Zanim skrystalizował się zakres badań, czyli o rozwoju nauk o człowieku i rasach ludzkich na ziemiach polskich w drugiej połowie XIX wieku

Author(s): Katarzyna Wrzesińska / Language(s): Polish Issue: 20/2021

The article describes the debate of Polish scholars about the purposes and scope of research in the field of anthropology. A number of factors had an impact on the course of this debate and its diverse conclusions. The second half of the 19th century marks an initial period of the development of this branch of study. First anthropologists were physicians from profession and that is why the emphasis was put on the significance of research concerning the physical aspect of humans and the division of humans into different races. At the same time, a need to combine biology with culture and social life of humans arose. This approach was to be supported with the use of sciences considered as auxiliary to physical anthropology such as history, ethnography, ethnology, sociology, linguistics, and archeology. The reception of the Western science did not offer readymade patterns. In fact, in the West, a number of established scholarly attitudes existed simultaneously, and were shaped by independent specific national traditions. Moreover, the split of human sciences into separate disciplines had not been completed yet. Accordingly, synonymic terms such as anthropology, ethnology, and ethnography were still in use interchangeably in Poland.Polish scholarly writings as well as works popularizing science – both are sources of material in this article – played a significant role in elaborating a way to understand the emerging human sciences. The problem of anthropology was thus introduced and a wider circle of readers became interested in it. Without independent Polish studies and without the reception of foreign research during the period of partitions in Poland, human sciences would not have developed after 1918 in the sovereign Polish Republic.

Historical school of Mykhailo Hrushevsky in Lviv: formation, structure, personal contribution

Author(s): Vitaliy Telvak,Vasyl Pedych,Viktoria Telvak / Language(s): English Issue: 20/2021

This article deals with the genesis and functioning of the Lviv Historical School of M. Hrushevsky. The plans to create a historical school of Ukrainian character at the University of Lviv were made by the initiators of the department of World History – specializing in with the history of the Western Europe – i.e.O. Barvinsky, V. Antonovych, and O. Koninsky, as well as by M. Hrushevsky. The school had a two-stage structure of formation and functioning: the historical seminar of the University of Lviv and the section for the history of philosophy of the Scientific Society of Shevchenko. It made it possible to gather creative young people on the first stage at the University of Lviv, and introduce them to the scientific work and to prepare and train the new employees on the second stage in the section for the history of philosophy of the Scientific Society of Shevchenko. The composition of the school were elaborated relying on the firstly determined criteria (taking part in the scientific seminar, the work in the sections and commissions of the Scientific Society Shevchenko, scholar maturity etc). It was determined that the Lviv school counted 20 young historians, among whom one was a woman. The Ukrainian Galician Center of Hrushevsky was characterized as a common school of the leadership type, whose didactic tasks were accompanied by the simultaneous creation of the new Ukrainian historical ideology. It was concluded that the Lviv Historical School was undoubtedly the most important humanistic phenomenon in the Ukrainian science, both in terms of effectiveness and the temporal range of influence. Its appearance marked the entry of Ukrainian science into a new level of professionalization.

The impacts of architecture and decorative arts on health based on medical sources in the Muslim societies during the medieval era

The impacts of architecture and decorative arts on health based on medical sources in the Muslim societies during the medieval era

Author(s): Jafar Taheri / Language(s): English Issue: 20/2021

This article aims to provide a historical overview of the impact of architecture and decorative arts on health and health preservation in Muslim societies during the medieval era. Based on primary medical sources, this article provides a historical interpretation of the theoretical origin of the ignored link between medicine and architecture (and decorative arts). Our findings indicate that some empirical results concerning the effects and aspects of built environments (architectural spaces) on health and treatment–both physical and mental– have been considered in the medical sources. Practical instructions of these sources introduced two theoretical achievements: 1) an introduction to the historical knowledge of environmental health and design of healthy places, and 2) a comparative analogy of the built environment and human nature (organism), which became a theoretical basis for the relationship between natural sciences, architecture, and the decorative arts in the middle ages. Considerations of the study show the extent to which architects and artisans, based on the teachings and instructions of physicians, dealt with the structural and content adaptation models of architecture and decorative arts to human organism and nature.

