étienne Balibar was used, especially considerations regarding racism and the concept of border. The research results gave a positive answer to the main research problem. The comparative analysis showed similarities between both magazines in terms of the rhetoric used towards migrants (anti-immigrant narrative, the “us-them” division, linguistic treatments that are part of the exclusion strategy), as well as the multiplicity of the border topos, which is understood as: the external border of the territory of Poland, the zoopolitical border and the mental border. The element that differentiated the examined magazines was the political context – GP supported PiS policy and used the conflict to deepen internal polarization, while NC criticized the United Right government’s actions.

Broadcasts by Aleksandra Stypułkowska for Radio Free Europe’s Polish Broadcasting Service

Broadcasts by Aleksandra Stypułkowska for Radio Free Europe’s Polish Broadcasting Service

Author(s): Evelina Kristanova / Language(s): English Issue: 2 (258)/2024

The purpose of the article is to show, based on selected examples, the journalistic and radio broadcast activity of Aleksandra Stypułkowska (alias Jadwiga Mieczkowska) for Radio Free Europe’s Polish Broadcasting Service, and to present the most important issues she raised on air, along with her unique way of argumentation. The study analysed audio and press sources. Available issues of the monthly magazine Na Antenie (1963–1989) were reviewed for her statements by applying a press analysis method in tandem with qualitative research. Because of the editorial requirements that the article had to meet, only certain press materials were included, and a number of news and literary programmes were excluded; these omissions will be addressed in a separate paper. However, some audio sources available on RFE’s website were also selected applying a media content analysis method; namely, those which the author finds original as regards the subject matter and journalistic genre (in line with the case study method), and which make it possible to present a variety of issues raised by Stypułkowska, including her views on legal, socio-political and religious matters. This study can therefore be seen as a prelude to further research.

THE ETHNOCULTURAL ASPECT IN THE ARTICLES OF THE NEWSPAPER “ALBANIA”

THE ETHNOCULTURAL ASPECT IN THE ARTICLES OF THE NEWSPAPER “ALBANIA”

Author(s): Albnora Musa Bakiu,Hiriet Ziberi / Language(s): English Issue: 22-23/2024

The state of the Albanians in the end of the XIX century became even more worse from the Otoman Empire which not only kept their territories under their rule but also stand a more rigorous rule by not letting anything national. This made that a good Albanian elite to start their attempts to raise national consciousness outside of Albanian territories, such case was the publishing of the newspaper “Albania” from Faik Konica in Brussels. In this capital work from Konica, whole chapters are dedicated to spiritual culture of Albanians, of material culture and the way of living. Konica talked about “Besa”, the hospitality, the bravery feud of the Albanians, few traditional crafts, the way of eating, traditional clothes and very other everyday issue of Albanians which he considered national treasure. The purpose of this research was to highlight Konicas’s attempts as a connoisseur to the core of Albanian character by analyzing every virtue of them by believing that the nationality should be protected not only in the battlefields, but also by defending and appreciating more and more the deep meaning of the national traditions because their preservation is part of saving the national identity.

PARENTING STYLES AND ACADEMIC ACHIEVEMENT OF HIGH SCHOOL STUDENTS

PARENTING STYLES AND ACADEMIC ACHIEVEMENT OF HIGH SCHOOL STUDENTS

Author(s): Delvina BEKA,Qufli Osmani / Language(s): English Issue: 22-23/2024

This research aimed to analyze the relationship between parenting styles and academic achievement in high school students, at the same time determining the predictive value of parenting styles and sociodemographic variables in academic achievement. In this research 159 participants took part; 88(55.3%) of them were women, and 71(44.7%) of them were men, between the ages of 15 and 18. The Mensa questionnaire was used as a measuring instrument for parenting styles, while academic achievement was measured with the average grade. Through the SPSS statistical package, the data were analyzed, and through Pearson's correlation, it was proven that the democratic style has a significant negative correlation with academic achievements (r = -.182*; p = 0.021), and the authoritarian style has a significant negative correlation (r = -.265**; p = 0.001), while the neglectful and cooperative styles did not show a significant correlation in terms of academic achievement. Predictors: parenting styles and socio-demographic characteristics, turn out to explain the important criterion variable of academic achievements. The results obtained show that 22% of the variation in academic achievement is explained by the group of predictors together (R2 = 0.220; p <.000). A special focus on parenting styles and their promotion would be necessary for interventions aimed at improving academic performance.

