Zamiarem Autorów książki jest interdyscyplinarne spojrzenie na kapitał ludzki i kapitał społeczny, a także na ich związki z rozwojem regionalnym. Określenia kapitał ludzki używają chętniej ekonomiści, kapitał społeczny jest natomiast domeną socjologów. Jednak przekonanie o istotnej roli czynników niematerialnych w pobudzaniu rozwoju gospodarczego i społecznego sprawia, że oba terminy wykroczyły już dawno poza granice swoich dyscyplin i są i intensywnie eksploatowane zarówno przez naukowców, jak i publicystów, polityków czy działaczy społecznych. Nie jest możliwe ani celowe przeprowadzenie ścisłej linii demarkacyjnej oddzielającej pojęcia kapitał ludzki i kapitał społeczny w kontekście rozwoju regionalnego. Warto się jednak zastanowić nad różnicami w ich genezie, teorii i sposobach pomiaru. Autorzy dokonują pełnego przeglądu podstaw teoretycznych obu form kapitału, zarówno z socjologicznego, jak i ekonomicznego punktu widzenia. Podejmują także próbę oszacowania wpływu zasobów kapitału ludzkiego i społecznego na osiągane dochody oraz tempo wzrostu gospodarczego polskich regionów.

Praca koncentruje się na analizie kompetencji samorządu gminy w podstawowych obszarach polityki społecznej, gospodarczej i przestrzennej, dzięki czemu stanowi kompendium wiedzy na temat uwarunkowań prawno-organizacyjnych prowadzenia polityki lokalnej. Autor weryfikuje decyzje podejmowane w siedmiu gminach strefy podmiejskiej, wskazując sposoby badania polityki lokalnej oraz przedstawia nowe możliwości analiz w ramach geograficznych systemów informacyjnych (GIS).Analityczno-empiryczna część pracy powstała przy wykorzystaniu ilościowych oraz jakościowych metod badawczych. Zebrane podczas badań materiały i ich wielowymiarowa analiza statystyczna oraz interpretacja jakościowa pozwoliły na identyfikację określonych typów polityk lokalnych właściwych dla badanej strefy podmiejskiej. Wyniki badań sondażowych przeprowadzonych na próbie ponad tysiąca respondentów umożliwiły określenie zadowolenia mieszkańców z działań podejmowanych przez samorządy lokalne. Wnikliwa i bogata w materiał badawczo-dokumentacyjny analiza dała podstawę do oceny jakości życia mieszkańców urbanizującej się strefy podmiejskiej oraz prowadzonej polityki lokalnej w kontekście koncepcji ładu przestrzeni publicznej.Dr inż. Grzegorz Masik jest adiunktem w Katedrze Geografii Ekonomicznej Uniwersytetu Gdańskiego. Ukończył studia magisterskie na kierunku geografia oraz inżynierskie o specjalności geodezja i systemy informacji przestrzennej. Zajmuje się przede wszystkim zagadnieniami dotyczącymi planowania przestrzennego, jakości życia, polityki lokalnej oraz percepcji przestrzeni publicznej. W kręgu jego zainteresowań znajduje się również zastosowanie geograficznych systemów informacyjnych w badaniach społeczno-ekonomicznych. W 2009 roku obronił rozprawę doktorską, za którą otrzymał nagrodę Gdańskiego Towarzystwa Naukowego i Prezydenta Miasta Gdańska. Praca ta stała się podstawą tej książki.

The VII International Conference in memoriam German Fyodorov-Davydov (November 8—12, Yalta, Crimea) will be attended by 95 researchers from 6 countries with reports covering the entire territory of the Mongol Empire from the Pacific Ocean to the Danube. The seven panels of the scientific forum — the Far East; Siberia and the Trans-Baikal area; Central Asia; the Middle Volga; the Lower Volga; North Caucasus and Transcaucasia; the Northern Black Sea area, and the Crimea — are based on the geographical principle, so as to clearly illustrate the extension of the Mongol Empire from East to West, as well as the diversity of archaeological studies of the Golden Horde.The proposed publication is aimed at elucidating the issues related to the study of historical geography of the regions dominated by the Golden Horde and other states formed by the Mongols, and territories adjacent to them, as well as their role and place in the medieval world. An important role in the framework of this scientifi c publication is played by the materials associated with the multidisciplinary approach and scientific methods of archaeological research in order to determine major trade routes and commodity flows through the Golden Horde territory, the extent of home handicraft and agricultural products distribution, life support systems within the huge medieval cities, and involvement of the steppe nomadic sub culture in the processes mentioned above. In line with these objectives, materials on historical topography of separate archaeological sites in the territorial and chronological framework under study are offered for a scientific discussion.

