The empowerment of women students from deprived backgrounds through education for social transformation – A study of Tangaza University College, Nairobi, East Africa

The empowerment of women students from deprived backgrounds through education for social transformation – A study of Tangaza University College, Nairobi, East Africa

Author(s): Vicenta Javier,Giuseppe Caramazza,Lucy Raphael Kimaro / Language(s): English,Danish Issue: 1/2022

The research focused on the empowerment of female students for social transformation at Tangaza University College, whose core values consist of Catholic social teachings. The college provides higher education to young people who would otherwise not have the opportunity for higher studies. Of the 2,000+ college students, 1,500 receive partial or full scholarships. The aim of the study was to find out how Tangaza fulfils its mission of educating for social transformation, from the responses of female students from low to very low income families. These are in two groups: female students mostly from squatter areas in the city of Nairobi, and the women religious, who primarily come from villages where primary and secondary education is sadly inadequate. The study makes use of a synthesis of theories of empowerment compiled by a social scientist, Mann Hyung Hur. The results showed how Tangaza’s education for social transformation has empowered its female students in the three areas of personal growth, job competence and social responsibility. However, there are differing degrees of empowerment among the three categories. An analysis is done of the differences between the three areas of empowerment, and recommendations are made. The sample population consists of women graduates of Tangaza University College from the academic years 2010-2017.

Язык государствообразующего народа. Об одной поправке к российской конституции в контексте мифологической функции законодательного текста

Язык государствообразующего народа. Об одной поправке к российской конституции в контексте мифологической функции законодательного текста

Author(s): Jakub Sadowski / Language(s): Russian Issue: 2/2021

In the conditions of a rule-of-law state, the Constitution is the main reference point of its legal system, while in the realities of modern society living in a state governed by the rule of law, it may also have significant symbolic functions. The new wording of Article 68 of the Russian Constitution, proposed in the law of 2020 on the amendment to the Constitution, defines the state language – Russian – as "the language of the state-forming nation belonging to the multinational union of equal nations of the Russian Federation". In this article, this term is analyzed as evidence of the strategy to impose mythological functions on the legislative text. In case of the concept of "Russian language", this strategy manifested itself already in 2005 in the federal law on the State language, which established the status of the Russian language as a tool to "strengthen inter-ethnic relations in a unified multi-ethnic State". The law on the amendment of the Russian Constitution goes beyond the very introduction of mythological components into the legal text and presents a strategy to legitimize mythology through an act of general vote.

Unity of Russian Society. Importance of Building Social Cohesion for the Security of Russian Federation

Unity of Russian Society. Importance of Building Social Cohesion for the Security of Russian Federation

Author(s): Mirosław Malinka / Language(s): English Issue: 2/2021

A sense of unity in any society is a great value. United society is a strong support for rulers and their policies. Public support often legitimizes the actions of rulers. Social unity is built on the basis of shared values and beliefs. The assumed goal of the research is focused on analyzing these categories in the context of their importance for building social unity. Such a goal has led to a question: What is the importance of these categories in building social cohesion for Russians? To solve the indicated problems, theoretical methods were used. Russians are convinced of the uniqueness of their society. This sense of uniqueness affects the sphere of security. It gives rise to their unwillingness to take part in formal alliances and international organizations, if Russia is not in a dominant position. Such views are deeply rooted in the consciousness of Russian society. Simultaneously, Russia airs grievances against the West, claiming that it does not notice its uniqueness.

The Russian vision of strategic balance in the 21st century in the spirit of political realism

Author(s): Malina Kaszuba / Language(s): English Issue: 2/2021

Over the past two decades, Russian foreign policy has evolved significantly. Its aim is to seek a change in the global balance of power. This evolution proceeded from attempts to establish cooperation with the West, through a confrontational narrative, ending with political and military actions. The purpose of this article is to analyze the present Russian view of the current international order and to define its future shape based on assumptions and specific actions in the sphere of the aforementioned foreign policy. Particularly useful for the needs of the conducted research is the reference to the theory of political realism. This is determined by the fact that the Russian Federation, contesting the current hegemonic international order, aims to create a multipolar world with the key balancing role of the great powers.

Armeńscy Jezydzi. Proces akulturacji a specyfika diaspory

Author(s): Grzegorz Pełczyński,Adam Pomieciński / Language(s): Polish Issue: 2/2021

Yezidis is a religious group of Yezidi faith, sometimes identifying with Kurds or considering themselves a separate ethnic group. Parts of the Yezidi diaspora are scattered mainly in the countries of the Middle East. In Armenia, they are the largest minority in this country, with a population of around 30,000. The article presents the process of Yezidi acculturation in Armenia. The concept of acculturation of D. Sam and J. Berry, which takes into account the degree to which people want to preserve their identity and culture, and the degree to which they want to be in contact with people outside their own group and participate in everyday life within the framework of wider society, turned out to be helpful here. In the case of the Armenian Yezidis, the acculturation process is quite diverse, as it extends between integrating with the Armenian society and remaining on the margins of it.

