Öz-duyarlık ile psikolojik belirtiler arasındaki ilişkide ruminatif düşünce biçiminin aracı rolü

Author(s): Elif Özcan,Ahmet Sapancı / Language(s): Turkish,English Issue: 2/2023

The aim of this study was to examine the mediating role of ruminative thinking in the relationship between self-compassion and psychological symptoms. The research was conduct-ed with the predictive correlational method. The participants of the study consisted of a total of 471 people, 353 women (74.9%) and 118 men (25.1%), who were determined by the convenience sampling method. Participants were aged between 18 and 65 (M = 29, SD = 10). Self-Compassion Scale, Ruminative Thought Style Scale, Brief Symptom Inventory, and Sociodemographic Information Form were used as data collection tools in the study. Pearson Correlation Analysis was used to analyze the data, and regression analysis based on the bootstrap method was used to test the mediation effect. As a result of the research, it was determined that ruminative thinking style plays a mediating role in the relationship between self-compassion and psychological symptoms. The results of the study were discussed with-in the framework of the relevant literature, and suggestions were presented for both future research and mental health professionals. It is thought that the findings obtained will con-tribute to a better understanding of the structure of self-compassion and ruminative thinking when working with psychological symptoms in clinical practice.

Although it is known that vaccination is very crucial for controlling the spread of COVID-19, intentions of individuals to be vaccinated may vary considerably. Therefore, in this study, the aim was to examine the factors related with individuals’ intentions of COVID-19 vaccine. To assess the individuals’ intentions of COVID-19 vaccine, 525 individuals be-tween 18-64 ages who had not yet received the COVID-19 vaccine participated in this study. The study was conducted using an online questionnaire method, consisting of measures of sociodemographic characteristics, variables related to exposure to COVID-19, risk group status for COVID-19, perceived knowledge on vaccines, health anxiety, and self-efficacy levels. Data were analyzed through hierarchical regression analysis. Sociodemographic variables, being in the risk group for COVID-19, and individuals' own or a close one’s previous diagnosis of COVID-19 were not associated with their intention to be vaccinated against COVID-19. On the other hand, results showed that individuals' intentions of COVID-19 vac-cine were significantly related with increased perceived knowledge about COVID-19 vaccines, having experienced financial loss in the COVID-19 outbreak, and having high levels of health anxiety. Findings of the study may help to design vaccination campaigns in the society.

Klinik Görüşme Kaygısı Durum Listesi: Görüşmede kaygı uyandıran durumlara özgü bir ölçüm aracına dair pilot çalışma

Author(s): Gamze Gültekin,Orçun Yorulmaz / Language(s): Turkish Issue: 2/2023

The aim of this current study was to perform a pilot study on features of an instrument on anxious situations on clinical interview. Following a literature search, we designed the List of Anxious Situations in Clinical Interview (LASI), which is a 21-item self-report measure with a feeling thermometer rating scale. Totally 335 psychology undergraduates participated in the study by completing LASI, Counselor Activity Self-Efficacy Scales (CASES) as well as demographic information form. The result of exploratory factor analysis showed that the LASI consists of two subscales, namely general and first interview situations, and these factors had satisfactory reliability values. Moreover, the correlational and group comparison analyses also indicated that the LASI in total and subscales had concurrent and criterion validity. Considering the limited availability of measures specifically focused on anxiety in clinical interviews in the literature, the LASI appears to be a promising instrument for examining anxious situations in clinical interviews. It can be utilized for various purposes, including scientific research on students' anxiety during clinical interviews, as well as relevant psychological assessments, administrations, and interventions.

Epistemic Injustice as a Form of Misrecognition: Exploration of Student Experiences in Bulgarian Higher Education Institutions

Author(s): Asen V. Dimitrov / Language(s): English Issue: 1/2024

This article aims to contribute to the ongoing scholarly discussion on the importance and practical applicability of social justice perspectives when studying the effects or outcomes of modern higher education. It analyses context-specific experiences and perceptions of higher education students through Axel Honneth’s more general notion of misrecognition and Miranda Fricker’s concept of epistemic injustice. Data comes from semi-structured interviews with a cohort of full-time first-year students in medicine and pedagogy at three Bulgarian higher education institutions and complementary academic staff accounts of student experiences. The analysis reveals patterns of academic structure and practice as linked to misrecognition or dysfunctional relations of recognition as well as to instances of systemic testimonial and hermeneutical disrespect or injustice. Selected experiences are discussed from the critical perspective of both theories in order to identify and characterise potential deficiencies, interventions needed in the higher education institutions’ organisational and institutional environment, or the conditions they provide for student self-formation.

