The Postnormal Condition and the Politics of Migration in Biyi Bandele’s Half of a Yellow Sun

The Postnormal Condition and the Politics of Migration in Biyi Bandele’s Half of a Yellow Sun

Author(s): Stephen Ogheneruro Okpadah / Language(s): English Issue: 1/2019

Civil wars, political chaos, ecological revolutions, separatist agitations, ethnic conflicts and religious clashes form part of the larger body of what, following Ziauddin Sardar, we will define as “postnormal times.” The representation of borders in migration is a salient feature of African films and films on Africa, such as Hotel Rwanda, Blood Diamond, Half of a Yellow Sun, Tears of the Sun and Somewhere in Africa: The Cries of Humanity. These cinematic productions are rooted in the culture of migration, displacement, liberation and survival. The present article considers postcolonial African cinema and argues that filming migration, especially forced migration, is intricately related to the postnormal condition characteristic of African societies. Postnormality in that part of the world is largely produced by armed conflicts whose aftermath stages spectacular waves of human migration. The Boko Haram conflict, the Herdsmen crisis and the Niger Delta crisis of resource control in Nigeria and the Al Shabab terrorist group in Somalia and Eastern Africa are some of the instances ofviolent self-location that have necessitated discussions of refugeeism, migration and postnormality in Nigerian and African film studies. This article focuses on Biyi Bandele’s film Half of a Yellow Sun which is read in contextual juxtaposition with other films about crisis and migration. Sardar’s theory of postnormality is used in the analytical discussion of the film, which demonstrates that African cinema succeeds in representing the complexities, contradictions and chaos of voluntary and involuntary migration and provides an adequate response to the anti-oppressive reforms on that continent.

Food and the Imaginary Other

Food and the Imaginary Other

Author(s): Irina Perianova / Language(s): English Issue: 1/2019

The article considers a number of food-related topics and uses examples from a wide variety of sources, ranging from literary texts through journalistic articles to posts on the internet. Special attention is paid to“real” and imaginary food travels, which have become a fascinating topic of research in our time. Food controversies are also touched upon. It is argued that foreign foods may have mostly been a source of disgust in the past but have subsequently acquired symbolic capital and consuming them has come to be interpreted as a sign of sophistication. Also, food can be said to represent, in many ways, a new discursive currency, which may signal a desired or unwanted identity. In a lot of cases, however, the “original” of a particular food item may not exist and what is provided for consumption is a simulacrum. Cases of nostalgia for the food of the past are approached from this angle. Overall, the article aims at presenting the diverse cultural landscape of the present of which the food of the Other is an integral part.

Varia: Морално несъгласие онлайн. Противоречието или премахването на съдържание в случаи на онлайн омраза е по-ефективно? Систематично литературно ревю

Author(s): Bogomil Kalinov / Language(s): Bulgarian Issue: 1/2019

The terms and conditions for using social platforms and the Internet grow more complex as governments struggle to provide instruments that avoid employing censorship techniques to revoke free speech, but at the same time provide online users with a safe environment and shelter from experiencing abuse or aggressive behavior. This ethical dilemma has apparently split Europe into two contradicting schools of thought. In July 2017 a search to identify relevant publications on the topic of online moral disagreement was conducted on the “Communication and Mass Media Complete” electronic database. The objective of the search was to find articles related to the topic, published in English between 2015 and 2018 with access to the full text. This systematic literature review is the final product of the materials found.

Емоционалният брандинг в лабиринта на постистината

Емоционалният брандинг в лабиринта на постистината

Author(s): Stefan Serezliev / Language(s): Bulgarian Issue: 1/2018

Post-truth and emotional branding are constantly criticized, the main argument being the creation of emotional pressure in the decision-making process. This is also cited as a prerequisite for fake news, rumours, political lies etc. Can we get out of this frame and look for new intersections of post-truth and emotional branding? Perhaps this would be a way of humanizing post-truth for the benefit of society and reducing brand populism.

Фалшиви новини в корпоративните комуникации

Фалшиви новини в корпоративните комуникации

Author(s): Hristina Hristova / Language(s): Bulgarian Issue: 1/2018

The paper examines the impact of fake news on the relationship between companies and their strategic audiences. The text is structured into two parts. The focus in the first part is on the structure of corporate communications and the model of successful corporate policy presented as a projection of the idea of the business of trust. The second part highlights the main aspects of the development of the cosmetic giant „L’Oreal”, which has preserved its image as a strong brand and an ethical company in the conditions of hypercompetitiveness and fake news. The study is based on Van Rieland Fombrun’s theory of corporate communications as a polyfunctional concept and on Kotler’s idea of market-oriented strategic planning, providing an advantage to firms in situations of risk and dynamic social transformations.

