GLOCALIZATION – A NEW SYNTHESIS OF CONTRARIES? THE CULTURAL IDENTITIES PERCEIVED AS COMPOSITION EFFECT

Social and human sciences face today, as yesterday, the challenge to explain the unity and diversity of cultures. This complex relationship between unity and diversity has been encoded over time in different formulas and equations, but its substance has remained relatively the same. In today’s world, guided by contradictory vectors, this relationship could be found into the tension between global flows and cultural identities. The concept of globalization, more commonly used in scientific discourses, is meant to express the coexistence and the interference of certain opposite elements and tendencies at different levels of social reality. Understanding these realities marked by unusual hybridizations requires a new mindset, a conjunctive paradigm, able to explain the combinatorial virtues of new languages and cultural creations. Given this context, under the pressure of globalization and intercultural communication, cultures change their internal structure and redefine their identity’s architecture. In a world of conjunctions, the cultural identities are viewed as a composition effect, as a result of combination between global and local.

THE ENGAGED UNIVERSITY AND STUDENT DEVELOPMENT. THE U.S. APPROACH

The concept of the engaged university has been attracting attention, energy and resources in the U.S. academic environment for the past 50 years, with the twofold benefit of community development/neighborhood enhancement/community revival, as the case may be, on the one hand, and student development in the wake of their participation in the university-initiated community projects, on the other. The paper focuses primarily on the educational benefits community-engaged universities are able to provide their students, thus building both their civic spirit and social responsibility, as well as the soft skills they need in order to perform successfully in the community-enhancement projects their university is putting forward and afterwards in their own careers.

Psychopedagogical and Criminological Aspects of Youth Risk Behavior

Risky behavior undertaken by young people is not a new phenomenon. It is a multi-faceted and complex issue determined by social and psychological factors. The definition of risky behavior in youths says that they are actions undertaken voluntarily, whose effects are uncertain, with the possibility of identifiable adverse effect on health. Among the most frequently mentioned risky behaviors of youth are: smoking, improper nutrition, alcohol consumption, drug use, suicidal behavior, accidental personal injury, crime, violence, teen-age pregnancy, sexually transmitted diseases, running away from home and homeless youth, and the lack of potential success at school and dropping out of school. This article provides an overview of the literature on risky behaviors in youths in three aspects: pedagogical, psychological and criminological.

Social security assurance for Lithuanian citizens in Latvia in 1919-1939

After the First World War tens of thousands of Lithuanian citizens lived in Latvia. Men have died in the war, but in Latvia lived their wives, children, parents and grandparents. As well every year about ten thousand Lithuanian citizens went to look for job in Latvia (especially temporary). Lithuanian citizens that lived in Latvia and Lithuanian citizens that came in Latvia needed to ensure social protection. These citizens were faced with a variety of social problems that had to be solved: lack of food, disease, left homeless children and etc. In 1924 Lithuania and Latvia have signed the Convention on social assistance. On the basis of this agreement social support was provided for Lithuanians in Latvia. Meanwhile, the citizens of Latvia in Lithuania did not settled large social problems and this Convention had been rarely applied to them. The Lithuanian diplomatic mission and various public organizations took care to ensure social security in Latvia for Lithuanians. According archival documents Lithuania spent the largest sum of money on social protection for its citizens in Latvia of all the European countries.

The Birth of a Group: Two Roma Micro-Groups in Bukovina and Transylvania

The study is based on a field trip to Roma communities the Carpathian region and focuses on the Roma living in two villages, Hlynytsya in Bukovina (Ukraine) and Uila/Weilau in Transylvania (Romania). Both cases refer to settled Roma, who make their living as hired workers in agriculture, combined with the provision of musical services to specific ethnic communities in their home region and even farther away. The analysis of some characteristics common to both Roma communities makes it possible to draw several conclusions about their historical and current development, which in both cases led to the creation of two new small Roma groups. The study comes to confirm once again that the contemporary mosaic of Roma communities in Europe, formed after several centuries of Roma presence, is only a temporary historical phenomenon.