We Write in Other People’s Blood: Troubling the Body Politics and Disability Representation of Yakuza O

Author(s): Adeline Loh / Language(s): English Issue: 1/2024

This paper takes Yakuza 0, a retrospective prequel and standalone entry to the Yakuza digital game franchise from Japan, as a case study for disabled feminine bodies vis-à-vis their male counterparts in game narratives. Of note is Makimura Makoto, a downtrodden Chinese-Japanese woman experiencing post-traumatic psychogenic blindness, who serves as the unwitting kingpin of the yakuza’s schemes. This paper posits that a reading of the game’s narrative (as supplemented by its gameplay mechanics) through the critical lens of disability studies offers a more affective and recuperative understanding of the game’s treatment of its marginalised characters. This paper first seeks to intervene in the game’s embodied and gendered power dynamics by attending to the body politics of its fictitious criminal underworld. Correspondingly, this paper troubles the game’s presentation of disability as a gendered performance, wherein feminine bodies disproportionately experience the material consequences and trauma of their disabilities, framed as pivotal narrative movements that spur the game’s male protagonists forward. Ultimately, this paper works towards a more empathetic reading of Yakuza 0 as a roadmap for how the franchise and digital games at large can address disability as a compounding, ever-evolving relational condition in addition to its physical and/ormental dimensions.

Children’s drawings provide valuable insights into their mind, their development. The study aimed to compare children’s drawings revealing age and sex differences. A total of 204 children aged 5-8 years participated, drawing pictures based on a content-neutral instruction (Draw what’s in your mind.). Theme and frequency analysis were conducted. Results showed that preschoolers drew significantly fewer objects (modus = 1) compared to first graders (modus = 11). Preschoolers most often drew vehicles, persons, and symbols, while first graders’ drawings vary much within themes and objects. Girls in both age groups depicted more nature-related objects, while boys focused on human-made products. These findings suggest a developmental shift, with preschoolers often drawing what they see or can draw and first graders expressing complex inner contents and experiences. Comparing drawings of preschool children and first graders can enhance our understanding of developmental processes during this period.

Downhill skiing evokes many emotions. In more experienced skiers, they manifest themselves primarily in a positive form, in beginners often in a negative form, in the form of apprehension or fear, mainly due to an unfamiliar way of moving - sliding and moving on skis. In the school environment, we encounter these phenomena quite often on ski training courses. The aim of the paper was to find out through a survey among teachers of lower secondary education (n=105), the fear and apprehension of pupils during ski courses, as well as the use of playful activities during their teaching. We analysed the results from the aspect of intersex differences using the chi-square test on the significance level of p<0.05, resp. p<0.01. We carried out the survey itself from January to March 2023. The results of our study showed that after the completion of ski course, the fear and anxiety of primary school pupils showed a clear trend of decrease. The use of games as one of the forms of warming up, practicing and perfecting selected elements of methodological series of skiing, but also at the end of daily job, is significantly (p<0.01) used to a greater extent by women. During the entire duration of the course, teachers make the most use of movement games of traditional nature - chases, relays, etc. therefore, we recommend that when teaching downhill skiing, movement games with the use of non-traditional aids (skis, poles, etc.) are included to a greater extent, but also games that require the cooperation of pupils, the so-called cooperative games. The results of our study also pointed to the fact that, according to teachers, students' fear of skiing is dominantly caused by an unfamiliar way of moving, when students lose their balance, which they cannot control (p<0.01).

The Seeds of Corruption. How Religions go through the Laws of Adaptation

The Seeds of Corruption. How Religions go through the Laws of Adaptation

Author(s): Cosmin Tudor Ciocan / Language(s): English Issue: 2/2024

This article explores the concept of 'adaptive symbiosis' between religion and culture, challenging the notion of religions as static or immutable entities by showcasing their dynamic engagement with and adaptation to local cultural contexts. The notion of ‘adaptive symbiosis’ transcends mere coexistence or amalgamation, embodying a deep, complex process of mutual adaptation. Within this evolutionary dance, both religion and culture emerge not merely as participants but as co-creators of a new reality. Through the examination of various religious traditions—such as Christianity, Islam, Buddhism, and others—it illustrates how religions evolve in symbiotic relationships with host cultures, leading to the creation of hybrid cultural-religious identities. Highlighting the mechanisms of biological adaptation—mutualism, amensalism, commensalism, and parasitism—as metaphors, the article delves into the complex interplay between religious teachings and cultural integration. It argues against viewing religions as immutable, instead presenting them as evolving entities that contribute to the richness and diversity of human civilization, especially in the context of globalization. This dynamic, evolving space of adaptive negotiations underlines the importance of understanding the fluid nature of cultural and religious boundaries in contributing to novel forms of expression and identity. Through this exploration, we aim to shed light on the enduring and evolving relationship between religion and culture, highlighting how this dynamic interplay contributes to the richness and diversity of human civilization.
