Soudobé historické prameny: Minimalizace (osobních) údajů, omezení jejich uložení a (de)anonymizace v oblasti archivace

Soudobé historické prameny: Minimalizace (osobních) údajů, omezení jejich uložení a (de)anonymizace v oblasti archivace

Author(s): Mikuláš Čtvrtník / Language(s): Czech Issue: 2/2024

One of the primary objectives of archives and archiving in the public interest is not only the long-term preservation of archival material and its accessibility, but also the protection of the data that the archival material contains and, with it, the protection of the privacy and personal rights of the people referenced in such materials. Thus far, archival science and archival practice have demonstrated a tendency to overlook the potential risks associated with the misuse of personal and, especially, sensitive personal data contained in archival materials. One of the most effective tools for protecting data is destruction. Čtvrtník focuses his attention on data reduction and minimization. He situates these procedures within the context of the general right to be forgotten, as understood by European Union and other legislation. He also highlights the specificities of the process of archival selection and evaluation of documents, when the archive decides which documents from the production of various public and private originators will be irreversibly destroyed and which will be taken over for permanent archiving. At the same time, the author clarifies the issue of anonymization and pseudonymization of data in documents and archival materials, as well as the principal differences between these practices, following his own model of the four categories of the right to be forgotten. Finally, he addresses the increasingly pressing risks arising from the rapid improvement of techniques for de-anonymizing data and re-identifying individuals.

Author(s): Vera Serjant / Language(s): Romanian Issue: 2/2024

The National Museum of History of Moldova houses a large number of collections of objects that belonged to prominent figures in the field of science and education. Among them, noteworthy is the collection of Anton Ablov (1905-1978), Doctor of Chemical Sciences, university professor, full member of the Academy of Sciences of the Moldavian SSR, one of the founders of Chisinau State University. The formation of the collection began immediately after the academician’s death; the first exhibits were transferred to the then Republican Museum of Military Glory in 1978. From 1985 to 2007, the collection was replenished with objects transferred from other Chisinau museums or donated by colleagues and students of the outstanding scientist (D. Batîr, L. Chapurina, N. Proshina, Ts. Kononova, E. Levitsky, V. Shafransky, A. Dobrov). Through this article, those interested can familiarize themselves with the entire collection. The work is supplemented by a complete list of the objects. These material evidence emphasize the primary role of Academician Anton Ablov in the development of chemical science in Moldova and are important sources in the study of the history of science and education in the Prut-Dniester region.

UN REPERTORIU ARHEOLOGIC AL JUDEȚULUI BACĂU?

Author(s): Dimitrie-Ovidiu Boldur / Language(s): Romanian Issue: 2/2023

The preparation and creation of Archaeological Repertories of Romanian Counties is a topic that has been approach by specialists in the field ever since the middle of the 20th century, through the famous „Work plan of the Institute for History and Philosophy of Bucharest”. Thus, in 1949, this plan foresaw the „preparation of Romanian Archaeological Repertory”. The purpose of such papers, either those regarding the counties, or those of general nature, has been and still is „to collect and group information on archaeological discoveries on Romanian territory”, the general concept being that to prepare „a guiding scientific instrument for future researches in the field, specialized studies and setting a base to prepare the country’s archaeological map”. Thus, for Bacau County, as integral part of Romanian administrative territory, up to the present date, no such scientific document, so necessary for young and old archaeologists alike has not yet been prepared, edited and printed. Over the years, several synthesis concerning archaeological research in the country have been published, among which we can mention the studies/ articles published by: Marilena Florescu, Viorel Capitanu (1969); Viorel Capitanu (1982); Elena-Lacramioara Istina (2007); Vasile Ursachi (2007); Ioan Mitrea (2007) or Alexandru Artimon (2007). At the same time, not without importance is the Chronicle of Archaeological Research in Romania, a publication that since 1983 has developed a true spirit of contemporary archaeological research in our country. Diagnosis reports and land assessment, archaeological research reports (preventive, salvaging, systematic) make reference to significant discoveries on Bacau County territory as well. Could these synthesis (published in 1969, 1982 and 2007) and the archaeological reports published between 1983 and 2021 (including those that will follow) be a starting point for the preparation, editing and printing of an Archaeological Repertory of Bacau County? The ruthless time shall prove the utility of such a publication.

What Will be Left of Those Years? The Ethnographic Archives in Poland in the Context of Contemporary Anthropological Criticism

What Will be Left of Those Years? The Ethnographic Archives in Poland in the Context of Contemporary Anthropological Criticism

Author(s): Monika Golonka-Czajkowska / Language(s): English Issue: 51/2023

The subject of the present article is a reflection on the epistemological value of ethnographic materials collected by ethnologists in academic archives, especially during the period of the People’s Republic of Poland. The author disagrees with Filip Wróblewski, who, in one of his articles, radically criticises not only the scientific value of the aforementioned archives, but more broadly the activities of the researchers themselves at that time. Therefore, from the large catalogue of problems that emerge from reflection on these archives, the author first focuses on the possibilities of using these materials in current research, including attempts at re-contextualisation, as well as the ethical issues related to today’s archival methods and access rules.
