Motivation with Game Elements in Education Mediated by E-Learning Resources

Motivation with Game Elements in Education Mediated by E-Learning Resources

Author(s): Jan Miškov / Language(s): English Issue: 1/2021

We present a report from our preliminary research, which focused on the possibilities of implementing game elements into e-learning at university. We were interested in the attitudes and preferences of the students on the introductory course for the study of culture, where a questionnaire survey was conducted. We asked students what potential they see in the application of digital technologies in e-learning, what motivates them to study online and what advantages and limits of the educational principles of games they see in e-learning. Here we offer a description of the preliminary results that led to our next research steps. The questionnaire was distributed among students of two runs of the Introduction to the Study of Culture course at the Faculty of Social Studies of Masaryk University, who completed it after the final test. A total of 188 students submitted a completed form. These were bachelor students, usually in the first year of study, mostly women. We chose a freely available online tool for the analysis, our approach to data processing was non-mathematical at this stage. Nevertheless, we believe that it has enabled us to gain a direct and unmediated insight into the subject of our research. Mixed methods pragmatic rationalization of the research process traditionally refers to the complementarity of datasets and greater validity. Based on the findings, we recommend to educators and developers of the online learning environment how they could improve the design of e-learning in accordance with the needs and different learning styles of students.

Covid-19 salgını: eğitim yapıları üzerinden yeniden kullanım değerlendirmesi

Author(s): Caner Yetiş,Merve Tuna Kayılı / Language(s): Turkish Issue: 2/2021

The COVID-19 epidemic, which is a widespread epidemic worldwide, continues to seriously threaten life. Although the spread of the virus by contact and droplet scattering requires the evacuation of collective and social living spaces and individual protection of people in their homes, this situation has not seemed possible from an economic, psychological and physiological perspective. The education system, which has started online education with the first case, was greatly affected by the epidemic. The control of the epidemic is of great importance in terms of preventing students from being affected by the virus in schools where controlled social life and controlled education are switched due to the decrease in the course of the epidemic. Examining the precautions to be taken for controlled education in schools and the rules to be followed and accordingly re-occupancy evaluation are the most important way to combat the epidemic with architectural and engineering control. In this context, this study includes the controlled education measures under the heading of controlled social life and the re-occupancy evaluation over selected educational buildings by reading the rules for epidemic management and development of healthy environments in educational buildings from different guides. In addition, this paper argues that the epidemic risk, which should be handled in the design phase of the building, should not be ignored in the buildings, as well as the architectural and engineering controls in terms of the payoff of the epidemic.

Author(s): Ahmet Çakmak,Yakup UZUNPOLAT / Language(s): Turkish Issue: 1/2021

Turkey and many countries, the school has closed, or partially or completely due to covid 19 pandemic. Schools remained closed until a certain time in Turkey. Afterwards, its opening has been postponed until certain dates. In the second half of 2019-2020 and in the first and second half of 2020-2021, students were mostly deprived of face-to-face education. This study, which aims to describe the problems experienced by RE teachers in the learning-teaching process during the epidemic period, was designed according to a case study, one of the qualitative research methods. The study group consists of 8 RE teachers, four of them male and four female. The data collection tool is a semistructured interview form. The data were subjected to content analysis, and NVIVO 12 program was used. RE teachers experienced problems regarding technique, absenteeism, pre-lesson preparation, learning environment, teaching methods, motivation, communication, time and measurement evaluation. Although these negative situations have occurred, it can be said that teachers are willing to use the gains in distance education with normalization and aim to take learning out of the classroom in this way. It can be suggested to researchers to study the concepts of classroom privacy and digital world ethics within the framework of education. Improving the technology use competencies of RE teachers can also be suggested to the relevant institutions.

Pornography has become a major problem of today cyberspace, extended through the Internet at the planetary scale. The phenomenon has deep social and economic implications affecting a huge number of children under the age of eighteen who are subjects of sexual abuse and exploitation. Child pornography generally refers to images or films depicting sexually explicit activities involving a child. Because child pornography involves children, the test of acceptability is much stricter than for regular pornography, as consent cannot be given either by the child or guardian. Child welfare professionals are worried that paedophiles will use the third-generation mobile technology to access child sex sites, take pictures of sex with children and trade in images of abuse.

COMMUNICATION ERRORS AND DIDACTIC BARRIERS IN THE ONLINE ENVIRONMENT - THEORETICAL PERSPECTIVES

Author(s): Claudia Budău / Language(s): English Issue: 02/2023

The COVID-19 pandemic, globally spread, has caused major changes in the educational field in Romania: the closing of schools, the transition from physical to online learning, based on digital platforms and applications, but also the transition from predominantly traditional face-to-face teaching-learning-assessment methods to strategies and tools adapted to the online/virtual environment. The adoption of online teaching was considered a sudden decision, causing teachers to take responsibility for adapting and implementing the educational process and learning in the online environment. In contrast to other papers in which aspects related to the quality of training carried out in the online environment, the advantages or disadvantages of one or another mode of delivery of didactic content are analyzed, in this paper I will emphasize the factors that distort or hindereffective virtual didactic communication.

USING GEOGEBRA AND GOOGLE COLAB FOR TEACHING FUNDAMENTAL THERMODYNAMICS CONCEPTS

USING GEOGEBRA AND GOOGLE COLAB FOR TEACHING FUNDAMENTAL THERMODYNAMICS CONCEPTS

Author(s): Anda Ciobanu,Cristina Miron,Cătălin Berlic,Valentin Barna / Language(s): English Issue: 02/2023

We present teaching of some fundamental thermodynamics concepts by means of GeoGebra software and Google Colab platform. Employing these computer tools help students to better understand notions, phenomena and laws that describe them. Additionally, they could make correlations between properties and behaviour of objects and phenomena that we encounter in everyday life. Via GeoGebra, the comportment of gases under different conditions can be explored while explaining how the pressure, temperature, and volume of a gas relate one to each other. The operation of the simulation software is very intuitive and its many accompanying built-in tools assist students in developing their vision over dynamic representations of subjects, concurrently acquiring new knowledge, and expertise and improving their learning motivation. We also created a Python application software on Google Colab platform to process the experimental data collected in the laboratory in the study of the isothermal transformation of an ideal gas. The purpose of this approach is to develop the students' skills both in the investigation of thermal phenomena specific to physics, but also in the use of mathematics and information technology in the simulation of the analyzed system and the processing and interpreting of experimental data. We consider that the inclusion of software tools during classes is an efficient and successful way to improve the physics learning process.

Teaching Machine Learning to Middle and High School Students from a Low Socio-Economic Status Background

Author(s): Ramon Mayor Martins,Christiane Gresse von Wangenheim,Marcelo Fernando Rauber,Jean Carlo Rossa Hauck,Melissa Figueiredo Silvestre / Language(s): English Issue: 3/2024

Knowledge about Machine Learning (ML) is becoming essential, yet it remains a restricted privilege that may not be available to students from a low socio-economic status background. Thus, in order to provide equal opportunities, we taught ML concepts and applications to 158 middle and high school students from a low socio-economic background in Brazil. Results show that these students can understand how ML works and execute the main steps of a human-centered process for developing an image classification model. No substantial differences regarding class periods, educational stage, and sex assigned at birth were observed. The course was perceived as fun and motivating, especially to girls. Despite the limitations in this context, the results show that they can be overcome. Mitigating solutions involve partnerships between social institutions and university, an adapted pedagogical approach as well as increased on-byone assistance. These findings can be used to guide course designs for teaching ML in the context of underprivileged students from a low socio-economic status background and thus contribute to the inclusion of these students.