Czy leczenie przestępców seksualnych jest skuteczne?

Celem pracy było podsumowanie metaanaliz dotyczących skuteczności terapii przestępców seksualnych oraz pokazanie problemów metodologicznych związanych z oceną jej efektów. Przedstawiono wpływ zastosowania modeli psychologii pozytywnej na skuteczność terapii na przykładzie gwałcicieli. Kierowanie się typologią gwałcicieli, pozwala na lepsze wykorzystanie zasobów klinicznych skierowanych do potrzeb konkretnych podtypów, a nie do gwałcicieli jako grupy. Zrozumienie charakteru osobowości każdego podtypu gwałciciela może mieć kluczowe znaczenie w określaniu celów terapii, prowadzenia odpowiedniego leczenia koncentrującego się zarówno na cechach interpersonalnych, jak i popełnionych przestępstwach.

Vacuum Constriction Devices in the Therapy of Erectile Dysfunction

Po co nam „stare wywiady”? O ponownym wykorzystaniu danych z badań jakościowych (rewizytach, reanalizach i nie tylko)

The article concerns issues related to the possibilities of reusing data from completed and archived qualitative research in Poland. Referring to the experience of the Qualitative Data Archive (ADJ), as well as the experiences of other similar Polish institutions, the authors point to the causes, goals, but also the effects of collecting and using this type of materials. In the further part of the text, they organize and explain the concepts used by researchers working with “the old data,” and discuss work using such resources. Based on the practices of Anglo-Saxon researchers, they distinguish from the broad category of “re-use” the concepts of re-analyses (reanalyses), as well as re-visits (revisits). They also discuss the benefits of this type of activities, including the possibility of using previously accumulated resources in the teaching process. Finally, referring to selected examples, they point to the effects of data sharing, often used for completely new purposes and in a different way than originally assumed by the primary researchers.

In every epoch we can notice a different human’s attitude towards the old age, fading away and the old people which manifests itself in distinct attitudes and ideas about this specific life’s period. Nowadays there’s a noticeable increase in the total number of elders. They become therefore an attentively observed society class. In the mass media, the “appealing” old men’s images are becoming more and more popular and common, so the reflections on this subject perceive as an interesting and important area of investigations. This article is an attempt to reconstruct a “post-modern” strategies of creating and showing the old age images.

Distinctions Between Photographs Matter: Theorising the Artistic Legitimisation of Photography in Italy

The paper investigates the collective efforts at legitimising photography as art by focusing on field-members' discourses. The analysis draws on in-depth face-to-face interviews with photography professionals and ethnographic data collected in Italy. Field actors adopt a strategy of discursive theorisation, namely differentiation, to promote the artistic legitimisation of photography. Differentiation is the discursive opposition between worthy and un-worthy individuals, groups and cultural products, sustained by referencing an artistic ideology. The analysis stresses how differentiation pertains to several analytical dimensions at the intersection of the social worlds of photography and art, and points out its limitations in legitimising photography when actors adopt differing legitimising principles.

Sztuki plastyczne w naiwnych teoriach uczniów edukacji wczesnoszkolnej

From the earliest years, thanks to the interpretation of the observed events and on the basis of social and cultural messages, children have been independently building naive theories of the world referring to concepts from the visual arts fi eld. This article presents the results of my own research. The subject of it was based on third-graders’ statements from Warsaw primary schools concerning the interpretation and description of the term ‘visual arts’. Focus interviews were used to collect qualitative data.According to the research, students’ attempts to defi ne concepts from the visual arts fi eld are very rich and detailed. Most of the naive theories can be realised by the children who have them and can be made present in the form of their verbal and non-verbal statements. Therefore, the youngest children should be involved in discussions on extended cultural topics, of which they can be fullyfl edged participants.