Problematykę książki wyznaczają relacje między trzema pojęciami i - co za tym idzie - koncepcjami teoretycznymi: tożsamością miasta, tożsamością mieszkańców oraz przestrzenią publiczną. W publikacji podjęto próbę uchwycenia elementów należących do specyficznych i dystynkcyjnych zasobów wiedzy, form ekspresji oraz znaczeń, które wpływają w rozmaity sposób na kształtowanie się współczesnych tożsamości ludzi i miejsc. Trzy wybrane do analiz empirycznych miasta: Gdańsk, Gliwice i Wrocław, stanowią interesujący obszar badań ze względu na kształtowanie się tam nowych tożsamości w kontekście ich historii oraz transformacji przestrzeni publicznych. Podejmując badania, autorzy założyli, że struktury tożsamościowe nie są czymś ponadczasowym i niezmiennym, a o ich specyfice decyduje szczególny zestaw czynników warunkujących ich formowanie. Cechuje je dynamika przekształceń o charakterze symbolicznym i przestrzennym. Nie sposób w krótkiej recenzji uwydatnić wszystkich wątków tego opracowania. Niemniej aspekt miast zakotwiczonych z jednej strony w przestrzeni historii i teraźniejszości, a z drugiej w globalnej przestrzeni oraz w świadomości, postawach czy emocjach mieszkańców wydaje się w znaczący sposób rozszerzać perspektywę ujmowania społecznej kategorii przestrzeni. W tym ujęciu nie oznacza to zwykłego, przestrzennego wymiaru społecznych relacji, ale zmianę relacji między przestrzenią i społeczeństwem na podbudowie historii miast, ich aktualnej kondycji i perspektyw. Rolę łącznika między tymi aspektami (chciałoby się powiedzieć w języku klasycznej socjologii: ”płaszczyzny więziotwórczej„) powierza się tu przestrzeniom publicznym, jakie mają wspomagać procesualne i dynamiczne przebiegi kształtowania się tożsamości badanych miast i ich mieszkańców. Analysis of the functioning of selected Latin American cities in the context of changes taking place in the socio-political situation of Latin American countries from the last decade of the 20th century up to the present day. Bogotá (Colombia), Lima (Peru), and Toluca (Mexico) are the subject of study in this book. In these cities the democratization of life, the increase in the importance of local organizations, the formation of civic society and the improvement in the quality of managing the city have a strong influence on the changes occurring in the traditional model of socio-spatial segregation dating back to the 1970s.

W reakcji na powojenną przemoc antysemicką. Samoobrona Żydów w Łodzi – uwarunkowania społeczno-polityczne i przestrzenne

Jewish self-defense (Special Commission), like other forms of community life of Polish Jews, was a kind of sensation in Poland after World War II. It was created as a result of a wave of murders in the country, “anti-Jewish provocations, assaults on trains and the killing of Jewish passengers and, finally, the culmination of anti-Jewish activity of armed bands”, which was the Kielce pogrom of July 4, 1946. Actually, the Commission operated for a very short time, only until the end of May 1947. In total, 200 guard groups were formed consisting of 2,500 armed people (with approximately 1,000 rifles, 100 automatic weapons, over 1,000 pistols and 120 grenades), providing a round-the-clock protection of close to 390 objects of the following Jewish institutions: committees, child care homes, nursing homes, repatriate homes, schools, canteens, cooperatives, factories employing a larger number of Jews, Jewish parties, kibbutzim. The establishment of special commissions fulfilled its purpose – about 2,000 interventions, at various levels of government, were carried out throughout Poland, as a result of which attacks or provocations were thwarted and the danger was averted. Apart from performing the primary function of self-defense, the commission’s activity had a significant psychological impact. The presence of guards armed with rifles and automatic weapons in the vicinity of Jewish institutions eased somewhat the “prevailing moods of panic” among Jews that had been caused by the Kielce pogrom. It also had a deterrent effect on potential attackers, or neutralized the willingness to show hostile attitudes towards those who identified themselves as Jewish. The commissions also helped to manage the need, which many Jews had had since the beginning of the war, to stand up for the nation undergoing systematic extermination.

My path leads me again to the Slav peoples of the Danube and Balkan countries. I want to see how the Zadrugas — the home or family communities — which excited me so much on my journey in 1867, have changed since then. Leroy-Beaulieu and Moritz Block severely criticized my antiquated conception of those venerable communities, while Stuart Mill shared it and Henry Maine understood it. Under Bishop Strossmayr's guidance, I will first inspect the Zadrugas of Slavonia in the Djakovo area, then I will continue my observations in Bosnia, Serbia and Bulgaria, learning about the political and economic situation of these countries, which I have already discussed in my book »Prussia and Austria since Sadowa«. The favorable opportunity to undertake such investigations must be seized without hesitation, because a rapid transformation is taking place under the influence of railways, new constitutions and closer ties with Western Europe. The inhabitants of those countries will soon exchange their peculiar, hundred-year-old customs and customs, their picturesque costumes for what ist usually called modern civilization, and then regulate their whole way of thinking and living in the manner of Paris or London.