DETECTION OF RISK FACTORS AND PREVENTION OF VIOLENT BEHAVIOR IN THE EDUCATION SYSTEM

DETECTION OF RISK FACTORS AND PREVENTION OF VIOLENT BEHAVIOR IN THE EDUCATION SYSTEM

Author(s): Snezana Đorđević / Language(s): English Issue: 2/2024

Schools should be defined as social institutions that deal with education and the upbringing of children, places where these goals are achieved in a safe and secure environment. However, in the past ten years, schools have become stages for displaying different forms of violence, which have become increasingly common, and more serious in terms of analyzing the consequences. The purpose of this study is to indicate the risk factors which are the foundation of violent means of behavior of an adolescent, and which could be recognized before the externalization of violent behavior patterns in schoolenvironments. This study analyses the significance of individual personality characteristics, family dynamics and social interactions during the period of the formation of a personality while maturing, by comparing the results of the studies we have had so far, in order to find a method to determine the risk factors which are more probable to, relatively early in life of a person, indicate the greater probability for manifesting different forms of antisocial behavior in the social environment. This study signalizes the significance of educating family members and raising the level of professional awareness of school workers, as well as of those employed in other structures of social community for the sake of recognizing early signs that school children may be liable to committing violent acts, with the aim of making preventive intervention multisectoral, timely and effective.

(Amoralny) familizm: propozycja rekonceptualizacji z wykorzystaniem psychologii ewolucyjnej i międzykulturowej

(Amoralny) familizm: propozycja rekonceptualizacji z wykorzystaniem psychologii ewolucyjnej i międzykulturowej

Author(s): Barbara Pasamonik / Language(s): Polish Issue: 3/2024

In his 1958 book Moral Basis of a Backward Society, Edward Banfield introduced the term amoral familism to describe social relations and values in a poor rural community in southern Italy. In my analysis, I propose to abandon the value-laden epithet "amoral" and consider familism as an evolutionary adaptive strategy activated in times of scarcity or crises. I base the thesis of the evolutionary roots of familism on the inclusive fitness theory (Hamilton 1964) and the theory of kin and reciprocal altruism (Trivers 1971). The perspective of evolutionary psychology makes it possible to see the positive functions of familism and to propose a new biological-cultural understanding of familism. Familism has so far been diagnosed primarily "indirectly" in sociological studies of bonding (and bridging) capital and in research on social trust conducted as part of cyclical social surveys such as the World Values Survey and the European Social Survey. In the search for accurate measures of biological-cultural familism we can additionally turn to the research of cross-cultural psychologists conducted for international management. I argue that the dimension of particularism on the 7-dimensional cultural map of Fons Trompenaars and Charles Hampden-Turner (2002) and the dimension of in-group collectivism on the 9-dimensional cultural map of the GLOBE project (House et al. 2004), can valuably complement the measures used in sociological sciences and make the diagnosis of familism more reliable. Finally, I call for in-depth research on Polish familism aimed at testing whether it is possible to build bridging capital on the basis of familist bonding capital.

Uwarunkowania międzypokoleniowej socjalizacji religijnej w rodzinach według Verna Bengtsona (1941-2019)

Uwarunkowania międzypokoleniowej socjalizacji religijnej w rodzinach według Verna Bengtsona (1941-2019)

Author(s): Jerzy Kochanowicz / Language(s): Polish Issue: 67/2024

Author(s): Anna Kanios,Anna Weissbrot-Koziarska / Language(s): English Issue: 2/2024

The article discusses the recognition of social competencies of students of science and social majors to do voluntary work. The theoretical concept on which the research is based is the concept of social competencies by J. Skrzypczak, who sees them as “the ability to do something, depending on the familiarity of knowledge, skills and abilities included in it, as well as on the degree of conviction about the need of using that ability.” The main purpose of the research is to diagnose the social competencies of students of science and social majors to do voluntary work and to identify the differences between groups in this respect. The method of diagnostic survey was chosen for the purposes of the study. Research has shown slight differences between the students of science and social majors. Kontrpamięć rodzinnej pamięci. Fałszerze pieprzu Moniki Sznajderman jako biograficzny dyskurs postpamięci i kontrpamięci

Author(s): Jan Miklas-Frankowski / Language(s): Polish Issue: 67/2024

THE REVIVAL OF SERBIAN NATIONALISM IN THE FORMER YUGOSLAVIA

THE REVIVAL OF SERBIAN NATIONALISM IN THE FORMER YUGOSLAVIA

Author(s): Isak SHERIFI / Language(s): English Issue: 22-23/2024

With the establishment of Yugoslavia as a state that consisted of several nations such as Croats, Slovenes, Bosnians, Albanians, Macedonians and Serbs, there will constantly be attempts to dominate other nations. For Serbia, the Yugoslav state will only be a tool for Serbian domination, which, in turn, stimulated Croatian national opposition. Nationalism will come to the fore mostly from the years 1844 with the infamous "Nacertania" program until the end of the Second World War. Serbian nationalism will also be emphasized during Tito's leadership, with the program of the Serbian Academy of Sciences and Arts in 1986 and its implementation by Slobodan Milosevic. The Serbs never stopped these forms of war even with the ethnic Albanians of Kosovo and the Albanians who lived in other territories in the former Yugoslavia, but they managed to adapt them, depending on the political currents in the world, and continued the ethnocide that can be taken as an example flagrant application of silent fascism that acted in the institutional framework, without any serious reaction from the outside.

