This rare occurrence has invited the public to enjoy, even for scientist as a mean of doing research or for public as a curiosity. A mud volcano is a geological formation created by the expulsion of pressurized gasses and mud from below the Earth’s crust. By using a systematic review process, the authors review the phenomena by using physical, chemical, and geological approaches. The review process comprises five phases: framing questions for a review, identifying relevant work, assessing the quality of studies, summarizing evidences, and interpreting the findings. The results show the physical and chemical dimensions of mud volcano and depict to what extent the physical and geological efforts to stop the disaster. In this study, there are some additional references and sources of new knowledge for scientists, citizens, and government.

Troglodytes in Thrace 1. Sources and Location

Author(s): Stoyanka Dimitrova / Language(s): English Issue: 23-24/2017

The present text is the first part of a broader study and it provides a new perspective to certain aspects of the issue of the Troglodytes in Thrace. The analysis and the reinterpretation of the available written evidence lead to reconsidering of the traditional view that Troglodytes inhabited the territories close to the Danube Delta, or lived in the caves along the Black Sea coast, giving arguments for a new localisation in the interior of the Getic lands.

Човешкото въздействие върху съвременния климат – мит или реалност

Author(s): Vladimir Vlaskov / Language(s): Bulgarian Issue: 17/2019

The wild technological advancement since the mid of the 20th century and he progress in research around the earthen field determined new horizons and priorities in the scientific studies related to climate. In the end of the 20th century start the so called “high-frequency studies of the polar radiance”. Those are the American programs HAARP and HPAAS – Alaska, and LIRPU-Porto Rico; the Russian SURA – Nijniy Novgorod, and the EISAT (Norway, Germany, France, Great Britain, Finland, Japan and China) – nearby Tromsø in Norway. The official purpose of those research programs is the improvement of communications, and satellite observation. But in the last decade in the scientific field it is more and more actively discussed that the priority are actually the developments and experimental activities with the so called “climatic weapon”, realizing direct human influence on the climatic conditions in specific parts of the earth surface.

Procesul regenerării siturilor de tip brownfield – un obiectiv cheie în dezvoltarea urbană durabilă (1)

Procesul regenerării siturilor de tip brownfield – un obiectiv cheie în dezvoltarea urbană durabilă (1)

Author(s): Michael Alexander H. E. Birgmayr / Language(s): English Issue: 1/2021

Brownfield regeneration, involving the reintegration of derelict and abandoned sites into their economic environments, is a key element of sustainable urban development and tackles environmental, social, economic and cultural issues, which are the main aspects of sustainability. Most Eastern and Central European cities, mainly because of their history and the features of transition to a market-led economy, carry an exceptionally large burden of under-used and brownfield land. This land represents a hole in the urban fabric, with significant losses in economic efficiency, social cohesion and quality of life. At the same time, new development on agricultural land that could have been located on recycled brownfield land is contributing to urban sprawl. This further reduces the city and community economic performance and competitiveness. Given this context, I have decided to come up with an article that deals with the brownfield issue, explaining the necessity of implementing successful strategies for the brownfield regeneration process at European level, the factors that contribute to such successful stories, as well as the steps and the barriers towards a sustainable urban development from the perspective of its 4 dimensions: economic, social and cultural, environmental and institutional.

Procesul regenerării siturilor de tip brownfield – un obiectiv cheie în dezvoltarea urbană durabilă (2)

Author(s): Michael Alexander H. E. Birgmayr / Language(s): English Issue: 1/2021

For many EU communities’ brownfields emergence was, or still is, a new issue, the complexity of which has not been fully perceived, and the economic, social and environmental effects of which have not been fully understood. In some European countries brownfield reuse policies and redevelopment techniques have been successfully practiced for more than 40 years. In other countries, this is still an emerging subject. This is the reason why sharing knowledge and experience on brownfield reuse is so important in the European context. A needed industrial development on a brownfield site, despite its unavoidable negative environmental impacts, can be more sustainable than a public park on the same site, as it helps preserve alternative greenfield sites. In addition, the proposed development could generate jobs resulting in positive effects in the social and economic dimensions. Increases in local municipality income could be allocated to environmental improvements in the surrounding area. There are many examples (so called “best practices”) reporting how human factor as an initiator of brownfield regeneration – e.g. making a good project proposal, gaining a local community support, acquirement of grant titles, etc. – have overcome location handicaps or modified the characteristics of suitability of area or concrete brownfield site according to specific project purposes. In this respect, it is very important to study specific local political, cultural and social structures and contexts of regeneration processes, roles of specific actors.

