Border people’s border perception: The case of Shemdinli (Shemdinan)

Author(s): Ferhat Tekin / Language(s): English Publication Year: 0

Whether it is territorial or sociopolitical, the border is a sociological factor that gains its significance and function from the people it divides. In other words, it functions as the main instrument for all types of categorizations (social, political, ideological etc.). There is no doubt that demarcating has been an act since the early history of humankind. Individuals, groups, societies or political entities marked borders in almost all periods in order to determine themselves. However, the determination of borders based on soil is completely a modern fact and the rigid and sharp lines are also unique to the modern nation-state.

Development, security and the role of Frontex on the Turkish-Greek border

Author(s): Burcu Toğral Koca / Language(s): English Publication Year: 0

Parallel to the intensification of the EU integration process, the discourses and practices governing the migration issue have significantly changed in Europe. Previously seen as an innocent economic activity, blessed with a vital role in the construction of European economies after World War Two, welcomed and encouraged by European states, dealt with through economic and humanitarian discourses, migration has been transformed into a security matter in that it ‘constitutes’ a threat to European societies. It has been increasingly linked to criminality, socioeconomic problems, ‘cultural deprivation’, and lately to terrorism. This transformation started mainly in the mid-1970s, but accelerated with the redefinition of security in the wake of the Cold War. To be more precise, the traditional security thinking of the Cold War years, which confined itself to state-centric and military-oriented conceptualizations, has shifted to include various issues ranging from environment and poverty to population movement. This widening of the security agenda to different areas and utilization of security language for non-military issues have had important repercussions for migration. In this transformation of security, migration has come to be increasingly framed, analyzed and governed through security lenses. In other words, migration has been securitized and this securitization process has increasingly appeared in public discourses and academic research.

Incentive to migrate and to return to home country: A comparison of Turkish, Moroccan and Egyptian cases

Author(s): Yehudith Kahn,Nir Billfeld / Language(s): English Publication Year: 0

Most migration models assume that migration is an irreversible and permanent decision, however, this assumption is not appropriate in the Turkish, Moroccan and Egyptian cases. Some migrants return home either because they had decided before migration to remain abroad only temporarily, or because changing circumstances led them to reverse the previous decision to permanently migrate.

Tiryaki Kukla – Smoking cessation and tobacco prevention among migrants from Turkey in Switzerland

Author(s): Michael P. Schaub,Corina Salis Gross,Claudia Arnold / Language(s): English Publication Year: 0

As seen in other countries (e.g. for the USA see Baluja et al., 2003), some migrant populations in Switzerland show higher smoking rates than the average population. Recent results from a Swiss survey among the migrant population show significantly higher smoking prevalence rates for Turkish speaking migrants (male: 55.2% and female: 29.5%) than the Swiss population aged 14–65 years (male: 21.7% and female: 19.5%; GMM II, Guggisberg et al., 2011). Additionally, male migrants from Turkey show the highest smoking prevalence rates among the migrant population in Switzerland (ibid.). Turkish-speaking migrants are often also among the highest smoking prevalence groups in other European countries (e.g., Nierkens et al., 2006; Reese et al., 2005). Behavioral therapies in groups (Stead & Lancaster, 2005) or single sessions (Lancaster & Stead, 2005) as well as nicotine replacement therapy (NRT; Stead et al., 2008) have been effective for smoking cessation treatment. In Switzerland, such therapies are offered by several providers (e.g., Cancer League, Lung League), but according to the statements of these providers and of other experts of the Swiss tobacco prevention that we interviewed, they are not able to reach the migrant population effectively. Studies from other countries also refer to problems in reaching migrant populations and show the importance of financial access and language barriers (Burns & Fenton, 2006). Another study highlights the importance of cultural aspects (e.g., norms of the religious leaders) when offering smoking cessation treatment for Turkish migrants (Nierkens et al., 2005).

Union formation of Turkish migrant descendants in Western Europe: Family involvement in meeting a partner and marrying

Author(s): Nadja Milewski,Doreen Huschek / Language(s): English Publication Year: 0

One of the striking differences in family formation behaviour between Turkish and Western European cultures is in the role of family influence in the processes of partner choice and union formation. Family involvement has an impact on partner choice, as well as on other aspects of union formation, such as the type of union and the age at first union formation. Family involvement frequently occurs in Turkey and in other countries with a long Muslim tradition, and it remains important among emigrants and their descendants from these countries (de Valk & Liefbroer, 2007; Milewski & Hamel, 2010; Huschek et al., 2012; Baykara-Krumme, 2014; van Zantvliet et al., 2014; Topgül, 2015).

Crossing Borders-Negotiating Identities in Transnational Spaces: The case of Bulgarian Turks in Germany

Author(s): Hande Erdem / Language(s): English Publication Year: 0

During the process of migration, individuals do not just cross borders of nationstates, but also cultural, social and political boundaries (Faist, 2000). In the case of EU foreigners, along with their home country and destination country, they also reassess their European identities in relation to encounters with other European citizens. Studies based on European identity mostly focus on the majority populations and neglect different ethnic, cultural sub-groups within European societies (Waechter, 2015).

Internal Migration and Perception of Employability: Case of Kocaeli

Author(s): Doğa Başar Sarıipek,Burcu Kümbül Güler / Language(s): English Publication Year: 0

As a consequence of globalization and deindustrialization, over the past decades, many countries have struggled with the problem of job insecurity. In the sea of uncertainty where the negative impact of job insecurity might be very high, the contingent workers can only have a chance to survive in this harsh working environment by relying on employability to secure their labour market position (De Cuyper et al., 2010: 70). When we consider internal migration studies done since 1970’s in Turkey, early studies were emphasizing a culture of optimism in the perception of migrants because of having better conditions in cities compared to their original villages. However, after 1980’s, due to increased deregulation of the labour market with subcontracting and lower wages, migrants have begun to feel less secure in the labour market (Peker, 1996: 9). Therefore, in this study, we try to emphasize the significance of internal migrants' employability perception in the integration of labour market which is also a good predictor of social integration after migration.

The Angel of Nostalgia Trapped between East and West

Author(s): Marta Fernàndez Soldado / Language(s): English Publication Year: 0

This is how Andrzej Stasiuk, returning to the places he has traveled to and recreating them with a map in front of him and his baggage of memories, images, scents, coins and stamps, depicts a sort of nihilistic monetary flow from the West to the East. On the Road to Babadag. Travels in the Other Europe is the writing in movement of the Polish writer’s wanderings through Eastern Europe, first published in 2004, right at the time when Poland joined the European Union and went the opposite direction, westward. But Stasiuk is not interested in travelling to the Western cities where all wishes seemed to emerge from the eighties onwards and rather, finding himself in Słubice in the summer of 1983 or 1984, looking across from the river to Frankfurt, turns his back and 'that same evening I headed back, east. Like a dog, I had sniffed an unfamiliar locale, then moved on.’