Polska w Układzie Warszawskim – realizacja zobowiązań

Author(s): Jerzy Kajetanowicz / Language(s): Polish Issue: 2/2021

The Warsaw Pact created in 1955 for almost 40 years played an important role in maintaining international security. Poland, due to its military and economic potential, was the second largest member of this alliance. For this reason, it sought to ensure a real impact on its functioning, which was reflected in its active participation in the implementation of the provisions of the agreement on the political, military and economic levels. Poland's political activity was expressed in numerous initiatives to ensure peace and in active participation in international cooperation. Military commitments were implemented through the preparation of modern operational troops, from which a strategic and operational union was created in the form of a Maritime Front, ready to act as part of the United Armed Forces of the Warsaw Pact throughout the period of membership in this alliance. In turn, economic cooperation was manifested in close cooperation in the production of various weapon systems and military equipment, as well as the development of defense infrastructure for both own needs and allies.

Flood Research in Bangladesh and Future Direction: an insight from last three decades

Author(s): Md. Nazmul Hossen,Shahpara Nawaz,Md. Humayain Kabir / Language(s): English Issue: 1/2022

Flooding is a critical concern that causes substantial economic damages and social issues for different regions of Bangladesh every year. Approximately one-third of the country's total area is highly vulnerable to floods, and people's sufferings from the flooding are beyond description. Despite the magnitude and extent of floods, a comprehensive study on flood research in Bangladesh is inadequate. Therefore, this study analyses research articles published on floods, and their implications in Bangladesh over the last three decades. We used a systematic literature review to precisely understand the trend and pattern of published flood research in Bangladesh by summarizing, categorizing, and visualizing the existing research articles. This review revealed that research on integrated flood adaptation and management, effective flood modelling, and reliable forecasting is considerably less emphasized than studying the causes and impacts of the flood. In order to detect changes in flood causes and impacts over time and establish links between physical exposure, risk experience, and socio-demographic data in research to develop integrated flood management mechanisms, it is possible to operationalize systematic study in a specific location for an extended period. We also found that a considerable increase in interest in doing flood research following the year 2000, as the country experienced an increase in the frequency and severity of floods across the country. Based on the findings of this study, we suggested an agenda for future flood research in Bangladesh.

Methodology for the risk monitoring of geological hazards for buildings and structures

Author(s): Kachanov Sergey,Nigmetov Gennadiy / Language(s): English Issue: 1/2022

In this article, technology for monitoring geological hazards is proposed to reduce the risk of the collapse of buildings and structures. The example considered in the article shows that the reduction of the landslide hazard of the soil massif on the slope can be achieved by: equipping drainage and storm systems that ensure the effective removal of groundwater; monitoring the state of the soil massif for the timely determination of dynamic and geophysical parameters and the exclusion of the occurrence of resonant phenomena from dynamic impacts; complex monitoring of the "soil-construction" system. Thus, the proposed technology of integrated soil-structure monitoring can provide timely warning of the geological hazard risk and thereby reduce the likelihood of destruction of buildings and structures by taking appropriate measures.

INTEGRATING UTOPIA AND DYSTOPIA INTO FOOD STUDIES. SOME KEY ELEMENTS FOR A FUTURE NARRATIVE ANALYSIS

Author(s): Valentina Marinescu / Language(s): English Issue: 28/2021

Over time, imaginative narratives have allowed people to either escape real life (through fantasy or daydreaming) or make predictions about the future of reality, providing inspiration for the progress of mankind. An important starting point for studying the link between food and future is the typology proposed by Belasco: the “classic future” (which imagines a utopian future, inspired by the “cornucopia”), the “modern future” (which promotes processed foods stored in easy-to-store containers, based on the concept of “scientific feeding”, which aimed to maximize food production and waste reduction, by strengthening and simplifying the means of production), and the “future of recombination” (which emphasized the combination of elements of the past with certain elements of the present, in order to obtain a product that will be used in the future, assuming that food is prepared on the basis of 'a process of consolidation and segmentation of foods, which means that agriculture will also be transformed, by putting in place “experimental cropping systems” and “controlled agriculture”). The aim of this article is to present the possible alternative ways to draw a "map" of the stories about the future of food as they result from utopian writings, science fiction and fantasy novels.