Role prefixoidů z klasických jazyků při obohacování slovní zasoby (nejen) češtiny na příkladu komponentů bio- a eko-

Author(s): Eliška Králová / Language(s): Czech Issue: 31/2022

The word-formation components originating in the classical languages are both malleable and effective device of marking new facts resulting from rapidly occuring changes on the global scale. What seems to be a decisive factor here, are considerable requirements of contemporary language systems towards newly coined words, that relate to those words’ functionality and internationality. The newly formed words need to mirror the transient realities of life and meet the communicative needs of speakers who live in the reality characterised by fast civilisation changes. Both the word-building formants originating in Latin and those originating in Greek fulfill those requirements. Latin and Greek prefixoids, in addition to being highly productive, may be easily combined with word-building components of native and foreign origin. On the one hand, it is an advantageous situation from the viewpoint of a given language users, while on the other, the said situation creates a risk of abusing and exhausting the meaning of some words, which brings about the need to eventually replace them with others. The speakers who gradually broaden their lexicons by including the newly-formed words may, in the course of this process, utilise their preexisting knowledge and thusfar experience that on the conceptual level correspond to the usage of word-formation components originating in Latin and Greek. The author of the article has combined her linguistic knowledge pertaining to how prefixes and prefixoids originating in Latin and Greek function in the Czech language, with the research findings of language didactics. At the same time, the author indicates particular case where the English language influences the Czech language.

Troodos is the largest mountain system on the island of Cyprus, located in the western part, with the highest peak Olympia or Olympus (1952 m). Troodos is recognized as an international reserve, and it is very different from other similar mountain ranges in the world. For vulcanologists, Mount Olympus’s top is the storage of knowledge about species and soil formation, 90 million years ago. The mountain itself appears in the prehistoric age, in the collision of the continental plates. Today, Troodos Mountain has become a developed tourist infrastructure with different resorts not only for summer recreation, but also for skiing, as well as for pilgrimage, cognitive and cultural tourism. The economy of the region is mainly based on agriculture (grape growing and wine production) and tourism. The area is famous for its mountain resorts and picturesque mountain villages, revealing traditions and rich historical heritage preserved in the well-preserved Byzantine churches and monasteries, ancient ruins and fortress walls. According to data for 2016, the Cypriot economy has reported record levels of revenue from tourism.

Метафорични народни географски термини, които произлизат от названието на лицето в българския и румънския език

Author(s): Boryana Mihaylova / Language(s): English,Bulgarian,Romanian Issue: 1/2017

The folk geographical terms derived from the body part term ‘face’ in the Bulgarian and Romanian languages are examined in this paper: Bulgarian лице ‘face’, ‘southern or south-eastern slope’, ‘place with southern exposure’; Romanian faþã ‘face’, ‘southern slope’, ‘forest on a southern slope’, ‘place exposed to the sun (the moon, the wind, the fire)’, ‘prominent part of an eminence’. In both languages, those metaphorical terms have similar meanings and distribution and express the same conceptual metaphors – THE MOUNTAIN IS A PERSON, THE EMINENCE IS A PERSON, THE EARTH IS A PERSON. Two of the meanings of the Romanian word faþã ‘face’ are considered to be metaphtonymies – ‘forest on a southern slope’ and ‘prominent part of an eminence’.

Бележки за името на Пирин планина

Бележки за името на Пирин планина

Author(s): Nikolay Dautov / Language(s): English,Bulgarian,Polish Issue: 1/2018

The article starts with a review on what has been written so far about the denominations of the Pirin mountain - Orbel, Beride and Yudenitsa – considered to be older – and outlines some hypotheses about their origin. Then we present the interpretations of different authors of the meaning behind the name Pirin. Some consider it to be Slavic, and others – Thracian. Most recently, there’s another view that the name has Ancient – Bulgarian (Bulgarian, Prehistoric – Bulgarian, Proto – Bulgarian) origins. The analysis of the different hypotheses results in two leading interpretations. The first one is the Slavic, supported by arguments from Ivan Duridanov. And the second is the Ancient – Bulgarian, formulated by Petar Goliiski, on the basis of a promulgated document by Kazimir Popkonstantinov from the 9th century, where the name Pirin has been attested. Based on what has already been written and the thorough analysis of the geographical (territorial) display of all registered toponyms so far, linked to the name Pirin (Pìrin (Pirìn), Pirìn kuzù, Pìrina, Pirin, Pirìnski vàlog, Pirìnsko prisòe, Pirìnski livàdi and Perin), an interesting conclusion could be drawn. Almost all of the above mentioned denominations are registered within the confines of Medieval and present day Bulgaria, except for two: Perin in Novgorod, Ukraine and Pirin in Sarajevo! The Ukrainian Novgorod is situated at the middle stream of the river Dnieper – a region that was the heart of Old Great Bulgaria – the domain of Khan Kubrat. It is harder, however, to provide evidence of Bulgarian presence in Sarajevo. The inclusion of Bosnia and Herzegovina within the confines of the Bulgarian country during the time of the kings Simeon I the Great and Samuil does not prove by any means that Bulgarians used to live there. However, Petar Goliiski quotes a message from the Armenian Simeon Lehaci (from the period of 1608 – 1620), connected with the presence of a Bul garian ethnical element in Sarajevo, which says: “It took us five days from here to get to Bosnia Saraj [Sarajevo], a big city, built on a high mountain… The inhabitants of this country [Bosnia] are big, tall, strong and muscular men. They have absolutely no knowledge of Turkish language and speak only Bulgarian… There are Bulgarian monasteries all around Bosnia… Everyone in Bosnia speaks Bulgarian”. This explains the Bulgarian relation to the presence of the toponym Pirin in Sarajevo. The toponyms of Pirin are widespread in lands, which had been inhabited by the Old Bulgarians in the past, therefore there’s a reason to believe that the oronym Pirin has a more plausible Ancient – Bulgarian, rather than Slavic origin.