Activities of the Emigration Museum in Gdynia with Regard to Developing Symbolic and Identity Ties with the Polish Diaspora

Author(s): Rafał Raczyński,Kinga Alina Langowska / Language(s): English Issue: 2/2023

This article aims to outline the activities of the Emigration Museum in Gdynia (Polish abbrev. MEG) inbuilding relations with the Polish diaspora and maintaining Polish identity among Poles and peoplewith Polish ancestry living abroad. Its main thesis is that the MEG, as a comparatively small institution, has a relatively large potential for shaping symbolic and identity ties with the Polish diasporaand could potentially be an important actor for activities undertaken in this sphere, implementedas part of a broadly defined policy with regard to and for Poles living abroad. The article consistsof an introduction, three main sections and a conclusion. In the first section, we briefly define thediasporic policy in its subject and object dimensions, present selected concepts that typify this policy, and point out the role of culture and cultural institutions in building symbolic and identity tieswith the diaspora. The second section was devoted to presenting the history, circumstances of theestablishment and organizational basis of the Emigration Museum in Gdynia. The museum, although technically a self-government cultural institution, is the first and only museum in the country to show the history of emigration from Poland and Polish lands in a comprehensive way. Sectionthree, on the other hand, focuses on showcasing selected MEG activities in forming symbolic andidentity ties with the Polish diaspora.

Granica jako zasób, granica jako wehikuł czasu. Społeczne reprezentacje diaspor na pograniczu rosyjsko-chińskim

Author(s): Zbigniew Szmyt / Language(s): Polish Issue: 2/2023

These emigrants created a number of diasporas inhabiting the border zones with the USSR. The Soviet authorities treated these communities as hostile, and the hermetic nature of the Soviet border meant that contact between the diasporas and the country of origin was negligible. With thecollapse of the USSR and the opening of the borders of the diaspora, they began to play an essential role in the so-called ethnic revival of minorities in Russia. The incorporation of previously demonized, disloyal, and hostile frontier communities required the introduction of new discourses and representations in local public histories. On the example of the Buryat diaspora in China, the article shows the process of including diasporas in the field of ethnic politics in Siberia and negotiating their social status in contemporary Russia.

Акценти и предизвикателства при изследването на отношенията България – ЕИО/ЕС през втората половина на 80-те и 90-те години на ХХ век

Author(s): Irina Yakimova / Language(s): Bulgarian Issue: 1/2024

The article presents an overview of key research themes and addresses challenges inherent in the study of Bulgaria’s relations with the European political and economic sphere during the late 1980s and the 1990s. Rather than providing a comprehensive examination of Bulgaria’s transition, the focus is primarily on the historiographical aspect, delving into Bulgaria’s path toward the EEC/EU. The article outlines the difficulties researchers face when working with archival sources and electronic information, emphasizing the positive impact of expanded access to declassified documents, outlining, for example, the various stages of the negotiation process between Bulgaria and the EEC/EU’s institutions before and after the landmark year of 1989. It marks the initial systematic attempt to categorize Sofia-Brussels relations from a historical perspective, representing a noteworthy contribution to the field. This is the first attempt at such a systemization of Sofia-Brussels relations from a historical perspective, which is one of the contributions of the present article.

Nieznany list arcybiskupa gnieźnieńskiego Bodzanty z Kosowic herbu Szeliga z 24 września 1387 roku

Nieznany list arcybiskupa gnieźnieńskiego Bodzanty z Kosowic herbu Szeliga z 24 września 1387 roku

Author(s): Michał Hankus / Language(s): Polish Issue: 19/2023

The Archbishop of Gniezno, Bodzanta of Kosowice, of the Szeliga coat of arms, is one of the most controversial figures of late fourteenth-century Poland. He began his career as the governor of Kraków-Sandomierz during the reign of Casimir the Great. He held this office for over 20 years, while also developing his career as a clergyman. His service as a canon in Kraków, a scholastic in Wiślica and finally as provost of the collegiate church of St. Florian in Kleparz were successful. In 1382, by the appointment of king Louis of Hungary, he became the archbishopric of Gniezno, where he remained until his death in 1388. The controversy surrounding Bodzanta stems from his unstable policy during the interregnum following the death of Louis of Hungary. In addition, Jan of Czarnków left in his chronicle an unfavourable opinion about the archbishop, representing him as incompetent and his actions as destructive for the Polish Church. The aim of this article is to highlight the conflict between Bodzanta of Kosowice and prince Władysław Opolczyk, which took place in 1387. The analysis is based on a newly discovered letter of the archbishop to parish priests in the Wieluń region, found in the collections of the Jagiellonian Library. The conflict was caused by the receipt by the prince’s officials of questionable benefits from villages belonging to the clergy of that region. The archbishop defended the local clergy, imposing an interdict on Wieluń and threatening the ruler with excommunication. This study fills a gap related to relations between the most important personages in the Kingdom of Poland at the end of the fourteenth century. In addition, it verifies the state of research on the history of such towns as Krzywarzeka. The attitude and determination of the archbishop in curbing the prince’s decisions and actions contradicts the opinion about Bodzanta’s weakness throughout his pontificate.