Фалшиви новини и икономическа журналистика

Author(s): Asya Asenova / Language(s): Bulgarian Issue: 1/2018

The nonobjective journalistic interpretation of economic facts can lead to both minor and serious consequences, ranging from the individual recipient to a whole business sector. Therefore, the fundamental principle of providing reliable information to society is of particular importance for the economic field. The paper addresses the issue of unintentional distribution of fake news in the context of economic journalism and new media. The combination of political, social, economic and technological factors has contributed to the growth and scale of the problem, with the most important one being the impact of the internet environment, which has turned fake news into an unwanted function or rather a dysfunction of digital media.

Борба с фалшивите новини с инструментариума на закона и на саморегулацията – българският случай

Борба с фалшивите новини с инструментариума на закона и на саморегулацията – българският случай

Author(s): Ivo Indzhov / Language(s): Bulgarian Issue: 1/2018

The paper discusses the possibilities of countering fake news in Bulgarian media with the instruments of media law, regulation, self-regulation and co-regulation. The study has reached the following important conclusions: 1. The laws are inadequate to the new challenge. There are temptations to fight it through the Criminal Code or a special law that can turn the prosecution service into a repressive media supervisor. 2. The State can contribute to curbing disinformation in the media by highlighting their ownership and funding. 3. The ethical codes oblige journalists to be responsible to society, but self-regulation is de-legitimized by the division in the guild. The solution lies in the development of co-regulation: the state stimulates the media by setting a condition for advertising in them: that they should agree on one code and that their ethics committee should be able to penalize them financially for fake news.

Апозитивните словосъчетания като средство за създаване на фалшиви новини

Author(s): Anton Getsov / Language(s): Bulgarian Issue: 1/2018

The paper analyses the manipulative potential of one insufficiently-explored sentence part in Bulgarian syntax – the appositive, and also the appositive phrases, which are composed of a complement (object or subject complement) and the noun it describes. The paper also stresses the appositive word groups (constructions) that follow the ‘common noun+common noun’ model. The fact that word order in this type of appositive word groups has a role in changing the intention of communication and in creating – deliberately or not – fake news in media discourse is well supported and richly illustrated.

Кризисният PR в епохата на постистина

Кризисният PR в епохата на постистина

Author(s): Mariya Nikolova / Language(s): Bulgarian Issue: 1/2018

The paper outlines some of the challenges that PR experts are facing in their work in the so-called „Fake News Era”, dominated by misinformation and the need for verifying the facts published in social and traditional media. The main thesis of Gьnter Bentele’s theory of public trust is used to frame the basic idea about the lack of trust in the media in general. Some of his conclusions drawn in the 1990s, are similar to the results summarized today by two reports: Cision’s „State of the Media Report” (2017) and Edelman’s „Trust Barometer” (2017). The paper also presents a few case studies, related to the distribution of fake news that damage the prestige and the reputation of the affected companies (Pepsi Co, New Balance, Ferrero Croup). It poses the question about the extent to which we can talk about corporate communication management and strategies in the post-truth era and whether it would be more appropriate to include a Rumor Management strategy in the corporate communication strategy arsenal when a corporation needs to react to a piece of fake news in the post-truth era.

Теория за постистината. Идентификация и ограничаване на фалшивите новини

Author(s): Maya Vassileva / Language(s): Bulgarian Issue: 1/2018

The paper presents the theoretical and research aspects of media interrelations among the phenomena of post-truth, fake news, populist statements, and the use of alternative facts in political communication. It conducts a comparative analysis of these concepts and analyzes illustrative examples from the media environment in which the terms operate in the same information discourse. The main focus is on two key academic empirical studies whose theoretical and empirical scholarly approaches point to the main thesis of this paper – that post-truth and fake news create an emotional context of information perception and that this is the basis on which consumers and voters shape their behavior, reactions, understandings and views.

Author(s): Valentina Bondzholova / Language(s): Bulgarian Issue: 1/2017

The review deals with the linguistic features of print media advertising used in the presidential election campaign in 2016 as well as with the political slogans in it. Pre-election advertising is an important manifestation of political advertising, which serves the purpose of presenting the candidates and motivating the electorate. In connection with its characteristics attention is paid to the choice of linguistic means, most of all vocabulary, but also registered language game skills. Different adverts analyze the use of precedent texts, language game and style tinting, which, in parallel with the other emotional-expressive means, boost the effectiveness of the text.

Изграждане на политически имидж чрез предизборни новини и послания (Президентските избори 2016 г.)