Benedetto Cotrugli – prekursor nauki i dydaktyki w rachunkowości oraz jego wybrani następcy. Droga podwójnego zapisu z ziemi włoskiej do Polski

The article focuses on historical aspects and the presentation of selected persons, who have had a key impact on reaching the principle of double-entry from Italy to Poland. It presents the history of the prevalence of the double-entry rule and thus Benedetto Cotrugli’s contribution to science and education in accounting. Cotrugli’s work was a compendium of merchant knowledge necessary to keep accounting books and the same time a basis for science and education in this field. It was Benedetto Cotrugli who made the first theoretical description of the rules of double accounting, exceeding by over 20 years the work of Luca Pacioli, who codified the principles of bookkeeping in his work Summa de arithmetica, geometria, proportioni et proportionalita, published in Venice in 1491. Due to the fact that the article also attempts to present the meaning of Cotrugli’s book (Book on the Art of Trade), already written in 1458, for the history of accountancy in Poland, it also refers to Ambrogio Lerici, as the first Italian who dealt with dissemination of the double-entry rules in Gdańsk.

Wariatka i zakonnica. Anusia Marii Konopnickiej jako przypowieść antropologiczna o dojrzewaniu

Cel badań. Celem badania było przeanalizowanie, w jaki sposób Maria Konopnicka wykorzystała w swej noweli Anusia, po części o charakterze wspomnieniowym, motyw inicjacji, zwłaszcza w kobiecość. Metodologia. Dociekania oparłam na ustaleniach Mircei Eliadego, Brunona Bettelheima czy Mary Douglas. Powstało dzięki temu szerokie tło, uwzględniające perspektywę religioznawczą, antropologiczną i psychiatryczną, na którym dobrze widać wielkie zalety ujęcia literackiego, całą jego subtelność i sugestywność. Czerpałam również z rozpoznań feministycznych, z tekstów Sandry M. Gilbert i Susan Gubar, Nancy K. Miller czy Krystyny Kłosińskiej, aby podkreślić wyraźną u Konopnickiej persewerację motywów często obecnych w literaturze kobiet: szaleństwo, przebywanie na marginesie, szycie, żałoba. Wyniki. W literaturze XIX wieku i nieco młodszej spotykamy nieraz obrazy domów, w których część kobiet mieszka za kulisami, w miejscach, gdzie życie toczy się intensywniej niż to odmienne, poddane pełnej kontroli życie salonów, często przedstawianych jako bezduszne, a u Konopnickiej wręcz nieobecnych. Ta inna przestrzeń staje się też przestrzenią innej kultury. By to pokazać, przywołuję przykłady baśni i ballad, a także modlitw, legend, pieśni nabożnych, w kulturach tradycyjnych wykonywanych przez kobiety dla kobiet, również dla dzieci. W taką właśnie kulturę włącza Anusia troje swych wychowanków. Następnie za pośrednictwem wariatki Kani, niegdyś ladacznicy i gorszycielki, przez wszystkich odpychanej i pogardzanej, której Anusia udziela swojej opieki, wkracza w ich życie seksualność i śmierć. Wnioski. W Anusi, przypowieści inicjacyjnej, spełnia się potrójne wtajemniczenie zasugerowane przez Eliadego: wedle tego badacza, człowiek wstępuje w dorosłość za sprawą sacrum, Erosa i Tanatosa – z chwilą, kiedy pozna te trzy obszary, nie jest już dzieckiem.

THE IMPACT OF ETHNO-LINGUISTIC FEDERALISM ON STATE BUILDING, THE ETHIOPIAN PERSPECTIVE

Ethno-linguistic federalism in Ethiopia has caused ethno-national diversified groups to be recognized and promoted. The federal formula lacked genuine institutions and practices to promote democratic state unity in diversity. The federal system accelerated diversity which failed to balance ethno-national identity with Ethiopian state citizenship as a result it endangered the state sustenance. Failure to balance national diversity and Ethiopian citizenship brought adverse consequence, such as, ethnic based campus conflict among university students, the displacement of Oromos from Somali regional state, the displacement the Amharas and Oromos from Benishangul Gumuz, the Gedeo people’s displacement from Guji Oromia region…etc are some to mention. Above all, ethno-linguistic national identity is taken as a sole defining identity which has created a stumbling block for state/national building in Ethiopia. This article argues it is a must to foster a democratic federal political system in Ethiopia along with building genuine democratic institutions that are accountable to the people. There should, moreover, be a national consensus on maintaining state unity within diversity so that the voices of national minorities (both titular and non-titular) in different regions are heard and respected by allowing them to have political seats in their respective regions.