Struțul cu potcoavă în cioc în sigiliile medievale ale orașului Bistrița: originile unui simbol heraldic

Struțul cu potcoavă în cioc în sigiliile medievale ale orașului Bistrița: originile unui simbol heraldic

Author(s): Alexandru Ștefan / Language(s): Romanian Issue: 37/2023

The medieval heraldry of the town of Bistrița incorporates – in a very peculiar way when compared to other urban communities in Transylvania – symbols directly related to the Angevine royal dynasty of Hungary. Starting from the examination of the historical sources that record and use these specific attributes, both documentary (textual) and sigillographic (iconographic), the present paper pursues two main objectives: (1) to determine a more accurate chronology of the use of Bistrița’s urban seals, until around 1540, in relation to the relevant historiography of the subject; (2) to argue new hypotheses regarding the way Bistrița assumed the iconography of its first urban seal, particularly the way in which the crowned ostrich with a horseshoe in its beak came to be considered the main symbol of collective identity of this medieval Transylvanian town.

Observații privind relațiile dintre curtea episcopului de la Alba Iulia și districtul Bistrița în jurul anului 1500

Observații privind relațiile dintre curtea episcopului de la Alba Iulia și districtul Bistrița în jurul anului 1500

Author(s): Mihai Kovács / Language(s): Romanian Issue: 37/2023

The present paper focuses on the complex ties between the episcopal court of Alba Iulia and the elite of the Bistrița district in the half of century around 1500, based on several unpublished sources, rarely used by previous scholarship. These records highlight a collaboration between the episcopate and the local elite in various aspects, such as the ordination of priests, consecration of liturgical spaces, confirmation of parish priests, collection of church taxes, reinforcement of wills, resolution of disputes under canon law, defense of the kingdom boundaries, and management of relations with other political actors. On the other hand, attempts by the bishops to disregard the right of patronage owned by local communities or to increase the taxation were met with firm resistance, often supported by other members of the Saxon “spiritual university”. However, these conflicts, which were rather often in medieval Transylvania, did not worsen during the analyzed period and did not seem to indicate the imminent triumph of the Reformation in the Bistrița district.

Детската смъртност в българия в европейски контекст (1960-2020 г.)

Author(s): Nadezhda Mihaylova-Georgieva,Klara Dokova / Language(s): Bulgarian Issue: 4/2021

.Indicators from the group of infant mortality (IM) allow an assessment of the extent to which social, political, economic conditions in countries and their health systems enable children to successfully pass their first year of life. The aim of the present study is to reveal trends in general and age-specific IM indicators in Bulgaria and selected European countries. Material and methods: Data on IM, neonatal and early neonatal IM in Bulgaria and 28 other European countries for the period 1960-2020 were extracted from the Eurostat database. Trends for the three indicators in each of the four decades are examined and assessed by comparing levels between the beginning and end of the period for each country and between countries. Results: For the sixty-year period (1960-2020), IM rates follow a permanent favorable trend of decreasing lev- els, both in Bulgaria and in the selected European countries, but the processes proceed at a different pace. IM in Bulgaria decreased about 9 times, while countries with a worse “start” such as Portugal, Croatia, Poland, decrease IM by 32, 17, 15 times, respectively. NIM decreased almost 6.5 times, and the value of 3‰ in 2020 ranks our country together with Croatia and Slovakia from 25th to 27th place out of 29 countries. Early neonatal IM decreased 5 times, and the value of 1.9‰ places Bulgaria in twentieth place out of 29 countries. Conclusion: An asymmetry has been revealed in the changes of IM on the one hand and neonatal and early neonatal rates on the other in our country. The asymmetry is expressed in more favorable results in the reduction of NMR and ENMR, while the IMR in Bulgaria lagged behind significantly compared to other coun- tries. This specificity of the trends in IM in Bulgaria showed that the negative processes are not only due to gaps in the health system, and their solution requires a systematic, multisectoral approach.