Author(s): Sonya Ivanova-Ignatova / Language(s): Bulgarian Issue: 1/2017

The political campaign for the presidential and vice presidential election in the Republic of Bulgaria in October – November 2016 gives rise to research interest and is topical. The campaign discusses the messages of the candidates during their coverage in online media and social networks. Focus is placed on their disclosures in the media, as well as the specific political rhetoric on the part of the candidates regarding their opponents in the campaign. Based on a content analysis and using the descriptive approach, articles in the media and social networking publications are analyzed for the purpose of the specific study. The analysis aims to trace whether the specific disclosures for candidates remain as separate publications in a media or turn into political scandals that are effective enough to discredit a presidential and vice presidential candidate. It also aims to address the question of how much media attention is given to individual politicians, their characteristics and qualities, extracts from their biographies, or it focuses public attention on their political and management achievements. Do individual politicians have a key role and do they shun the parties, institutions and organizations from the focus of the media? The paper examines media messages before the Presidential election in our country in 2016, with a focus on the journalistic style in the news and the role of media in building a political image. The subject of the study is the media messages and posts in Bulgaria before and during the election campaign of the presidential election in 2016. The subject of this paper is the process of building an image of political figures through media messages during the survey ed period. The following methods will be used: empirical observation and theoretical analysis.

Author(s): Fani Mazdrashka-Mihova / Language(s): Bulgarian Issue: 1/2017

The paper focuses on some peculiarities of media coverage of election campaigns in regional media. The main thesis is that there is less journalism in the media coverage of the election, with its rejection being voluntary and conscious, and the reasons for this are not exhausted with the popular ones about political dependencies. Consideration is also given to ways in which the media complies to or circumvents some legal requirements for tagging paid content.

Varia: The Role of “Letters to the Editor” in Shaping Mass Media Representations of Brexit

Author(s): Martin Dangerfield / Language(s): English Issue: 1/2018

Brexit has commanded an enormous amount of attention in the UK media, both before and since the In-Out referendum on 23 June 2016. Though various studies have already considered the overall role of newspapers in affecting attitudes towards the EU in the UK, this article focuses on an area in which there has so far been no research: the role of “Letters to the Editor” in newspaper contributions to the Brexit debate and their parts in equipping voters to make an informed choice. It looks at six UK national newspapers, all with varied stances on the EU and with different tones and styles of getting messages across to readers. All letters published in each paper during the month leading up to the referendum will be scrutinized with a view to throwing some light on the following initial questions. To what extent did readers’ letters tend to support and reinforce each newspaper’s stance on “Leave” or “Remain”? To what extent did readers’ letters contribute to a real debate in each newspaper, i.e., disputing the content of articles or editorials published by the newspapers or disputing other readers’ letters? How, if at all, did the role of readers’ letters vary between the six newspapers? Finally, were there any differences of note in the style and format of the different newspapers’ letters pages?

Friendship, cooperation and cultural exchanges have been established between Bulgaria and China 70 years ago. In the dynamic 21st century they stabilize and develop and their priority is education. In 2022 the High school for extended study in humanities „Damyan Damyanov“ in the town of Sliven will celebrate 25 years since its establishment – it is a school with its own spirit and with interests and searches in the field of humanitarian education. It is our aim to find a way for modern technologies to work in favor of humanitarianism. The beginning of the cooperation between our chool and the Confucius Institute at Veliko Tarnovo university ”St. Cyril and Methodius” was in 2016 with the first volunteer – Zhao Panyu. Her followers were Tun Yachi, Chai Jouyan, Shi Sanzhuang and Yunhan Li. Each of the girls, who resided in our city, left her bright mark in our school community. In the conditions of distance learning, Yunhan Li found a wonderful way to reach her students. Using social media, she had every class as a video event in Chinese language and culture lessons. Yunhan Li translated into Chinese some of the best poems of Damyan Damyanov. The e-book she created is bilingual – the poems are published so that both the Bulgarian and Chinese version can be seen. Moreover, readers also have the opportunity to hear how the words of the beloved poet sound in Chinese, performed by Yunhan Li. We are convinced that the e-book Leah created contributes not only to promote Bulgarian poetry in the Republic of China but also to increase the interest in our country in Chinese language and culture. We are honored that in this way we can participate in the cultural exchanges between our countries. The article examines the role of the 𝐺𝑟𝑎𝑧ℎ𝑑𝑎𝑛𝑖𝑛 (Citizen) magazine in the protection of civil liberties in the first decade of the 20th century. It has been singled out as the first independent scientific and educational conceptual project, ambitious to form the modern citizen. The magazine is dedicated to the mission of educating and enlightening civil society through a printed edition in the field of the fundamental knowledge for any democracy – constitutional rights, freedoms, and obligations. For this purpose, articles published in the democratic press and in the specialized press with legal themes from the first decade of the century have been studied, which outline the context in which the programmatic texts by Stefan Kirov, published in 𝐺𝑟𝑎𝑧ℎ𝑑𝑎𝑛𝑖𝑛, are examined. In this article, for the first time, pages from Stefan Kirov’s unpublished memoirs related to the publication of 𝐺𝑟𝑎𝑧ℎ𝑑𝑎𝑛𝑖𝑛 are published.