Centralne planowanie i lokalne wykonanie: wyzwania wielopoziomowego systemu implementacji polityki ochrony środowiska naturalnego w Chinach

The assessment of the implementation of the environmental policy in China is usually made in the context of the application of environmental law. The author proposes a different approach, assuming that the policy outcomes depend not only on such or other prerogatives at individual levels of management but on the mutual interaction of individual actors. The article indicates to what extent the central authority is able to define policy goals along with an adequate system of supervision of implementation, what is the perception of local authorities, and in what conditions local authorities are willing to accept the objectives of the ecological policy. It has been identified in which conditions sub-national authorities may distort centrally planned activities related to environmental protection.

The author refers to the concept of epistemic communities, comparing them to contemporary concepts of „information bubbles.

On revocation of the lawyer’s monopoly through introducing the professional institution of legal advisers

The article studies the legal nature of the introduction of the lawyer’s monopoly in Ukraine. The author notes the introduction of the lawyer’s monopoly in Ukraine had to take four steps. However, at the last stage of the introduction of the lawyer’s monopoly, the legislator amended the procedural codes regulating the course of civil, commercial, and administrative proceedings. With these changes, the legislator expanded the concept “self-representation” by substituting the concept of “representation”. In addition, the legislator brought in a draftto revoke the lawyer’s monopoly which was approved by the Constitutional Court of Ukraine. The scientist states that the relevant strategy of abolishing the lawyer’s monopoly is not a positive phenomenon. The introduction of court representation of citizens, business entities, state bodies, central and local authorities by a professional institute of advocacy is an upside in reforming the Ukrainian legal system. However, according to the author, the profession of a lawyer is primarily aimed at providing defense in criminal proceedings or when bringing to administrative responsibility or considering a case of an administrative offense. At the same time, the scientist marks that the reversion to the previous wording of Article 131-2 of the Constitution of Ukraine is inadmissible since the provision of legal services in Ukraine should be carried out professionally. After analyzing the legislation of the Republic of Poland, the author has concluded that lawyers and legal advisers, who carry out practical legal activities on a professional basis and permits, provide the public with legal aid. However, the only difference between a lawyer and a legal adviser in the Republic of Poland is that the latter cannot provide legal assistance in criminal proceedings, unlike a lawyer. Therefore, to create a professional and competitive market of legal services in Ukraine, the researcher proposes to borrow the experience of the Republic of Poland and introduce a professional institute of legal advisers in Ukraine, as this profession is legally identified in Ukraine.

Zastosowanie technologii informacyjno-komunikacyjnych w szkolnym nauczaniu religii w świetle najnowszych dokumentów katechetycznych

Rewolucja technologiczna, która dokonała się w ostatnich dziesięcioleciach, dotyczy w zasadzie wszystkich dziedzin życia, przekroczyła także drzwi szkół. Współcześni nauczyciele, także katecheci, to przeważnie osoby kompetentne informatycznie, które stosują z powodzeniem w swojej pracy cyfrowe narzędzia. Sytuacja ta powinna mieć odzwierciedlenie w najnowszych dokumentach katechetycznych zawierających fundamentalne zasady i wskazania, które nadają kształt nauczaniu religii. W niniejszym opracowaniu przedstawiono wyniki analizy trzech dokumentów: Dyrektorium o katechizacji, Podstawy programowej katechezy Kościoła katolickiego w Polsce, Programu nauczania religii rzymskokatolickiej w przedszkolach i szkołach oraz zaproponowano postulaty dotyczące posługi katechetycznej w odniesieniu do zastosowania technologii informacyjno-komunikacyjnych w szkolnym nauczaniu religii.