THE CHURCHES “SFÂNTUL PANTELIMON” IN GALAȚI AND “SFÂNTUL PROOROC ILIE” IN BUCHAREST IN THE RELATIONS BETWEEN THE BULGARIAN AND THE ROMANIAN ORTHODOX CHURCHES

Author(s): Spaska Shumanova / Language(s): English Issue: 1/2024

During the Period of Socialism (1944 – 1989) between the Bulgarian and Romanian Orthodox Churches, two key issues were to be resolved: the establishment of the legal status of Bulgarian Church “Sfântul Pantelimon” in Galați and the provision (until construction) of a church for the Bulgarian community in Bucharest, after the confiscation of the Bulgarian School building and the “St. st. Cyril and Methodius” Church as a result of the new Law on Cults adopted in 1948 by the Romanian state. Finding solutions to these questions depends on the ongoing domestic and foreign political changes in Bulgaria and Romania, which have a direct impact on the relations between the Orthodox Churches. Despite numerous meetings and conversations, both at church and state level, the “Sfântul Pantelimon” Church was taken away from the Bulgarian community and Bulgarian orthodox church, and “Sfântul Prooroc Ilie” Church provided for the temporary use of the Bulgarian inhabitants in Bucharest was also taken away in 2009. In this way, the Bulgarian Orthodox Church is left without its representative church in Romania, and the Bulgarians in Romanian capital without their own house of prayer.

Mihail Ralea – ministru al Muncii în guvernele dictaturii regale (martie 1938 – iulie 1940)

Author(s): Cristian Vasile / Language(s): Romanian Issue: 22/2023

Very few studies have dealt with Mihail Ralea’s activity as Minister of Labor. Scholars mostly focused on his involvement in the creation of the movement “Muncă şi voe bună“ [Work and Good Will]. Several authors who explored the history of the late interwar period referred to M. Ralea’s role as prominent member (even founder) of the National Renaissance Front, the only legal political party during King Carol II’s dictatorship. In contrast, the article examines M. Ralea’s activity by tying it to a variety of topics pertinent to labor politics: the definition of industrial work as a matter of national security; the search for social harmony in a state that invoked “workers’ justice“, but relied on big industrialists and financiers close to the dictator king; the infiltration of the working class by the fascist Legionary Movement; corporatism; the evolution of the „Work and Good Will“ movement; the establishment of the Guilds; and, the nationalist drift within the Ministry of Labor under Ralea, previously perceived as a center-left politician. I also examine the importance of M. Ralea’s main collaborator at the Ministry of Labor: Stavri C. Cunescu. The contribution relies on the following sources: Ralea’s and Cunescu’s files at the National Council for the Study of the Securitate Archives (CNSAS); material drafted by various informative-repressive bodies; relevant documents from the Ministry of Labor collection at the Central National Historical Archives; and, specialized publications from the late 1930s.

Evoluţia instituţiei şi ştiinţei arhivistice româneşti în timpul directoratului lui Aurelian Sacerdoţeanu (1938-1953)

Author(s): Dana Costin / Language(s): Romanian Issue: 22/2023

The article explores the role played by Aurelian Sacerdoţeanu in the organization, management, and modernization of the State Archives. It also shows how these processes triggered the consolidation of archival science in Romania. First, I analyze the administrative activity of Aurelian Sacerdoţeanu at the helm of the State Archives. Second, I address his scientific work and the contributions he made to Romanian archival science. The historical period under consideration (1938-1953) was marked by major political and social changes. Thus, the study of Sacerdoţeanu’s administrative and academic work offers valuable insight on the broader transformation of the historical field during these turbulent years.