Author(s): Sheruze Osmani,Ibrahim NEZIRI,Luljeta BEXHETI,Kalina SOTIROSKA / Language(s): English Issue: 22-23/2024

Problematic social media use turns out to have effects on many dimensions of teenagers' lives, including emotional well-being, social interactions, and interpersonal relationships. The focus of research is oriented directed towards identification, in addition to its effects, the predictive factors associated with problematic use of social media. The purpose of this study is to predict the effect of family support, school support and school well-being on the problematic social media use among adolescents in North Macedonia. The study included 5144 adolescents 11, 13 and 15 years old, of which 48.4% are boys and 51.6% are girls. Considering the structure of the population in the country, 66.6% are young Macedonians and 33.4% Albanians. The data presented are part of the cross-sectional study "Health and Behaviour of School-aged Children", collected during 2022.The results of the research showed that family support is a predictor of problematic social media use for Macedonian and Albanian girls and boys, whereas teacher support did not emerge as a determinant of problematic social media use. Prediction role of classmates’ support and school pressure are also discussed.

Corporate Sustainability Reporting and its Impact on Communication and Promotion of Sustainable Development

Author(s): Rumiana Jeleva / Language(s): English Issue: Special/2024

The focus of this paper is on the link between sociology of sustainability and non-financial corporate sustainability reporting (as defined by EU Directives). The aim is to analyse and show to what extent corporate sustainability reporting adds value to the communication and promotion of social change towards sustainable development. Тhe article is based on empirical data collected in the course of the author’s sociological research conducted in the period 22 April - 19 May 2023 on 51 companies in Bulgaria, using the semi-standardised online interview method. We firstly postulate a sociology of sustainability, defined as a middle-range theory in the sense of R. Merton (1957; 1968). Secondly, we describe corporate sustainability reporting as defined in the EU. We discuss the nature of sustainability reporting by companies, its strengths and weaknesses, and its relation to sociology. Thirdly, we show how a sociology of sustainability can be used effectively for the empirical study of corporate sustainability and outline a research agenda that includes specific research directions and research hypotheses on corporate sustanibility reporting. Fourthly, we point out how the regulatory hypothesis can be operationalised and ultimately examined - accepted or rejected in specific empirical studies. We conclude by pointing to the heuristic power of sociology of sustainability, its ability to work interdisciplinarily and have an inclusive effect in communicating and promoting sustainable societal development. Empirical evidence has comprehensively clarified the importance of the regulatory framework and the availability of resources with regard to how companies approach sustainability in their corporate reports. The hypothesis that enforcement and regulation are a possible tool for sensitising companies to sustainability development goals was confirmed. At the same time, it is shown that the currently existing variety of guidelines and standards tends to hinder corporate management; i.e., over-regulation of sustainability reporting is not a solution.

Why do Bulgarians Resist Vaccination Against COVID-19? Reflections on an Outlier

Author(s): Tihomir Mitev,Plamen Nanov / Language(s): English Issue: Special/2024

The COVID-19 pandemic revealed some of the divisions existing within the European Union. The rates of vaccination against SARS-CoV-2 clearly divide Western from Eastern European countries. The article presents “the curious case” of Bulgaria, which has the lowest vaccination uptake of all EU countries. Even though Bulgaria had been receiving vaccines since the beginning of 2021, by the end of November of that year, scarcely 25% of Bulgarians were fully vaccinated, a percentage far below that of the second lowest-ranking country in this respect, Romania. In seeking an explanation for the scepticism of the Bulgarian population towards vaccination, and analysing the roots of the problem, the authors use the Vaccine Hesitancy Matrix of Determinants, developed by the Strategic Advisory Group of Experts at the World Health Organisation. The research reconstructs and traces the public institutions’ efforts to govern the crisis and shows that, in 2021, a constellation of three groups of determinants intensified hesitant attitudes to anti-COVID-19 vaccination. The study is based on media and content analysis of documents, as well as on secondary data analysis, interpreted through the frame of the Vaccine Hesitancy Matrix of Determinants as a heuristic perspective for understanding a specific pattern of vaccination hesitancy. The analysis reveals that the main driving forces of growing hesitation and behaviour regarding vaccination are the populist use of experts and authorities’ positions and the low level of public understanding of science, technology and medicine.

The Intersection of Science and Religion: a Sociological Perspective

Author(s): Yuh-Yuh Li,Meng-Fen Yen,Mohammad Sibtain Kadri / Language(s): English Issue: Special/2024

This study aims to present recent academic discussions in sociology regarding the intersection of science and religion. It reviews recent empirical research literature on this topic, specifically defining three types of relationships between science and religion. Additionally, using cross-national survey data, it analyses the patterns of intersection between science and religion in modern society and examines how these coexistence patterns may be influenced by region, urban-rural residence, gender, and educational level. Finally, the study discusses the implications of social differences in the intersection of science and religion and offers potential directions for future research.
