Summary/Abstract: On October 23, 1893, the Internal Macedonian-Adrianople Revolutionary Organization was established in Thessaloniki. It was a national liberation organization of the Bulgarians in the Ottoman Empire. The organization is active in the Thessaloniki, Bitola, Skopje, Adrianople and Constantinople vilayet. Its programming documents state that it will fight in a revolutionary way to implement Article 23 of the Berlin Treaty, to grant political autonomy to Macedonia and Adrianople Thrace. It is envisaged that the two neighboring areas will be separated into an independent territorial unit within the empire, and administrative and political reforms should be carried out in it with a view to improving the living conditions of the Christian population there. During the wars of national unification the battalions of VMORO joined the Bulgarian Army. They actively support its actions, their goal being the conquest of as much of Macedonia and Thrace as possible and their eventual accession to the Kingdom of Bulgaria.