In winter with Dracula. Turişti britanici în România socialistă

Author(s): Mioara Anton / Language(s): Romanian Issue: 22/2023

In the mid-1960s, as the regime in Bucharest re-established economic and political relations with Great Britain, it also invested significantly in the development of tourism. Socialist Romania’s hard currency needs forced the communist leadership to find multiple ways to obtain it: tourism was one of the available solutions. Initially, Romanian offers were successful on the British market. During the 1970s, the number of British tourists in Romania increased considerably. They visited either through travel agencies or as private holidaymakers. Figures, however, began to drop when the advertisements proved contrary to the real conditions in the country. Inadequate accommodation services, poor restaurant menus, limited leisure facilities, regime restrictions on travel to and from the country, in addition to rationing and shortages, pushed British tourists into abandoning their holidays and opting for other destinations.

Dezintegrarea URSS în istorigrafia rusă: impactul factorului politic

Author(s): Simion Gheorghiu / Language(s): Romanian Issue: 22/2023

More than 30 years after the disintegration of the Soviet Union, there are still debates in the Russian Federation about whether the USSR collapsed (in Russian, raspalsea) or whether it was destroyed (in Russian, razvalili). Accepting one version or the other is trivially simple. So is rejecting them. To admit the destruction thesis is to fall for conspiracy theories, quite widespread in Russia: allegedly, organizations, such as the CIA, or individuals, such as M.S. Gorbachev or B.N. Yeltsin, deliberately imploded the Union. Relatedly, acknowledging that the USSR collapsed all by itself, for objective historical reasons, is seen as neglecting the role of personalities and their ability to react to the challenges of the times in which they lived. The article highlights the most widespread views in Russian historiography about on this debate. It also explores how political dynamics affected such historiographical discussions.

LA POPULATION DE NAUPLIE AU XIXE SIÈCLE. DE LA VILLE CAPITALE À LA VILLE DE PROVINCE

Author(s): Sebastien Marre / Language(s): French Issue: 1/2024

Located at 147 kms from Athens, in the heart of the Argolid plaine, Nauplie, Nafplion in Greek, is also known as Anapli, a seaside town from the north East of Peloponnese, built on a rocky peninsula and washed by the Argolid Gulf. The town of Nauplie represents a remarkable case of study for a historian as we are dealing with the former capital of the independent Greek state from 1830 to 1834, until it became a provincial town once the state capital was transferred to Athens. This rank in the administrative hierarchy of the Kingdom had a great deal of influence on its demographic evolution and also on the structure of its population. Besides, Nauplie has at its disposal wide archive resources, a rare asset in Greece. It should be noted that a variety of key resources such as population census, civil or religious registries, the dimotologia also known as citizens’ registries and even polling lists remain underexploited. The potential exploitation of these last resources can enable to explore the demographic history of this town of Nauplie.

DESPOT JOHN UGLJEŠA AND THE ATHONITE MONASTERY OF SIMONOPETRA

Author(s): Cyril Pavlikyanov / Language(s): English Issue: 1/2024

The article scrutinizes the content of a chrysobull allegedly promulgated by the Serbian Despot of Serrhai, Jovan Uglješa (1360 – 1371), for the Athonite Monastery of Simonopetra. The original of this act is lost and its only surviving variant is a confirmed copy authenticated by the Constantinopolitan Patriarch Cyril I Loukaris in 1623. The patriarchal confirmative charter offers the reader a text presumably issued by John Uglješa 359 years earlier, i.e. 1264. Starting from this evident discrepancy, the article analyses the text of Loukaris’s corroborated copy and argues which elements of this counterfeit are plausible and could be accepted as genuine and which could not. For better understanding of the Greek original, the full text of Loukaris’s charter is diplomatically published at the end of the article.

On October 23, 1893, the Internal Macedonian-Adrianople Revolutionary Organization was established in Thessaloniki. It was a national liberation organization of the Bulgarians in the Ottoman Empire. The organization is active in the Thessaloniki, Bitola, Skopje, Adrianople and Constantinople vilayet. Its programming documents state that it will fight in a revolutionary way to implement Article 23 of the Berlin Treaty, to grant political autonomy to Macedonia and Adrianople Thrace. It is envisaged that the two neighboring areas will be separated into an independent territorial unit within the empire, and administrative and political reforms should be carried out in it with a view to improving the living conditions of the Christian population there. During the wars of national unification the battalions of VMORO joined the Bulgarian Army. They actively support its actions, their goal being the conquest of as much of Macedonia and Thrace as possible and their eventual accession to the Kingdom of Bulgaria.
